    Mediterranean Style Eating

I was a vegan for about 2 years and vegetarian for a year after that, all leading up to my WLS. (Btw-- I am not a moral veg-eater. I used to eat meat, then got sick, and couldn't eat it anymore.) In getting my sleeve done, my nutritionist and I devised a plan on how I'd be able to get my Protein in / keep the carbs low. I stuck vegetarian. I get my protein from Protein shakes , meatless ground beef (I swear this actually tastes pretty good), Beans, eggs, cheese and Greek yogurt (which I had to build up a tolerance to). I'm getting about 70-80g of protein in daily right now. My nutritionist also has me taking B12 and Vitamin D every other day (so I'm not missing nutrients with my intake). Oddly enough I was willing to attempt red meat / whatever to get my protein in, because I want to be very successful post-op, but when I tried it still made me really sick. ????

    List your lapband confessions here.

Oh darnit. I have to come here and put a new confession here. For the sake of accountability, I'm forcing myself to admit my screw-ups to my friends on-line. So, I had a fill Thursday - and was religiously compliant with my day of Clear liquids, my day of full liquids and the FIRST day of my mushies. Did great today until we got together with a bunch of friends for dinner tonight. They made homemade pizzas. I brought yogurt with me, and ate it while they ate the pizza. The smell of that pizza was just too much. I scraped the cheese and mushrooms off one slice (chewed it well) and ate it up. Shouldn't have done that, because one wasn't enough. Scraped the toppings off a second slice - ate it also. At this point, I feel like I've blown it already, so I eat a handful of strawberries and M&M's to round it out. (Thank goodness I had at least enough willpower to avoid the crust) Luckily, nothing stuck, and nothing came back up. However, I am crazy full, and have wicked gas as a punishment. Note to self - avoid smell of pizza.

    Hubby's Comment

Not all of us go through "bandster hell". After surgery I was on 2 weeks liquid, 2 weeks mushy, 2 weeks soft but it really wasn't that hard. With the liquid stage I was allowed as much as I wanted so if I was feeling hungry I just ate(drank) some more. I was allowed things like Soups, custard, yogurt, jelly etc. Yes it gets boring and it felt great to be able to go onto mushies but I can't say that I was ever starving. I had my first fill at 3 weeks - yes it was only a tiny 1 but every little bit helps.Again with the mushy stage I was allowed to eat enough to satisfy my hunger. The focus post surgery is about healing more than weight loss. Remember that and you will do fine. It does make a difference having the band. It may be mental, I'm not sure but I know that I have never been able to stick to a liquid diet previously. Knowing that I was getting a band and that each of the food stages including the preop(which is the worst) were finite made it far easier. You know that none of these stages are forever. You can see the end and you know that you have a tool that is going to help enormously.

    Newbie Bandit...trying To "adjust"

I was hungry, I think I was mentally hungry . I didn't have a pre-op diet as I was still training for my 1/2 marathon and took advantage of eating all the stuff I new I wouldn't be able to eat afterwards. As for the "schmooshies" that is the stuff I'm allow to have as long as it is blended. Greek yogurt, cream of wheat, chicken noodle soup in a blender, etc. I guess I'm on that from week 2-3. Definitely a whole new adjustment and trying to keep myself busy. I am glad I have a forum to speak as my husband tries to understand but doesn't and I haven't told anyone of my friends or family. Good luck on your journey and let me know how you are doing.

    I...cheated.

For every doctor there seems to be a different diet plan. It is almost like they draw the diet plan from a hat and say, "here you go." I had to drink Water for 24 hours after surgery and nothing else. Then I got the Jello, broth, Protein delight (Yuck) for 4 days. Then I get to add pudding, yogurt, milk, and strained cream Soup for 10 days. I have 4 days left. Then I get to go to the mushies for 14 days before I move to solids for two weeks and then I get my first fill. All my portions have been regulated...1/4 here...1/2 here. Has anyone else had their portions regulated or is it up to you?

    Newbie from Minnesota

I was banded on June 20th...I am also from Minnesota..Banded at MeritCare Fargo, ND. My Dr. had me do the 2 weeks liquid diet prior to surgery and then also 2 weeks after surgery. I am now just finishing up a week of pureed diet...4 protein shakes during the day..4 oz. with 4 oz. of pureed unsweetened fruit, 4 oz. of low fat no sugar yogurt and then 1 tray of pureed food from the hospital and this is my current daily food intake. Next I move to soft foods.....funny how all Doctors have different plans. You will have to keep me updated on how you are doing. As far as feelling....I feel great and did right after surgery also. Good luck to you...

I could sleep on my left side about 2 days ago, my right is still a wee tender, but I'm off the meds....and seemed to slide from pain to hurt/uncomfortable today. I turned a corner! I have a class this week to talk about stage 3/4 foods next. Pureed foods, here I come! By the way, the multi-vitamins...blech/taste wise, but I coat my tongue in yogurt first to dull the taste. It's fine. They'll help keep me healthy, so I'll deal until I use these up and try a different flavor.

    Post-Op Diet Progression

It really depends on the Dr. I was on clears for 2 days post op, then on soft foods like yogurt, cottage cheese, applesauce and the like for 4 more days. On day 7 I was allowed to add in deli chicken or turkey, canned chicken, any seafood, soft cooked veggies, canned fruits, Babybel cheese, oatmeal, etc... about the only restriction I have is to stay away from red meat, pasta, rice, and potatoes until 2 months. When I had my 1 week meeting with the Dr. he just said to progress my diet as I felt comfortable but at 2 months everything would be completely healed and I could eat just about anything.
  9. I was holding off grocery shopping for my post-op diet until I saw my NUT...I am planning on doing that shopping this weekend...it's about time, since my surgery is Monday I have been taking notes from the message boards for several weeks now, and I am merging those notes with the packet my NUT gave me Wednesday...I could use a little advice and guidance please My post-op prescribed program is Clear liquids for the first two days...that includes a clear Liquid Protein drink--60 to 70 grams of protein each day...the brand my NUT recommended is New whey liquid...they come in 3.8 oz liquid vials, and each vial contains 42g protein...that means I would drink (sip) 1.5 to 2 vials each of the two days...she is advising I just sip about a third of each vial in a "sitting," which means it would take six sittings throughout the day to get it all in...plus of course the rest of my fluids...I am tempted just to buy the 4 vials of what she recommended--it's only 4 two days post-op, and I think I could drink them very cold and tolerate them for just 2 days...any feedback on this? I am more concerned about shopping for the next 10 to 12 days when I will be on a "full liquid" diet...the NUT says that the New Whey Liquid used during the first two days aren't sufficient nutritionally for this full liquid phase...she gave me a list of suggested brands with her personal recommendations highlighted...here are the highlighted options (in this phase I need 70-75g protein daily): --EAS Myoplex Original ready to drink; 17oz has 42g protein --Oh Yeah! Nutritional shake from GNC in powder or ready to drink; 32g protein in 14 oz drink --Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein from GNC in homemade vanilla ice cream flavor; 23g protein/scoop of powder --Pure Protein Shake from Walmart or GNC; comes in chocolate and vanilla with 35g protein in 11 oz drink --Unjury Whey Protein Powder (comes unflavored; also in a chicken Soup flavor) each scoop has 20g of protein From my notes from the message boards, I have these recommendations: --Syntrax nectar shakes --Matrix (mint cookie flavor) --Premier Protein (choc and vanilla) ready to drink has 30g protein per bottle --Isopure fruit flavored (orange, grape) --EAS dark chocolate with PB powder My NUT says during the full liquid phase, I can mix the protein powder with low-fat milk products if I desire; also I can have cream Soups (like cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, cream of celery) and I can add unflavored protein powder to the soups my other two options on full liquid are low-fat cottage cheese (which I don't like now) and light yogurt (not sure what "light" means here) I must complete my shopping on Sunday--any advice, feedback, guidance from those who have "been there" will be appreciated...at this time I am not even planning for the soft food stage, since I won't be there until after my follow-up NUT visit two-weeks post-op

    Waffle recipe

Hello! I thought I’d drop in and share a waffle recipe that I really like. 1/4 cup oats (I use quick oats, but rolled work as well) 1/4 cup vanilla Greek yogurt 1/2 small banana 1 large egg 1 scoop vanilla protein powder 1/4 tsp baking powder splash of vanilla blend all the ingredients together until smooth, then you can make it in a waffle iron or make pancakes with it. This does make about 3 waffles, so you can scale down the recipe or save some for later ☺️ You can also omit the yogurt, I’ve made it without the yogurt plenty of times. You can also substitute the banana with applesauce or pumpkin purée.
  11. Hey all, Well i'm on day 8 of 14 for my pre-op diet (about 700 calories a day) before my surgery next Friday May 27th with Dr. Keith Kim in Celebration. It really hasnt been that hard (I had already cut myself to 1300 calories and working out almost daily about 1.5 months ago), a few bouts with low energy and of course just being sick of Protein shakes and smelling and seeing everyone else's food has been a challenge! I had to go to a luncheon on Wednesday and BOY did everything look and smell good. I wont name the foods b/c its bad enough I had to endure it, no need to drag you all along with me Everyone kinda looked at me weird but noone asked and if they had, I was planning on saying I had a late lunch appt right after so as not to have to divulge personal info. Not sure who all is on a pre-op diet but here is mine: 7:30am - Protein shake with 8 oz of fat free-milk (Protein powder is the Vitamin Shoppe Brand, 100 Cal, 24g Protein, 0g fat, <1g Carb) 10:30am - 8oz Water with benefiber mixed in 12:30pm - Protein Shake with 8 oz of water, no sugar added vanilla yogurt (separate, not mixed with the shake), 8 oz water with benefiber mixed in 2:30pm - 1cup raw carrots (can be 1 cup of any raw veggie, but carrots are crunchy so it takes longer to chew and helps with the texture-withdrawal i'm having from the rest of the diet) 5:30pm - Protein Shake with 8 oz of water, 8 oz water with benefiber mixed in 7:30pm - Protein Shake with 8 oz of fat free-milk So that means that now, on day 8, as of 12:36pm, i have consumed a whopping 30 shakes!!! Only 24 to go!! Overall, like i said, its not that bad but is kind of annoying...its working though, have lost about 10lbs since starting it and am getting really psyched about the surgery! Anyone else doing a similar diet? Thanks!
  12. Today I started phase 2 of my diet. Overly full on greek yogurt and mashed potatoes. How do you get your protein? I was so excited that I was able to eat that I think I over did it. I'm suppose to wait 1 hour before drinking too. At this rate ill be eating until midnight to get 60 grams of protein in. Did u find it easier to drink your protein in shakes versus food at this stage? I'm a little over 2 weeks now.
  13. I'm two weeks too and I can totally relate. I can now get the Protein in by starting the day with decaf coffee with 1/2 scoop unjury vanilla Protein powder. One scoop is 20g protein but I prefer taste with half scoop. I drink protein shakes or have Greek yogurt almost every day. Sometimes if really having desire for something with weight to it, will add full scoop of Unjury cheese sauce powder to grits or mashed potatoes but liken others have said, I try to avoid carby stuff. One scoop of the cheese sauce is 20g. I also add the fruit punch flavored protein shots to sugar-free fruit punch/crystal light/watered down Gatorade. Protein shot is 25g. It's the only way I can tolerate protein shots. The rest that I tried I found to be pretty yucky. We can do this! Some days I feel like I have worked so hard to get the protein in and then realize I did it but only ate 200-300 cal. Feels like a lot of work but totally worth it! Hang in there...

  15. I was sleeved Monday (22nd). I'm on full liquids as well. I don't have any problem getting my thinner, watery liquids in but do have some difficultly with the denser liquids, Protein shakes, yogurt, malto meal Cereal etc. I can only handle 1-2 oz of those at a time. More than that and I feel like I have a bubble in my chest. I never feel "full" I just seem to be in a constant state of not being hungry. With that being said, 4 oz per hour is the minimum. My dr said 2 oz should be Water or water substitute like crystal light and the other 2 oz full liquids. It's ok to have more liquids than that, just slow it down and you'll be fine.
  16. Does anyone else have this restriction during full liquid stage? It says I can have sugar free or plain yogurt with

    Need healthy chili recipe

Sautee 1 cup chopped onion in 1-2 T oil. Let them soften. Add finely diced carrots and celery if you like (I don't) and cook until softened. Sometimes I'll add sliced mushrooms here. Add 3 or more minced cloves garlic and cook 30 second to one minute Add 1lb ground turkey (or chicken or beef), stirring until no longer pink Add 2-3 T chili seasoning (I like Penzey's Chili 9000) and 1tsp or more cumin, plus 1-2 T unsweetened cocoa powder, and 1 tsp cinnamon and stir to coat. 1 T of brown sugar is a nice addition but not necessary Add 1 28 oz can of crushed or diced tomatoes Add 1 1/2 to 2 cups of broth Add 1 15 oz can of beans, rinsed (kidney or black beans are both great) I like to add about a cup of frozen corn and a bag of cauliflower rice right from the freezer at this stage, but you can add a lot of different frozen veggies. I love the sweetness of the corn, and the texture. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, adjusting seasonings and cook for at least 30 minutes, but it gets better after an hour or so. Serve with plain Greek yogurt and shredded cheese (and onions if you like).

    Panara Turkey chili is back.

They have quite a few healthier options. I alternate between here and Chick-fil-A when I’m in need of something quick. Another tip for young parents ls that chick fila you can get a kids meal too, but with grilled nuggets and fresh fruit. Also for a really special treat you can substitute frozen yogurt in place of the toy but only if your headed straight home to put in freezer cause you probably won’t be able to eat it after the other food. many people love their diet lemonade as well.

    Looking for Easy Protein Snacks

I keep my pantry and fridge full of grab and go options! Any low sugar Greek yogurt (I like siggis, two good, oikos triple zero), two good smoothies, bel gioso individual cheeses, cottage cheese cups, individual nut packs, whisps, chomps, hilo chips, egg bites, protein one bars. I always keep a pack of protein shakes in my trunk for emergencies!
  21. I like getting a high protein nonfat Greek yogurt (I use fage nonfat), putting in some organic unsweetened cocoa (I use Cocoavia cardio health), and mixing in sugar free maple syrup (I use Maple Grove farms no sugar syrup) to sweeten it. Tastes so good. I wish I knew about this recipe when I was in the puree stage but I just recently found it somewhere on the net. I don't even remember where.

    Binge eating-14 months after surgery

It is compulsive eating;I eat to the point I feel sick.I can throw up(not intentionally)and eat again an hour later.I also can experience the dumping syndrom(not pleasent thing) and eat again later. But the worst happens in the morning:my stomach hurts,I feel nauseated,I can not even look on food, and I emotionally upset.I mean,it is disease, and I have to learn how to control it.I will follow my therapist suggestions(she actually specialized on eating disorders and she used to have one which she successfully overcame). This nutritionist is an idiot!!Honestly,if I up my calories and keep exercising,I will still lose weight(slower though).I am 5'6 and I weigh 141-144(it fluctuates),I am normal not overweight,so if I keep this weight I am actually OK with it.I just want to stop hurting myself. Sometimes I read other people posts and they keep eating 1000 cal even after 1 year after surgery(yogurt in the morning, shake in tbe afternoon, and etc),and I start to feel guilty.I mean, how? But we all have different bodies and issues,so I should stop compare myself with others.Thank you again for all your suggestions and support! Sent from my LGMP260 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Worried about hunger/fullness

This has been how my diet has gone the past couple days. I bought a few cans of hormel turkey chili with Beans and Goya refried black beans. I blend each with a little Water and hot sauce into a nice smooth liquid. I then divide each can into 4 small containers... so I have 4 servings of chili and 4 of black beans. I found each makes around 1/3 of a cup (not the 1/2 cup I thought I was eating per the label.) I can eat one of those servings no problem without feeling full. Yesterday my day went like this: breakfast: 2 tablespoons of hummus sipped a premier Protein rtd chocolate shake over the course of the am lunch: serving of pureed black beans w a small sprinkle reduced fat cheese (1 tblspoon)dinner: serving of pureed turkey chili w a small sprinkle reduced fat cheese (1 tblspoon)snack: half of a oikos triple zero greek yogurt a tablespoon or 2 of hummus Had no issues with any of these foods... did not feel overly full after any of it. Got in 60+ grams of protein and 600 or so calories which is what my Dr wants. Also took my Vitamins and had no issues swallowing those, including the large BA multi-Vitamin with Iron.

    May 2022 surgery?

For me it has a very chemical after taste that is off-putting, but it's such a good source of protein in a small quantity that I am still using it, but as a smoothy base with a little Fairlife vanilla protein shake and plain greek yogurt. Since today I start soft foods, I am going to add a little banana. MUCH tastier this way!
