  1. So sorry to hear your family didn't support the band to sleeve revision. Maybe with some time and education about it all, they will support it. I would ask my parents and spouse to go talk to your surgeon. With all of the issues you are having with the band, you really should get it taken out. My surgeon told me I needed to take my band out or I would eventually end up in the ER having serious complications. Had my band removed 08/2015 and the sleeve done 01/2016. I've lost 42 pounds so far and I feel so much better since I had the band removed. Good luck!

Lap banders - Where are you?

Good luck with that. The people here who had the band had it removed because the band causes so many problems. I did lose weight with the band but I would have gained it all back because of band problems. I started gaining it back and have my revision to sleeve. Go to lap band talk.com and you'll find some people who have the band but most of them have not had it long term. There aren't a lot of people out there who still have bands after a few years.
  3. In my research phase, which was 7 yrs, I didn't like the high number of people that were having problems with their Band and coming on to the sites in regards to seeking revisions. Ironically your reason for not liking the Sleeve due to it's permanency was the exact reason I wanted this procedure. I didn't want to go through a Revision later to have to get the Sleeve anyway, if I had problems with the Band. I am self pay and barely managed to get one procedure, much less a second one later. Even if I had of been covered under an insurance plan, a lot of the insurance companies will only pay for one bariatric surgery, so I just didn't want to take any chances. On the Band itself, there were lots of reports of people even yrs out throwing up, getting food stuck, only the junk type food going down easy, erosions, slippages, etc. Then to see so many people have to revise, it was just very discouraging to me. Also the Sleeve is the only surgery other than the Duodenal Switch where we lose the ghrelin, the hunger hormone, which decreases our hungry greatly and in some cases completely. I can't imagine how hard it would be to only have a tiny capacity to hold food but still have my huge appetite. As someone else suggested, I would definitely check out the complication and revision boards as well as here. Good luck in your research! :smile1:
  4. Hi all I'm having my revision lap band to bypass on Monday Oct 22..I was just wondering if anyone has gone thru this process and how your surgery went. Also was wondering if anyone has any advice....I'm on day 6 of pre op diet and I'm down 12 lbs already.

    Stalls Da&%it!!!!

Hi neon, how are you feeling now? How is your achalasia? I have a sleeve and developed achalasia last year. I'm having a Heller Myotomy and revision to gastric bypass on 9/13. My surgeon said I would likely have really horrible and uncontrollable reflux if I didn't revise to a bypass, and I still have about 100lbs to lose from my initial surgery (I was over 400# to begin with). Curious to know more about your achalasia diagnosis and if you're able to eat better now that you've been healing for a few months.

    Questions - Sleeve 2/10/13

I was sleeved in November, not a revision. I take Prilosec every day and have no problems with heart burn or acid reflux. I have some hunger, but nothing like the intensity I had for years before surgery, and now I can either ignore it (which I could rarely do pre-op) or I can satisfy it with significantly less food. And since I'm now in the habit of dense-protein-first, I'm a whole lot more likely to make wise food choices. I've had no stomach spasms, and once my incisions stopped bothering me (which was about a week after surgery) I haven't had any other pain whatsoever. The best part, though, is the safety net aspect of the sleeve: When I eventually do give in to a craving and eat until I'm stuffed -- and I'm sure it will happen eventually -- my sleeve will limit the damage I can do in one sitting. I won't be ABLE to eat the entire package of Oreos at one go, ever again! Yippeeee! Then there are the NSVs: I'm off insulin, not taking any meds for my type II diabetes now. I'm off my BP med. I no longer need a daily NSAID for my OA and it's not because I'm just putting up with the discomfort - it is GONE! I'm no longer too warm all the time; I've changed the thermostat in my house from 70 to 73 degrees. I could go on re smaller clothes, etc., but you get the idea. I Love My Sleeve! And I love the suport I get on this forum! Thank you one and all.

  9. That's a fairly old report and does not include the rate of revision from Sleeve to Bypass in the "complications" It also seems to include the dumping in the Bypass but not for the Sleeve as far as "complications". The rate of Sleeve to Bypass revision is fairly high. This also doesn't include or account for the medical advancements that have become common practice over the past several years AND seems to include older post op issues from older forms of the surgery. And, lets talk about the fact that Gastric Bypass happens more often than the Sleeve, thus again skewing the real numbers. Case by case. They would come out about even. Except with the looming revision for the sleeve. I had the band. I needed revision. So I had to have 2 surgeries thus increasing my overall risk as opposed to getting the bypass first which would have lowered my overall risk. Any information, when taken without all facts can seem scary. But you need to look at the entire picture. 273 SGs were performed of which 6.6% (n = 18) were converted to RYGB most commonly due to inadequate weight loss (65.3%) and severe reflux (26.1%). https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28416180 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29496440 You've got approx. a 10% chance that you'll need revision to another surgery. So, maybe 1 surgery vs 1 surgery without factoring in revision increasing the risks because now you've had 2 surgeries instead of 1, leaving out dumping for the sleeve but adding it in for the bypass, sure, it looks like the bypass is a much more dangerous surgery. When you factor EVERYTHING in... pretty sure they break even if not a little in favor of the bypass. You still can't undo the sleeve though, no matter what happens. 70-90% of your stomach is gone. Nothing usually gets removed in the bypass, just moved around. Again, either way. Good luck with your choice.
  10. Yes!!!! Sing it my sistah!!!! This surgery (both RNY and Sleeve) are largely what you make of them. But, the sleeve does carry a bigger risk of GERD and revision risks (IMHO). So if you have any reflux issues or asthma/upper respiratory issues, I'd sure choose RNY.
  11. Hi friends, I was sleeved almost 5 months ago and all was well until I tried to stop taking my pantoprozole around 8 weeks. I have had hearburn everyday since if I do not take the medicine. I do not want to take an acid reducer long term. It scares the crap out of me. Just trying to see if anyone has had the same issue? Did it get better? Did you get a revision? I am so scared to get a revision but reflux is scary and no fun at all. It can cause long term issues and damage that scares me also. I also know someone who was revised and is still having issues with reflux. Any encouragement is greatly appreciated. [emoji171] Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. Hi everyone ! I am currently going through my band to sleeve revision. I had the band removed Oct 1, and am having my sleeve done January 13th in Mexico. I had the privilege of coming across a blog last week by a fellow sleever who is a year and a half out. She faithfully blogged and told her story once a week for over a year. It was very encouraging to me and I couldn't put it down after I started reading. Her blog is at http://www.queenofcrop.com/about/ I thought I would attempt to do the same, and at some point, maybe it will help someone else in their journey. So if you are interested, here it is: http://www.band2sleevejourney.com
  13. My reason for the revision to bypass was due to the excruciating pain I suffered from the port and the inability to get solid food down a lot of the time. I was in so much pain and was always sick becase of it. I would never even cross my mind to have another procdeure and NOT get this band/port out. It was the root of my problems. If you have the chance to get it out, do it.

    Sleeve revision

Thanks, Matt. My surgeon has already broached the subject of a revision due to reflux. He'll decide in a couple months, after I hit the 6 month mark on my sleeve. I had been wondering about all the pre-op stuff.

    What do I do?

I agree with the previous posters in that you should be seeing your bariatric surgeon. My understanding that a revision is done if something is wrong with the band (erosion, slippage) and you need to determine if that is truly the case (and from what I've heard, you'd know just from how you feel--vomiting, etc.). It sounds like you are in need of an adjustment. What has been your post-op care plan with your surgeon? It's great that you are getting back to basics, but without a proper restriction level, your tool is simply a car without gas at this point. You need to be sure it's working properly along with you. While it shouldn't do all the work, it should be helping you to eat less while you are doing your part. Good luck!
  16. :confused:So I was banded in December of 2005 and I successfully lost over 100 lbs. and since then and now I have gained back almost 40 lbs. and am super depressed. I have been disappointed with myself. I joined the gym, started following rules, etc. and I still haven't had success. I talked with my PCP today and he suggested a revision surgery. I am honestly skeptical about doing this and would rather attempt to do it without a revision. Can someone please let me know there is help for me. I need advise on how to jump start the weight loss, control the eating and bad habits, and get back in the routine of doing right by the band.

    Pre-Op Diet Scares Me Most

Lucky you! My doc had me do it twice, first at BMI 46 for my band and then at BMI 36 for my revision. I had to stick to milk and yoghurt (nothing else at all) and it was awful...but I did it!

    Lapband to Sleeve?

Had the band for 8 months, it was nothing short of h*ll. I revised because my port flipped, and then caused the tubing to tug on my stomach. I was in chronic pain on a daily basis. That doesn't include all of the puking, food getting stuck, and slow weight loss. It's just bad news, and I don't miss my band at all. I'm elated with my life with the sleeve.
  21. This is actually my 2nd post -- just fumbling my way around the forum. From everything I'm hearing, it seems like I probably won't lose the 200 lbs. I want to lose. I guess I'll be lucky if I lose 100 lb. I keep going round and round in my mind what to do. Truthfully, now with a more complete picture -- thanks to others who have responded -- I think the sleeve would be my best bet. Chances are good that I'd lose a substantial amount with the sleeve, and if I needed a revision, I could easily convert into the bypass. That said, Medicare, does not cover the sleeve yet. It's anyone's guess as to when they will -- anywhere from 18 months to 5 years. I don't have the time to wait. I am too scared to have the bypass, because of my age, weight, prior history of a heart attack and co-morbidities. I'm sure I will pass all of the pre-op tests with flying colors. But I'm afraid to be on the table for the length of time it takes to do a bypass and the fact that it's 5x more dangerous than any other procedure. Since I had extensive abdominal surgery in the past, they don't know if scarring will be an issue that will force an open surgery vs. laparoscopic. And while I'm not having any heart problems, who knows what will happen during surgery. My doc tells me I'm already at a higher risk for pretty much everything, including a pulmonary embolism. Now all I have to do is find the right doc. My doc is probably the best and most experienced surgeon around, but I do not like his support staff (particularly the P.A. who will be doing the fills). Right now I'm on the medically supervised diet and doing quite well, to my surprise I've already lost 12 of the 20 pounds I need to drop without much effort. I'm not actually following the "diet" just being practical about what and how much I eat. Best wishes and healing thoughts to all.

    Laproscopic Or Open

I had laproscopic sleeve, not a revision, and I had a fast recovery, minimal bleeding according to my surgeon and a fast recovery. Only on pain meds for 1.5 days, anti nauseau for 2 days and have been great ever since. I agree with Lisa's Hope that an experienced surgeon is the key. Good Luck

    Throwing up

I had a similar problem. This was about 7-8 yrs. after a revision. Ended up having surgery for a hiatal hernia. Showed most of my anatomy (gastric pouch) was above the diaphrahm. Anyway, it solved the problem.
  25. Wow! That is entirely up to you and your sureon, but personally, I would be greedy and have the surgery. I, also, had a slip and a revision. But, I did not have a sleeve put in. I am struggling in maintenance due to having 5 cc in my band and not being able to tolerate any more than that. Maintenance is a lot harder than losing weight to me. Best wishes whatever you do decide. Karen
