    fast food

I adore fast food for the fast salads! I'm older so my priorities may be different. I have enough helath problems that I really want to try to de-age a bit through my diet. I'm interested in eating unprocessed healthy food whenever I can. That part is not so much about losing weight as it is about using the "will power" of the band to be able to stick to healthy eating better than I ever have. It's sort of my last chance at my age and health status. For example, with the band, I am no longer testing as diabetic....but artificial sweetener raises blood sugar as much as sugar does, so I try to stay away except with my morning Protein shake. Just seems like the thing I need to do for me. And I want my cholesterol low so I don't do burgers...but that wasn't as much a choice as a loss of interest since I was banded..... Stuff like that......

How much weight has everyone lost?

50 in 5 is awesome. Sam I am impressed with your stats too. Could you give me an idea of a typical day's meals or you? Are you hungry in between? Do you drink lots of liquids? I see to be unable to get to that magic spot of 2 lbs a week loss and I have had two fills. Maybe i am eating the wrong stuff. Susie
  4. I just got curious based on another person's post. This is really geared to those who had a two week liquids only diet for pre-op. I have to be on two weeks straight prior to surgery of nothing but Protein shakes, Water, crystal light, SF popsicles and SF Jello. I have been "practicing" the new behaviors and substituting shakes for some meals to start getting a feel for things. I am determined to do my full two weeks without cheating. This other person's post stated her doctor told her that the main reason for the pre-op diet was to kick start weight loss and that it was expected that everyone would cheat some. I am curious...did any of you make it through the whole two weeks without cheating? I hope so...I would love to see that it is possible and have that encouragement. If others did it, I know I can too.

    That in between time...

13-14 lbs in a month is way ahead of the curve. Remember, target rate of loss with the band is 1-2 lbs/week on average. And you're prefill, so ANY loss is a bonus. If you were expecting more/faster, then your expectations weren't properly set prior to your surgery. Don't expect perfection...the human organism isn't capable of it, so that's setting yourself up for failure. Nancy 394/270/180

    A Little Disappointed

These were so helpful to read. I really wasn't comparing to others, at least I didn't think so. I was comparing to how I've felt in the past (hungry) and what that resulted in (weight loss). You're all right. The surgery's effect on my body really is a bigger deal than I anticipated. Thanks for the reality check!

    Banded December 22nd, 2010

Hello, I'm in the same boat. I've lost 25lbs since the start of my process to date. My surgery was Dec 13th. I gained a few pounds over the holidays. I am eating less making healthy choices, also exercising and still having trouble losing. Don't get discouraged, from reading alot on these forums this seems to be the norm for a lot of us. As everyone is different some lose right away and some take a few "fills" to start feeling enough restriction to jump start our weight loss. Hang in there and be patient. Your body is also still healing, don't push yourself too much or start regretting the surgery already. This is a slow process. If you are gaining significant amounts of weight back, you should talk to your Doc and/or nutritionist. Cheer up! Your journey has just begun!

    Getting It All In.... How?

Everyone is different & I would always recommend following you drs advice. That being said, I still drink Protein drinks daily as I am not crazy about meat. I also do dairy & Beans & lentils, etc. I love the Premier @ costco & they have 30 g of Protein & 160 cal, 5 g carb, 3 g fat & 1 g sugar. I usually have a couple a day & sip on them. At first I could drink a whole one but not now. I was banded 9/7/12. I've lost 75 lbs & have not had any issues. Actually, I seem to be losing less hair than I did before upping my protein & taking all Vitamins daily. It's a learning process but so worth it! Good luck!
  10. Was on Metformin for 5 years prior to surgery to treat PCOS. It did nothing to help with weightloss, it only helped me to process my insulin better so that my hormones were not so out of whack. Was unable to take the Metformin after surgery (couldn't swallow the pills). Waited until my next visit with endo to discuss it, he did blood work and it turned out due to the weight loss achieved just within the few weeks of pre-op and post-op I no longer needed the Metformin. My PCOS symtoms were gone and I am no longer insulin resistant. I would much rather lose the weight and not need those pills!
  11. I thought about weight loss surgery for years - then 2nd thoughts and an effort to try losing weight again on my own prevailed. 2013 was a turning point - I wasn't doing it on my own, my weight was increasing, my blood pressure was rising and I was mentally going down hill. I knew I needed to do something. I found out in June that the wife of my husband's friend had the lapband and was doing great - that was when I decided to go to the seminar offered by my local hospital. I came home from the seminar and started researching - I gathered information for about 2 week, then had my initial consult with a local doc. That was 08/21/13 - I decided that day, that I was doing down the WLS path. So from the "let's see what there is out there" to "I'm going to do this" it was 3 weeks. And I'll add...I'm one of those people that says, "My only regret is not doing it sooner!" Best of luck to you.

    Update!

New to the group, sleeved on July 2nd, going on my 3rd week and disappointed in weight loss. Weighed 207 day of surgery, down to 194 on the 16th, back up to 196 on the 18th! Not like I ate something really bad...had 6 small boiled shrimp, a protein shake and bowl of egg drop soup...don't see a calorie issue yet gained weight. Not exercising yet...not cleared till 6 weeks. I thought in the first few weeks I'd drop like a lead balloon but not so...worried.

    Pre-op diet

From what I was told the pre-op diet is done to shrink the liver. I was put on a 2 week diet consisting of 3 protein shakes and 2 cups of vegetables a day and water of course. The first couple of days were hard especially the weekend. I'm on day 9 and it's easier. Since I started the pre-op diet my weight loss has slowed down. Maybe you don't need to lose weight before the surgery but I would definitely ask about the pre-op diet, they say being on it makes the surgery easier and more successful.

Glad to see others in the same boat! I hope by may we are all out of this.....

    Stall already?

"only" 9 lbs in two weeks? Your expectations are very very high! Yes, it is completely normal to stop and start your weight loss, at any time, but particularly in the first several weeks after surgery, when your body is focused on healing after major trauma, not on obeying whatever mechanical weight loss expectations we all have When you say "soft solid protein only" does that mean you are not allowed protein shakes? I was able to get my full 75 grams of protein every day starting within 24 hours of surgery, but would never have been able to do it without protein shakes. Frankly I doubt it is realistic to expect anyone to get in their full complement of protein without shakes so soon after surgery, unless maybe if you are just constantly eating -- which to me does not seem like a healthy habit to build up.

    Weight Loss Frustration

Hello Super; Wow - I think you weight loss is tremendous! I am going to repeat good advice already provided. First some people loose weight slowly, but remember the weight is GONE. I too was a self pay for VSG but double your amount as I did my surgery in the US. Worth every penny I spent. My advice? Cut out the carbs - you have a window of great opportunity for the first six months, or so I am told by my surgeon. Create new habits. First of all you should be careful of what you eat right now so early out. Up your protien - eat eggs, greek yogurt, protien shakes as you are still healing. Try canned tuna fish or soft fish. Eliminate potatoes, rice, bread while you are loosing weight. I put the items back into my diet during the holidays...and my weight loss this entire month is around 5 pounds. Yippee I lost weight, but not like I was when watching what I eat.. I am limiting carbs (as I eat a half a biscuit with gravy) starting tomorrow again so I can reach goal (over 70 lbs) by my six month checkup. Up your Protein also to at least 60 grms. Take your Multivitamins which include a b complex suppliment for B Vitamins (B12 is important). Once you are maintaining - you can have a few chips, bread or potatoes as part of your regular meals...but not while loosing weight. Lastly - are you excercising? Walk, walk, walk. Amazing how much easier it is to move now. Get resitance bands (TJ MaXX has cheap) and go to YouTube to follow some easy moves for home. Those few extra burn of calories will make a difference. Muscle burns more calories than fat and you need to burn the fat. No need to go crazy (I hate the gym) but now I go to walk the treadmill or elipse. Wish I was like LilDiva and moved 45 minutes a day. Love her! Keep your spirits up. You are not a failure, nor is your surgery. You did not gain the weight in a month, nor will you loose it all in a month. No regrets...I love my sleeve!
  17. Congrats, that is a MAJOR milestone in your weight loss journey!
  18. Well, the standard advice that surgeons give is to wait 1 year post-op. But i have to admit, I likes my wine... I've indulged and haven't had any difficulties. I would say the only thing I notice is if I have a week when I've had wine more often than not, my weight loss slows. So for that reason, i now only drink on special occasions, like my birthday. It's not worth it to me to sabotage my weight loss. I would suggest you ask your surgeon what they think you should do because everyone is different. This is just my $0.02.
  19. Well, we did it, Dr. Seger and I. He'd had a tough time without my help. I went in at 10:00 AM and got to my room around 12:15 PM. I spent two nights in the hospital enjoying the best care a person could possibly get. I started this journey at 335 lbs and today weighted in at 299. I'm in the middle of my clear liquid diet and am doing well. I've had two total knee replacements in pervious years and can already feel the releif the weight loss is bringing to my joints. I am a diabetic and have not needed insulin at all since two days prior to going into the hospital; because of the pre-surgery weight loss diet. If you haven't already figured it out, I am excited about my future weight loss and I am happy to be on this journey with you all. One final note, a thank you to Forensikchic for her conviencing talk at the seminar I attended and her more recent encouragements.

    Scared

There are no guarantees. Some people have issues with reflux, others don't. Some people get sick other don't. Even though you are self pay, I would locate and attend an informational seminar in your area. Most of your concerns are covered at those. Additionally these are the type of questions to take when you meet the surgeon. Ask them about these and what they will do to prevent this from happening. Personally speaking I had no issues with pain, or food. I go out to eat regularly, I drink alcohol on occasion. I don't eat a lot of bread, but that it not because I get sick, it's a conscious choice. I have had a truly uneventful, relatively easy first year, but I work at it every single day. I work out, I monitor what I eat as opposed to the mindless eat I used to do, and I take my Vitamins & supplements regularly. For the most part there is nothing I ate pre-op that I can't eat now. Only the amounts have changed. My last bit of advice would be to make a list of things your ARE willing to do to change your life and make this surgery a success. In short, how will you use this tool to not only ensure that your lose weight and stay healthy, but also that you can maintain the weight loss. If you don't have any changes you are willing to make for this to happen, you may want to save your money.

    RNY to sleeve?

I asked similar questions of the surgeon and bariatric internist I saw. They both told me that at one year, RNY has slightly higher weight loss, but that long term they are equal. I also asked both if they thought I'd be more suited to one or the other. They both really like the sleeve. The internist told me that if she needed WLS, that she would pick the sleeve for herself. She also said that if I really liked sweets she would recommend RNY over the sleeve because dumping syndrome would be helpful to keep that in check. Also that they might recommend it over the sleeve if I were diabetic, because they said people often go into remission with diabites within days with RNY. Although that wasn't a reason to exclude the sleeve, as it also goes away, but may take a little longer.
  22. I'm a bit of a hermit these days. It's really hard for me to even go outside looking and feeling how I do. I don't do things with my friends, love life is nonexistent... Did anybody's social life improve after surgery & weight loss?
  23. Tammie G, How have you been doing since your surgery with weight loss? Your chicken rice cream soup sounds delicious. You inspired me to look for recipes online. I found one for pumpkin custard - see below. Ingredients Directions 1 can (15oz) 100% pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie mix) 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice, or to taste 1 cup egg substitute or 2 whole eggs and 4 egg whites 1 cup 2% milk 6 packets Splenda, or to taste Put all ingredients in medium mixing bowl. Blend with whisk or hand held mixer until smooth. Equally distribute between ramekins. Place baking dish with ramekins into the oven. Bake for 60 minutes or until centers are set. You can tell if it is set if a knife can be put into the center of the custard and pulled out clean. Remove pan from oven and place on pot holders or a trivet. Carefully remove ramekins from water. Use tongs, if needed. Serve warm or cold. Nutrition Information Per Serving: Calories 65, Fat 1.2 gr, Carbohydrate 7.5 gr, Protein 6.3 grams. The nutrition information is based on using egg substitute and no whole eggs.

Diet tips from those "NOT" in the know.

I was doing a weight loss program at a chicago hospital. I was following a 1200kcal diet but had only lost 2 pounds in a week. The doctor had bigger expectations so he told me "Just don't eat! You have got to stop eating. You will see your weight drop if you just stop eating" Ok, maybe he ment 'don't overeat' but the way he phrased it, I was PISSED and wrote a complaint. I did not sign up for that kind of treatment. Other than that, I have been told not to eat for 3 days to shrink my stomach, drink lots of vinegar, smoke, etc. Just ridiculus stuff. None of it healthy.
