My Dr.s Advice for a Happy Hour/Beer Girl
DeLarla replied to soonergirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I don't know why we feel the need to apologize for our drinking, so pooh-pooh on anybody that pooh-poohs it, and thanks for sharing what your doc said. I personally drink too much out of obsession, but I don't think it's because I'm an alcholoic, it's just my constant need to consume mass quantities of anything. Put a gallon of juice in front of me and I'll drink the gallon. Show me to the ice cream and I'll eat the whole quart. Diet Pepsi by the truckload. Nachos, margueritas - it doesn't matter, I'm a consuming machine. I quit booze for almost 2 years and never missed it, but lately I've been drinking more than ever, and it started during my Band surgery when the Mexican doctors asked me how many shots of Tequila I wanted in my IV bag! I know the rules say to avoid caloric beverages. The rules also dictate that we should all lose all of our excess body weight and maitain the loss for the rest of our lives by following all the band rules. Damn, if it were that easy we wouldn't need a band. And those of us that have one would be at goal right now. -
2 days post lap band
Strike Up the Band replied to SWEETGRACE's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi . . . I am also 3 days out of surgery and the only annoying thing is the gas. I seem to have a spasm in my chest from time to time like I need to burp, but nothing comes up. It's a little scary. I hope that's all it is. Anyway, I haven't stepped onto the scale yet. Too afraid yet. My spirits were in the dumps yesterday, but much better today. The hold that food had on my mind leaves me also at a loss of what to do with my time. I guess I'll go back to knitting. I'm excited about the future too. -
Wow... I'm glad to see that u are doing better... now your weight loss should pick up a lot....:Dancing_wub::thumbup::Dancing_wub:

Three Weeks Out Still With Port Pain?
amo32112 replied to Brandi18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also got banded on the 21st (3 weeks out) and am having port pain. My surgeon just called to check on me and I asked him about it and he assured me it is normal because it is the only place they put sutures in the facia. So i guess we're all doing fine! Just gotta hang in there and enjoy the weight loss -
Krystal, I am glad you have another shot! And sleep apnea isn't so bad : ) I was diagnosed in January and got my cpap machine after my surgery in February. Seems the sleep apnea goes away for many people with weight loss. That is definitely what I am hoping for. I have adjusted to the machine fairly well, and I think I might be feeling a little better. If you do get one, see if they will let you have two masks. I started with the nostril pillows and about 2 weeks later also got a small mask. I rotate back and forth between the two; just depends on how I feel. good luck! I am hoping you will need the cpap just enough to qualify for surgery - then you can ditch it later! : )

Afrykanvyolet replied to jackie506's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Jacki, Congratulations! I wish you much success during your journey to shedding some weight. I know I read a couple of posts where there were a few 15 yr old that had the surgery done in Mexico. Maybe if you do a search, you'll find it. I do think that you are doing a wonderful job in helping your daughter with her weight loss. -
Living with lapband diet
IndioGirl55 replied to Stevelovesmusic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Jacqui You are an inspiration:) - I was just banded 7/17 and still am on full liquids - can't wait for puree - I miss my veggies too.. also the actual protien of an animal or fish - I don't like the protein powders too much - You have done excellent on your weight loss - and what you said above says it all and you are the proof it works. Congrats...:clap2: -
Living with lapband diet
Jachut replied to Stevelovesmusic's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I can tolerate some skins, like on potatoes or stone fruits, etc but I cant eat apple skins. I had the same worries though - I read everything on here and here there is a very protein focussed trend, it really worried me since to me a chicken breast and a few vegetables does not make a healthy meal - personally I consider the vegetables the more important of the two foods. I have continued to eat my way, I'm in Australia and we're not given the same guidelines anyway. Guess what? There's more than one way to skin a cat. I'm healthy, happy, normal weight, have all my hair and I most definitely dont eat enough protein by American standards. I'm also quite confident that I have a better long term outlook for bowel health and blood chemistry because I do eat carbs in good quanities - wholegrains, fruits and vegetables. If I can only fit so much in, I will always always choose my vegies over my protein. I actually decided not to be banded initially because the protein heavy, vegetable poor (by which I mean quantity - in Australia we have a guideline of 2 fruit, five veg every single day) diet seemed unhealthy to me. But I've found that you can eat any way you damn well please, as long as its healthy, lowish in fat, and low enough in calories and you exercise, you'll lose weight, barring of course that some people absolutely do have metabolic issues that are best managed by low carb diets. That's not to diss ANYONE's dietary choices, its simply what I believe is relevant to myself and my lifestyle. I also felt that mental health is an enormous part of our health in general and that achieving normality - giving up this stupid obsession with dieting, counting, foodwatching forever, for once and for all - was every single bit as important as achieving a healthy weight. If I have perfect nutrition but spend all freaking day obsessing over it, I have not achieved good health! So I eat what I want, when I want, most of the time its good, sometimes its not, I use food appropriately - for nutrition and as a social custom also, I can partake of things like sweet foods and alcohol moderately and my diet is most definitely NOT perfect. But because I have made such gains in terms of the mental side of it, I'd consider my outcome an extremely successful one. -
Congratulations! It's great to know that the loss can be maintained!

the more I get with the site I will be looking for more help. i've started the design and am setting up the general layout of the pages so that its all set to go to add info. my husband and I spoke tonight and he plans to make a database where those who have been banded can take a survey and that information will be shown in charts and easy to follow info. an example would be After one week how much did you loose (week2,3,4,5,6, etc) the results would show a graph or chart representing how much average weight loss per week. another example when did you move onto solid foods week 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. coming up with these questions are gonna be the hardest for me since there is no real place to find such info. any suggestions would be great. once i get it into motion i will of course need a lot of people willing to take the survey and share the experience. on the survey would also be questions.. like this.. but each question would have max # of chars so that they were short answers explain what this surgery has done for you and your life would you recommend this surgery to a friend, if so why? whats one thing you wish you would have know but didnt? etc.... anyone who wants to help me come up with things to include on a survey would be much appreciated.. you can email me katie@Griffonco.com or post it.. either way =)

Mandy, by that time you should be totally healed, and you might even forget you have had surgery. If you haven't had a fill by that time, be aware that you will be able to eat anything you want, and everything you want, in possibly the same quantities as preband. Try to remember that just because you can doesn't mean you should, or be prepared for the consequences of overindulging (i.e., no weight loss, and possibly regain of whatever you may lose immediately post-op). Whether you'll be able to ride the rides depends on your tolerance for such things. But your surgery will not be a hindrance at all.

Thanks vinesqueen and jqpublic for responding. I am not losing as fast as most of you did in the beginning, but it's still coming off. I'm down 13 lbs. in 3 weeks. I reinjured myself when I bent over and stretched at the same time to pick up a toy off the floor. My doc said it's probably a pulled muscle, but something tells me it's not. It's been 6 days and I still hurt with certain movements. I'll have to put off walking until my pain is gone! Thanks again for your responses and good luck to both of you!!! jqpublic, good luck on your surgery. Keep up the good work!!! You've had such an amazing weight loss. Good for you and congratulations!

I can't wait - I am so excited - I keep trying to visualize myself thin again....I can't wait! I really hope it works - part of me has this feeling like I will fail at this because I have failed at so many different weight loss attempts - I didn't tell too many people. I work with 200 women and I only told 3 of them. In my family, it's just my oldest daughter, my mom and my sisters that know. I am so happy that I am working until Sunday afternoon - I hope the time flies - I just got my time...1:00!!!! UGH! I don't have to be at the hospital until 11:30...I will go stir crazy..... ok - bye bye - say an extra prayer for me - thanks Amy

Post Op Day 5....so Far So Good :)
sherryd replied to littlemiss0428's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had it on 10/23 and have had a rough go of it. Seems my stomach didn't like being messed with. I had to stay in hospital for four days and am slowly improving. Some cramping but am told that is because I was drinking too fast and too much at once. Hope this bad feeling isn't permanent. Too sick to enjoy the weight loss yet....hope for a better week! -
Am wondering about the effects of massage on our weight losing bodies. I am not a massage therapist or a doctor, but I have some thoughts about the benefits of it, particularly for WLS. Would love to hear others's thoughts on this topic. Of course, I am trying to justify as many massages as my pocketbook can afford, but it is an interesting topic. My thoughts on why massage is beneficial for WLS (again, purely conjecture here, no data to back any of this up) It gets your blood, lymph, circulation etc. moving, which can only be beneficial in aiding weight loss It smooths out fat lumps and helps you lose more evenly The moisturizing oils smoothed into the skin helps with sagging and loose skin Makes you feel good and less stressed so you are better able to stay on plan, eat right, and avoid emotional eating or drinking and junk food Gives you more body awareness, helps you to learn to love your body, improves self image and esteem So what do y'all think?

I had my surgery on January 13th, prior to the surgery I had lost 13 pounds on my own, after the surgery I lost an additional 35 for a total of 48 pounds. that was over 3 months ago, I have no lost a single point since. I know I have heard of stalls but three months? I am so discouraged right now and having such a hard time dealing with it all. I met with my dr in june when it first started and he said we would talk about it at my next visit which is not until September 9th but by then it will be over 3 1/2 months and no weight loss. I have tried more food, less food, Protein shakes...then no Protein Shakes. I go to the gym 4 - 5 times a week I just don't know what to do

I was encouraged to start walking while still in the hospital also. You will still be healing for some time, so listen to your body and don't over do things. Walking will help jump start the weight loss and aide the healing. Best of luck in your journey.

I guess I just want to make certain it isn't going to be just another failed and expensive, not to mention invasive diet. My daughter calmed me a lot today telling me about a documentary she saw on it and how well they did, she is VERY supportive of me having it done. So is my son, so is my husband. My personal feeling right now is I need rapid weight loss due to health conditions and this seems to promise that.. I think I would be too scared to eat too much! The weight loss when I haven't lost anything significant for ages due to not being able to exercise at this weight would be a huge reward to me. I will NEVER EVER get this weight again.. I don't care what I have to do. I am attending a seminar next week with my husband and meeting the surgeon on Aug 18. With my insurance and the timeline they say I could be banded in 8 weeks.

What's Your Favorite Work Out?
Rootman replied to Stacey Nicole's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I swim. No matter WHAT you do if you don't enjoy it on some level there is little chance you will stick to it. So if swimming isn't for you then try Zumba, if not Zumba then try biking, if not biking try weight lifting, if not weight lifting try running, etc. etc. etc. The point is try SOMETHING to keep yourself moving. The sleeve is the master tool to start the weight loss, it's totally up to you to keep it up and enhance the weight loss and gain in physical fitness and to reap the benefits of exercise. You WILL feel better, you WILL have more energy, you WILL get around better and you WILL benefit. Just keep trying stuff till something lights your fire. -
I was thinking it was going to stop around 6 months but it hasn't slowed at all. I had very thick hair but it's down to half and I'm afraid of it doesn't stop I'll be bald!!!

Hope the paperwork is enough for you. I had the same situation. I didn’t have the visits but I had to have documentation of prior weight loss failed attempts and my doctors notes were not overly supportive. Thank musk they approved me because I was a pure mess when the nurse told me it didn’t look good.

This May Sound Repetitive, But....
Ms skinniness replied to happy1957's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I remember going to the ER bc I thought I had a blood clot, but didn't. I was about 5 or 6 weeks out and the ER doc looked at me and said, "you have alot of gas." There might be a leak. This was his non knowledge of weight loss procedure, and he did get in touch with a doc in Kaiser's facility that told him this is normal. This is before I learned about PPI's and acid making me feel hungry. My surgeon's office neglected to tell about PPI for stomach acid. I learned that from our site here. Love everyone here. Thank you everyone. Happy New Year!
