    What Should I ask??

Questions to ask during consultation: 2) Research the doctor. What kind of follow up care is provided? (ie: fills, unfills, endoscopies, fluroscopies, port revisions, removal, etc). Ask to speak to about 5 or 6 of his patients before you make a decision. Ask those people if they have any complaints or issues with their care before, during and after the procedure. How many of the procedures has he done? What types of complications can occur from this procedure and how frequently do they happen? (ie: perforations, etc) What types of complications has he personally ran into doing this procedure? What is his policy when a complication occurs during a procedure? (ie: does he discuss options with family or immediately convert to bypass or other WLS). Is he Inamed approved for the procedure? If not then who qualified him to perform the procedure and can you have literature to verify this? 3) Research the procedure. How is the procedure performed? Will you use the Pars Flaccida approach? What type of sutures do you use? Can I request glue and not staples? Will I have a catheter placed? If I am on my menses, can I wear a tampon? What will I need to have prepared when I get home in way of food items? What are the short term issues? What are the long term issues? How will I be able to take my pills? Will you write today for liquid pain meds? Do you want me to take antibiotics post-op? If so, will you write for Diflucan? 4) Follow up care. What is the schedule for fills? When can I get my first fill? How is the fill procedure performed? (ie: with or without fluroscopy) What is the cost for fills? (under fluro and not) How often will I need to be seen? Will I have access to a Nutritionist? How do you handle unfills? Is there a direct line in case of Emergencies? Does your doctor have email address? Should I continue to take Metformin? What Vitamins should I be taking? Will I need to crush my pills? If so then for how long? Are there any pills that cannot be crushed? If so then how will I be able to take them?

    Group projects

This is truly just a rant b/c I'm fuming about something. It's my catharsis. Please don't even read unless you're really bored. My graduate program unfortunately involves a lot of group projects. They're not my favorite, but I understand why they do them. So far, they've been tolerable experiences, and a few have been positive (was in a group of self-starters, we could agree on natural work divisions, etc.) This semester is a completely different story. I was put in a group with 3 other people. At first it seemed ok - up until it was too late to request a group change, anyway. We have a project due tomorrow. It's a very large project that required several additional documents, a lot of research, a nice presentation, etc. As of Friday, two of us had submitted work for the project - kind of. I had submitted several paragraphs to paste into a final presentation, and all of the attachments we needed except for one. One other person in the group had submitted a half-assed final project document (the skeleton -- still needed all the text/attachments/etc.) -- based on a template I built and submitted. It had a total of about 6 sentences in it. Of the two other people in the group, one had offered a lot of criticism on the work I had done, but had not offered up anything of her own. The fourth person has not contributed one single piece of anything. She has asked us for clarification on the assignment, and told this week she wouldn't have internet access for one day (that was on Wed). We haven't heard from her since. I'm working to maintain my GPA and this is my last required course so I'm being extra careful. So I took about 10 hours yesterday and built the entire document. Places where I didn't have the data, I just made something up as a placeholder, then highlighted it so it could easily be found when whomever owned that piece decided to get it done. I created about 3 powerpoints, 5 word documents, tons of tables & graphs, etc. I then told the peolpe in my group that since the template was hard to use, please don't make changes to the document directly. If you don't like the template, that's fine -- you're welcomed to redo it. But if you are ok with it, just printscreen or copy what you want to change into a basic word doc and indicate what you think should be changed. Do you think anyone did that? Nope. They made their suggestions right into the document, so not only did I have to line-y-line compare with the original to see what was different, I also had to spend about an hour reformatting everything. Then, they had a lot of criticism on some of my tables. I told them "These are just drafts I created so we would have something there, these will need to be refined for submission." I guess they can't read, because those disclaimers were completely ignored and they kinda jumped on me about how they want to see something more professional (umm... then freaking SUBMIT SOMETHING?!) One girl, while making changes, managed to delete 11 of the 14 pages in the document. When I reverted it back to a version that had all the pages, she became irate that I had "disregarded her feedback." Umm -- no, I just had to get back the content. I figured that was more important than your suggested revisions, which were poor quality and not accurate anyway. I've written the proffessor, emphasizing that I'm not a whiner or tattletale, but trying to elicit her help in getting these people motivated. This project, though it's large, is just a very small piece of an overall semester-long project and I can't solo that one. I did make it clear that the one person had contributed nothing. She hasn't yet responded to me. The rules for grading this are -- everyone shares 95% of the grade, with the last 5% coming from peer evaluations that the rest of the group does on you. That means that if our group gets 100% on the project, everyone is guaranteed a score of 95%. Including the one person who has done zero. And I've been pretty direct wtih them, telling them they need to quit deleting the content, quit messing up the template because it costs me more time, etc. Of course part of the peer evaluation is how well they liked working with you. And Ive butted heads with 2 of these people in prior classes, and two of them are buddy-buddy. If we get 100% and everyone has their 95%, it's within the realm of possiblities that the buddies could give each other good feedback, give me crappy feedback, and they'd walk away with a higher score than me even though I've essentially soloed the entire project, and have to submit it with the group's names. I hate it when dead weight gets free rides. This professor has been very reasonable about some things that have happened in other classes I've taken with her. Hopefully she will be able to do something in this case. If not, I'm one irritated student, and going to have a serious talk with my group about the amount of effort they expect from me toward the larger semester project. Fooking deadbeats.

    GERD

My surgeon would not do the sleeve for me because he said my GERD would get much worse. I had the gastric bypass revision from Lapband last July and the GERD is completely gone!

    GERD

I had revision lapband to bypass 12/17. I had horrible gerd before my bypass, but since the surgery I have not had one single episode. The bypass completely solved the problem!!
  6. I am curious to know how long did you have to wait after band removal before revising
  7. I haven't revised to anything yet, I just had the band (taken out) 3 weeks ago. I haven't gained any weight either and I'm being cautious about my eating. I was referring to anyone that may have had their band (taken out) and waited a certain amount of time before a revision to RNY. Thanks for the knowledge!
  8. As far as I understand a replacement would be if you had it completely removed and a new one put in. A revision is fixing things like slips. If you have your insurance book it should tell you right in there.

Anyone Use Dr. Huacuz In Tijuana?

i had my revision with Dr Garcia in Tijuana on September 10th. He is an amazingly skilled surgeon and his price is very reasonable. It is worth to check him out. Google alighterme or ready4achange for a coordinator.
  12. band worked and is still working for me and all my friends that had LB are still going strong, except for my sister in law. She got her band in Mex and had nothing but problems. She just revised to GB. I hate to be a debbie downer... but three weeks ago i had supper with her. We stopped at Taco Bell (yuck) but that's what was available at the time, anywho.... i had pintos and cheese and a scoop of ground beef... she had the new smothered burrito and ate the whole thing... I don't see this surgery lasting long either... Just saying. Three friends had the sleeve, one had it done 5 years ago and has gained about 50lbs back of the 100 she lost. One only lost about 50 of the 100 she said she needed to lose and the last friend just had it done in Feb and ended up in the hospital in March and had to have a stint put in due to complications. I know this is not related, but, four of my friends had the GB done. Two have gained all the weight back, one is on her way and the other is doing great.

    Lap band scar tissue?

You'll be fine, I had a slipped band and tons of inflammation, was a bit of a special case. If I'd just been a regular revision it would all been fine but I had the added drama of a prolapse stomach and urgent surgery . I can never do things the way way! Try not to stress too much!!!! HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 223

time off from work - help

I'm a week out from revision surgery, and I don't think I'd be ready to go back to a job that requires so much energy yet (not to mention the lifting!). I'd give yourself 2 weeks just to be on the safe side.
  15. Who'sThere

    post op q's!

I am also preop, but I do have LapBand. My revision other rny is 12/15, so I'm right ahead of you. I can't answer all these but I'll weigh in on a few. #3. Sip, sip, sip. All that you can. My group preaches liquid first then Protein #4. No. Keep them off for a while. #5. My group says when you are off pain meds and feel like it. #8. If you are comfortable that way, go for it but watch your drains. You don't want those pulled out. My group recommends sleeping in a recliner or propped up on pillows. #9. I am very concerned that you are this close, and this hasn't been explained to you. I had to attend a nutrition class all about this, go to a support group meeting where this was discussed, was given a binder with all the details spelled out, and I have already had one nurse call going over it again to make sure I'm aware. Your surgeon and dietician may have a slightly different regime than mine, but basically, you will be on liquids (VERY small quantities over time) on day one then progress to full liquids, again, over time. Eventually purees, then mushy, then soft, and so on. It's way to much detail to respond to in a single comment. #10. Probably. Shock to your body from surgery. It will grow back, though. If you search, there was a recent post explaining some of the science behind it. Best of luck! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App
  16. I love to hear that Hagengirl3!Im same age and having revision from band to bypass in 2 days time. I'm so scared that I'm making a mistake and that I'll regret it. Have you regretted your decision for bypass at all?? Can you tolerate alcohol at all? I just hope to have a glass of wine occasionally. Im mostly afraid of never being able to eat out with friends at restaurants again. Its a big part of socialising here in Australia. Have u found foods that you just cannot eat at all? Would you do it again if you could go back in time? Julie Sent from my GT-I9505 using the BariatricPal App
  17. I can only speak from my personal experience and I had the RNY procedure, not a revision. I also have a high tolerance for pain mostly because I have had 5 spinal surgeries and they are pure hell. Honestly I found that first the first couple of days pain meds helped with initial surgical pain but honestly the real pain mostly came from the gas they pump into your belly for the procedure. Pain meds don't do anything for that at all. They simply don't touch it. the only thing that worked for me was walking walking walking, sipping Water and a heating pad. The other pain I had was when my bowels were starting up again, that can be very uncomfortable but I honestly found that chewing gas X tablets really helped that situation. I took liquid Vicodin the 2 days I was in the hospital and the first day at home. After that I moved to liquid Tylenol and honestly the alcohol in that simply did not feel very good so I quit taking pain killers all together on day 2 home from hospital. By the liquid Vicodin was horrible feeling to my tummy too. It honestly made me not want to take it. It really wasn't that bad but I do know that others really struggled with the pain.

    Smoking---Yikes!!!

Gina, I can completely relate, and I am not the best person to talk to about it. I've quit and gone back to smoking 3 times since having my revision. The main concern with smoking post-sleeve is ulcers. Even though, I haven't had any issues in 18 months since going back to smoking. I wish I could tell you some fabulous story, or remedy, but smoking for me is the one thing that is my horrible habit that I can not kick. I've tried Wellbutrin, and I dropped down to 119lbs, lost my appetite, it made me manic, and overall was a horrible experience for me. Chantix is expensive, and not covered by our insurance. The patch, gum, lozenges make me a total nut job so I have to do it cold turkey, and for that to work, I'd have to be on an isolated island with an IV of Moscato, and tons of hot cabana boys to keep me occupied. Hypnosis is the one thing I haven't tried.
  19. There was certainly a good amount of faith on my part. But I felt like I was in good hands, he has mountains of experience, is chief of bariatrics and is a great surgeon. There is just not a lot of call for revisions in my area. I'm three months out now, I feel great, no problems, losing weight, and loving all the foods I can eat now that the wretched band is gone! I love my sleeve, it's just a bit unique, like me!
  20. Tough decision you have make, and I sure can understand why you feel so confused and frustrated! Sorry for all the stuff you've been going through. I hope you can get some answers here that will help you with your decision. This is just a general, overall statement from observations I've made after three years of personal reading and listening to people in support groups. Of course, there are undoubtedly many people who have had the LB for years with no complications. It seems though that more people, overall, have issues with their LB than those who have GB or sleeve. And it also seems that there are a lot of LB people who later end up doing a revision to either sleeve or GB. Again, this is just what I have observed. Just FYI, I've had sleeve for 3 years, never any complications, and best decision I ever made. There is some pretty good scientic data out there now on the sleeve, and it is very favorable. I think the whole "stretching sleeve" thing has become this crazy urban legend. If sleevers are following the eating plan and lifestyle, there is no such thing. Good luck to you and let us know how you're doing.

    Need Advice

Sorry think I was writing while still stressing so cams out jumbled. I changed doctors when I kept being told that I wasn't losing because I apparently don't know how to count calories & was told to join weight watchers, which I did for support & still wasn't losing. By the time I stopped using that doc I was gaining still even on no breads/pastas, lean Proteins and veggies. When I saw the new doctor they found that the band was so restricted liquids couldnt pass and he advised that I was at the weight I should be at for Lapband surgery, that based on y start weight and my weight at the time I was at the % that most patients lose to. That had I wanted more of a weight loss I should have had gastric. They adjusted my band so it wasn't so tight and at that point being told that I spent $13,000 for thus surgery & those were the results I would only be able to obtain using the band I started seeing the nutritionist for more support and taking phentramine and was able to get my weight down 20lbs. Since July started having health issues we chalked up to stress until November when the GI problems really got bad nearly landing my in the hospital but testing had to wait for my insurance with the new company to kick in in Jan. at that time they started checking my gallbladder and intestines to see what was making me do sick. Plus blood panels for thyroid again (waiting on those results done last week) Those issues started neausa and vomiting which caused my band to slip and the irritation cause swelling and I wasn't able to swallow Water at that point so last week when they found that they unfilled my band and stated that the doctor who initially did my surgey has a history of not implanting the ban a the correct angle and they end up doing a lot of his revisions. I go back in Thursday for a barium swallow to see of the band corrected its self. Luckly the new insurance will cover if I need a revision due to medical needs which I qualify for so if needed they can remove his work and inplant a new band, remove this one all together and no band or gastric is another option. Because I've had such rotten luck with having complications since the surgery I was debating having it removed all together, but then all my hard work and money is gone and I may start gaining back even more weight, go for gastric or attempt the band again and see if I take to it better this time. It's not so much a matter of junk foods, pastas breads. I've always tried to avoid those as much as possible because we have weight issues in my family. It's not being able to eat almost any vegetable or I bp, have to drink them, most meats can't eat. So I end up sick from throwing up or not getting enough nutrients ect. We laugh at tw irony of a woman who can't keep down almost anything half the time stays the same weight or gains ha! Wasn't so bad till I tore a ligament in my toe at Christmas so working out has been more of a challenge but am able to more around better now.
  22. Name...................Start..........Current..........Goal ......To Go Momto1plus1.........228.8............227.6............218 .8.......8.8 Teresajo...............195..............188...............185......... ....3 Shortgal.................189..............184................182.............2 I squeeked out one pound since last week. Sort of in a stall ( again). Doing my usual day of liquids (today) when that happens. Fill next week, still can't get the fill right, yet. My original challenge goal was 184 and I changed it to 182 midstream, since end of challenge is before my fill, not sure I will make revised goal, but overall scale continues to go in the right direction. Good Luck everyone!

    Dating awkwardness

Am I the only person that just doesn't tell the person I am interested in about my surgery? I had the lapband for five years and just had it revised to bypass. Dating has always been awkward and i dread dinner dates. I hate being stared at by the guy and asked why I am eating so slow or why I didn't eat so much. Or even worse when I had the band the constant running I the bathroom to "cough", up food. I was embarrassed of the weight I had gained that caused me to get the band in the first place and even more embarrassed when I still wasn't as skinny as I thought I should be.
  24. I'm a recent Band to RNY. My revision was performed on the 21st of March. Very happy with the change! No real advice, you've been through the surgery before, so this time around it's really not any different, they used the same incision points for my revision, so no new scars, recovery wasn't much different than it was with the band as far as pain and mobility. Surgery was longer, and recovery in hospital was a few extra days, but all in all, it wasn't different enough from the band installation in many regards. If you've got any specific questions, please make sure to hit the quote button so I get alerted to your reply, or you can send me a private message and we can chat there. Congrats and good luck!
  25. Hi everyone! I'm new here. My husband had a lapband placed in June 2008 and had list almost 100 lbs and then gained it all back. He is set to have said band removed on 3/24 & he is planning on having a gastric sleeve in 2-3 months after the revision. I'm here to learn more, to learn as much as I can so that I may be the best support. I want to learn what the journey will be like for him and how he can avoid having a relapse and gaining weight after a success. I look forward to getting to know all of you and I appreciate your advice and your letting me into your journey
