What's been your lightbulb moment?
SassyTink replied to Indigo1991's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My light bulb moment happened this week. I had my surgery on November 22 and have done pretty well. I have stayed the course and have not swayed from my list of acceptable Protein options prior to this mini vacation. This week I went to San Francisco to care for my aged father. When I arrived in SF I went to the market immediately and bought my Dannon light and fit yogurt, cottage cheese, Light Baby Bel cheese and turkey slices before I even went to my Dad's. I wanted to make sure I continue to make good choices when it came to food. Seven days later....... I am home and food wasn't an issue. For the first time in decades I took control of my eating habits when visiting the family in San Francisco. I said NO to a cannoli, NO to a Joe's hamburger, NO to a Tostada, NO to a crepe, etc.......my response was, "Can I meet you afterwards?" I always carried a Baby Bel Cheese in my purse and always felt satisfied. I came home 4 pounds lighter and the feeling........I GOT THIS! -
Scared to eat!
LindafromFlorida replied to Bigmommatojacob's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you are eating Bigmomma. I am 7 months out and have not tried a pork chop. I did not try salad until 3 months out, I was afraid to try, but once I did I am eating salad every day. You might want to try less dense food, such as refried beans, cottage cheese, yogurt (I added protein powder), ground turkey, turkey meatballs, and things that are softer. Good luck! -
June sleevers, check-in!
LovetoDive replied to cutiecake's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Erica! I was sleeved 6/2 and I can still only take 3 - 4 bites. What's so hard for me is every one on this site has a different progression of food. What has been wonderful for me is Greek yogurt & Tilapia. Pasta goes down well if I only have 3 bites. Also, a suggestion from a 2 yr vet of the sleeve said to set an alarm. 7 - breakfast, 10 - shake, 12:30 - lunch, 3 - shake, and 6:30 dinner. I still don't hit all of that every day, but it has helped with "normalcy". OH - AND CONGRATULATIONS ON 20 LBS!!! That's fantastic! -

Looking for January 2017 sleevers
kar12345 replied to Destiny Vavrosky's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! Sleeved 1/12/17. Finishing first week purée phase, 2 more to go. So far yogurt, made crockpot beef stew (just meat, onions and carrots), tried ricotta bake recipe, Protein pudding, and Panera turkey chili (a cup as take out, purée'd very nice - split into two meals). Not huge amounts, but tolerating well so far. Still 2 - 3 Protein drinks. Struggle to get enough water - it's a journey! [emoji2] -
I found that canned chicken or tuna goes down MUCH easier than a filet. And you still get your protein. There's also smoothies made with fruit, FF plain yogurt, sweetner (I prefer stevia), and protein powder. I'm sure other's will chime in with ideas

Feeling No restriciton and FUSTRATED!
Chrisann replied to zippyz's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I have discovered if I don't have anything to eat before 11:00am, I am hungry all day. I am eating less than I used to eat, but eating more than I should. LIke last night, 10oz chili with cheese, and 2 cups green Beans, steamed. I made the chili from scratch. So this morning, I had greek yogurt, with 14g Protein, took 30 minutes to eat 8oz cup. So we shall see how the day progresses. I am scheduled for a doctors appt next Friday, so maybe I need a little more in my band. I currently have 4cc's in a 10cc band. -
I saw (albeit in a nectar ad...) the suggestion to mix: Nectar Lemon Tea w/Crystal Light Peach Tea. Supposedly is delish..........but I haven't tried it. Is there some reason no-one is suggesting smoothies: frozen fruits, plain lo cal yogurt, unsweetened apple juice, whey powder -- run thru the blender for an icy drink. My big problem: makes too much.

I'm exactly the same as you, the odd food seems to go down slower and feels stuck but it passes quickly. For Breakfast I've been having yogurt with a couple tablespoons of raisin bran and 3 diced up strawberries, lunch 4 triscuits with low fat cheese, salsa and 6 cherries, supper grilled chicken and vegies. I'm sticking to their instructions to have 3 1/2-1c meals but they are not keeping me full till the next meal. Also I'm only hitting about 750 calories a day doing this? Do you think its okay to add a 4th meal just to get up to 1000 calories??? I might end up going to Thunder Bay for my first fill but its a 3 hr drive each way. SWLC sent my physician a video, learning package and all the equipment he`ll need to do my fills. Honestly he is a brilliant man! Do you know if there is anyone in Sault Ste. Marie, I`m going that way for holidays in just over a week.

I had a slipped band and a prolapse myself. It was pretty awful -- reflux every night. It hurt to eat or drink anything but ice cream (cold so it numbed me- not sharp, like yogurt). Even drinking Water hurt. They tried removing all the fill and that did not work. I had lots of barium swallows. Finally, I had revision surgery. That was a year and a half ago and I have been afraid to get another fill. That's why I am here now -- as a step toward getting the courage to try again. I need to see if I can get the band to work for me without another prolapse -- otherwise, I need to consider other surgery. I am working toward weight loss after prolapse -- I have gained what I lost back. Mocca

One week post op and no weight loss
Frenchie1977 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am exactly one week post op, I started losing about a pound a day then I starting gaining a pound a day and now I am right back to my pre-surgery weight. I'm so frustrated. I have no problems getting in all my liquids and protein, I track my calories and gett anywhere from 600- 900 calories a day. I'm on full liquids, I have not cheated, but I also have no restriction, I can easily finish the whole container of yogurt when I eat. Any advice -
calling all December 19th sleevers

My daily menu is nothing exciting. I usually have a Protein Shake and a half, and then something of the Soup variety for dinner. I've been digging light creamy Soups, because they have a lot of flavor. I don't think I've been doing 64 g and 64 ounces, but I've been doing about 50. That's what my doctor suggested. I have my 10 day postop tomorrow, and I'm probably going to be cleared for soft foods. I can't wait! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App When you have soup how much do you usually have? Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App I can drink 8oz of broth now. Been primarily living on premier Protein shakes, broth with protein added, G2 drink, crystal light. I've had yogurt once, still not something I actually like, and I've had cottage cheese and refried Beans with plain greek yogurt mixed in. On christmas I did have two spoons of mashed potatoes drenched in turkey juice and a shred of turkey that I chewed to death. I also have chewed some string cheese into mush too. I know these things aren't on my current list, but I'm careful to not swallow anything until it's mush. My doctor said I could have a scrambled egg with cheese on day 10! whoohoo.. and if that goes well I could also try some fish. She seems to be less strict on the stages than I see in other programs. -
Apple and almonds? That's actually pretty tough on your stomach. I wasn't allowed apples or nuts until almost 3 months post-op. I had sleeve though, not bypass, and I know some of the guidelines are different. How do you do with Greek yogurt? Cottage cheese? Scrambled eggs? Were you throwing up in your puree stage or just once you moved onto solid foods?
-
that is all I ate, is cottage cheese and yogurt, they make me gag. Think about it, since October I have been eating Soup, cottage cheese, rigotta cheese. After 6 weeks they want you to introduce food. My surgeon is away this week, I am sure he will contact me next week. Can not eat scrambled egg, make me throw up. I was able to eat the puree stage just regular food makes me sick

If I am struggling to get in my protein, I have a protein pudding/ yogurt. They really make my poop like concrete. One of these and my internal system is like a traffic jam. I am not sure if its the artificial sugar or the protein in them that causes this

How did you stock your fridge/pantry with for post op?
stoongal replied to tennessee1031's topic in Food and Nutrition
I got a 6 pk of Isopure Protein drink and have bought them at least 3 more times, drink them even now..I didn't use any of my pkgs of SF Jello, but did stock up on homemade chicken broth - ate the chicken from it later as I chopped the meat up fine and added them to the diet as i progressed. Yogurt and fatfree cottage cheese worked well for me, poached eggs after a couple of weeks, and, like Tiffy, loved the babybel lowfat cheeses (could nibble them to mush slowly early on) I bought way too much protein powders, and have most of them still sitting here 3 months later, so go slow on those, wait til afterwards. Canned broths or soups you can strain out the solids for week 2 are great. Crystal lite - banana strawberry orange is my fav, as we all seem not to enjoy plain Water for quite a while, but do dilute well as they will be too sweet at first. Grape juice and unsweetened applesauce are good at first too! Hope this list is a help! -

Night Time Snacker
Sojourner replied to MrsFraga2016's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can also relate to having this habit that I needed to break if I wanted to be successful with losing weight. A few ideas which helped me, as others have suggested, make getting that snack more difficult. Be on a different floor of the house from the food. If you take a spoon of Peanut Butter, put the spoon in the dishwasher so you have additional steps to go through before you have your snack. It gives you an opportunity to rethink if you really want that snack. Find something ELSE to do with your hands while watching tv. I don't watch it much, but when I do I usually am working on a counted cross stitch project. It takes my mind off of wanting a snack. You are correct if you believe that much snacking happens from being bored. Only snack on healthy food, and try to make certain that your snack contains Protein. It will hold your hunger at bay for longer and you add protein grams to your daily intake. Get all of your desired Snacks out of your house. That way, not only would getting the snack involve going downstairs, you would also need to go to the store. Learn how to separate authentic hunger from "head hunger". I usually will drink some Water, get busy with a project to distract me. If in 30 minutes my feelings of hunger are still present then I know I need to eat something. Then I choose wisely, like a teaspoon of peanut butter. Place a limit on yourself as to how many snacks you are allowed per day. When you reach your liit, you are done. Period. I will allow myself 2 snacks a day. One in the afternoon between lunch and dinner(usually plain low fat cottage cheese), and my evening snack,is usually Greek yogurt with PB2 in it or 1-2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Under no circumstances should you ever bring the entire bag or container to where you are sitting, because then you cannot be mindful of the portion you are eating, and likely will eat way more than you should. Know what your trigger foods are, and avoid them. Some people cannot control their portion of peanut butter as an example. Avoid that as a snack if you are uncertain if you can place a limit on yourself and adhere to it. I hope some of this helps. It't really all about changing your relationship with food, and learning to eat to live rather than living to eat. Or finding solace and comfort in food. If you are turning to food as a coping mechanism to manage stress, opt for some exercise instead. Exercise is a great stress reducer, it creates endorphins and you burn extra calories. It's really a win-win. Best wishes... -
6dpo I was drinking Protein shakes, and eating Popsicles, Jell-O, Yogurt, and Cream of Wheat. Sent from my iPhone using VST

Don't compare. Everyone loses at their own rates. However what are you eating that prevents you from increasing your Protein? That should be your number one goal, especially if you are working out. You could add some plain greek yogurt to your protein shake to up the protein. (I am partial to FAGE 0%). Many factor go into determining who will have lose skin; age, race, genetic, etc.... You can try and prevent it by keeping skin moisturized, keeping your body hydrated and lifting weights which may help replace the fat with muscle, but there are no guarantees. I also like adding a bit of chopped spinach (fresh or frozen) to my Protein drinks. It add Vitamins and nutrients like Iron, and it's good for the bowels. As for calorie guidelines, you should call and ask your nutritionist. In fact you might want to call them and brainstorm about ways to increase your protein intake.
