Apple Cider Vinegar Discussion
SteveT74 replied to keylady42's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
KeyLady42, we've all been in your shoes--or we wouldn't have needed bariatric surgery. I don't think there is such a thing as "trying to stick to your diet plan". That's like being a little bit pregnant. You either are or are not sticking to the plan--no in between. Since you're five years post-op, the original post-op plan may not be the right plan for you. Your nutritional needs may be different now. You should probably make an appointment with your surgeon for a follow up and meet with your practice's nutritionist to come up with a plan that may be better for you. Personally, I think a keto style diet would be a really great option for someone that's five years out and has regained a little (15 pounds regain after losing 220 isn't a huge amount, but I understand your concerns about how that can snowball). You need to find a dietary lifestyle that will be sustainable for your now and into the future. Also, regardless of what dietary lifestyle you are following, are you tracking your marcros and calories using an app like MyFitnessPal??? Some dietary lifestyles place less emphasis on calorie consumption (which is ok), but calories always matter in the end. You can't lose weight on even keto or atkins if you're eating 4500 calories a day of healthy fats and proteins. If you are getting out of that habit of tracking your macros and calories, it's time to start it up again. It's hard to know how much you are consuming if you're just eyeballing your food and guessing how many calories your eating. If you do that, chances are that you'll be off by hundreds of calories at the end of the day (usually underestimating your consumption). It's time to get that food scale out so you know what you're putting in your mouth. It's ok to go off diet every once in a while, but you can't let one bad meal turn into one bad day, turn into one bad week etc. You need to get right back on the bandwagon and double down on your discipline. Finally, are you sticking with your exercise program or have you given up on that? Weight is lost in the kitchen, not the gym---but it still helps a little with weight loss and it's very important for overall health. Physical fitness and regular also helps motivate most people to eat better (particularly when they see and feel how hard it is to burn off those calories). I wish you the best of look with the continuation of your WL journey!! -
Has anyone in this forum used the Trim Away pills after surgery? I was sleeves April 2017 and I am gaining my weight back 😢 I have ordered the Trim Away pills from Bariatric Pal they are suppose to suppress your appetite and I don’t think they are working for me because I’m hungry a hour after taking the pills and drinking my meal replacement shake. 🤷🏽♀️ Any suggestions?

"We don't think you're a good candidate for WLS at this time" ....Should I seek a 2nd opinion?
Frustr8 replied to Dryad's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did you ask them why they felt that way? Maybe it is something else that you can cure easily besides lack of support. Many people go in without support, find supportive others in their journey, I have found some here on Bariatric Pal as well as a very few friends, most of my peer group have died, some of which should have joined me instead of dying with obesity- generated diseases . But I survived long enough to receive surgery, hardest yet the most rewarding thing I have done in years, I can't really regain the years I spent in tears but I can make the rest of my life the best of my life. This I Can DO! -
Hiatal Hernia repair & Revision from sleeve to bypass on 1/21/2019
NewChiGirl replied to beautiful12no's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It is very strange. Everyone I talked to on BariatricPal has said once their doctor put in “medically necessary” the insurance providers approved. My insurance coordinator said once they see bariatric surgery they default under the rules of their bariatric requirements even though the revision isn’t for weight loss but GERD -

Thank you for sharing that, I did mine in a hospital setting, it's a good thing nobody has seen my ugly wuggly pictures all wired up, I look like I need to be taken out behind the barn and put out of my misery. I look like a BEFORE picture for Weight Loss Surgery, anyone seeing it would go running to the Bariatric facility and ask for a preventive make-over gastrically! And I deluded myself at that time that I was CUTE! -
Medicare absolutely covers bariatric surgery. As does all Medicare advantage plans. Medicare advantage plans are required by law to cover all services that Medicare covers. I have a Medicare advantage plan and my gastric bypass is covered 100 percent with no deductables or copays. My medicare advantage plan is through United healthcare. I heard about this , and if it doesn't feel good or fit your lifestyle, then don't. Everybody and every body is different so what works for one might not work for you. If you feel one cookie will make you turn the wrong way, then don't. It is perfectly fine to not do so. It is your journey, you are behind the steering wheel. Go for it and enjoy the view! It is similar to what happened to me last week. A colleague of his told him I should "train my stomach" by drinking soda and eat and drink at the same time. She also said that doing physical training will prevent loose skin. Because that was what she did. It took quite a bit of talking from my side that no, I will not train my stomach, and no, exercise will not prevent loose skin. If that comes, I welcome it! It means I am successful! But I take my bariatric team serious and even though I do eat chocolate now and then, in general I follow their advice.

Gastric sleeve revision?
Frustr8 replied to need2bthin!'s topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Many on here have and I'm sure you can too. You may have to fight a battle more than once to win the war. But it can be done, go and consult with your bariatric surgeon, he or she will help you search your options. -
Can I afford the post-op diet?
CaribeRidge replied to sheslittletex's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
You might also want to look-up recipes that contain the items you can find close to you easier. The vitamins are forever but the expensive shakes are not so don't be turned off by the cost there. Also it's true that you wont be eating much so you will need to buy less. You can also try combining a bit of expensive with much more cheap stuff. In Hawaii you might want to grow your own veggies for fillers. Look up recipes for the specific stages in Pinterest There are tons of them. I bought these vitamins here ProCare Health "1 per Day!" Bariatric Multivitamin Chewable - 30-Day Supply for $22.99 That's .76 cents per pill. I also bought the citracal petites 400 mg Calcium Citrate With 500 IU Vitamin D3 on Amazon 200 pills for $10.89. My last suggestion is to talk to local store manager and ask if they would be ok ordering some things for you when they place their orders to save on shipping. -
I didn't realize there was such a thing or that it has a name. Learning a lot on Bariatric Pal.😝

I swore up and down that I was NOT a stress eater. I really believed it. I had my initial peych eval and had to come back a week later to discuss the results of the written part. Well I went home and I was pretty anxious about my follow up on the psych eval. I mean... I really Wanted to pass the psych eval so I could proceed with my surgery. One day I found myself rummaging through the fridge and the cupboards and back to the fridge and not really finding anything I wanted. Then it hit me! I'm not hungry! I'm stressed! I AM a stress eater! I finally went back for my psych eval follow up. I admitted to them what I discovered about myself. Long story short I passed my psych eval. Being a stress eater doesn't disqualify you from weight loss Sur gery. In some cases they may identify some issues they want you to work on thru counseling before clearing to proceed. They didn't require me to that but I've elected to go to counseling while moving forward with the bariatric process. I think if I were you I'd get a 2nd opinion. One thing I've learned is trained proffessionals can often look at us objectively and see things that we really just can't. Sent from my moto e5 (XT1920DL) using BariatricPal mobile app -
Can I afford the post-op diet?
notmyname replied to sheslittletex's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I use bariatric fusion vitamins. 1 chewable vitamin 4x/day. I use the orange, but they have several flavors. And I think you can buy a sample pack. I buy them from this website (and I usually check Amazon to see who has the best price). I buy enough at one time for free shipping (not sure how free shipping works to Hawaii). For protein shakes, I try to drink different things. Some that I like: Premier protein chocolate (I buy at Costco), Unjury chocolate powder (buy from their website), and different syntrax nectar (I buy from this website or Amazon - whoever has the best deal. I got a sample pack, then bought a 2lb container of my two favorites - roadside lemonade and fuzzy navel. If your town has a health shop, they'll also have some protein powders. It is a good idea to have some on hand for immediately after surgery, but note that your taste buds might change, so don't buy too much in case you suddenly don't like what you used to. -
What questions should I ask?
lifeasfaith replied to J'sJourney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I asked my surgeon if he did other surgeries and if so what percentage of his practice was bariatric? Is the hospital he practices at a center of excellence? Is he accredited as a surgeon of excellence? Does he have a surgical team he routinely uses? If so how long have they been working together? Has he had any patient deaths and if so, under what circumstances? How long has he been doing bariatric surgery and how was he trained? I also recommend this book . It's available on amazon.com, eBay and may be available at your local library. Sent from my moto e5 (XT1920DL) using BariatricPal mobile app -
I am weighing all of the positives versus all of the negatives while trying to make a final decision about surgery. I have been considering the gastric sleeve surgery for years, and am now closer to making decision than I have ever been . The referral has been made and I have scheduled my consultation. So far, just about everything I have researched has me leaning towards going for it except my fear that I won't be able to afford the expense of groceries in the future. Why are healthy foods so expensive? And the protein and vitamins expense is scary to think about. I have joint pain, apnea and high blood pressure as well as a rare disease and know that my future health would benefit from the surgery, but I'm so poor! Is bariatric surgery only a solution for people with more substantial finances? (I have insurance and some savings to help with surgery costs). And advice?

To snack in between meals or not to snack
GradyCat replied to Kris77's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The binder my bariatric team gave me states that I should have three meals per day and two snacks, but states the snacks are "only if needed." I "snack" on sugar-free pudding or a sugar-free popsicle. -
Well congratulations to you, there have been others, I'm sure they will weigh in soon, saw someone just about a week ago, so I'm sure she'll find you. Are you hoping for a little boy or girl? I'm sure between your OB and Bariatric surgeon they'll they'lovely you get the proper nourishment for both of you, it's a little more difficult, that's why they often say wait 18 months so you fully recover, but it is what it is, and God just may have planned this special blessing for you! Hope to be updated as you progress along, God Bless you and the Little One,in the meantime!

January surgeries?!

I use the Bariatric Advantage Ultra Multi with Iron and I hate it! It smells awful. I've heard good things about Celebrate vitamins, so I think I'm switching to them. You can get them from the BP store or on Celebrate's website. Hope you start feeling better soon! -

Since my RnY on the 23rd, my sense of smell is extremely acute!! Nothing smells good! I’m getting my water in, but I’m really turned off by broth big time. Also, could anyone please suggest a pleasant tasting Bariatric multi vitamin? The one I use is overwhelming. I know I haven’t posted too much positive, but I’m pretty miserable right now. As soon as I start walking a little bit, I start getting light headed and nauseous. -

I would head for 1. Center of Excellence Hospital 2. a State land-Grant teaching hospital, they tend to be most up to date with every thing, every nuance, I went to Ohio State University- Wexner Medical Center in my state Capital of Columbus, I received surgery an RnY , at the age of 72 years 8 and half months, a struggle close to what you may encounter, it is n9t an easy task, my high weight was 365 pounds, I now am 100 pounds lighter at 267 pounds soaking wet, 5 months out from surgery, still more to lose but I Shall do it! I would never go back to the tired sick person in constant pain and sure that I would die that way, no siree! It is not a walk in the park, a real struggle but many many your size have found success, you have youth on your side, you're naturally more resilant than a Bariatric Grandmother like Me. Please search, find somewhere, a surgeon and program you can trust, before you develop body breakdowns you cannot come back from, yes most programs will say lose weight but the right people will help you, they won't let you just "swing in the breeze". My program has Bariatric Surgery and Metabolic Weight Loss as part of their title, they don't just slash people open, they work on ALL the facets of Weight Loss. If Kaiser Permanente isn't a fit, I'm sure there are others, California has many medical options of other plans! My own surgeon is chief of Bariatric Medecine but he also is a full professor in the College of Medicine , this is YOUR LIFE, search for the Very Best you can find. And you always have a friend in me for I do know about uphill battles, fought more than a few. You have desire, if you can summon up that much courage, you will succeed and I will celebrate with you as the pounds come off, Promise! -
Aerophagia is what it's called. When air enters the esophagus and goes into the belly during sleep from too high of a pressure from a CPAP machine. My Bariatric Dr. knew I used a CPAP, and my sleep Dr. knew that I was having Bariatric surgery. Neither of them ever mentioned to me that this is a thing. Well about 2 weeks post-op, after I had lost about 40lbs total, my body getting leaner, the high pressure of my machine started pushing air into my new tiny belly while I slept. After a couple of days waking up to a full belly of air, I started looking online for answers, It was on a Saturday, so I would have to wait till Monday to call the dr. and find out what could be done. They lowered my pressure and it stopped doing this, but I fear it messed up my new stomach a little. And I think the amount it takes to satisfy me is a direct result of this. There's no going back from this now, so I'm just leaving my rant here, and moving on with my plan, and knowing that even though I may be able to eat a bit more than the suggested 4oz max at a meal right now, It's by far less than the overfilled plates that I could put away prior to surgery. 😕

I'm self employed and purchased insurance through Kaiser in Washington State that covered WLS. I'm not sure how it is in California but the Kaiser bariatric program is top notch here in WA. Make sure whoever you go through has the accredited bariatric center of excellence rating. There's a lot of shady WLS mills out there. Good luck! -
Thanks, Steve!... Like many of us - I am striving for that 199 pd. milestone come Spring! It has been over 20 years since I was under 200. ;[ So, I am very excited to know the sleeve will assist me to never going back to that place again. Congratulations!!! on your 46 loss. Just think 36 pounds more to go AND we will all be admiring you on the June cover of GQ! ;] Ladies, I also struggled with nausea from vitamin regime, but I think thru trial & error (and, throwing a lot of gag stuff away) over the past few weeks - I found Flintstones complete (2 a day) recommended by LOLO, Celebrate B-12 quick melt and Calcium Citrate orange soft chews to be working well. It helps to take them after a meal, and I try to stagger the doses (while not very convenient) for less irritation. Like Steve, I am tolerating solid meat proteins well. Just had Chipotle pulled pork recipe from Sarah Kent's cookbook for Sleeves (a bariatric nutritionist from a surgery center of excellence). Only eat ¼ - ½ servings and instead of a bun - I wrap three little sandwiches in english cucumber (almost seedless) or Bibb lettuce leaf (soft). Delicious and long satisfying! Her recipes have kept me sane, and do introduce balance like Steve mentioned, other important nutrients besides "all protein" especially, post op 6 - 7 weeks and onward... If you are able to tolerate. Many are very happy eating clinically and precise just for fuel... I have always been a foodie, and have enjoyed experimenting with new and better ways of eating for a long-term, sustainable Sleeve lifestyle. We also like to entertain. Her baked Vanilla oatmeal with various fruit options is excellent with high protein ingredients. I have this many mornings heated with a little 1% milk to soften. It keeps me energized without a drain. I am losing right on schedule without crave or hunger which is also Sarah's goal for scientifically sound formulated menus. Unfortunately, I never liked Greek yogurt, flaked fishes, crab or tuna fish without a mayo mask. Her book does include a Fish chapter with dishes I plan to try and be open to... Shrimp cocktail tonight. ;] I think all our December Sleevers are doing great each at their own pace thru the good, bad and ugly! None of this is a tip toe thru the tulips!

@lifeisfaith what is your problem? She’s asking for advice about surgery and all you can say is “make funeral arrangements “! That’s uncalled for. Thousands of people go to Mexico for medical treatments (not just wls) and they come home fine. If you don’t feel comfortable going there for surgery that is fine but don’t bad mouth us who do. @Merf12 it is normal to feel scared about all this. It is major surgery. Be sure to do your research. Im using Go Light Bariatrics for my surgery in April but there are loads of other qualified surgeons down there (Endobariatric, A Lighter Me and others). If you need to talk any more about your worries, just PM me and we will figure it out. You got this hon!!

I work at a company that is a small business and majority of health benefits for small do not cover bariatric. I cannot answer for self employed. My guess is, if you are going to pay 4 to 5 hundred in insurance premiums then i would just do self pay so you dont have to go through all the pre requirements. Also if you get on obama care it is not covered UNLESS you are in one of the 12 states where it is mandatory covered. Good Luck on your Journey!
