    getting banded

well, the day is finally almost here! my dh is getting banded this tuesday the 18th. after being postponed and having to have his thyroid removed, he is ready. im really excited to start this thing together. i just hit my 3 week out mark so im ready to get started with him. the doc was pretty pleased with his progress so far. he has lost 25 lbs pre op so that will make it that much easier. he had a really hard time telling his family what he was doing. his mom turned out to be very supportive but on the other hand, his dad did everything he could to discourage him. i know hes having a hard time with this but i told him we are in this together and we will succeed with or without his support.
  2. It's been a slow weight lost but I feel great. Down 85 pounds since surgery date. March 27, 2012. 100 pounds all together.... I have hit a major stall. Haven't lost weight.. Help!

    Goal weight

When I first started, my goal was about 185, which was a reasonable expectation based on surgeon's averages. Then, as I started losing, and the weight was just falling off and I saw others achieve a normal BMI, I changed it to 145. Then, as time went on and the weight stopped coming off, no matter what I did, I changed it to 155. I have never actually hit that number, and at three years out it's a lofty goal in the back of my mind. Now my real goal is to maintain my loss. The number on the scale still matters to me, but less than it used to. I am a smallish, normal sized woman, and thanks to plastics, I don't look like I've ever been overweight. That's success beyond my wildest dreams. That's a long answer to say you may have to be flexible.

    Protein Shakes Banned

My surgeon and NUT don't like Protein shakes either, as they are high in unnecessary calories and can often become a crutch to many WLS patients. They really, really want us eating real protein from food for many reasons once we are able, about 6 weeks out - one, it's healthier without added calories, sugar, etc, and food protein is obviously digested much slower compared to Protein drinks. That being said, they BOTH realize they are needed in the first few weeks as there is no other way to get our caloric needs in while our tummies are so swollen. They also both say that protein is grossly overstated and many think they need to get in protein, protein, protein, but really we only need about 70 gms a day. People are run down and tired after surgery because of lack of carbs, not protein. So, I think protein shakes are good, even needed in the first few weeks. It's too bad that the Kaiser folks are being so totally absolutely against it.....are we supposed to be eating chicken breast 2 days after surgery?

    Hungry!

I am 4 weeks post op this week, I have not lost anything. I go for my first fill on the 6th. But I feel hungry and before you know it I am looking for something to eat, I feel like I am slipping backwards. The more hungry I get the less I pay attention to what and how I eat. Good news is I haven't gained anything either! Any advice on this? Can some one please explain the "green zone" to me?

    Recovery time off...

I had the duodenal switch, and my program allowed for 4 weeks off for it. I was very active after about a week, though, and restless, so I went back to work after 3 weeks. My girlfriend, however, had the sleeve done through the same program. They gave her the 4 weeks off as well and she took the whole time. She was a little slower on healing, though, and getting active, so she didn't really get more active for about 2 weeks. We both have desk jobs.

    Recovery time off...

I took off three weeks and this time I feel I really need the time. Starting to work again next Thursday. A two day week is nice to have for starters.
  9. So i'm about 3 months out and still eat and drink slowly. At 3 weeks....have you started to "feel" the food move into your stomach yet? I forget when I started feeling that...but usually what I do is take a bit, see how it goes down and if it doesn't have any trouble, then I'm okay depending on what it is, cream of wheat I can eat with less angst...meat I have to take really slowly.

    Pain on right side

Did you have your stomach pulled out in your right or left side? If it was your right side that probably explains your pain. However, my stomach was pulled out from my left side and about two weeks after surgery I had horrible pain on my right side. The doctor said that I likely pulled a muscle and it would pass. It lasted for about three weeks and finally just passed. An option would be to contact your doctor to be on the safe side .
  11. :clap2: I have my first fill scheduled for Thursday, 4 weeks post op. I had a great surgeon in Mexico, Roberto Rumbaut, MD, but was REALLY lucky to find a surgeon in Cincinnati who is forward thinking about taking "Mexican" patients, who is INTERESTED in the well-being of his patients and is totally missing the GOD complex most surgeons seem afflicted with!! Actually, he posts on here and on Obesityhelp.com and understands the importance of being available to patients when you need him!!! WOW, this is too cool. He charges $300 for the first fill for "Mexican" patients which includes a consult with a dietitian, but only $150 thereafter. I am amazed and really glad. Seems to me the fills are paramount, and that one needs a surgeon who understands the WHOLE picture. HERE we have one!! Trace Curry, MD :first:

    Sweating

Hi there! I'm no doctor, but I did the same thing - since you were just sleeved last week, I think it's all the meds that have been pumped in your body for surgery and pain. It will subside, I promise, as your body gets rid of all of the chemicals. Good luck!!!

    Driving or Exercising?

I was cleared for driving and exercising 3 weeks post op.
  14. On Monday july 16th is my VSG surgery.. Im in the liquid diet x almost two weeks. I lost 5 pounds in the first week.. Going thru the second week and now im going crazy.. Im craving food.. What to do???? Pleaseee.. Thank u
  15. I'm just on the 3rd week post op but I'll tell you about the change after the surgery. I have no longer hunger but I know I MUST eat for energy and the amount of food that I can eat is 2 tablespoons. I have sleeved in France so the restriction post-op for diet is a bit different, my doctor said I can eat anything I want but blended. The first two weeks it has to be only Fluid (but I can eat yogurt) then the 3rd week I can start eating pureed food like potato smashed. Oh, yes, but no candies no soda, all sweet stuff. Eat a little at a time (4 times a day) on the fix hour, I'm not hungry but I just eat on the meal time. Eat very small amount and slowly and the most important thing is at least 1 L of Water everyday 20 minutes before and after the meal. After the research I'd done on my own, like you, I asked him about Protein shake and he said, no need, no supplementary diet of any kind is necessary at the moment. He told me to eat only small amount of natural food. Seems like he needs me to get used to my new stomach first and learn that I can live on a very small amount of food Personally I try to eat as much as protein as possible like eggs, purred fish, Greek yogurt with purred fruits, cooked brocoli purred, mainly protein, fruits and vegetable. One time I tried Pasta purred with salmon and I felt sick, so no pasta at the moment. My doctor said I have 3 years post-op to learn to eat right to maintain the weight for life. I guess that at some point the hunger will return, I will be able to eat more than 2 spoons per meal but at least the experience of being obese for 20 years and receiving the second chance should remind me to pick the best choice of food and move my (hopefully smaller) ass to exercise to keep this gift for life. And I know I can do it because during the pre-op I tried the low carb diet to see if I can make it after the surgery (my surgeon never asked me to lose weight before the surgery) and it worked pretty well actually, I wasn't really too strict because I ate small amont of carb only for lunch or Breakfast but not for dinner and I lost 13 lbs in 2 months before the surgery between my first consultation with my surgeon and the date of operation. What's different is I've lost almost 19 lbs in 20 days post-op woo hoo!
  16. I changed my pic to one of me and my BF to honor how amazing he was this past week. I had revision surgery on Monday and without his help, it would have been so much more difficult. We are long distance now and as soon as I mentioned the revision he said he was coming up from Florida. I never knew he had such a fear of hospitals and still really did not get it until my sis told me how freaked out he was at times during and after my surgery. He is such a rock in a crisis that this really blew me away. Our past is a very loooong and rocky one. During the time apart there has been lots of therapy, time and a failed marriage (his) and we have reunited more mature and ready for this. He told me last night that he really was afraid of losing me on the table. I was so taken aback by this. He was amazing. He tries to understand the addiction I have with food and never criticizes and has been my #1 cheering section all along. We were not together when I did 1st surgery, but was supportive. I see so many people on here who have some very negative SO experiences, that I know I am that I am lucky to have him. We truly have been through the "Thick" and "Thin".

    I cheated...

Thanks everyone. I am feeling better. I am just so darn hungry (I have no fill in and will not get one until 4 weeks post-op)! I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!
  18. 61 and feeling 31!!!!! My blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure are now all in the normal range and I feel so well. I am walking 3 miles a day on the treadmill at the maximum incline. Although my weight loss seems to have stalled I still would not change a thing - I just wish I had been banded years ago.
  19. I need some advice. I've read that restriction etc can change in relation to the friendly monthly visitor. Mine just arrived today and am totally bloated. I'm scheduled for a fill in 2 days - will hopefully be my first. (I say hopefully as I attempted to get my first fill last week, but the doc was unsuccessful in finding the port.) Do I bother going this week to have him try again? I'm self-pay, and want to avoid doing it under x-ray until its absolutley necessary. I guess my question is: are fills more difficult at that time of month? Would I be better off waiting until next week? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

First fill with aunt flo visiting - bad idea?

I would totally wait (especially if you're self pay). I got my first fill the day before my period ended and he barely put anything in (my doc does the fills under fluoroscopy so you can see the restriction levels). He put some in and removed some twice, so there was hardly anything in there and I was completely ravenous the whole day and every day after. It's not too bad now, but my portion sizes are still over 8 ozn so I'm getting another fill next week. I feel like I wasted my time getting that first fill.

    16 wks out...i think

Went for my 4th fill today. Added another .6 cc so for a total of 3.8 cc in a 9cc band. I think that is right. i have lost another 2 lbs that I struggled with again these past 2 wks. I am not satified with 1 lb a week but hopefully will have more restriction. I pray for more restriction....I want the band to work for me now. Until then I will have to stay focused and weigh my portions and not eat between meals. Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi everyone Im shannon. I had the lapband done two years ago. Im a nurse and worked in a hospital untill about three months ago (went to home health). while working @ the hospital, there were lots of us who had lapbands.we started doing our own fills. i ended up having too much saline in my port and couldn't swallow my zoloft pill & my morning coffee wouldn't go down. I ended up getting a coworker to take out 1.5cc of saline about 7 months ago. I just put a 0.5cc fill in today. I have a 4cc band. I have gained back 20 lbs. so, i now pray that there is still some hope for me, that i can reach my goal wt of 145 lbs. I started @ 247 lbs and now weigh 200 lbs.

    Dinner?

I'm 5 weeks out. A big pleasure in my adult life has been spending time in the kitchen creating meals that are unique, visually pleasing. Like chicken piccata with wine garlic sauce, etc. I would take pleasure creating it then enjoying a long dinner with my husband and a glass of wine. These days, I am back to creating these meals (but substituting healthier ingredients). The thing that bothers me is to have this lovely meal with all the aromas, sit down and only be able to eat literally two bites. I am happy to read that it gets better with time. Eventually I hope to be able to eat at least 4 oz or a cup.

    Hungry

I am due for a fill, but can't get in to see the doc for another 3 weeks. This will be my first fill. Meanwhile, I'm really hungry and am not losing much weight. I'm being very careful but I've not been able to get to the pool for exercise. I have arthritis in my knee so they advised against walking outside the water. Any thought about what to do about the hungry thing or even the exercise that I'm not getting. I'm feeling pretty frustrated at this point and want the weight off so that my knee starts to feel better.

    It's worth it!!!!!

So I went and met with the personal trainer yesterday. She is very straight to the point and willing to help. She knows her stuff I must say!!! She is ranked in the top 50 personal trainers in the United States! So no big deal we are talking about nutrition and what I have to do. 1100 Calories sounds like ALOT  But like she broke it down for me and if I eat around five small meals a day.. that makes each meal only about 240 to 250 calories!!! :phanvan That sounds like NOTHING!!!! But I am real positive. The nice thing is she is not paper thin, but yet she looks really really good! So the dreaded question.. how much does she charge! I thought about 600 a month. I don't know how trainers work! HAHAHAHAHAHA Boy did I make myself laugh :whoo: For 12 weeks and four times a week the grand total is $2,280.00. Thank god for tax return season is all I have to say! To me her training me for three months is WORTH it. So I meet with her today we are going to just do measurements... the DREADED measurments! :cry But... I the good thing is I won't have to dread measurments or getting on the scale ever AGAIN!!!!! :biggrin1: I cannot wait to see myself in 12 weeks, just the improvements. You know she said something wise to me and it really stuck. "people think that eating does not control them losing weight, and it is the key factor, you cannot just do 2 hours of cardio and strength training and not watch your calories, and you cannot just do cardio and skip what you eat." Makes alot of sense from that perspective. She said we have to have ALL of the pieces of the puzzle. So true, and my whole life I have NEVER had all the pieces to the puzzle! All I can say is LOOK OUT WORLD CAUSE HERE I COME!!!!! :peace::peace:
