Hernia and sleeve insurance question
Slim-Shady replied to %#LoosingIt?!&-'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The center who performed my surgery looked for that automatically. I guess I thought they all did. I was told that almost everyone has it, and that the insurance companies have to repair it. If possible, I would use a bariatric center who knows all of the insurance ins and outs to ensure your insurance covers as much as possible. In my case, I went to my initial consultation, and found out that day that my insurance did not cover WLS. They told me what my out of pocket expense would be if I had/didn't have a hiatal hernia. They scheduled an EGD (which the insurance company had to cover as well), and they confirmed the hernia. They provide pictures as proof for the insurance company and that was that! My surgery was scheduled, and I knew what my out of pocket costs would be. They also had a payment plan available no matter your credit. They repair the hernia, and perform the WLS at the same time. That's how they get around non-coverage. -
Yup, I had my gastric 13 yrs ago. I was really good about staying on track for about 2 yrs. Starting weight was 500lbs. Current weight 300lbs. Prior to WLS I was told I wouldn't be able to have anymore children. To my surprise, a year and a half later and down 100+ lbs. Positive pregnancy test. Unfortunately soon after I got so busy with life, I stopped going to my checkups and have since moved out of the city I lived in and lost track if the bariatric doctor. I need and want to get back on track. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

Market for professional before/after portraits?
wjgo posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am wondering if there could be a market for before and after portraits of bariatric patients. I know overweight people generally do not like their photos taken. However, having been a former patient, I might be able to find a niche market for my area as future patients might be more comfortable with a former patient who could definitely see their future selves I would take photographs at local "outdoor scenes" so that they can be followed up at the same place in the future by anyone. Photography is more of a professional hobby for me, but I have never got into the "portrait" arena. This might be a fun venture. I have never seen a good before, or even good after pictures. I think the before pictures are all just horrible. Even in doctors offices, they are so bad, my center stopped taking posting them on walls. I would even hang out with them for some activities for candids, because many patients change what and how they do things afterwards. So instead of having horrible pictures to show people, they'll have something; nice. Sent from my ONEPLUS A6013 using BariatricPal mobile app -
New England/Canadian Maritimes?
frust8 replied to frust8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'd like to eat or have you cater a bariatric meal. Some of the combinations you've come up with sound strange at first but the more I read they actually sound tasty. You are the Van Gogh or Leonardo DiVinci of food. And yeah, New England Clam Chowdah, ymmm! I loathe Manhattan , one time I had it NASTY. Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app -
Looking for the right protein drink...
cheri02 replied to cheri02's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you, @@Grace2115! Didn't even know there was a bariatric pantry. Good to have that resource and to know where to get samples. -
I was banded on 9/22 and will go for my first fill tomorrow (couldn't go last week - I was working) and since I haven't had any restriction and am hungry all the time - I haven't lost weight. My last visit and weight was coming off 4 weeks of liquid only diet. Now I've been on pretty much the 6 month pre-op diet (maybe less food) - protein, veggie, fruit. I have actually been losing weight for 3 years (2 years before I started this banding odessey) and am down about 60 pounds. I am happy with this. But my doctor said at the last visit that he wanted me to lose 10-15 lbs. in 3 weeks. I am about 185 lbs. Not only is 10-15 lbs. in 3 weeks unreasonable for any diet, but even more so for where I am weight wise and with no fill or restriction. I don't feel like I need to starve myself to reach some artificial goal. My surgeon is a regular surgeon who also does bariatric surgery and I was only his 23rd banding case. Anyone have this experience?

Just wondering if anyone has had luck with Pacificare's PPO in CA? It looks like Bariatric procedures are excluded in the handbook but I’m not sure if this is a case of no means no or no unless you have a medical need. Thoughts?

I have not been on this forum for a while, have been really busy getting ready for my surgery and now I'm here in beautiful Tijuana and it's done. I want to tell everyone how wonderful the whole team of Baja bariatrics have been to me. Florence hospital care was supreme, the facility is nice and the nurses here are so attentive and kind. The surgical team is superb and Omar Lliles Acosta who is the coordinator for Dr Illan makes sure of it. His number one priority is patient care and maintaining there record of zero complications. I came alone and he was there right by my side when I awoke. After the surgery when you are released from the hospital, he will take you to the amazingly beautiful Hotel Lucerna ! Omar will make sure you have broth, Gatorade, water and anything else you might need and he will take you sight seeing and shopping for souvenirs as well. This is something that you truly do not get with other companies. Dr Illan is an amazing surgeon, I had a lot of scar tissue from a previous surgery and he was totally prepared to handle that. Because he is also a well experienced trauma surgeon, that made me feel secure knowing he could handle my situation with ease. I did months and months of research and I know without a doubt that I made the right decision to choose not just this Dr but this team at Baja Bariatrics. If any one is considering surgery I encourage you to check them out, you can go to their web site and join the Facebook group of Team Illan. The support I received from his patients/ fellow sleevers is like none other. We are like a family and continue in our support for new patients and those who are considering having there surgery done here in Tijuana MX. If any one has a question, feel free to send me a message and I will do my best to reply.

Day 20 post-op and now what do I eat?
alwaysvegas replied to UmmZ's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did your surgeon not provide a plan or a nutritionist to help you plan your post-op eating plan? I ask because doctors/nutritionists vary quite a bit in what they recommend. @@roundisashape gives a really great plan. But if your doctor/nutritionist did not give you a specific plan, you can do a web search of "gastric sleeve eating phases" and you'll come up with many medical websites so you can see the different recommendations. I'm just concerned that your surgeon would perform a surgery and not give you a list of foods to eat that he/she wants for their plan. This is the link to my surgeon's plan. You can see the different phases and recommended foods and eating times: http://www.360bariatrics.com/360-process/bariatric-diets/ -
I Can't Figure Out What The Correct Balance Is...
Crystal Woods posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Calories, Protein, Vitamins, fluids.... UUUGGGGHHH! I am going to list what I am eating daily right now and YES I am aware that the calories are probably too low, not enough fluids, etc, etc. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated. I am 2 weeks out tomorrow and am in the mushies stage. Breakfast 8 oz of Water with 1/2 packet Protein powder (the whole pack is 23 grams protein)... it takes a couple hours to get it all down... lunch Large tablespoon of cottage cheese Large tablespoon of pureed canned fruit (usually peaches) Snack 4 - 8 oz water dinner Large tablespoon of something pureed such as tuna, shredded chicken with cheese, or spaghetti (none of these have made my stomach feel good ...) Freeze pop before bed At some point during the day I take a large bariatric chewable Vitamin... 2 major problems: food is relatively unappealing to me with the exception of steak and salad which I can't have and I feel very full for a long time and if I sip water with my meal it flushes me out immediately and severly... -
Can you spot other surgery recipients?
BlackBerryJuice replied to Crabadams72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't met very many people who I know have had bariatric surgery - it's not as popular in Canada yet as it is in the US. Plus I'm 25, and there are few people in their 20s who get this surgery. But I mean, if you ever see someone who's been severely obese for decades suddenly drop 100 lbs in a year, the odds of it being via surgery are almost 100%. -
Post-surgery psych support?
LAN2k replied to BlackBerryJuice's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For one on one therapy it would be best to consult with several who have specialized in eating disorders and/or Bariatric WL patients. Ask your surgeon for references. I have found OA, Over Eaters Anonymous to be a GREAT place for group support. Meet ups are all over the globe and can be easily found locally using the www. Best wishes. -
Thanks everyone! I am 1 week out of the hospital and just began to "eat solids" yesterday. I was actually pretty scared to try. I began with egg whites scrambled. Once yesterday and once today. Had a Fiber choice chewable and am drinking lots of Gatorade g2. Began my bariatric vitamins once again as well. Still weak but because it's summer in the So. Cal desert I'm not venturing out much. I do get into the pool late in the day and just walk and tread water. My nutritionist told me to get yogurt with probiotics so I will try some later. NEVER EVER want to go thru that again.

What a week! I would like some feedback about my situation. Here it goes...When I first started this process the Bariatric Office said that they would be able to pull my records. Well, I find out yesterday they can't because doctor office is no longer a part of their affiliation. Needless to say I call my OB office to get weight records because I go there yearly. By the way, I requested these records in September and they only sent me results to HIV Test. I called them back then and they were suppose to mail my complete exams to Clinic. Needless to say they didn't. Well, I talk to the medical records lady today and tell her that I am coming to pick up the records because I need them ASAP. No Problem. Well, when I went to pick them up at 3 p.m. (I needed to pick up before 5 because she will be gone) and walked out of the office with the sealed envelope my natural instincts told me to open the envelope. Sure enough, this woman has put 1 record in for 2010 and has left for the day. Needless to say they knew I drove out of my way to get these records so the assistant on duty went to get my file and proceeded to copy everything from 2008. But wait, THERE IS NO RECORD FOR 2009! What the hockey sticks am I to do? So, I called my Family doctor's office to see about getting 2009 records. The lady told me it would take between 2-3 weeks. Mind you I only saw this doctor once in 2009 and was a new patient. Is it that hard to pull 1 record that should still be in my chart seeing as how I don't go but 1 time a year? Ughh, the lady in my OB office senses my frustration and copies records back from 2006. THE BIG QUESTION IS DO YOU THINK I SHOULD HAVE HER SUBMIT FOR INSURANCE AUTHORIZATION TOMORROW WITH HEALTH RECORDS FROM 2006-2008 AND 2010 AND 1 FROM THIS YEAR? I would still get 2009 records just in case we need them. For your information I have AETNA.

New to board and completely petrified of surgery
Sheila replied to EvRev's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ev, I too work in the medical field. I am not a doctor or a nurse, but I am around them every day. I also have access to all the medical literature, but I have purposely chosen not to look at it. I did not want to freak myself out. What I have done is I watched the surgery on YouTube (which I found totally cool), I have talked to many people who have had VSG, I have prayed about it, and I know I have made the right decision for me. One thing you have 100% control over is when or if you have this surgery. If you are having doubts, put it off for a little bit. Make sure this is something that is right for you. Only you can say that for sure. Schedule appointments with a bariatric surgeon, ask loads of questions, become as informed as possible. I think what I would do is stop looking at medical journals and statistics. Find out from people who have gone through it. And if you decide this is not for you, you are no worse off. Just take your time. I hope you come to find peace in whatever decision you make for yourself. Hugs, Sheila -

Psych Evaluation
BZButterfly79 replied to BZButterfly79's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tiffykins, you had a great experience, they didn't give me anything and I left there feeling like I don't have a personality but they said that stuff goes to the bariatric clinic. Yes the questions were funny at times: Do you think you are good at anything you do? (Yes I am super confident that's why I ended up overweight!) Do you like being bossed around? (I thought...no...do you? but there was only *true or *false) Are you lying on this questionnaire?(If you can't trust me then...) -
Hi, Mimisan! Once I was able to keep liquids down, I was able to drink apple, cranberry, and grape juices, Jello (but didn't eat much of it - didn't care for the snack pack texture), Protein shakes (Bariatric fusion in the hospital, Premier at home), Water, liquid medications (Carafate and Hycet for pain), and some broth (but didn't care for the stuff in the hospital - Too bland). Hope this helps!

My Job Requires Lifting
vickie6866 replied to vickie6866's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The bad outcomes from bariatric surgery were mostly from one doctor in the area, who has now moved to another state, and a few from the local doctors who are through the hospital I work at. A few were lap bands that had problems that turned into other problems, but most were from gastric bypass or DS surgeries. The bypass/DS patients were ones that were usually over 400pounds, got put on a vent after surgery and then took a while to come off. Once they did get discharged from ICU they have to come to rehab because now they are weak from post op diet intake, being bedridden, and as a result stay where I am at for weeks. They usually go home with family and home health care, some even go to a nursing home. Being fat and the road to being skinny is a scary thing, but I can't not walk it because I see what happens when you don't. I had an obese 35 year old co-worker who had one large and two smaller strokes last week that were a direct result of bad lifestyle and being obese. -
I work as a nurse and my typical patient is usually elderly, a new post op patient, a recent moderate to severe stroke victim, a bariatric patient who had a bad outcome, an accident victim, and/or a person who has been debilitated for a long period of time. The typical patient is a one person hard tranfer or a two person mild transfer. They weight anywhere from 100lbs to 500lbs, with the average being around 200lbs. They need to be tranferred into and out of the bed/wheelchair/bathroom and lifted and repositioned often while in bed, I work three-12 hour night shifts in a row so lots of this. I am hoping to have my sleeve done during a two week planned vacation, and return back to work about 10 days post op. I will be able to avoid a lot of the lifting by saying that I have had stomach surgery, but there is always times when it is hard to do. For anyone out there that is in a job like mine with this type of lifting, what is the amount of time you took off. I want to let my body heal properly, but at the same time I hate to make my co-workers work a lot of extra days to cover my days if I am off, so I would like to be back as soon as possible. Worse case I can tell my boss that I had the surgery and will only work if there are always two other people there with me, sometime there is only me and another worker. I hate to take this road because there are to many things that can go wrong and it is a major hassle to always make sure everyone hasn't forgotten that I need these needs met. Plus I hate feeling like I am whining or not pulling my weigh, I went through a year and a half of many complications with my lap band so everyone knows I have had these type needs in the past, so I really hate to go down that road once again. Any advice would be welcomed.

Starting Pre Op Diet... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chicadee replied to KASPER's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on day 3 of 14 of the pre-op diet. The last two days must be clear liquids only. I am using Bariatric Advantage vanilla w/ skim and some fruit in it in my morning shake, then I have a Syntrax Nectar w/ water around lunch with a salad or steamed vegetables. Then in the evening I have been having Unjury chocolate splendor w/skim and steamed veggies or a salad and a chicken breast only if necessary. I also can have 2 control bars if needed which I think you can only get at the doctor's office. I am hovering around 1000 calories a day with that combination. Today is the first day I didn't have the 2 control bars, I had a half of one this morning and half in the afternoon. -
Hi, I'm new here. I'm sticking a toe in the Water of lap band surgery for all the reasons that have been said on these boards a billion times before. Anyway, Bryn Mawr Hospital is reasonably close to me, and they've had a bariatric surgery unit since 2009. Has anyone gone there? What was your experience like? Any feedback, both positive and negative, is welcome. Thanks.

Bryn Mawr Bariatrics?
llband2011 replied to mysticmilt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm in the presurgery phase (as a disclaimer), Bryn Mawr is also close to me. I looked into them as an option but was concerned about the number of bariatric surgeries their surgeon has performed. It was far less compared to what other surgeons in this are state on websites. That seemed odd to me. Ultimately, I chose Phoenixville and I am very happy with my surgeon and his team. I also considered UPenn, but I did not want to travel into the city for all my visits. I've heard they have a fantastic program. Good luck to you!
