I am with you... I have been paying insurance through my employer for 30 years... They would cover high blood pressure meds, diabetes if I had it and shoot even a heart attack but they wouldn't pay for me to get help losing weight. It's just a fact of life and i agree it stinks.

how fast is the weight loss?
SoccerMomma73 replied to Tina727's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oh my dear, it's so variable! I'm 4 months post and down 45, I seem to be losing slow compared to most on here but I have no problems with any food and I feel great so I'll take it! I'm 5'6, started at 255, shooting for 150, currently 210. I am a revision from a lap band and was warned revisions tend to lose slower... I highly recommend not comparing our journey to others though,it'll drive you crazy!!!!! Good luck!!!!! HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 210 -
Question about Surgery?!
ShrinkingPeach replied to MarceMonster's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your surgery date won't get pulled. Good for you for getting started!! Eating better now will make things easier later since its a lifestyle change and not a diet. The way I looked at it any pounds I can lose now means I get even more pounds off with the surgery, I didn't want to gain anything to just have to lose it again...there IS NO overthinking right? lol -
Sorry, one more BCBS of IL ? regarding weight watchers
kewlshort1 replied to shawna_s's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have Humana, not BCBS, but my policy specifically excluded Weight Watchers (and some other similar programs) because they were not "physician-directed". I would guess you would have to verify it with your specific plan to make sure they don't have a similar wording. -
Never been so happy to be 'overweight'!

Congrats on your weight loss. Love the topic. -
Welcome! Wow what a challenge to work at a nursing home! I'm glad you got such a nice chunk of time off to recover it must feel really good. How great that you have even lost weight during your healing phase! By next year you will be a whole new person. Just keep at it and keep going in for fills and "check ins" . You need plenty of support from your surgeons team too. I wish you all the best! Good luck on your journey!

I got approved today from Cigna :-)
Bemabound replied to mrspetendanbury's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am working with Cigna now. What kind of weight loss program or thing did you do for the 6 month supervised stuff. Did your Dr. just have a form that had to be filled out? I have done it all except, I'm at the end of month one of the diet stuff...aaarrggghh!!! Any advise? Thanks, Tracy -
I was sleeved August 8th and was in a stall for 5 weeks!!! It just broke this week when I lost over 2 lbs. I have been SO discouraged and was convinced the weight loss was over. I really hope my stall is over and I keep moving downward on the scale. I feel your pain and frustrations guys.

Hi, I am also fairly new to this. I too have been struggling with my weight for years and have hit my all time high. I have been on every diet imagineable, lose 20-30 lbs., get discouraged and gain it back. I had my first Lap band meeting December 7,2010. I had an endoscopy on December 15th and did the sleep study on January 4, 2011. I got the call 2 days ago that I am approved and scheduled my Lap band for March 31. I had to stall it because I just had foot surgery on February 11 and I am supposed to keep it iced and elevated for 2 weeks and no weight bearing for 6 weeks. So I am excited to follow you on your journey. I start my pre surgery diet on March 17th. You will have to keep me up to date on how its going. Take Care....Hope to hear from you soon. -
Hi Everybody, just been looking over this site, and was quite impressed. I am a little curious about this surgery, as I was banded in the past. I had the lap-band put in, and had it for almost 2 years with no weight loss (except 20 lbs from the beginning-with liquids) No matter how much or little saline was in my band, it was either too much or too little. It was a very frustrating time for me. I threw up just about every meal, and could only eat soft foods. meat or pototo would come back up, as soon as I ate them. Its been almost two years since I had it removed, and never regretted it. But I'm also looking for help again. I am living in Alberta, and I'm also taking part in Weight management seminars. I'm hoping one day to discuss this option in more dept. Please let me know how you got started, where your doctor is from and if it was covered under insurance. The Lap-band cost me $ 15000.00..ouch... Thanks M

AHHH! 2 1/2 weeks ago I hit 200 pounds! 200. First time in years. I was so excited about breaking 200 for the first time since I was in my 20's that I kicked it into high gear. I started walking more everday 2-4 miles. Plus an extra 30 min walk on my lunch at work. I started drinking more Water and making sure I was hitting my Protein goals. I HAVE HIT A STALL. Not only did I flat out stall. I actually gained a pound. I am 201 now. Weigh in Day is Sunday I am going to be a pound up again! What the heck!?? If I were going to GAIN weight I would sit on the couch and eat twinkies! I certainly wouldn't be dragging myself to the track every night after work! I am on Week 15. Anyone else hitting this? Anybody know how to fix it?

STALL!! STALL STALL STALLLLLL
Thomas CPA replied to LUCYCAT's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stalls happen and gaining a pound here and there once in a while happens. I went up three pounds then started down again. I have lost a whopping 1 1/2 pound in the last three weeks. Sometimes upping the calories gets you out of starvation mode then drop the calories and you lose some weight. Hang in there, you will break the stall soon enough. -
So it's been 10 days since my surgery and I'm down 18.8 lbs from then. Well at least I WAS. Now in like a day I've put back on 4 lbs. Granted I did just start eat the mushy food. Also, I just started my period so it could be Water weight. But either way I'm absolutely FREAKING OUT about putting on the lbs. Did this happen to anyone else? I've never been more depressed about a little weight in my life and I'm feeling completely horrible about myself.

weight loss during pre-op diet
SmokyMtnGal2011 replied to gigi90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please don't set yourself up for disappointment when you stall thinking this surgery is a quick fix to your weight loss. So many people do that and the VSG is a life style change so do not set your goals high and be disappointed. I am going into the VSG knowing this is only a tool and the hard work, determination and success all come from ME. It took 55 years to weigh over 300 lbs and if it takes 1/55th that to lose some I will be very happy. Remember, there are other wins besides the scales. -
Hello all, It's been a long time in coming for me, and I ready - hopefully! for the final battle with my weight. I had my band done in November of 2004 by Dr. Kuri and his team in MX. Lost ~70 lbs, got married, had two gorgeous babies, and somewhere in there my port and tubing broke. 5 1/2 years later, and back to my original weight, I am starting over. Surgery to repair my port and tubing is scheduled for Monday 1/3/11 I am so ready to win this fight - for good.

Just beginning the insurance battle for lap band.
TiffTom posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well, I have IEHP Medical insurance and just found out that they will cover lap band surgery if they deem it to be medically necessary. I'm 28 year old 5' 7 and weigh 267lbs. My BMI is 40.3 and I have chronic high blood pressure, a pace maker and have had congestive heart failure. I have an appointment with my general practitioner this week and will begin Weight Watchers as my 6 months of medically supervised weight loss program. I really want to be approved and don't want to mess anything up. Can anyone who's been banded tell me more about the insurance approval process and if there's anything I can do to ensure I get approved? -
1/2 way through "Options" with Kaiser . . . still on the fence about the sleeve
misspatrice posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all, I just found this site a few days ago. It's great. I like reading about everyone's experiences. I won't make this too long. I'm in southern California and am just in the middle of my pre surgery classes (12 wks long). After that hopefully it won't be too long before the surgery because I swear I change my mind EVERY week! One day I'm all for it, the next I'm convinced I can do it myself. It seems great, quick procedure, few to lil complications, etc but I like to eat and drink at the same time! lol . . . I know it's funny for me to focus on that one thing, but I just don't know. I've lost almost 50 lbs. on my own since last yr. But I keep gaining and losing the same 15lbs. over and over. Well would love to hear stories from those that were skeptical and apprehensive prior to haveing the VSG and who are happy and have no regrets. Also any Kaiser members who have insight about this whole long procedure I'm going through would be nice. Thanks =):biggrin0: -
What is a reasonable weight loss goal for one month? I figured y'all could tell me some of y'all's goals for one month to the next I figure 5-8 lbs.
-
It all depends how heavy you are. People typically lose a lot quicker in the beginning, and as their weight drops, the loss slows a bit. But I think your 5-8 pounds a month is a reasonable and healthy goal.
-
My nutritionist says no starchy carbs until I have lost at least 75% of my excess weight. The only carbs I'm allowed are the carbs naturally found in fruits, veggies and legumes. I'm not to have any bread, rice, pasta or potatoes.

I went for my 3 month surgical followup yesterday and was at 89 lbs, was shooting for 90. But today i went for my 3 month nutrition followup and I had lost another pound so officially down 90 lbs since the week prior to my surgery. Now I had a lot more to lose than most so don't compare your numbers to mine. I would have gladly traded starting weights with most of you. But I am proud of how I've been dedicated to sticking to the plan and seeing the results so quickly has been a great motivator. I've got a lot of achievements just ahead of me...10 more lbs to reach 100 total...20 more lbs to reach half my overall goal...and 51 more lbs to be below 300 for the first time in 12 years. This has been one of the most important decisions I've ever made and so far I have zero regrets.

Time Flies! Six Months Out!
Becca replied to settebee's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
AWESOME....I have the same "aunt" issues! LOL Your weight loss is amazing! Keep it up. -
I'm doing about the same as you and I've only gained about 4 lbs in the last 2 months. I'm not going to sweat it though. Thanksgiving is 10 days away, Xmas is 7 weeks, no need to torture myself over the holidays. I'll just try to make wise decisions when I can and try to avoid the places where excessive sugar lays waiting for me. January 2nd is not that far away and if I can keep my weight where it is, I'll consider it a victory. I typically gain 12 lbs or so every holiday season. Keeping it under 5 would be a moral victory. The band will still be there in January and I'll take full advantage. Happy Holidays! tmf
