Milk Intolerance
MyGastricSleeveLife replied to ValerieSJackson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of the side effects of sleeve surgery is that many people become lactose intolerant. My Bariatric Coordinator suggested Mootopia or other lactose free milk from here on out after my surgery (once I'm on full liquids). -
Anyone know of a good Dr in the Tampa Bay Fl area.
gmanbat replied to 4dogcrazy's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I came from Ohio to here but I know my excellent surgeon knows folks down here, he trained in Florida. I will send them an email. In the mean time: The Cleveland Clinic in Florida is about the best place in the country, my surgeon trained here, they may be able to steer you: http://my.clevelandclinic.org/florida/departments/general_surgery/bariatric/default.aspx I like Tampa General. Here is a link to their Bariatric Unit which is a Center of Excellence: http://www.tgh.org/weight.htm -
not all bariatric diets are low-carb. Some are balanced. Also, once I got a ways out, I mostly just counted calories (although making sure I met my protein and fluid goals) losing weight via exercising is of course possible, but really tough. People overestimate how many calories they burn by exercising. According to research, exercise is much more effective in helping to maintain weight than it is to lose weight. Of course, it's always excellent for your overall health and people should do it (if they're able to, of course) - but as the primary weight loss tool, it's supposedly not that effective (well...unless you're spending a few hours a day at the gym or are into running marathons - that kind of intensity would probably do it!) I'm eight years out and have never reached the point where I've been able to eat without being concerned about my weight. I know from experience that if I eat too many calories for more than a couple of days, my weight will gradually start heading north again. Honestly, a lot of my never-been-obese friends are the same way- they have to watch what they eat. Unfortunately I think that's the way it goes for a lot of people - obese or not. Not many are blessed with the ability to eat whatever they want and not gain weight. also, you'll eventually get to the point where you can enjoy the things you do now in moderation. Nothing is off-limits for me And DS patients can generally eat more than RNY and VSG patients because of the malabsorption (RNY has some malabsorption of calories, but only for about a year, and it's not as strong as it is in DS people). Although if I'm not mistaken, I think DSers do have to be more careful with carbs - IIRC, they don't digest them well - and I know traditional DSers don't have to worry too much about fat (but not sure about SADI patients) - but check with your clinic. They'll know for sure.

Hi: I am from North Vancouver and I chose the TLBC. I didn't do much research on the after care and wish I had, but still on reflection choose the TLBC. Dr. Yau did my surgery and I have had no problems. As I live so far away, to get a fill would have cost me a lot of money travelling. when I attended the TLBC for my first fill, I was given the name of a bariatric surgeon here and the clinic faxed my records to him. Although I will have to pay for the fill, it still is cheaper than going back to TO. Also, the TLBC has a nutrionist and she is available for one on one consults as well as seminars. I met her and she really knows what she is talking about. She read through my meal tracking recors and told me that I was not having enough protein at 3:00 pm and that was probably why I was grazing before supper. She suggested I eat 2 tsps of peanut butter on a few crackers. She was bang on. I haven't been foraging for food since. The TLBC listens to my concerns and I would not hesitate to recommend them highly. Doddie

Dani- Sorry, just reading here and I am curious about the deleted posts although I can guess their content. Educated people deleting posts? I strikes me as odd that you ask what happens if you cheat, specifically "Why not CHEAT?" When people chime in with information you say that you are only accepting technical information from medical personnel..Huh? Ask a doctor or three but this is a support group, not an online medical forum. Then you say that you are looking to be 'scared into compliance', but when you get the info I read that you are not looking for any 'nagging and tuff love'. How do we help without telling you that what you are doing is OK? Because that is what I want to type. I want to help, but what you confess to having done to yourself is not OK (in the medical opinion of 96% of the currently practicing bariatric surgeons). Sending out only care and concern, honestly, Brenda

Why Did You Choose The Sleeve?
legal loser replied to pebbles99's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My mom was banded in 2009 and my best friends mom in 2011. I went to the seminars thinking band and learned about the sleeve. Researched the heck out of it and decided it was for me. Like not having to do the fills (I will still have yearly follow ups at the bariatric center for life) and not having a foreign body in me. At 30, bypass was not an option because I found it too invasive and I didn't want my insides rearranged. My surgeon did all 3 procedures but was initially trained with bypass. At my pre-op I was 90% set on sleeve with a 10% reservation for band. Never once did he push bypass on me and we walked through the pros and cons of the band vs. sleeve and I made the decision to "own" the sleeve procedure. I think whichever procedure you select you have to "own" it to be successful. Good luck with whatever you select. -
There is more to this journey than just not being as hungry. There is a very mental side to re- understanding your body's signs for real hunger learning to chose healthy foods and breaking away from the things that got you here to start with. There are a few books that I've found or were suggested to my by my Bariatric psychologist. 1. Eat, Move,Sleep by Tom Rath 2. Lose Weight Easily by Loving Who You Are. Conquering the mental emotional side of losing weight. By S Wharton 3. The Body Book by Cameron Diaz

Okay so correction to prior statement. My bloodwork was not for the Bariatric surgeon it was for my nephrologist 😅 so once you finish classes: they contacted me to set up surgeon consult and that’s it. he will give his yay or nay. I was nervous that I wouldn’t be approved because I started at 310 and at my last class we did our weigh in and I told them 304 (It was that time of the month) but a few days later I was 297. So I’ll just have to give him an updated weight when we have our chat. did you guys do a last weight in? Check your lo message center? It’s odd that they would call some and not others.

Hello everyone, First post and I am right out of the gate with a rant. I have come here to learn more about my bariatric surgery(VSG) and To make a long story short i am PAYING CASH !!! I don't know the rules yet on listing the business by name but I had some questions i would like to get answered. My Story is that I am doing this surgery (VSG) with my Fiance. So we are PAYING OUT OF POCKET for two surgeries. I was cleared this past week and the surgery scheduler called me and asked when i would like to perform my Sleeve. I told her i am holding off till my Fiance is cleared--meaning she passes her Psych evaluation and we are getting it done together... Fiance was cleared this past Friday for surgery and as of Monday we never even got a call??? Thinking really nothing of it my fiance called on Tuesday and she was kinda given the run around and no one there in the office could really asnwer some pretty basic questions. We had placed a total of 3 calls and one email and nothing !!! This company was not like that though?? they always had answers and they always returned phone calls and email till Tuesday. WE finally got an answer and that was the company was going to call us today at 0900 and tell us some things. 0900 comes and no phone cal. 09:20 comes and stil no phone call so I called them and spoke with a Lisa. Long story short--she said that she didnt think that her company "BS" is the best fit for us?????? i am blown away and said i was just scheduled this past week and i waited on my fiance to get cleared and now your telling me i cant have a surgery i am PAYING CASH FOR???? WTF ???? I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANYTHING SO ASANINE IN MY LIFE AS THIS ??? MY QUESTION IS HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO ANYONELSE WHEN YOU WERE PAYING CASH????

Therapist says "You can do it w/o surgery"
MoMo12onTheGo replied to MoMo12onTheGo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@ProjectMe ...Hi, thanks for responding.. The reason her questioning me was getting on my nerves was because after my psych eval I was required to see a Master Level therapist (on their approved list) to discuss moving on from divorce for 3 sessions where I get to pay $150 each out of my pocket and drive 90m each way. She is not part of my bariatric team and has no reason to go on and on at me like I need her approval. (I wasn't put off my casual questioning to get to know me). I filed for and divorced him in 2008 so wasn't sure why I needed to do that at all but was wiling to jump thru the necessary hoops. I decided to have a positive attitude about it and try to get my moneys worth then got this lady. Ugh! I have my final appt with surgeon next Tuesday so didn't want to bother with rescheduling with someone else. I will let them know, once I am approved, about my experience so they can decide if they should continue to send folks to her. -
health issues due to losing weight too fast

I'm seeing all specialists for each problem that I'm having they are getting together to figure out what's going on they are even getting my bariatric surgeon involved so they can help me -
I guess once you meet Dr. Enochs you will know exactly why his patients feel that way about him. He is exactly what you envision when you think of a Bariatric Surgeon. He is much more experienced in the field than anyone else in Raleigh. In fact, he trained Dr. Moran. Dr. Enochs is so much more personable. Anyway, we should start a Lap Band Support Group in Raleigh or online. Any suggestions?

Other brands of the Protein chicken Soups I like and used a lot right after surgery - when my tub of unjury arrived and I opened the cannister I just about fell over it smelled so bad - someone here compared another products smell to "my old hamster cage" when she was a kid - omg that cracked me up, but that is exactly what that stuff reminded me of, nasty smell I am the queen of giving away the protein stuff I no longer like or can no longer tolerate at my support group meetings - I had not one taker on the French vanilla flavored Bariatric Advantage Vitamins though lol - just got a room full of sourpuss faces, I think it is a universal yuck on that flavor I used these and still like them. When I could have full liquids I strained the veggies and noodles out and they were satisfying with no hamster cage smell - not as much protein as the Unjury, but a compromise I made. http://www.familybariatric.com/store/product/113/Soup-Homestyle-Chicken-Soup/ http://www.familybariatric.com/store/product/111/Soup-Cream-of-Chicken-w-Veg./

My Dr has me on a 12 day protein shack diet, called Bariatric Advantage. Its has been hard with no real food. I broke down tonight and had two eggs. -
Mine does not have a weight, but the picture is too funny. I had my credit cred picture changed, but not my license yet. It is due for renewal this year. I love to whip it out and have people look at me and then the picture. After 100 lbs, it is a big change. Karen(kll724)

Mine isn't due for renewal until 2013, but might have to have it done sooner.. I look very little like my picture since -180 lbs. I've talked to others who've had problems because they changed so much.. Police & Airport Security didn't want to accept the ID.

In my state, when you get your license renewed, they don't take the old one. So I have my licenses from the last 20 years. I happened to pull them out the other day and was horrified! I had no idea I looked as bad as I did. In one, my face was as round as a balloon with no neck! It's now stuck to my refrigerator door as a reminder. Every time I look at it I want to puke. .

That's a neat site. They have some nice things on ebay, but most is out of my price range there. Maybe if I see a ring for when we renew our vows on this site I'll give it a try. That's a pretty great deal, just hopefully legit.

Well congratulations to you, there have been others, I'm sure they will weigh in soon, saw someone just about a week ago, so I'm sure she'll find you. Are you hoping for a little boy or girl? I'm sure between your OB and Bariatric surgeon they'll they'lovely you get the proper nourishment for both of you, it's a little more difficult, that's why they often say wait 18 months so you fully recover, but it is what it is, and God just may have planned this special blessing for you! Hope to be updated as you progress along, God Bless you and the Little One,in the meantime!

Interesting US Bariatric Surgery Statistics

The Best and the Worst: Your Weight Loss Surgery MEDICAL SERVICE Experience
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You’re committing to a tough journey when you decide to get weight loss surgery. Your surgeon and the other health professionals who work with you have a big influence. They can make the journey go smoothly, or they can throw all sorts of obstacles in your path. They can make you feel comfortable and tell you everything you need to know, or they can make you feel like an idiot and withhold information. I’ve even heard stories as bad as bariatric nurses telling patients that it’ll never work! One of my best findings was finding how great my surgeon was. She always was there for me and I am still in touch with her. I am fortunate not to have had any negative experiences around the time I got my lap-band. I guess I could have used a little more nutritional help, but that wasn’t really anyone’s fault. So, what is the best thing you have experienced on the medical or insurance side of weight loss surgery? What is the worst thing? Share your stories here!- 18 replies
