I researched it a little and was surprised to find out that the great majority of overweight people are deficient in vitamin D. The fat cells actually absorb the vitamin, preventing the body using it and processing it. My doctor actually gave me a prescription for a once a week pill to take - or said I could take an otc daily dose of vitamin D. I opted for the once a week - which was covered by my prescription plan. My surgery is in 8 days, and they did check my levels again last week, but honestly, I took the pill a few times and never really stuck to taking it every week as recommended. I was really close, though. They told me they like you at 130, and I was at 128. (Probably b/c I hate sunscreen!) So I didn't really feel the urgency of importance. If I was below 100, maybe I'd have been more concerned. But kind of felt like, really? let me sit outside for 10 minutes and take the test again. hahaha! Honestly, though, I'm not really sure of the benefits of it. So previous answer from NoEscape21 was enlightening! Thanks!!

Post-Op Care/assistance From Family...
MyGastricSleeveLife replied to MrzSongbird's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take my own 2 kids and some neighbor kids to school & home. I wasn't supposed to drive as long as I was on the narcotic pain medicine & I know some doctors say to not drive for at least a week after surgery. It just depends on the doctor. I took the pain meds for 2 days after surgery during the day, but then I only did at night. I had surgery on a Monday. My husband worked from home during that week so he could take the kids to and from school, so I didn't do much that week. The Monday after surgery, when my husband went back to work & I did the driving around again was really tiring because of surgery & because I hadn't done it in a week. I would honestly see if there is any way your husband could get time off or your extended family could help or friends could help out for the first week or two. Everyone's recovery is different, but the first week is definitely the hardest & especially since you have one that isn't in school yet you might need extra help. It would be hard to be with the little one all day by yourself right after surgery! -
Three days in and I am a bit behind but further than I thought I would be. I exceeded my word goal on day 1, didn't write at all on day 2, and got close to my daily goal on day 3. I will have to put on a big push tomorrow to catch up or even get ahead a little bit.

Scared And Excited
Liberated Sleeve replied to medictazman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I too was scared that I would be the one to have the leaks or abscess or whatever complication was available. However, I knew I had to do this for my health and to take back control of my life. I had yo-yo'd for years. I researched my surgeons and was confident I had chose one that would do his best to make sure I was a success under his care. He answered every question I had no matter how stupid it may have sounded to him. My surgery was a success, no complications, dropped 5 medications, 32lbs since surgery date, 8 weeks out and happy as a lark! liquid diet is doable and if you approach as the first step to taking back control of you then you can't fail!! God bless you! -
A Ball Of Emotions- 3 Days Until Surgery Day!
Back~To~Amy replied to Prissy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi there and welcome to VST. You've found a wonderful place for support. I had surgery 8 weeks & 4 days ago and can't be happier. I started at 304 and am now down 46 pounds. Prior to surgery, my whole body hurt all the time and I had zero energy. I'm still way overweight but it is amazing what losing 46 pounds has done for me. I only have aches and pains occasionally and they aren't near as bad. My energy level and overall stamina is way up too. I think you've made a great decision to be sleeved and you will feel amazing once you heal from the surgery. I had lots of postop pain issues but others had no issues at all. It's hard to say what your experience will be. However, even with all the pain I would go through it again in a heartbeat! If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. Good luck to you in your journey! -
Ahhh Sooo Nervous
Sarahemma94 replied to irishgirl27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My op date is the 12th of August. I'm Irish too, I live up north, and I smoke too lol. I'm on my pre op diet and yes it is SO flipping hard and I had to stop smoking, but all I can tell you is the thing that keeps me going is the thought of me not being fat anymore! I'm just so excited to loose weight and I would do anything to loose it, so of I have to stop smoking for a few weeks and diet then il do it to try be healthier. Il probably smoke again after my op though lol. But just think of how good your going to look. And remember how dangerous it is for you if you don't quit smoking! Just try have one smoke a week but 2 weeks before your op you need to seriously not have any. Best of luck! Btw who are you getting your surgery with? -
Do you not have insurance because you can't get coverage? If so, I would encourage you to look into PCIP. It's the pre-existing health insurance that was put in place in 2010. I was without insurance for ten years since I work for a small company that didn't offer a plan. After a gallbladder attack, I tried to secure individual insurance but was denied because of my weight. You can get this insurance if you live in a participating state, have a pre-existing health condition or have been turned down for insurance and have been without coverage for at least six months. It's age rated. I'm 51 and pay $306 a month. You seem much younger so your premium will reflect that. The plan I chose has a $2,000 deductible and a $4,000 out of pocket maximum and yes, it covers the sleeve. I had my gallbladder removed in February so that and a couple of other procedures met my deductible. I have been able to get my septum corrected and am scheduled to be sleeved in three weeks, all at no additional cost. They do require a six month monitored diet and either a BMI of 40+ or 35 with two co-morbidities. Good luck!

My final preop weigh in was 282. When I went in for my first fill (about 4-6 weeks out) I was like 272. I was exercising preop (1 hr of cardio 7 days a week) so I did return to the gym day 4. -

Hey all...my surgery is August 13th. It's possible I may need to fly out of state for a week-long business trip 2- 2 1/2 weeks post-op. The business trip doesn't involve any physical work or anything, but I'm nervous about leaving town so soon after surgery. I'm worried about what stage I'll be at in my diet (pureed food or mushies I'd imagine?) and how I'll work around that while out of town, and also about being uncomfortable on the flight. What do you guys think? I have no idea how I'll be feeling or the kind of energy I'll have at that stage. I have to make a decision soon so travel arrangements can be made. Do you think it's reasonable to make a trip like this so soon after surgery?

Had post Lap Band op appointment today
Mason33 replied to Tabby Ann's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Tabby. I went for my post op appt. too yesterday and their scale said that I had only lost 15lbs. where as my scale is saying 19lbs. I weighed myself on it just prior to going to surgery last week. I know it's only 4lbs. difference, but hey, every pound counts, LOL. I too was having more pain at my port site yesterday than I have had yet. I was close to taking some lortab it was so bad. But the nurse said that I probably overdid it the night before and I had slept on my right side too. I am looking forward to this mushy/soft food stage. Already had scrambled eggs for breakfast and had no problem. I also bought some little tubs of instant mashed potatoes made by Idahoan its around 160 calories for the whole container but what I thought would be nice about it is that I can take it with me, add some water and nuke it and still stay on this diet. I also found at Wal-Mart these soups made by Marketside. They are located in the refrigerator part of the deli shelves (I was at the one in Bridgewater Falls) anyways, they have this chicken tortilla soup that is already pureed into a broth mixture that is wonderful. It's 170 calories but it was so nice to have it already made. I was at a friends house for dinner and I brought that with me and popped it in the microwave. It was very conveinent. I also put a dollop of fat free sour cream in it because it was a little spicy and that cooled it down. They also had a loaded baked potato and a chicken and dumplings one but I haven't tried those yet. They were a few more calories, like around 210 I think. I'm all about conveinence and I am always on the go with two kids so if you find some things quick and easy, let me know:) I already had one steri strip fall off. I can't wait for all of them to be gone so I can scrub my belly, LOL. -

Ball's (Finally) Rolling - Band To Sleeve Conversion
iwannabslim replied to Daisalana's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have wondered about the "limit" thing. I have a friend that currently has lapband. She was trying for revision through her new insurance. She found out that they have a "1 per lifetime" limit on bariatric surgery even though THEY didn't have anything to do with the original surgery. It would seem to me that it would be cheaper on the insurance company to go ahead and cover the surgery rather than paying for the multitude of specialists that she would have to see to deal with the affects of obesity on her body. As for recovery, it is VERY similar to getting the band. I am on lifting restrictions for 4 weeks. I work at a pretty physical job so I am actually off work on short term disability for the entire time. I have heard of people going back to work soon after surgery (like less than a week). The hardest part, to me, is getting my fluids in. It is very easy to get dehydrated post op. I struggle to get in 5 cups of Water a day. I working on it, but it can be tough. I'm in contact with a few revisioners. They still VERY happy with their decision to revise. They inspire me daily. I will admit that it was their sucess that made me finally talk to my doctor about revising. -
Business Trip 2 Weeks Post-Op
Texarkolina replied to Half~of~Bri's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I haven't been sleeved yet, but I am in the same situation of needing to travel for work pretty soon after surgery. My surgeon said I should not get on a plane for 6 weeks if at all possible. Driving is ok but only if I stop every hour. You may want to ask your surgeon's office and see what they advise. -
If you quite you are not necessarily giving up your career long term. But you could give yourself the time to focus purely on you and the journey you have to undertake. I'm seriously thinking of deferring a year of my studies next year for precisely that reason - all the running round and focusing on anyone and anything but me has led me to gain an awful lot of weight in the last year or two. You could have time for the gym four or five times a week, time to walk daily, time to plan and shop for healthy meals - all things I know I find extraordinarily hard now - and you could focus on becoming physically more healthy and hopefully mentally much stronger over the next 12 months.

LouLou, I would agree with what everyone is saying especially having your meds adjusted (I hope you are on anti depression medication) in order to deal with these situations. I would also mention that since you were banded on Aug. 1st some of the depression might be related to the anesthesia you had from the surgery. I know at 4 weeks I was having a hard time and I've heard it mentioned before that alot of people kinda have a depression come over them about a month after surgery. Chris

Hi guys, I am having a hard week and I'm hoping you dont mind If I have a bit of a rant/vent about work stuff. I posted a few weeks ago about trouble with a co-worker, well things got better and now worse again.. But let me give you a little history first... I haven't worked for 5 years because of severe depression (also one of the reasons I am now so over-weight) and going back to work for my was a HUGE thing. I was finally feeling like I wanted to get back into 'life' and the world, and take back some of my independence. But it has all fallen apart. I am working hard and I am proud Of what I am acheiving, and I love the actual work but the environment and management suck!!! The boss is lazy and sexist and I am forever apologising to clients for him. He is intimidating and bad-tempered and sulks. He lies and makes dodgy deals and is forever having a smoke break/lunch or closing early. The co-worker who so upset me last time is horrible to work with too, he's negative and whiney and keeps saying inappropriate things to the customers, and trying to get me help him do his work when I am swamped with my own stuff. Customers and other staff members have made complaints about the boss to him and to others (higher up) about him and still nothing is done. Lately I have started falling back into old habits - thinking very negatively, wanting to sleep all the time and not wanting to do anything, and feeling on the verge of tears constantly, not to mention eating as much junk as I can cram into my cake-hole. I love the sense of independence I get from working and earning my own money. but I dont actually have to work, hubby earns enough for me to stay at home if I want to. But I dont want to be a failure again. If I quit and leave this job I will feel as though I have 'screwed up' again, but I dont know if my mental health can take much more of this. There is no other company in my town that employs 'optical dispensers', so if I give up this job I give up my career. My hubby thinks I should write a 'strongly worded letter' to the HR department - including details of the boss' behaviours but I dont know if I can deal with the fall-out. He is away for 2 weeks now but I know I will spend the next 2 weeks cleaning up his messes and trying (in vain) to placate angry customers who cant understand why their glasses that they 'ordered' 2 weeks ago have in fact not been ordered. I am really feeling stressed and strung out I dont know what to do. Thanks for listening.

Weight Management (Weight Loss/gain)
DaniG replied to sharoncarrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gained 6 lbs on my final weigh in and my insurance company ok'ed my surgery. They know why we need the surgery. I kinda went crazy and ate everything I wanted bc I knew I wouldn't be able to eat my faves again. Now I'm 2 weeks out and 21 lbs lighter. So happy. Good luck to you on your journey. -
Hey guys! I haven't been on here in forever, but I'm just trying to see if anyone has had a pregnancy post op gastric sleeve, what your experience was, how much did you gain? Or, if you are pregnant, how are you currently feeling and how has your pregnancy been so far? I'm 13.5 weeks. This will be my third baby, first since having the sleeve done. I'm 15 months post op, and it was a surprise. I was actually on the mirena IUD and got pregnant.. oops.. but things happen. So far I have lost 4 lbs. I'm on prenatals, plus b12. I'm also on antibiotics my entire pregnancy because I've had two UTIs since getting pregnant and one kidney infection, not sure why... I also start mekena shots in a few weeks. (My daughter was preemie.) I was just wondering how everyone's pregnancies went post op, how was it different from previous if you had babies before the sleeve. Tired Of Looking At Myself.
Raven21 replied to NDN_RN's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get it. I'm still looking at 3 months of jumping through insurance hoops. Just keep thinking of the goal. Imagine yourself next summer! Every time I see someone I haven't seen in a while I wonder what I'll look like the next time they see me! 4 weeks is nothing compared to the amount of time you've probably spent being miserable bc of your weight. Concentrate on why you are doing this! Can't wait to hear your success stories in a month or two! Hang in there! -
Hello everyone. Im a newbie here, just starting my weight-loss journey. I attened my first seminar last week, and heard back from the office today about my benefits. According to my insurance, I must do a 6 month diet( as most of you know), and than we can do the surgery. Luckily for me, I did 2 months of a program this year, so I only need for more months. Im not happy about waiting for 4 months, but It will give me a chance to really think through the surgery, along with getting in the best shape as possible. Looking for others who give any support or tips, or just need to talk. Thanks for Listening JR
