    5 months post op today

Thanks. And yes, 64 lbs in 5 months is crazy For food, I am generally right around 800-900 calories, with around 70 grams of protein. I am low carb, but not super low, so I'm happy between 50-80 grams net (excluding my fiber). My typical day includes: Breakfast: Coffee w/ sugar free creamer and a Protein shake. I add a fiber supplement as well. Lunch Varies, but something like chicken salad on whole grain bread (1 slice) or ground chicken w/ beans and taco seasoning Dinner Varies as well, but generally chicken of some sort with veggies. I generally don't snack. I have just started to feel hungry again so if I am really hungry I may have some greek yogurt. I also occasionally have a SF popsicle at night.
  2. My dad arrives from India today so I have to make something his 90-year body (and teeth) can enjoy, AND tomorrow is soft foods day for us! yay! We were told to eat meats that were out of a crockpot or pressure cooker so they were soft. So here goes. This is massively modified from Anupy Singla's Indian Crockpot book a) not make enough to feed the entire state of Texas and not to blow the roof off your head with her version of spice. I'm Indian. Believe me when I tell you, this is the BEST chicken curry I have ever had and the EASIEST. Ingredients 1 onion peeled & quartered 5 garlic cloves peeled 2 inches ginger root sliced roughly 2 tomatoes quartered I tsp salt 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tsp turmeric 1 tsp garam masala, can buy ready mixed or I will post my fav, easy recipe shortly 1/2 cup greek yogurt 1.5 lbs of chicken, skinned 1 bag of baby spinach 1 2 inch piece cinnamon 4 green cardamom 2 whole clove Method 1. In a food processor, grind together everything except the chicken and the spinach and the whole spics. Make a nice, smooth paste. This may take a few minutes, be patient. 2. Put the chicken pieces in a crockpot, and pour over the yummy-smelling sauce you just made. Add the whole spices, cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. 3. Chop up the spinach and add during the last hour of cooking. 4. Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 6. Us Sleevers may have to eat the chicken without the sauce and eat the sauce separately or something. Makes 6 servings of chicken (3 oz each, 21 gms of Protein each EDIT: Forgot the tomatoes in the first version and also the whole spices! brain is mush

    A New Day

I'm here. Been busy this weekend. Yesterday did my bike riding and hung out by my friend's house for a while before riding back. Today, I did a ton of yardwork - mowing the lawn (it was way long as my mower was broken until Brad fixed it last Sunday), trimmed bushes, weed whacked, etc. Even washed off my patio. After that, I drove to go pick up a dorm fridge that one of Ericka's friends was selling for Audrey. So she put it in my car and it was rattling the whole way home... So after I put it in my garage, I open it and died laughing.... there were 5 cans of beer in it. Well, I gave them to my neighbor. He was happy and I got a good laugh. Carole, I am sooooo sorry to hear about Sushi. It is so hard to be faced with their ailing health and very difficult too if you do have to make a decision like that. Big hug to you for strength during this difficult time. Terri, thank you for your encouragement and sharing your struggles as well. One thing I am noticing, aside from me being disgusted with myself and my behavior, but when I am active I also don't want to eat crap or eat as much. So, that is something I need to keep up with too. Michelle, thanks for all your encouragement as well and sharing some food ideas. I am actually going to try that. I have some pulled pork (no sauce) from costco and I could easily mix it in like you suggested. Thanks!!!! I bought some apples and fruits today, and getting healthier foods around me. I do like my Greek yogurt as a snack too. I buy the case of light and fit Dannon ones from Costco too and they are only 80 calories and high Protein. I made a casserole of sorts too with lean beef, veggies and tomato sauce. Thanks for being a great cheerleader. Janet, I was so saddened to hear about your friend's story. I was elated to see this a.m. on FB that she is doing well and things look very hopeful! That is so incredible. I am sooooo happy for her and her family. I love you from the bottom (and top) of my butt too! Thanks for the formatting tip too. It works! Weird. Nicole, isn't it awesome to already see your clothes getting loose! That is awesome. I agree, it's clearance racks until you reach goal. Enjoy your concert. I am jealous! Dee, I hope the "computer repair" guy that took your $ gets his day! How can people do that? Plus, we need you back on internet! :)How was the amusement park?

Cant Believe I did this 2 Myself!

Hey Kjojojr. Thanks for the input. Can you tell me what cream soups you ate during this liquid phase. I would love to know? So, you can pretty much eat anything now? You don't feel deprived? I think I am feeling deprived right now and getting depressed over it. I never realized my relationship with food until now. It was like a slap in the face. When I came home from the hospital, my husband had made chicken for the kids. I wasn't hungry, but I wanted the chicken very badly. It was in that moment, I knew my relationship with food was way more than what I thought it was. I thought it was bad choices and too much food. I realized at that moment that I seek food for comfort. It was so strange as it evoked all these crazy emotions which I am still feeling right now. I couldn't sleep so I got up and I on here. Needing your guy's support. Which you never fail to give me. LOVE YOU FOR THAT...don't know what I would do without it. I go back and forth. I feel like I want to tell the doctor on my post op check..TAKE IT OUT!! Then I think..what the hell am I thinking. I started getting freaked out at the idea of something being inside me. Anyway, not sure if anyone else has actually had thoughts of 'taking it out'... But if you could tell me what cream soups you had, that would be great! Did you have to puree them? I just am not finding the puree'd soups very good. Kinda grosses me out. So, I have be doing the protien shakes, V8, the dannons yogurt smoothies, Jello, and I sucked on a candy kiss and get this..I sucked on a piece of chicken and spit it out so I wouldn't swallow it. I was horrified at myself for doing it too. But it satisfied some need. I wasn't really hungry, just wanted to taste some regular food. Ya, the emotional side is surprising to me because I am not normally that emotional and pretty practical about things. It is a reality check. THANKS GUYS!

    I am banded

I asked my doc specifically and from day one he said non-fat milk was fine. I was SO glad because that's the base of my Protein shakes and I was worried I would have to do without those. They are my main salvation!!! I'm doing better as well. The Fourth was indeed hard with all the lovely smells coming from the neighbors yards. I went to a baseball game and EVERYTHING smelled good but when I actually looked at the food, it was like "bleah...no way". So that's good. My friend INSISTED we needed to get ice cream after the game and I didn't want to. I ended up buying a non-fat yogurt and not even eating it. It's still in my freezer. THAT IS A HUGE CHANGE FOR ME!!! I'm usually a little b*tch for ice cream!! Also doing better. Back at work after a week and two days off. It feels SO weird to be back at work! Oh well, gotta do it if I'm going to pay off this surgery. Don't want them to come reposses my band!! The bloat is gone, I lost 13 lbs REALLY fast and then my body seems to have put on the brakes, which is okay. Thirteen pounds in one week is pretty hard on a body. Still have a bad burning next to my port and it hurts if I sit for too long (was in a bit of agony at the baseball game.....also when something good would happen and I'd yell real loud...OUCH). Overall doing good. Having ZERO trouble getting liquids down, even thick liquids. I can see how I'm going to need a fill sooner rather than later!!

    Midnight Snack Anyone???/

Drink water, go exercise, eat only something like yogurt or cottage cheese. Remember eating too close to bedtime may encourage nighttime reflux. You don't want this this early on/or ever. Don't stay up late - go to bed instead.

    Banded Today!! 10/16/07

Hello Melissa, Topdowndog, and luvmy3boyz.... I am also an October 16th bandster and doing pretty good on the fourth day out... I was a little weak today, but I think it was from being on the clear liquid diet and needing something a little more. I had a yogurt smoothie and a bowl of cream of wheat and I feel much better... I haven't had any problems with gas pains and was lucky not to get a sore throat... My throat would get dry and hoarse but that was about it... I only got the nausea feeling once, but I did get the hiccups alot, but a couple sips of Water would take care of that.... I am very pleased with my progress so far and I'm looking forward to a healthier way of life... Good luck and many blessings to all of the October bandsters and keep us posted on your journey...

    The strangest thing..

Yup. I've found that food actually works better with this particular pill than anything. It may be that the yogurt I had was too thin. It's not the normal one I use. I did think I had drank enough and given it enough time to have gone on through. I'm still not sure what was going on, but it wasn't much fun. lol.
  10. Hi Louise,, Thank you so much for the Birthday Wish....That was so nice of you! I thought forsure this feeling in my throat was from the cottage cheese and yogurt. It may be just extra mucos from the 2...... I hope it's nothing to worry about. Have a great night. Doriana
  11. Hi Nancy, Sorry I didn't respond back to you yesterday... Woody sent me a recipie.... Here it is: Cottage cheese (1/2 cup) Yogurt (fat free, any flavour or even just plain fat free) ice cubes *** I use the magic bullet** and Volia!!! Much easier to get your cottege cheese in this way.... I really love it.... Good luck with your pre-diet.....I'm on day #6...I feel okay right now. Tonight I have the nutrional seminar, so I'm looking forward to that too. Have a great day. Doriana
  12. *Scrambled eggs with a bit of cottage cheese mixed in to make them super moist *Refried beans with melted cheese and green chili sauce *Hummus *Guacamole *Pureed tuna fish (yes, this was good with a dab of mustard) *Plain Greek yogurt flavored with protein powder and/or Torani syrups *Any kind of soup I could find that didn't contain rice or noodles....pureed with unflavored protein powder added *I also continued with my protein drinks thoughout all stages as they are an easy way to help meet protein and fluid goals.

    What to eat

@@saphfyre14, As the others said, be sure to eat what your surgeon and nutritionist tell you to eat. If they haven’t told you anything yet, ask them. They should be able to give you as much information as you want. That said, your diet will probably have a lot of healthy foods and not many unhealthy ones! You will not be able to eat much volume at first, so you will need to start with the Protein foods at each meal and snack (if your surgeon and nutritionist tell you to include snacks). That might include eggs, chicken, tuna, beef, turkey, Beans, cottage cheese, yogurt, cheese, and other lean and nutritious sources of protein. You might not be able to tolerate all of those foods at first; you’ll have to see how it goes. Eventually, you can also add peanuts and nuts, but those can take longer. Vegetables come next to your meals and Snacks, since veggies are low calorie and filling. You’ll eat cooked ones first since they’re easier to tolerate. Examples include cooked carrots and green beans. It’ll probably take you a really long time to be able to eat salad. Other healthy foods to include will probably be fruit, whole grains like oatmeal, and starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes in small servings. And what won’t you be eating? Well, probably anything that’s high-calorie and low-nutrient: think sugary, processed, fatty, fried, and starchy foods. Cake, white Pasta, pizza, chips, fried chicken, and ice cream are a few examples. Alcohol is also forbidden. Many sleeve patients are able to tolerate almost everything, although you might have trouble with certain foods. Some patients include small amounts of junk food because they know they can satisfy their cravings and stay in control, while others avoid all trigger foods. Hope that gives you some idea!

How much weight did you lose pre-op?

18.3ibs - pure milk and yogurt diet stayed only 8 days before surgery Sent from my SM-A300H using the BariatricPal App
  15. I'm not on regular food yet, but if I try to sip too soon after eating something soft like yogurt, I'll get nauseous. There're also the issues of sending food through your stomach more quickly and potentially stretching out your stomach if you eat and drink at the same time.

    Does your stomach feel normal?

I buy the Bariatric Fusion meal replacement powder. It is intended/sold as an actual meal replacement product - i.e. just add water and that's your meal, but I started out getting it because they sell it in single serving packets and I wanted to try something without spending $40 or more on a huge tub, in case it tasted awful. I figured out that each tablespoon of it has 7 grams of protein (I figured out all the macros for my food journal, but don't remember off the top of my head). At first I just added one tbs to various things to test out the texture/flavor. I put it in Vitamin Water and while it didn't add a texture or different flavor, I feel like it may have made it taste a little sweeter or something - I'm not exactly sure but I didn't like it. But I can add it to literally everything else - yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, homemade frozen protein pops & fruit pops, and it has no added flavor or texture to me whatsoever, and being up to 3 tbs per serving, has really made it easier to get my protein in. I'm buying it by the tub now. Everyone is different, but I highly recommend it.

    Anyone for October 2020?

No soft food until week 4-5 - yikes. Did she/he provide any recommendations on how to get there other than siping on protein shakes all day? And by soft, can you have yogurt, cottage cheese, and oatmeal now? Adding another protein shake would add some calories and plenty of protein until you hit week 4 later this week. Even then, an egg is only about 6 gas of protein compared to the 20-30 in 11oz of protein shake.

    weight watchers?

Weight Watchers is bringing out a brand new program in the New Year here in Australia - are they doing so in the States too? I have the entire home point program - I dont like the meetings much, I've got better things to do than sit around discussing how satisifying it is to mix jelly crystals in natural yogurt if you're after something sweet, lol. Puhlease! It just doesnt replace a Mars bar does it? Hehehe. But I love the concept of points, whereas I hate counting calories, go figure, it's basically the same thing.

    diverticulitis and the band

I have diverticulities and spastic colon. Since getting the band I haven't had diarreah. In fact, just the opposite which is all new to me. Having a spastic colon I was used to having food "turn" on me and heading for the bathroom. I now eat an Activia, a type of yogurt, everyday. It helps keep you regular without having to take Fiber. You might want to give this a try. You must have had a diverticuli get infected and that is no fun. I try to stay away from foods that I know will cause me problems. Hope you are on the mend. PM me if you have any additional questions or concerns. Its something I've had for years, but the band only 7 weeks.
  21. I followed Dr. Aceves post op diet to the letter. Since he did your revision, I sincerely doubt you need to worry about a leak. He has never had one, so I can't see any reason why you would be his first. On my 10 days of full liquid, I had egg drop Soup from the Chinese restaurant. I had a lot of different Protein shakes and tomato soup with cottage cheese blended in a blender so that it was smooth and creamy. I also had yogurt. On my 10 days of soft foods, I ate a lot of chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad. I choose whatever foods were on the list I was given. When I moved to solids, I decided I didn't like the feeling so I stayed on mushies longer and tried a couple bites of solids per day. It was not easy in the beginning. I got full from 2-4 bites of food. One time I ate some fish and thought I was going to explode. I needed to learn to stop eating before I felt full. I was much more full 20 min after I was done eating than I was at the table. I bought those little cans of already made chicken salad. I looked at my portion on my plate and imagined if it would fit in that can. If it was more than that, I knew I would be sorry later. I am much better now at knowing when to stop. I can eat anything I want and I just know by looking at it when to stop. It's hard to get a full signal Feel free to ask anything you need to. We are all happy to help!

    Diet After Surgery

I can still have eggs and cheese, Nonfat Greek yogurt, and FairLife milk. I asked about those. And I got GENEPRO to add to smoothies or other foods. I'm still going to cover my tush to at least get Protein. I'm just basically saying I was stressed not to count nutritional numbers. I wanted to see if my program was similar to everyone else's. Regardless, I have to follow their plan, he's my only choice of doctor and I have to drive nearly 6 hours to see him lol. But they have been doing this program many years, so I just hope it works. Something must be right if they are still in business and have nearly a 5 star rating. I was just a bit shocked is all. Still a bit lost as to exactly where to start on the bean portion. I've never been much of a bean eater lol. Guess I will learn. I have Beano on hand at least lol! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Weighing your food on a food scale

Disclaimer: I am still pre-op (until Wednesday). I also know that weighing/measuring/and recording foods are going to be my biggest challenge. That said: I do believe from everything I have learned that this will be vital to my success. At least, it will be in the first several months while I retrain my body to eat the right foods in the right portions. In the simplest of explanations: By weighing and measuring your food, you can be sure accurately eat proper portions and nutrient amounts. When we "eyeball" amounts, we tend to serve ourselves more than we are supposed to eat at one time. When we do that, we are overeating. We also are more unsure of what amounts of nutrients we are eating (too many carbs, too little protein). My "small" bowl may only hold 4 ounces of food, your "small" bowl" may hold 6-8 oz of food. That is a huge difference, and can mean the difference in being successful or not with your weight loss. The goal is to get the right portion sizes with the right nutrient amounts. And in keeping portion sizes small, you are reducing the risk of stretching your stomach back. When you do that, you are more hungry and you want to eat more. I hate measuring, so right now I buy individual sized servings of anything I can. 1 serving of tuna or chicken. 1 serving of greek yogurt or v-8 juice. Or whatever foods I have been told to eat. Post-op... I know I will be eating less at each meal for a while. So, I purchased 2oz and 4oz disposable containers. I will use them to put things like my jello and yogurt into until I am up to a full serving. For tracking food, I am learning to use the Bariastic app... but there are other apps you can use. I like this one as it is pretty simple to use, and I can take a picture of UPC codes for my foods. I also bought scales for food not long ago. Another tool I bought was a bariatric portions plate/bowl. Waste of money? Maybe. But I am hoping it's plate bowl sizes and visuals will retrain me to automatically serve myself smaller portions. I have 2 bowls, 2 plates, and some smaller spoons/forks. Eventually I hope to not have to measure everything, but for the first 6 months to a year I will do my best to measure and track EVERYTHING.

    what surprised you?

Sometimes restriction takes a bit of time to feel. Due to cut nerves. But I get what you're saying. For me, it depends on the foods that I eat, some offer more restriction than others. Like grilled chicken, denser proteins offer more restriction than say, Greek yogurt or crockpot shredded chicken. The bypass is just a tool, and it will not do all of the work for us, which I have to be mindful of now because when I had a lap band, that thing was so restrictive that almost everything got stuck and felt dense. So when you can, choose denser proteins and weigh/measure your food so your stomach and brain learns what your new "full" feels like. I didn't lose my hunger either like a lot of people do. And I work out and lift weights and that has always made me hungrier, especially when I started weights again at 6 weeks post op. I never experienced nausea, but I know acid can cause nausea. Are you on an acid reducer?
  25. OMgosh, 20 grams of protein in one meal - yikes! I looked at my log and the most I've ever gotten from "real food" was 12, and that was yogurt! On solid food (other than protein bars which I now use for breakfast), the most I've ever hit was 9!
