    January 2020 Surgery Folks

Hi all! RNY on 1/27 for gastroparesis and feed and bile reflux. Had a scrambled egg with a little cheese this morning and was scared bc so many people say they have issues with eggs but I had no issues! Except u get so thirsty when I eat so it's so hard for me not to grab a swig of water ! Glad to see everyone here! Have my two week post op on Tuesday and hope cleared for slight weight machines at the gym because I feel like a pile of goo! Haha I used to go to a kickboxing and CrossFit gym and know I won't be in any shape to do that for a few months but miss the feeling of not being tired and mushy haha Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
  2. I just had a revision from mgb to full bypass on Monday Feb 3rd. I just flew home last night. I went to Dr. Illan and he and his staff are amazing. They are very good about answering all your questions and catering to your companion if you bring one. All my husbands meals were brought right to my room. The hospital is sparkling clean and very modern. You can check it out on facebook at Hospital BC. There are videos of the hospital and testimonials from patients. Dr. Illan and his staff are the best!

Oh also, the entire reason I had this surgery was bc I have (had?) gastroparesis and severe GERD and bile reflux. I am overweight but in otherwise good health and fit and active. My weight didn't bother me. (I mean I'm not mad at the loss lol) If I was going for weightloss I can see the benefit of the sleeve. I just didn't have a choice. My bariatric center was an accredited center of excellence too and my surgeon top rated. I really liked him! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk

    FEP Blue Approval Time

I also have BC/BS. I actually called them directly and they informed me my request for sleeve was approved. My dr only submitted about a week or so ago. They said I would get a letter but haven’t yet, nor have I heard from the dr. But I know I’m approved and will have my surgery on 02/28.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

@Apple1-really messes w your mind huh?! Work our hard and see the scale go up is disheartening. I’ve been back to the gym now for 3 weeks and the scale hasn’t went down. My hub says it’s bc I’m building muscle. Maybe so. When I had my sleeve I lost a lot of muscle. So maybe I’m slowly building it back. Wish looking back that I had lost slower w keeping my muscle up as oppose to losing really fast and losing a lot of muscle. Anyways working at building it back but it sure is depressing to work hard at the gym and not see the reflection on the scale (I weigh every day). Helps me be accountable and catch fluctuations like I have now. Still in my window but at the top of window.
  6. True. If I don’t get at least 7 hrs sleep, I’m going to feel like crap and need to break my fast earlier. Which sucks bc getting enough sleep sometimes is nearly impossible

    Itching at incision sites

Gastric RNY 1/27...This is exactly what I am going thru right now itching all over my body. I have broken out on my arms, legs, face, back and it’s nonstop itchy! I took benedryl and been through two tubes of cortisone 10. I just emailed my doctor told her we have to figure something out bc now I can’t sleep..I’ve been reading up on this and it’s stating it’s common due to allergic reaction to the surgical glue. I went and got some 100% aloe to help give little relief any suggestions? Do you think I should ask for prednisone bc I’ve seen others say that’s what’s helped with this same issue?? Anyone else out there with any suggestions??

    🎈 Pity Party🎈

Thanks so much! Those kind words have totally made my day. The timing will depend both on when I can get the funds saved, and how much time I will need off, which will ultimately depend on which procedure I choose. It’s almost impossible to take any time off in the winter months, but with LOA I could probably swing it. Fingers crossed that I’ll be able to have it done early January 2021. Lots of floaters are looking for hours, bc nobody wants to take vacay in January so I’m betting I’d have an easier time asking for time off then.

I am also insulin resistant and I have PCOS. so I defiantly have to watch my carb intake. But I love chicken fish broccoli spinach salad with lemon. Etc. when I was younger I didn’t notice that all the bs carbs I was eating was not good for me and I was on the Fast track To obesity and addiction. I can drop my weight and I do by myself but I always always always crave sugar and fight my growling tummy. So after I had my baby I immediately got to work on the VSG surgery. Knowing my BMI would be high enough to qualify for surgery. I have the tools cause I have done it for years. But I wanted a little help. And I could never get below 200. So I am hoping to do this with the sleeve tool. But I totally understand what ur saying. I don’t eat keto but I watch all my intakes. And I make healthy choice. I do not eat pasta ( I am Italian and my family looks at me with disgust every family dinner) i never have drank soda or ate chips etc. because of pcos and I know it will pack on me. My hugest weight ever was 336! It was when I was a lot younger before I found out about pcos and insulin resistance. Then I controlled my weight at 240 for years. Got pregnant with baby 3 and decided this is my golden time weight was 275. And I qualified. I am so happy to have this tool to help me.
  11. Yeah, my fasting days are for sure low cal days. I probably got in 700-800 today, and I’m fine with it bc I like this lifestyle. it’s crazy how comfortable the routine becomes
  12. Yep, mine was the day before bc of blood pressure. I was devastated but took a month to get it under control and then had the surgery. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

So I started soft foods at 2 weeks post op and I still have some problems. For eggs I learned the egg whites r the only things I can handle. The yolk has too much fat and it makes me feel horrible it hurts and I feel sick. So I only do a soft scramble egg white. Tofu I can not do. I can do 1/4 of a price of tilapia sometime I will mix it with black beans for extra protein. What silverware are you using? I use my babies spoons lol so they r tiny and I can have about 4-5 bites of that size. If I was using a bigger spoon it would probably be one bite. I learned also that chewing really good helped me ALOT. I thought it was BS at first but then I tried to chew really good defiantly like meats and eggs etc and it helped ALOT!! For comstipation my surgeon and his PA recommends taking stool softener everyday ever 4 hours until you become regular. And if you don’t have a BM within 3 days then take a stimulant laxative to get things moving. They really push push push us to take a stool softener. Because it is not healthy to be backed up and can cause “weight gain” on the scale and get u upset. Due to it being waste weight. Also a lot of high protein diets will make people constipated because we are not getting enough fiber because fruits and grains are off limits. My surgeon only recommends 45-50 grams of protein a day. He said our bodies will not absorb more than that. But follow what your surgeon suggests. There are also DR V videos on protein intake that support my surgeons theory also where too much protein can be a pain with gout etc. anyways off topic lol I agree not a bowel blockage as you wouldn’t be able to keep anything down. It would come up and bile would also come up. Hope this helps
  14. Not me. Work gets intense. And I have to be “on” physically and mentally bc if I lose focus for just a few seconds my lack of focus could result in dire consequences. All in all, yesterday was a fairly low calorie day despite me not fasting. Had a PP shake, then a handful of mixed nuts, then for the sake of speed (we don’t get any kind of scheduled breaks so I eat on the run-literally) I dumped a P3 thingie in some leftover salad. If I’m generous, I prolly had about 600-700 calories, but it was enough. I was getting hunger pains when I got home at 11:30, but I drank down a bottle of water and was able to fall asleep with a combo of journaling/reading/ meditation before 1am. Was able to sleep til almost 9am and now I’m within an hour of class, then I can grab a quick bite to break fast before I’ll need to go to work again. Feeling strong, but I’ve had to drink 2 bottles of water since waking to get through a couple of hunger surges.
  15. It’s all good. Today wasn’t a good fasting option bc I’ve got a longer shift, and I got up way early to run, then go to Pilates. By the time I got home around 10am, I was already feeling the deficient so I settled down with my coffee/protein shake. Besides, today’s gonna be rough at work as we have a floater AND my lead tech is out with family issues. Not a good day to be cranky or hangry, so tomorrow we fast, lol
  16. I also have another one: I wish I would’ve had more mutual hobbies with friends other than eating and drinking out before this process. Your life takes such a 180 when it’s no longer food-centric and I’ve missed a lot of times with friends this year bc they can’t exactly figure out how I fit in anymore. We are all still trying to figure it out, but the social life WILL take a big hit and I’m learning that it’s just unavoidable and that eventually things will get back on track.
  17. Trying not to feel defeated but it’s hard! I’ve lost slowly right out of the gate. HW was 285 in August , currently 218. surgery was 8/14. I have had zero complications, have felt pretty darn good from the start. Always met my protein and water goals. My dietician wants me to up my calories to 1200 a day, which I have been able to do sporadically. I was on a 3 week stall but just lost 1.6 lbs. She also does not care about carbs. She’s like... eat them. Wants me to reach around 90g of protein and 125 g carbs. I started at orange theory fitness (high intensity interval training) and have been going 3x a week. They are hour long classes and my average calorie burn is 450 per class. They are very difficult. When I started this I wanted to be 180 lbs. that is still 30 lbs higher then “normal” BMI. Now I just want to get below 200. Will it happen for me??? It’s just so frustrating bc it seems like for some people the weight just melts off. I guess this shouldn’t be a surprise bc by the time I decided on surgery, and after a lifetime of yo yo dieting I had a hard time losing even 10 lbs.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Holy moly guys! This day last year (Super Bowl Sunday) was my first day of all liquid diet I can remember being cranky and feeling sorry for myself bc here I was on the biggest food event of the year without being able to eat anything! This year, the food isn’t nearly as important to me. We’re not going to any parties, and I’ve got my usual food planned for the day. What a journey this past year has been.
  19. I started seeing my primary doctor to track weight loss (for insurance) in September and met with my surgeon for the first time on Wednesday (1/29) we discussed my options and he told me that he would have some tests ran but that it was my choice on which surgery I chose to have unless my test results suggested otherwise....he scheduled my tests for Friday (1/31) And during my gallbladder ultrasound the ultrasound tech asked me if I was in any pain and when I said no she said “that’s weird because your gallbladder is pretty nasty” I asked what she meant and she said that I had some stones and lots of polyps but not to worry bc the surgeon would just remove it during surgery....has anyone else had this happen? Did it sway yours or your surgeons decision to have the bypass or the sleeve?
  20. Hello- I've lost 80 lbs with another 40 to go til goal. I'm saving up for all the plastic surgery I'm going to want/need, which will include a lower body lift, breast lift, and arm lift. I live just north of Seattle. My insurance will pay for a panniculectomy only, so most of the costs will be out of pocket. I'm considering getting this done out of the country to save on costs, but don't love the idea of flying soon after surgery. I'm considering Vancouver, BC because it is only a 2 hour drive away. Has anyone priced PS in Canada? I imagine the cost might be similar, but there may be savings with our favorable exchange rate. I'd love to hear of anyone who has had their PS in Canada, specifically about cost. Also, if anyone has had PS in Vancouver I'd love recommendations for a surgeon. It's close enough, and I head up there frequently enough anyway for weekend get-aways that getting consultations done there won't be problematic. Thanks in advance for your input!
  21. Stay the course! There is a misconception that having weight loss surgery is somehow the 'easy' way out. I call BS! My husband initially was not supportive when I broached the topic years ago, but after learning more about the process and the health benefits, he was on board, not because the thought of surgery didn't still trouble him, but because he wanted me to be healthy, and happy. I was diagnosed in 2017 with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and have been in remission for over two years now. Though my oncologist could not tell me exactly how I came to have Lymphoma, there were many possible causal factors, one of which? You guessed it, obesity. I knew I needed to act, and after all we'd been through my hubby was all in to make sure my remission continued. I can only speak for myself when I say that the sleeve surgery was one of the best decisions I have ever made for me, physically and emotionally. I have never been happier. Do whatever it takes to get YOU to healthy and happy.
  22. Hi, I was considering Dr.Borland bc I'll be paying out of pocket. Does anyone have pictures of the scars from after his surgeries. There is so many different types or ways to do a gastric sleeve. From only 1 incision to 6; the mm being 12mm - 5mm. I'm nervous bc I dont want huge scars. The google results for 'gastric sleeve scars' is so varied. Some you can barely tell others, look like deep indents. On the surgeon's sites I've looked at in Louisiana none of them say how many incisions or size of sites. That would make huge difference in which one I choose. My other problem is my BMI is 36-37 on average. I do suffer from severe depression & carpenter's knees but I'm concerned, I will get turned down for the surgery. I know Mexico, my BMI only has to be 30. Do you guys know of any doctors that aren't trying to shove "diet more, exercise more" , "we cant do surgery till your BMI is over 40"? I dont do strenuous exercise but I've been walking & do dance 3-5x a week. I took vyvanse but it didnt help me loose weight, but did help me portion better. I've been on it 2yrs & stayed the same weight. I was prescribed Orlistat but didnt loose enough weight to continue on with the side effects. I also meal prep & dont allow processed food & carbs in the house. I'm always on the verge of tears bc I dont understand why I cant loose weight. When people who stop drinking soda loose 50lbs (btw I dont allow soda in the house) . I dont know what I'm doing wrong. Or if it's my birth control, metabolism or anti depressants. I'm stuck with the birth control bc it helps my hormones. & I'd rather be overweight than feel, how I feel without my medication bc I'm suicidal without them. Any advice or information would be appreciated

This is so interesting. I thought i was in maintenance at 148-152, then suddenly dropped 10 more pounds and dropping about 1-1.5 pounds/week again. Surely this will stop within a few weeks, but the daily calorie struggle is real. As far as googling celebs, I recently found myself checking out that one picture of Jennifer Anniston and noticing that my body is probably smaller than hers (albeit surely with much more sags and wrinkles) This reality completely blew me away and I’m still trying to digest the fact that I’m wearing a size 6 now. Even a couple of weeks ago I called myself a 6/8, but even my newer size 8’s (the ones that ran small for 8) are getting baggier. Just for kicks, I tried on some size 4 Ann Taylor pants (bc that brand runs a bit large) and they fit like a glove. Didn’t buy them (because I never pay retail) but it was weird to see my bod fit in size 4 anything.

My secret confession is that I truly hate to cook. I do it a lot, but I can quite effectively hide this “deficiency” by using lots of shortcuts that I’ve depended on for years. Pre-packaged salad packs, pre-cut veggies, P3 packs, deli meat and cheese roll ups, store-bought hummus (rather than homemade), etc.... I love your cooked cereal (sounds delish) and yet I know I’ll probably never do it bc it won’t be something I’ll follow through on.
  25. I can only tell you what I am experiencing. I had the lapband......may a thousand curses befall that BS..... Then I got the sleeve. I kinda loved it. I lost 70+ lbs. But now, 2 years in, I have horrific acid reflux. My surgeon said I was maybe 6mo out for cancer. Precipitated by Barrett's esophagus. Now I am sadly submitting to a gastric bypass. I never wanted it. I still don't. But, hey, it beats cancer! Im unhappy, but I am the reason my stomach has been eviscerated. Sent from my moto e5 supra using BariatricPal mobile app
