Dental issue after WLS
Prestonandme replied to Michele 2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
There are several ongoing threads addressing dental problems post-surgery. I and others have experienced tooth loss, increased decay, etc. Many of us have been prescribed special fluoride toothpaste and one mentioned that she was given fluoride varnish to prevent decay. If you are experiencing increased dental problems, work closely with your dentist, schedule regular maintenance and cleaning appointments, and make sure that your annual blood work shows no deficiencies. -
I am looking forward to getting off this CPAP machine!!

I got mine about a month ago after sleep study was required for my surgery. I have such a hard time getting to sleep, the mask irritates my skin, I feel like I can't breathe. I'm really hoping I can get rid of it after surgery and some weight loss as well. I did see that you are meant to take it to the hospital when you stay and I was hoping to just... not. I don't want to wear this in the hospital after surgery! -
Has anyone had any issues with their dental care since their Weight loss surgeries? I’ve heard that you can get a prescription toothpaste at the dentist that has extra fluoride...that is helpful. I don’t recall anything being discussed about the risks of WLS on your teeth??

BCBS Federal Standard
Tina Leo replied to Grahamco's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! I used Memorial Weight Loss and Wellness Center in Springfield. Doesn't much help with the Chicagoland area, sorry. But, I do know they take patients from all over. They handled literally everything with BCBSIL. Both times - initial surgery and revision 11 years later. Dr. Orlando Icaza - surgeon. PAs and NPs on staff - are FABULOUS. -
Maybe mind surgery would have been better than WLS!
catwoman7 replied to free2beMi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
from what I've heard, weight loss is usually quite a bit slower with revisions than it is with a "virgin" surgery -
Getting used to different portion sizes. I still have a mental “seriously?!?” When I eat dinner and I’m done after like 3 bites. Physically I’m satisfied, mentally I’m not, if that makes sense. Mourning the loss of food as a treat or a reward. This is how I got into this mess in the first place, but doesn’t mean that I don’t still kinda wish I could deal with a bad day by ordering a huge pizza and buying an assortment of candy. Now I just have to deal with my feelings like a well adjusted adult or something? Not cool. (Joking....kinda)

Thanks for the opportunity to ask some questions! Do you still separate drinking and eating? Do you drink any alcohol and how does it affect you now? Overall have you created enough healthy change that you’ll be able to maintain your loss? How do your portion sizes compare to the first year?

Hi everyone, after strolling and reading several posts I decided to join this forum. Everyone seems genuinely interested in and concerned for others. I am excited to have finally officially started my weight loss journey. I had gastric sleeve surgery on March 30th 2021. My starting weight was 362 and my current weight is 330. My surgeon is Dr. Tananchai A. Lucktong. I would recommend him to anyone. I am retired, I have two adult children and two grandchildren, hence the name Nannee2-2. Thanks for allowing me to join.

Hey just curious if anybody is doing the new Weight Watchers program? I think it’s called WW wellness wins now a day. Anyway, I am the slowest “revisionist” ever. (From band to sleeve) it’s been 9 months and only down 42 lbs. however I do feel I could be better at developing better habits such as drinking my water, exercising more, not giving into temptations etc. I just had foot surgery last month and can’t walk for another 2 months. But I can swim soon. I thought maybe WW would help me develop better habits & give me more structure. At this point 9 months out from revision surgery I have very little restriction, never experienced the pain or sickness others mentioned when eating too much & I am so discouraged with my slow weight loss. I know it’s just a tool but shouldn’t I feel full? Desperately seeking for something to just click in my head & get it together! Lord help me!!! -
Scared of losing weight
WishMeSmaller replied to APJPollett's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Catwoman is right. Lots of factors go into amount and appearance of loose skin as you lose weight. Everyone is different. Here is my take: I have loose skin on my tummy, completely deflated boobs, the loose skin on my very toned thighs jiggles as I walk, and my butt🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ The loose skin on my butt causes me to feel like I am sitting on something lumpy all the time. The butt issue is really the only thing uncomfortable for me. The rest is cosmetic only. I am also the healthiest I have been in my life. I am no longer diabetic. My blood pressure is on the low side of normal and my cholesterol is perfect without any medications (I took meds for both, before). I no longer have sleep apnea. I am scheduled for plastic surgery at the end of May, but I would still be ecstatic with my new body, even if I could not have plastic surgery. My husband is very supportive and we laugh a lot about my loose skin. Other than true body-con clothing, you can’t see the loose skin in my clothes. I would rather have good health than the ability to wear body-con clothes. Check out my pics below. I lost 120 pounds-ish. I will say, at some phases during my weight loss process, I did have some pretty bad dysmorphia related to the lumps and bumps from loose skin, but it did get better. All the best to you as you lose weight. 😊 -
Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
catwoman7 replied to Sincerely.blj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have a virgin RNY, not a revision, but I had almost no pain with this surgery. Part of me wondered at first if he actually even did the surgery... most people getting a revision do get an immediate relief from GERD (not all - but most), and additional weight loss is around 20 lbs, but I'm sure that depends on your BMI and how hard you work at losing weight. I'm sure you can find people who've lost more than that. -
Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
Sincerely.blj posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
this is my first post. Hey YALL 😀 I'm Bridgette I had the lap-band placed, corrected, removed within 3yrs of each other back in 2013. Had it removed in 2015. After gaining most of the 80lbs I loss back, I had the VSG in 2017.Since then I have been stuck at 260 for several months, I think the lowest I've gotten with the sleeve was 240ish even with diet and exercise.. the scale is not moving. I'm electing to have the bypass because of the severe GERDS and also to aid in my weight loss. I must admit after ALL of the surgeries I've had. I'm terrified of this one. I keep hearing about the pain being worse than any other. I wanted to get some feedback from others who have had similar surgeries. Can you all post before and after weight loss, and how you all handled the pain with this surgery.. My nerves are bad. Am I over thinking this or are my fears valid? Let me know. Feel free to follow my journey on my IG @sincerely.blj I'll follow back Also I downloaded the app for this website, Am I tripping or is it not working?😂 -
Serious Teeth problems after gastric bypass several years ago???
Grammie2 replied to Grammie2's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I’m sorry you thought I don’t trust my doctors. I didn’t mean that at all. They give you a list of all different things that can happen to you as a result of the Gastric Bypass surgery, and I did not see anything about bone loss in your jaw. I don’t know that it would have changed my mind about the surgery, but it’s good to know that this is also a possibility. I trust my doctors and I am still glad I had the surgery. -
Sorry about the abdominal cramping but it seems like you are doing awesome now!!!! That is great news on weight loss in just a month out!!!! So glad you are doing great! Thank you, I hope so too. I should know something in the next few weeks. You keep doing great!!!

stalls are a normal part of weight loss. I think your body just has to stop once in awhile and recalibrate before it goes on. Almost everyone here has that early stall (within the first month post-op). No need to go back to a liquid diet. Just stick to your eating plan and stay off the scale for a few days. The stall WILL break and you'll be on your way again.

5 weeks post-op slow weight loss
fitgal2021 replied to fitgal2021's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
We really do have the same stats lol. I'm just worried that I'll lose a certain amount of weight, but not as much as I want to. I know it sounds childish, but I won't be 100% satisfied if, let's say, I get to 160lbs and won't go down from that. 140lb is like a minimum weight loss achievement for me. -
Can We Talk About...Birth Control?

Mirena IUD here and I love it. Stopped periods (until hormone dump from 120 lb loss kinda threw that out the window) but now it’s evening back out to no periods again. I’ll be up for a new one in a few years and I’ll def be getting it. I hated the daily pills so much and I was forever forgetting them. -
Emotional wreck
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to weakminded's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I won’t say I “did it” on my own, but I did lose almost 60 lbs before my surgery on my own. One of my friends asked why I went though with surgery after losing so much weight on my own, and my answer was that I’ve always been able to lose weight, I’ve just never been able to keep it off. Surgery gave me the help I needed to continue going. I would have backtracked by now without surgery, and I’d be continuing to fight an uphill battle because weight loss starts off easy, and gets harder the further you go. The preop 6 month diet isn’t to see if you can do it on your own, it’s the insurance trying to get people to give up so they can disqualify you. (Sorry, but I work with insurance and yes there’s a part that is making sure people are committed etc etc but mostly it’s to reduce costs by weeding people out). Give yourself the time you need, and push out that surgery date if you want. You’re the customer, you tell them when you want to do this. But really strongly consider if you are truly committed and confident you can do this on your own and maintain it for life, or if you’re nervous about surgery. It’s fine to be nervous! I was terrified. But almost 6 months and 120+ lbs later, I am so proud of the commitment I made to give myself another chance at life. -
Don’t know if I got angry but I used to get frustrated if I was out & couldn’t find anything suitable to eat. I got caught up in making sure I ate regularly to meet my protein & fluid goals. If I missed a meal or my routine was out, I felt I wouldn’t meet the goals for the day & thought this was a bad thing. I eventually realised that this is just life & I couldn’t control everything. It really wasn’t a big deal if I didn’t meet my goals one day as long as I did the next. I always carry a protein bar in my bag now just in case. Congrats on your surgery & loss so far.

Your response made me laugh. Not liking onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cauliflower does not sabotage weight loss, lol. But, not continuing to stick to your plan will probably dampen your mood a bit more because that won't help you get out the stall. This process is a journey as others have said. I'm glad that many people responded to your post with support, but also taking about the reality of this process. Talking with your dietitian seems to be the best next step. And, since you have questions about your food plan, I would just stick to whatever information is provided on the list of foods for your current stage until you speak with the dietitian so you dont choose something that might impact your tummy, healing process, or weightloss without realizing it. Good luck, and it's way to early to say it's a waste. So, hopefully you will move past that mindset soon. Good night.

Yes, a message or call to the dietitian sounds like a good idea. My program lists no bread, crackers, pasta, cereal, rice, etc. at all within the first 6 weeks during healing and surgery recovery. Plus, does not help with weight loss. The carbs probably deter progress. I think it's also something about swelling in the tummy.

Ok so here is my situation: My daughter was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at age 5 and is now 29 years old. She got married two years ago and has two adorable baby girls. She is in full renal failure and needs a kidney. I am a match. I have been through all medical and psych testing and I am a match. The U of M has given me until May 20th to lose 10 more pounds to become an "ideal match" to do surgery in June. As an ideal match we can blast through so much garbage and red tape and just do the transplant it would be a miracle. No exchange program or waiting, just straight up pick the date, go in and do the transplant. We did not know about the need for a transplant when I decided to have the weight loss surgery in November. Had I not done the surgery then, there is no way I would have ever been able to get to the ideal weight of 140 to 150 pounds to donate for her, I was 235 pounds then! My labs came back with a clean bill of health, no high cholesterol , my a1c was 5.1, everything was good except my b12 was low but that is not a factor for this at all, just a vitamin tweek I do have a question to all you veterans out there: any idea how I can push the weight loss!!!!! I am still losing but 10 pounds in 20 days could be a tough one. I am running about 3 miles every other day , drinking about a gallon of water every day, 90 grams of protein and keeping it under 900 calories and under 30 grams of carbs. I am trying to do some yoga every day, I wanted to start weights but I don't want to do that now because I am afraid that muscle weighing more than fat could be a problem now......yikes. In normal circumstance I wouldn't focus much on the scale and I would try to focus on the measurements but the transplant team focuses on the scale only at this point.

I will typically go back to how I ate when I was in the weight loss phase - little to no processed foods, limited carbs, no drinking calories, protein first, then non-starchy veggies. I literally cannot overeat on nutrient-dense, protein-rich food. My tummy won't let me. So by sticking to that kind of food, the calories take care of themselves.
