3 months post op Gastric sleeve
Arabesque replied to skinny44's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also lost my interest in food & wasn’t really hungry so I get how you feel. I also was only eating two ‘meals’ a day to begin but then I realised I needed to eat for my body to function properly. So I started to eat more regularly. I found eating to the clock helpful. It actually changed a lot of my relationship with food. That adage of eating to live not living to eat became true for me. (I still very much enjoy food but I consider what & why I’m eating it.) As a place to begin, try adding a third meal of a smaller portion & eat it even more slowly than you normally would just to get into the routine. Or add a yogurt drink or shake at sometime during the day & look at them as a drink not a meal with the bonus of necessary nutrients. Have you had a chat with your dietician to review your diet, nutrient & calorie intake. They may have some suggestions re nutrient dense meal suggestions. The lack of hunger & interest in eating doesn’t last. It’s a temporary bonus of the surgery. Though my lack of hunger lasted into my second year, most find it starts to return in their first year from about 6 months. Actually you’ll get to a time in the future when you wish you still experienced them. -
Just had my gastric bypass surgery on Tuesday
Merri Beth replied to Kelseydawn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve on Nov 29th. I also had hiatal hernia repair, which I did not know I even had the hernia so glad they found and repaired that while i was under. I have been on the liquids since Nov 14th. I go back to Dr for check up on Dec 8th. So its liquids until at least that time. The thought of the protein shakes was almost too much, they were so sweet, I had to figure out something. I haven't been told I can have soups. The only addition to the pre-op diet us 1% milk and greek yogurt, non fat, zero sugar. So I was feeling desparate for a change. My friend who is a nurse, put together this mixture for me and it is so much more tolerable and keeps me full. It is one half cup of the unflavored yogurt, one half cup of milk, one protein shake, one scoop of unflavored protein powder all blended in blender. The cosistency is good, the flavor is so much better, the sweetness is cut more than in half. I feel so much more satisfied with this "potion" than any I have tried yet. Once i finish the amount in the blender, I know I have hit 87 GM of protein for the day. My friend did the protein calculations for me to make sure i was getting enough. As for getting through it each day, I pray a lot, and keep my mind focused on the end goal. I am also making sure I rest a lot. I have learned from past surgeries that pushing things to fast always backfires. I am practicing positive thinking and positive meditations as well. This might sound crazy but so far it is working to get me through the days of liquids. Plus, I figure if i made it this far i can do another day, as you said one day at a time, seems to be the best solution! You can do this, you are doing it and that is fantastic. -

1 week post op & HUNGRY ! Help!
FinchLips replied to AXR313's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stick to the plan! I feel your pain, I felt the e act same way! I broadened out to include Greek yogurt (watered down with almond milk) and bone broth and gatorade protein/Whey2O were my best friend during this time. Higher protein absolutely helped me feel full and stay satisfied longer. Sent from my SM-G998U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Yes, once you feel that tightness - that's your restriction. Meals should not take more than 30 minutes to consume and not be more than 2 ounces in portion. I was forcing myself to eat a full cup of yogurt around 3 weeks because I was trying to get all my protein in and my nutritionist strongly advised that was way too much (a cup of yogurt is typically about 5 oz) But you lose the most weight in the beginning and also don't have that hungry feeling so take advantage of it! Stay disciplined through the beginning and it will pay off! The first 4 weeks is the hardest but it gets better! Good luck!

November 2022 surgery support!
R2twobees replied to feisty one's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My Resleeve was on Nov. 16th. Next to zero pain and each day I can consume more water. I was discharged on Phase two diet which included cream soups, protein shakes, Greek yogurt, and everything else from Phase one. I'm now eleven days post-op and having crazy cravings for popcorn. I allowed myself to have a half cup. I chewed it well and it went down with no issue, which scares me that I was able to eat it. I haven't cheated other than that. I cooked an entire Thanksgiving dinner, but none of that for me....instead 3 oz cream of chicken soup. I'm able to get my 64ozs of water in. I'm a slow loser though....before the preop liquid diet 244, sw 237 today 231....i feel like i should've lost more by now 11 days post-op and only 13lbs? -

Hey folks I need advise please! They put me on the two week pre-op diet today and I'll post their guidelines below. Tomorrow is Thanksgiving, can I get by with cheating just tmro if I stuck to just about meat and veggies? Will that impact me if I have Thanksgiving dinner? This is also odd, they told me I am to have NOTHING but what's on the list.. that includes meat and eggs... That's protein so I dont understand why I can't have that? Even if it's tuna or something. Can I get some advise please, I'm really frustrated. If need be I'll stay home and not go to Thanksgiving but I don't want to have to do that if I don't have to. Met with the surgeon for the final time prior to surgery on Dec 5th. I start liquid diet 10 days prior. SO I will be enjoying a small slice of pecan pie in Thursday. The liquid side consists of a combination of Soups (tomato & cream of types) thinned. broth , Protein Shakes, assorted sugar free jellos (like the green), popsicles, pudding and yogurts and such. The only admonishment is Clear Liquids the day before surgery. It will be the same diet after surgery until advised to proceed to the next step. Obviously this is my teams directions, Your team will probably have their own requirements. Best bet is to follow them. After all, that's why we're paying them the big bucks. Well wishes and prayers to all.

1 week post of and severe diarrhea
MyDogsLoveMe replied to switchwitch's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I had a bit of loose stool. Not too bad but not the norm. I did take extra benefiber, and haven't added anything different so I came to look at this site to see- since I have been pretty much eating the exact same things for two to three weeks- and my yogurt has one of things you listed as sugar alcohol <1g I didn't see it as an issue. Maybe it's that or something else. I'm thinking I should drink some extra fluids to compensate. Scared but excited. -
Advice needed: How to do Thanksgiving
catwoman7 replied to heartofmercury's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was five months out at my first post-surgery Thanksgiving, so in a different place than you are. I had an ounce or two of turkey with gravy and a tablespoon or two of sweet potatoes and stuffing. I probably had some vegetables, too. I remember I brought a container of pumpkin-flavored Greek yogurt with me to eat while everyone else ate pumpkin pie. in the years since then, I've eaten what I want, just in small portions. At 7.5 years out, I try to eat sensibly at holiday meals and not make a pig of myself. *Usually* it works... -
Dumping or lactose intolerance?
Courtney* replied to Courtney*'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
About 9 grams of protein. I’ve had other milk based things and it seems to be hot or miss. Milk drinks make me nauseous but yogurt and cottage cheese has been fine. It was just odd given the short period and ingredients. -
Dumping or lactose intolerance?
learn2cook replied to Courtney*'s topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Mmm maybe? How much protein was there? Since you are on soft foods maybe you can narrow things down by trying a low sugar low fat Greek yogurt. ( on second thought, stick to doctors orders) There’s various degrees of lactose intolerance too. It could even be your body reacting to soft foods vs. liquids. I have found that the dumping can be lessened or controlled with mild exercise and combining with protein. I probably wouldn’t be testing too much, your body is still deeply healing. As always you should talk with your team if you aren’t sure. They see more people and know what to look for, and what to avoid or enhance. -
Waiting
summerseeker replied to Prioritizing Myself's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my surgery in the pandemic. It should have been a 4 month wait but ended up being 8. It broke me at times but the information I gained while waiting and reading back pages of this forum really set me up for success. I knew exactly what to expect. In the New year the time will fly for you. You will be so busy getting your house ready [ nesting] and then doing your pre-op diet. I made broths for the freezer and bought a mixture of foods for the early days like instant porridge and a variety of protein yogurts etc. Being older and disabled at the time I didnt have much energy while recovering so was really glad of this prep work. -
December surgery
Prioritizing Myself replied to balynch92's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations on your date! Sending positive thoughts for a smooth, successful surgery and recovery. I have an upper endoscopy on Wednesday, when my surgeon will look at my hiatal hernia and ulcer which he will fix during my RYN when it is scheduled. But, he will cut some polyps off on Thursday so I will be on a liquid diet Thursday and Greek yogurt for two weeks afterward so I feel you. You have a scheduled date! That's exciting! September surgery buddies!!
Hope4NewMe replied to Slwhurst's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree on the stalls. I know its normal and expected but I still felt like a failure. I wish I could eat chicken more. Its the perfect food to get the protein without the extra fat. Right now I eat mostly ground pork because it has less fat than the beef I used to buy and its even cheaper then beef too. So win win but still not as good as chicken lol. What do you eat for breakfast that has chicken? I have not been liking eggs so breakfast has been my hardest meal for protein unless I eat yogurt. Chili has been my favorite food atm. I bought some Hormel turkey chili and it was pretty yummy and not too bad for me, although seemed high in calories. -
How long did you drink protein shakes after bypass?
Therese22 replied to Mona Ometuruwa's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I Love this and agree, I also appreciate the post up above the protein breakdowns in different foods. I do not do protein shakes everyday but that means I am ensuring I am hitting my protein goals. I love Protein yogurts like the Oikos triple zero brand-can add additional protein powders here; I also add unflavored protein or vanilla flavored protein to my oatmeal ( I love oatmeal in colder weather months fiber + protein)-this can get me to close to 40 grams of protein in the morning . You may need to meal prep to ensure you are getting what you need till you can eyeball it and know. Also, Vitamins are KEY. -

Snacking at night…
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to Muffinman1119's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I was always a nighttime snacker. Now I use it to my advantage, I suppose. I save some of my calories/protein allotment for nighttime. I have yogurt or a proffee at night usually and sometimes I have fruit, it just depends on what I'm feeling that night. I think I consume more protein/calories than most do because I'm extremely active at the gym. Five days of cardio/strength, plus long trail rides on Saturdays. So snacking is fine for me as long as it's decent foods. What kind of snacks are you having? You say you feel like you can take in more during snacks than during meals? It's probably dependent upon the types of foods that you're eating. If you're having solid proteins like chicken, fish, etc during meals, they're more filling and fill you up fast. A lot of "snack foods" ie: chips, cookies, nuts, etc are slider foods so they slide right through your pouch, and you can consume more of those than protein dense foods. -
How long did you drink protein shakes after bypass?
Candigrl1 replied to Mona Ometuruwa's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was drinking at least two protein shakes per day for the first five months after my surgery. Since I couldn't drink dairy I have found some non dairy yogurts. i have slowly stopped drinking my shakes because I have found food is better for me. I just recently found I can drink whey isolate protein water so I sometimes have one of those per day. That way I get my water and some protein in if needed. I track my food intake to make sure to get my protein in and if I'm lacking in protein then I grab a protein water so I don't have to worry about the shakes anymore. -
I had GS in March and I am surprised by how little I can eat still. My breakfast is always a protein shake (which takes me 1-2 hours to finish), lunch is either a sargento balanced breaks or a good culture cottage cheese cup. Dinner is a few bites of whatever my husband cooks....literally 3-4 bites is all. I get full off of a half a cup of soup. I know this is what I wanted, but it is mentally difficult some days as I want to be able to eat enough to feel satisfied and that doesn't happen when you can only have a few bites. Cottage cheese or yogurt is about the only food I can eat a normal amount of and that's getting old!

Does anyone have vitamin suggestions? I am 5 weeks out from surgery. I used bariatric fusion soft chews and the bar is so high now cause it is honestly like candy. I thought of subscribing to it and getting 4 packs at a time but it isn't the best pricing, although if needed I will do it for sure. I initially got them for the first month so I wasn't dealing with massive tablets right away. This week I implemented tablets again and OMG I regret it immediately. I had the WORST nausea since getting this procedure. I was so close to vomiting, my heart was accelerating, and I was shaking. I took it with yogurt in the morning. I haven't had anything happen to me when it comes to my stomach even the first few days after surgery. I am avoiding tablets and capsules for now. My doctor also told me to not use gummies due to the sugar. I am open to gummies if they are sugar free. I would like to eventually buy in bulk but wanted to explore my options before I commit to the soft chews. Does anyone also have suggestions for calcium citrate? Those tablets are even worse! I used caltrate chewables but was reminded it was the wrong one! Let me know what you think folks!

Sugar free situation!!
pintsizedmallrat replied to Aly.C's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I really liked turkey meatballs at that stage. You can do homemade ones (which might be preferable, you absolutely can make them without breadcrumbs in them for NO carbs), or you can buy them in a bag but get quality ones that aren't all filler. An advantage to making your own is you can control how they're seasoned (I made "gyro seasoned" ones and dipped them in tzaziki sauce, for a dollop of extra protein because it was made with greek yogurt...they were actually really good cold in a packed lunch, even). You could do ground chicken with taco seasoning and dip them in salsa. Endless possibilities.
