    Mini Goals :)

Today I’m starting my first day of week 3 post op (2nd week of purées). I had hoped by today I would have achieved one of my specific mini goals. I was hoping to end the month under 300 lbs. Seeing that “2” in front of my weight for the first time in nearly 20 yrs. was something have have dreamed about but always fell short of since crossing that 300 point. The closest I got to that on my own was 309. Started out strong loosing about 23 lbs my first week, only to hit a big stall during my second week. I was struggling on purées to hit my water, protein and calorie goals. I won’t lie, I was prepared for a stall week 3 - but not week 2. It was so frustrating hovering right at the mark 300 on the scales, but I refused to let myself get discouraged and focused how far I had come so far!! This morning I hopped on the scales and low and behold I had movement and I’m solidly under 300!!! It may only be just barely, but I’m at 298 and that feels soooooooooo good! There is nothing quite as motivating as hitting goals and making progress… even small goals. June 2021 - my heaviest was 382. I lost 50 pounds leading up to my pre op liquid diet. Another 10 pounds was lost on the liver shrining diet. Today I am 16 pounds away from having lost 100 pounds! I can’t even believe I am saying that!!! That seems attainably close for the first time ever (to loose 100 pounds!). I have a long way to go. My final goal is less of a number and more of a feeling of being healthy - what feels right … but I’m more motivated than ever to tick off these mini goals one at a time and get to maintenance.

    Stalls??

Just don't give the stalls any thought at all. I stressed through them and drove myself crazy since my surgery exactly one year ago today. I managed to lose over 110 pounds. I am currently in a two month stall and it is not bothering me...I am sticking to my routine, getting my protein and water, doing my exercise and it will eventually pass. Or maybe my body is at the weight it intends to be at...which is fine. But you will being losing again if you are not at target, just make sure you are sticking to your calorie, water, protein and exercise plan.

    August surgery buddies!

Girl I feel ya, I had a 2nd-week stall as well and I just started week 5 and been in a stall again since last Thursday. They told me my activity was to high for the calories I'm taking in. Stalls will happen but keep your head up. 💜

I haven't lost 1 pound the last week, and I am really mad/frustrated/irritated.

Will cravings for sweets and carbs stop

I’m beginning my 3rd week post op. So far I haven’t experienced “hunger” in the true sense of the word. I have had head hunger/cravings twice since my pre-op diet… both were when I had access to those foods (my kids birthday party and treats brought home from a fantasy football party) and they have taken me a little to work through, because it’s usually for things that would derail me if I had them right now. I’m happy to report I did not give in to the cravings. I have some mornings where I wake up feeling unsettled. If I wait to long to eat I don’t feel well (but if I eat to early I don’t feel well) - so those mornings I’ll start the day with 1/2 a shake (one full shake is to much right now) . That allows me the time to get ready for my day, take my meds & let them kick in and give me time to work on my water before having something to eat around 10:30. Since I don’t feel hungry - I try to work around a schedule for eating and drinking to help meet my goals. I tend to eat more than I should (by a bite or two) and then feel uncomfortable or my stomach hurts - if I don’t plan or eat mindfully… but it’s getting easier with experience and time (and I imagine that will continue).

    Liquid Diet

If your talking about pre op I was allowed some food. Just lean meat and low carb veggies in small amounts so that was easier. Post op it really was just shakes or clear protein drinks, broth, sugar free popsicles and jello. Yes it got pretty darn boring but once you get to purées it’s a little better and soft food is even easier. Basically you just gotta think of your food as medicine for the next few weeks. It’s what your body needs right now and it’s not forever.

    Liquid Diet

I was only on a clear liquid diet 1 day after surgery, then a full liquid diet for 2 weeks. I most had protein shakes and protein Gatorade. But, I would also buy soups and strain them because the bought broth was too bland. I would drink the soup broth and other people would eat the rest. I also had a few yogurts but I am not a big fan of yogurt so maybe 2 or 3 times in 2 weeks. So yea, I was very focused on hitting protein and fluids so mainly stuck with the shakes and Gatorade protein drinks.
  8. Hello everybody, Just about 3 weeks ago I had a vsg in Turkey (originally from the UK) everything went well for the first couple of weeks, I had a visit to the doctor when I got back and it seemed to be getting all on track. Then, a few days ago, I am burning with a fever. Naturally, I panic and assume the worst sort of diagnosis, but in actual fact, it turned out to be COVID. Which isn't great, tbh, but I suppose it was better than a leak or some such. Anyways, yesterday, I am starting to feel better from the covid, when my stomach starts to hurt, particularly at night, stopping me sleeping. The pain is intense and the stomach area feels warm but my temperature is fine. It feels like wind, and I do pass some gas, but the feeling and pain is still there after goodness knows how many peppermint teas and Rennie deflatines (simeticone for you medical types). I just can't seem to clear this gas at all, is this something I should be concerned about? I really don't have many medical professionals to consult, due to COVID making me isolate, so I was kinda hoping somebody here might have had a similar experience after the initial gas has left post of and some idea of how to deal with it! Cheers for reading

    Stalls and weight gain

You’ll discover your body reacts very differently after surgery. Besides changes to your metabolic rate, body set point (the weight your body is happy at), there are hormonal changes (hunger, satiation, etc.), reduction of the volume of food you can eat, etc. the most important change, & the one you have to do the work for, is the change in how you look at eating: what you ate & why you ate. Like most of us before surgery, we could diet, lose weight & then watch the weight come back again. I know it was because once I stopped the diet, I went back to eating in the same way I had before I lost weight. The diets I were on also didn’t change my set point like the surgery did so I would eventually revert to that higher weight again. And the more restrictive the duet, the slower & harder it was to lose. The surgery allowed me the time to change a lot about how & what I eat & understand why I ate. Three years out, I don’t consider I’m on a diet. This is just how & what I eat. And I feel way better for it. Fluctuations are part of life, even more so if you’re female (hormones are a b*tch). You never eat or drink the exact same thing every day. You don’t poop or pee the same amount every day. I know my fluctuation is usually about a a kg. And if I have a pee night ( peed every 30 mins for 3 hrs last night) I can weigh 500g less the next morning. You have to either accept the fluctuations or keep off the scales every day. Weight loss is NEVER a straight downward line. It goes up & down, zigs & zags. As long as the general trend is downwards, you’re fine.
  10. In my experience and opinion, take this as a good thing and the time to address any issues that might trip you up. The surgery can be a great tool, but the head hunger and the psychological component is equally important. A pass on to surgery with no real guidance was a big red flag and one of the reasons I left my first program. Without that guidance I didn’t think I could be successful. My new program had the guidance and support I felt I needed to be more successful. Mine was a three month program and there were times I wish it had been 6. I managed to get everything in… and feel fairly confident in my path. Best of luck. That time will fly by!!!
  11. Yay!! Congrats to you too. I’m excited to hear how your pregnancy progresses. I am having the morning sickness now and it isn’t fun. I’m still losing weight but I also see myself eating more often - all throughout the day. My nutritionist said I just need to aim for 80-100g protein each day and continue my vitamin routine. I haven’t yet seen my OB, hopefully this week or next. This is so exciting and I’m so glad you’re in this boat with me! Cheers (minus the beers)

    September surgery buddies!!

The differences are so interesting to me! My program seems pretty hands off as well, but they did have me do a swallow test, chest x-ray, blood work, and an ekg. They'll call me at the end of the week for my covid test. I didn't get sponges but was sent a bottle of antimicrobial soap for the night before and day of. They'll also call me the day before for a check in time.

    September surgery buddies!!

Yay!! I hope the pre-op diet goes well. Hopefully the time will pass quickly and the 12th will be here before you know it. I keep hearing you guys having pre op appointments and testing. I don't have any of that. They will just call me the day before the surgery to tell me what time it will be at. They gave me special sponges to wash with the night before and again the morning of but that is it. No blood tests, no covid tests, nothing. They don't even check up on me and remind me to do the 2 week liquid diet even though my last appointment at the surgeons office was in early june. Even more differences in protocols I guess lol.

    Need more protein!! Please help

Hi! I'm 7 weeks post-op but I clearly remember being 2 weeks post-op, I found Protein2O bottled beverage really helps me get my protein in! Its protein infused water, You get 15g of protein from a 16oz (average sized) bottle of it! It's sugar free and counts as protein AND clear liquid! Also, my doctor has me drinking Fairlife milk, its 13g for an 8 oz glass vs. its also lactose free and has 50% less sugar than regular milk! Its pretty popular in my area.

    Liquid Diet

My clear liquid diet only lasted 3 days, and I was in the hospital for 2.5 of those, but I had broth, jell-o, and herbal tea. I've been on a cloudy liquid diet for almost a week now (with 6 days left to go until 'soft' stage), and I've had... Imagine brand organic broccoli soup (pureed) Imagine brand portobello mushroom soup (also pureed) Trader Joe's butternut squash soup (same) Bariatric Fusion meal-replacement protein shakes in flavors cappuccino, chocolate, & strawberry-banana Orgain clean protein shakes (in cartons) and to drink, besides the protein shakes... Hint flavored water (uncarbonated, unsweetened) TJ rooibos blood orange tea (herbal) Vitamin Water Zero (limited to 1/day) ...and lots of plain filtered water, of course

    Stalls and weight gain

During the healing phase of weight loss surgery, your weight will fluctuate for various reasons. You're healing from major surgery, just follow your program recommendations and have realistic expectations. You're three weeks post op, and that's when the majority of wls patients experience their first stall, which can also include some weight fluctuations like you described. My weight increased and decreased and bounced around a bit during the healing phase, I stayed focused on hitting my fluid and protein goals, and today I'm 6 weeks post op revision to RNY and the weight is falling off now, because I'm past the healing phase and back to exercisisng. I started losing fat and gaining muscle pretty soon after surgery, according to my smart scale. Muscle weighs more than fat, so even tho I was losing fat, I was gaining muscle, so the scale didn't move, but I was losing inches, my clothes were getting bigger. Just keep doing what your team told you to do and you will be fine.
  18. Hello LilaNicole, First of all Congratulations on your pregnancy! I am currently 6 months pregnant and so far everything is going well. Baby is good and I am good as well. I have gained 2 lbs since I found out I was pregnant. So my VSG is still helping me with my weight. The first trimester of pregnancy was the worse for me as I had bad morning sickness. I am currently in the second trimester and I feel so much more energy and I am eating a more normal amount (well normal for us VSG patients). Baby is measuring great and healthy. We found out we are having another little boy! We are so excited and have begun doing some baby shopping. I will try to update once we get to the third trimester in a few weeks.

    Caffeine!!!!

Nobody ever told me anything regarding coffee, so I just kept on with what I was doing. I drank coffee up to the day before surgery, and I had coffee three days post surgery. I’m currently almost 2 years out and I drink a ton of coffee every day, and I have never had any issues whatsoever. Interestingly enough I just had a pretty big plastic surgery operation less than a week ago, and my anesthesiologist asked me to have black coffee the morning of my afternoon surgery since she said she hates to have people have caffeine headaches post surgery, and there is absolutely no medical reason to not drink it. So there’s that as well.

    August surgery buddies!

i never wore a binder and this incision has not hurt until yesterday. It's just so weird to get a new type of pain three weeks after the surgery. I did email a nurse at the hospital, and she sent me a reply with more questions. I replied to her, but they're closed now. It's not acute pain, just a sting now and then, and when I lean forward etc. I don't have a fever or increased heartbeat, so it's probably not that serious.

    Need more protein!! Please help

Are you able to eat purees yet? Oikos Pro yogurt is 25g protein per cup...however I would be surprised if you were able to eat much more than 1/4 of the container in one sitting at 2 weeks out. (For some added punch, I like adding PB2 peanut butter powder to the banana flavor!, 6 more grams of fiber in 2 TBSP for 60 calories)
  22. Hello everyone :S I am a little more than 2 weeks post op and thankfully as far as healing I have been doing good. My first week was awful as I was barely getting any protein or water intake because it all felt super heavy on my stomach and I began to panic but even being two weeks out I’ve learned more about my body but it’s a working progress. This being said, even though I am getting more protein I am still lacking! Does anyone have any tips on how to get good amount of protein in? I push myself to do 30 gram shake and thankfully my stomach can take tuna but I don’t think I can do 2 shakes at this time and I don’t eat enough meals to get the rest of the protein in. I tired liquacel and it was horrendous! The taste just lingering of fish oil in my mouth has me throwing the bottle out and it was so pricey ugh I really need help

    Stalls and weight gain

A fluctuation that small could be anything. It could be water, full bowels, it could just be that scales are not 100% accurate. I suggest that you weigh yourself less often if it’s going to get to you. I weighed myself daily but I only recorded it once a MONTH. That way I could see the downward trend for certain. That worked for me but it sounds like it’s upsetting you more than it got to me so maybe you should try once a week or so.

    Stalls and weight gain

I understand. We have all been through it and that is why we are all here, in some form or another. Don't panic, if you have a calorie deficit you WILL loose weight. Stalls and fluctuation are common and going to happen. Just follow your plan and keep chugging along and you will see the change.
