Yay or Nay: Weight loss before surgery for better success
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to Globetrecker's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost about 60 lbs before surgery, and I’ve lost almost 70 in the 5.5 months since surgery. Still actively losing. I’m sure my weight loss would have been faster if I’d not lost the weight presurg , but I’d also be heavier and I don’t care for that idea at all. I’m sitting at a 30 BMI right now, I was a 48. My goal weight is 48 lbs lower than I am currently and my doctor thinks that’s totally reasonable and doable. That means that total loss will be almost 175 lbs. I think that there’s an amount of weight loss that’s certain, and after a point post op then it’s behavior that gets you to continue losing, so it’s not a sure thing anymore. Maybe he’s being conservative and assuming that you won’t keep going. I personally feel motivated by the people I see on this forum who did keep going and got to goal, even though it was a long way away. -
Long deep breath......... The last 3 weeks have been weeks of emotion. Week one discomfort wondering if its all worth it. Week 2 excitement because the pounds are coming off and the adding of full liquids. Week 3 excitement for purees and exercise, then moments of sadness and frustration when the scale didn't move wondering if I am doing something wrong. THANK GOD for this forum where just typing week 3 you she that the stalls are normal!! For those of you new to this take a few hours to just type in all your concerns questions or thoughts you will find something. I got the go ahead to start eating "real food" and go back to the gym so super excited. I am down 17 pounds and 10 inches since day before surgery. The rate of weight loss was 12# week 1 , 4# week 2, 1# week 3....now you see the frustration LOL. The surgery is definitely worth it! Tips that have helps with the mental aspect: On a piece of paper write your why, then 5-6 NON weight goal i.e shopping off the rack, walking up a flight of stars post it on your mirror and check off each one as you meet them. Remember the "old" you died on the surgery table. So what you did before is not going to be the same you are learning every day like an infant. This is a journey not a race Now I need help from the community: I am supposed to add veggies to my meals but still reach my 65 gm of protein but only eat 3 times a day with one snack...how the heck do I do that? I can only tolerate about a 1/4-1/3 cup of food. I asked the dietitian but honestly her answer was...just add then and take the food away..What the heck! ANY advice hot tips are wanted and welcomed! Thanks in advanced!

Yay or Nay: Weight loss before surgery for better success

You're close to my starting BMI and 23 is incredible. What did you do to make a loss *double* what my surgeon is saying is average? -

This is incredible success! My surgeon said most people don't make the kind of weight loss, and with my weight he said I could expect to lose 75 pounds and 100 was unrealistic. Yet YOU did it and many, many other people have too! I wonder what makes the 100 pound mark so unattainable in his eyes? If you did it and so many others have, I can too (right?) -

It makes sense that people who lose weight before surgery lose less weight after surgery -- simply because they have less to lose if they've already lost some! But I certainly wouldn't take that as a recommendation not to lose weight before surgery. I lost about 70 pounds in the 5 months before my surgery. My highest recorded weight was ~340 pounds and I was ~270 the day of surgery. I'm ~150 now (so I've lost ~120 pounds after surgery). So let's say I hadn't lost any weight before surgery and went into surgery at 340 pounds. Maybe I would have lost 150 pounds by now instead of only 120. That would put me at 190 pounds. So I am glad I got a head start on my weight loss before surgery. Keep in mind that the heavier you are, the easier it is to lose each pound. At 340 pounds, it was not difficult for me to lose 10 pounds. At 150 pounds, losing 10 pounds is a major challenge. If you wait until after surgery to start losing weight, your results will be more dramatic because that "easy" weight will be melting off in the beginning. I suppose that could be a benefit because the early post-op stages can be rough and the quick weight loss can keep you motivated. But you will still eventually reach a point where the weight loss slows down. It will just be later than it would be if you lost some of the weight before surgery. In addition to getting a head start on weight loss, I think it was good for me to lose weight before surgery because I started getting into some healthier habits before surgery. I think it's extremely important to log everything you eat (I use MyFitnessPal, but there are other apps that do the same thing), and I've been doing that since 5 months before my surgery. By the time I had surgery, it was already a habit. I had also started to make healthier food choices before surgery, which made it easier to eat healthy foods when I transitioned to solid foods after surgery (also easier to avoid high-fat, high-sugar foods that could cause dumping syndrome after surgery, since I had already reduced my intake of that stuff before surgery). By the way, the lower your weight before surgery, the lower your maintenance weight is likely to be (and the sooner you'll get there), so I'd consider that to be a pretty good argument for losing weight before surgery. -

I've also wondered A LOT about this .. and spent too much time searching the literature etc (I'm a retired academic med/sci it doesn't take much to get me searching!!!) Physiology wasn't my thing and I couldn't find any obvious answers..I wondered/hypothesised to my self that MAYBE during a stall the body is doining something that makes it need/hold onto more of the water taken in and that this cancels out expected loss due to calorie deficit Would love to hear other ideas or if any physiologists/clinical biochemists out there actually know !!!!!! Yay or Nay: Weight loss before surgery for better success

I met with my surgeon this week to schedule my surgery (yay!) I have a BMI of 44 and am 263, and would like to lose 100 lbs. I asked him about how to be successful at this and he said some interesting things that surprised me. Namely: 1) Generally, BMI will go down about 10-12 points but not much more. (That would still leave me overweight! I want to get to a healthy BMI!) 2) People who lose weight before surgery (whether liquid diets, low cal, low carb) don't always lose as much after surgery. I was surprised because I thought that the more weight I lost beforehand would be better. I've seen lots of people on here who lost weight on their pre-surgery diet and did fantastic post-op with their weight loss. What has been your experience? Would love to hear the positive benefits of losing weight pre-surgery. -
Anyone here who had surgery in their 60's?
WafflingWafa replied to Neller's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Agree! Once I found out that serious weight loss was the only thing that might help me ( very very fatty liver nafld/nash) I knew I had to try. I hadn't considered wls I thought I was too old 65/66 but my docs told me otherwise! Wls was my best chance for better health befor my liver got worse. All has gone well Weight loss slow compared to some folk but my health has been improving ! AND no complications to date ( I'm 3mth post op) Best wishes for your surgery Sent from my SM-N975F using BariatricPal mobile app -
Another Stall Thread (With Different Questions I Promise!)
ShoppGirl replied to Soon2bFit21's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don’t understand the science behind it but basically your body thinks you are dying and it is running itself on reduced calories to try to keep you alive. Using less calories means less weight loss. I’m sure it’s not that simple but the important part is it will not last. I’ve said it many times that a human being cannot maintain their weight on the amount of food we are eating. Stalls happen to all of us (I am in one right now) but they always eventually end and for me they usually end with a lot quick few pound loss which almost makes up for the time in the stall. Downward trends are all that really matter. -
Has anyone regretted getting the surgery?
starladustangel replied to Roses436's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost 2 years out. I do not regret the decision to have weight loss surgery at all although if I had known I would end up needing a revision due to reflux I would have chosen bypass initially instead of sleeve but I had no way of predicting that. I'm down 172 pounds. From a 54 BMI to a 24 BMI. Russell stover makes delicious sugar free peanut butter cups. There are reese's and quest ones too. I made what I call peanut butter cup oatmeal for breakfast today which is oatmeal, pbfit powder for protein and Walden farms zero calorie chocolate syrup. I've had diet coke a few times but carbonation bothers me so I have to let it go completely flat and it isn't worth it. I don't miss it too much. My PCP wasn't super big on WLS but my insurance didn't require a referral from him and honestly when I went back for a regular visit about a year post OP he was happy to see that it had been successful for me to have surgery. I don't eat red meat often as I don't do as well with it since my galbladder was removed. -
Anyone here who had surgery in their 60's?
pk88 replied to Neller's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery is May 12th and I will be 63 in August. I can relate to the fat child, yo-yo dieting, multiple weight loss programs, etc, etc. I'm not sure why I waited this long; I only know that I woke up some months ago and decided to get off that treadmill. Right now, I'm 4 days into my pre-op diet and starting to feel really good. In fact, I can't say I'm missing food much at all (though I really miss coffee). I think it just took me until my 60s to finally realize I need a different tool than just will power. I'm glad so many of you have had such unbelievable success and I hope you know it is really encouraging to those of us just starting this journey! I hope to be able to offer the same one day with my own successes. -
May Surgeries - check in!

Hi Arcadia! My surgery is Monday! I am also excited and nervous—but I am ready! I have a hard time with protein shakes, too. I normally like them when I can mix them with almond milk and fruit, but on the liquid, pre-op diet, I can’t have fruit. I love Fairlife Core Protein —26 grams of protein and tastes like chocolate milk to me—it is the best I have found. I only drink one a day though because the sugar content is a little higher than Premier Protein. I have been keeping up with my weight-loss during the pre-op diet, and I am down 15 lbs. Let me know how your surgery goes! -
typically occurs within the first three to six months after surgery or significant weight loss. As the body adjusts to the changes, the hair loss will decrease and then stop. Hair should grow back as normal as long as there are no nutrient deficiencies and you are consuming adequate protein.

Did you hair come back?

Surgery August 2019 - I just stopped losing my hair and seeing lots of new growth (downside, weightloss also slowing down) - I think I'd rather be skinny and bald! -

Dumping syndrome and 3 week stall of weight loss
Cajunincheesetown posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m 15 days post roux en y and have been doing well and even running slowly, Ran 2 miles in less than 32 minutes yesterday including a hill! Last night I felt dehydrated and hungry and I’m now 15 days after surgery so I picked. Mushy meal of beef vegetable soup and I ate it. This morning had horrific bleeding stomach problems and had to miss work. Haven’t had this before- so I tried to eat eggs late afternoon and threw up. This is my first bad day. I am tolerating my medications, etc. but today my stomach is cramping and not very happy. also the weight loss stalled this week- not sure why. Today I finally dropped a pound. anyone have any comments? -
I am 9 months post up.. I lost a lot of hair starting at 3 months post op until about 7 months when it stopped. It is finally starting to grow back now. I just kept taking my vitamins and getting my protein. I did just get my hair cut short so it will be easier for the new growth to catch up. Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app

I am SO disappointed in myself. Self-sabotage post-op
MoominMan posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a gastric bypass in August. I've lost 105 pounds – which is not bad, I guess – but the weight loss has stalled, hardly changed at all since January. The fact is I have been eating too much. I don't dump and bad foods have crept in. Today I ate 4 packets of crisps and 5 small chocolate cakes. That's nowhere near the amount I used to eat of course, but its still really bad. My restriction has never been that strict, from quite early on I could eat relatively large portions for a bypasser. I am sabotaging myself and I feel like I have squandered the goldilocks period of the post-op where your body is most receptive to losing weight. I can't express how sad this makes me. I always knew the transition to healthy eating was going to be hard but it is further complicated by a quite debilitating eating dorser. I've been diagnosed with avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) which has made everything so much harder. For me its not as simple as trying new foods or changing recipes to healthier options; there are so few (we're talking no more than three) reasonably healthy things I can reliably cook myself and eat. But because I end up having the same thing every day, it's not that healthy. Still more carbs than I should be having. It's 8 months since my operation. Is there time to turn this around? -
Losing my hair like crazy. Getting all my nutrients and protein in great. Dietician said it’s just due to weight loss and it will come back once I’m steady not losing anymore. I’m 6 months out. Anyone lose a lot and then it come back later?
-
it's a part of it.... I lost hair with the first sx in 2009, band. But because i lost slowly it was not as bad. 8/28/19 I had the sleeve sx done. My WL was very rapid and the hair fell more. It's coming back. I have a lot of new hair growth and falling had gone down a lot

Many Thanks and Congrats on your weight loss!

Absolutely listen to your team’s advice (they have seen it all) but ultimately the choice is yours. I understand the knee jerk reaction anyone can have from gaining especially after working long and hard to lose. But IMHO the goal is healthy, whatever that looks like for you ❤️ You may naturally gain a little anyway If you are more that 2 yrs from surgery (or when maintenance begins) Weight loss should slow down eventually if you are not actively trying to lose. Congratulations on making it to goal.

I'm 4 months post RNY and hair loss has kicked in. I hate it. My hair also seems dry. But I'm also adjusting to no longer coloring my hair and the gray is a different texture than it used to be when colored. Luckily have a a lot of thick hair and the loss is not noticeable to anyone but me. My WLS team said the same thing as Catwoman did. My GP suggested Rogaine for Women. I haven't tried it.

Hello, My hair is like cotton candy 7 months post -op. I had to get it buzz cut to try and get some nutrition to it. I take all my vitamin's and actually feel great. Any suggestions would be appreciated, please. Kindest Regards, Lola
