Sleeve or bypass
nyseness replied to Carol Blackburn's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree, I also went back and forth but ultimately went with Bypass. I wanted to lose as much as possible and it is gold standard. I seen too many issues w/ the sleevers along with the revisions. -

Adjusting Your Goals and Expectations
Introversion replied to elliekay's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm vertically challenged at 5'1 so my original goal weight was 110 pounds, which would have placed me at a very normal BMI of 20 and into single-digit clothing sizes. At three months post-op I adjusted my goal upward to 130. The weight was coming off at a painfully slow rate of about 5 to 6 pounds monthly, so I thought I'd never make it to my original goal. I reached my revised goal of 130 pounds at 14 months out. My surgery day weight was 218, so I decided to lose a nicely even 100 pounds by getting to a body weight of 118. 118 pounds was my new goal. It took another 4 months to lose the additional 12 pounds to get to 118. I've been maintaining this body weight without a great deal of effort while eating in the ballpark of 2000 calories daily. This is the first time in my adult life I've been weight-stable. I wear a size 4 and enjoy life as a normal-weight person. -
Should I convert from my Lap Band, to the Gastric Sleeve? My band has slipped and not restricting!
general_antiope replied to Chicks56's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm on my second band and planning to move to sleeve. I had the Swedish 4cc band in 2004 and lost 100 lbs easily. It kept leaking - first the tube, then the port. Only gained 20 lbs back and managed to get monthly fills for years that kept emptying but it kept the weight at bay at least. Finally got the port fixed and then got pregnant and boom - the band totally disconnected. When they replaced the band I never got back to that sweet spot and it slips all the time. It's unfilled right now and I cough constantly if I eat more than a cup of food. Cough until I puke. At work. In meetings. But I'm full on hungry with growling and all the old food lust back. Badly slipped. I'm so disappointed. Anyway it's getting removed next week thank god and then I am appealing the insurance denial for a revision. Worst case is that I will switch insurance in November then start the sleeve process. I'm unable to be consistent with food when I'm alone with it without some kind of tool, I accept it about myself. I'm hanging on by my fingernails waiting for all these events to unfold. I'm up another 40 lbs from my lowest to a total of 60 lb gain. Reading these stories keeps me going!!! -
I was approved for the sleeve over two weeks ago by Highmark and when I called as per the instructions I was told the procedures (lap band removal with revision to gastric sleeve was 100% covered. Today I got a call from the hospital that they wanted $2000 co pay that must be paid before the surgery would take place. I have been on the liquid diet for the two weeks and don;t want to have to go through it again so I dug into my savings and paid the hospital. Why couldn't they have gotten it right the first time?

@s_suther what I'm scared and unsure about is whether to have the band removed or a revision or stay the course with it. I'm afraid of not having my "tools" and gaining weight and getting totally out a control. My wife is the only one who has not told me I need to have it removed. I know she supports me either way. The rest of my family doesn'tremember the 120# I lost just the 60# I gained back. It's tough @ get together when you only eat 1 small plate and hear the comments about something being wrong with you. But back when I devoured three plates, I was out of control. It's a catch 22. I know they are well meaning, but it does hurt.

It sounds like your Dr failed you, not that you self destructed. Dr Weiner says you shouldn't even feel your band, they are not supposed to be tight. Anyway good luck. Have you considered a revision from the band to something else? Is your current weight on the site accurate?

Panniculectomy?
Dashofpixiedust8 replied to Dashofpixiedust8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@Sherrie ScharbroughI don't have a lot of weight in my upper stomach. Insurance is paying for mine as well. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience! They are doing a mons lift as well. This is kind of an in between surgery as I am not at goal yet but need this skin taken off now. As long as I don't have a terrible experience I will most likely need a revision tummy tuck that will focus more on shaping. Thank you! @Julie nortonThanks! I'm hopibng it only takes me 10 days to feel better! I don't usually do well after surgery @Suaniya Thank you!! -
I know how you feel being so nervous...! I am too, especially since I am 67 yo. My surgery date is set for July 5 to have my Lapband removed and a revision to gastric bypass. I've had the Lapband almost 6 years and it has caused a lot of problems and has to come out. I don't want to regain the weight, so...

Watching 600 lb Life, Where are they now? And Dr Now just advised to revise to RNY because her WLS stopped, and he said that she stretched her stomach out. So I can see where the misinformation comes from. When the RNY people stop losing at this point, he tells them to stop eating trash. Then after he is done slicing and dicing her for the 2nd time, he says, if her weight loss slows again, we will know it is her diet. Well, no $%#@

Yes, Dr. Nowrazadan operates on these people free of charge. He benefits from the fame and free publicity that the show bestows upon him. Also, the TLC channel profits heavily with all of the viewership and advertisements. So these people display themselves in humiliating positions in exchange for the show's producers financing their year in the sun.

Dr Now got divorced before 600lb life. He had to pay his wife out, he was semi-retired until he had to pay his wife of 27 years. So he got on this TLC gravy train. I really wonder if TLC pays his malpractice insurance because the rates have to be through the roof.
600 pound life is a huge cash cow for TLC.
I wanted to note that Dr Now has them on 1200 calorie diets post-op. Not that 800 that people seem to think is optimal weight loss.
I hate 600 pound life, but watching that and the 2nd season of skin tight gave me a new perspective on my weight loss and my loose skin. I am better off than a lot of people and I should be grateful for my progress.

My level of daily activity has me increasing my calories each week. I am sure I will hit 800 by 4 weeks post-op. If my calories are mainly from protein and healthy fats isn't it a good idea to increase them? I want a healthy metabolism. I don't want to get stuck at consuming such a low number to be able to loss weight.

Anyone regret revising to VSG vs revising to RNY?
adorkbl posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My band was removed 2 years ago after 7 years of issues and complications. I always planned on revising to VSG at some point. Now that the time has come, I am not sure if that is the right choice. Several of my band friends have revised to VSG and the feedback has been less that stellar, with one friend actually telling me she wouldn't do it. I have two friends that have had the RNY and have had good success. But neither of them are a revision. I have a sweet tooth. I have PCOS. I developed GERD with the band. I have 230 pounds to lose. All reasons to lean towards RNY. I am just more comfortable with VSG for some reason. RNY still scares the bejeezes out of me. But I don't want to make another colossal mistake like I did with the band. I am concerned that the scarring from the band will affect results with the VSG. My surgeon recommends RNY for me. Anyway, long post to basically ask: Do you regret revising to VSG and wish you had done RNY? Your reasons? If you are happy with your revision to VSG, did scarring from the band affect your new journey? Sent from my Samsung S6 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had the lap and in 2011 and initially had success, but about a year ago I began gaining weight back. I am heavier now than before my surgery. I am looking at Dr. Green in Tijuana, Mexico (Florence Hospital) for my revision. I just wonder if anyone else has used him or this hospital. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I find myself making a correction to my weight loss journey. I originally chose the Lapband because I thought it would be a better fit for me. I really didn't think this through. I wasn't told about the very long needle used to fill the band. I am terribly afraid of needles. You see my problem with this. I also encountered a Nurse practioner that was brutal and injured my esophagus, eating was had enough. I have chosen the sleeve to alleviate the hunger cravings. I will have enough problems controlling my chocolate cravings.

High Rate of Revisions for Lap Band Surgery
Jengo825 replied to James Marusek's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Same here. My Lapband has been, and still is, a nightmare, until my revision on July 5th. I've never been able to eat the 1 cup unless it was a slider. I would get deathly I'll on most solid foods after chewing well, small bites, right foods, etc. Finally, I had a test with my gastro and my stomach was inflamed, opening from pouch to stomach closed, esophagitis, gastritis, ulcers, and a slipped band (probably from throwing up for the last 6 years! I hate this thing! Oh, and I only lost 30 lbs. Revising to RNY so I don't gain it back. I'm very nervous about having this done, because of my age, but I really don't have a choice at this point. -
Dr. Ariel Ortiz in Tijuana, Mexico is top notch. Just had revision from band to vsg last week. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using BariatricPal mobile app

stories
PatientEleventyBillion replied to Deactivatedfatgal's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Stories from one individual are merely anecdotal. As far as anecdotal evidence goes, a more accurate presentation of surgery complications comes from health experts (doctors/surgeons/etc) who've performed surgeries, revisions, or dealt with post-op complications. With the slew of people you're bound to meet, ask questions and document answers to go back to in situations of anxiety. And the best evidence are studies where they either access large swaths of people by getting consent for their information, so direct studies, and/or accumulating non-personal data from doctors who input general data into a collective system for analysis. That's why before I had the surgery done I made sure to talk to as many people as I could (particularly specialists who've dealt with bariatric surgery scenarios and those with specific diseases/comorbidities that cater to their specialty) and ask as many questions as possible, read as many studies as possible to get a sense of what is normal, what to expect, what the clinical odds of things happening are.. so I would have a direct source of information that didn't come from internet gossip. I am a hypochondriac as well, and if I didn't keep myself away from these stories, I'd have gone nuts and likely affected my ability to get the surgery. -
SCHEDULED ... but not until August [emoji17]
revengebody🙌🏽 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ok so I finally got my revision scheduled after my insurance making an approval 3 weeks ago! I was told the only available date they gave open is august 21 [emoji30] how depressing!!! My doctor told me it would only be a couple weeks out from my last appointment!!! How long did everyone wait for surgery after your insurance had approved of the surgery!?! I was SOOOOO ready for it and to be feeling better by the end of summer!!! Now I'm so upset no clothes or bathing suits fit me and I hate to buy more only knowing they won't last long, well hopefully lol -

hopeliveshere posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi all! was sleeved back on 11-12-13. Sw 257lbs, Reached goal of 150 at 14 months out (January 2015)....got pregnant literally less than a week later. Baby girl is almost 2 now. Since my surgery I have suffered from reflux and its gotten continually worse to the point I feel like my inside are literally on fire. I also have no restriction whatsoever since my pregnancy and have managed to get back up to 185. I had an esophagram done may 5th and my surgeon wants to revise me to RNY sometime this month. They have already submitted to my insurance and I am just waiting for my approval. I am nervous and excited all at the same time. so happy to get relief from the reflux and get back on track . Im wondering what to expect with a revision. Will I lose a lot more weight? -

I will be going for a revision. on my case status on my health insurance website it say anticipated admission. does that mean I am approved? also has a date of 6/19/17

Insurance hoops are a PITA, if spending $5k- $6k is do-able, you (*probably) won't regret going with Dr. Illan. Surgery was the best vacation I think I've ever had! *probably is because everyone is so different, and every procedure. Revisions can have tougher recoveries than virgin procedures.. but after the first couple days things get better. Those photos of people enjoying Tijuana after surgery are real. Many of the people shown are family of the patients, but it's the real deal! It's hard to tell which had surgery and which didn't!

I'm sorry to hear about this, it sounds very painful I don't have any experience with this, so can't help much. Would it be possible to just undo this surgery, let you heal and gain a few pounds back, and revise to a bypass later if you needed it?

Why did you pick this surgery?
Jengo825 replied to Cali_love89's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When did you have your revision to rny? I hope you are feeling much better. Mine is scheduled for July 5. I'm very nervous about the surgery and what to expect post op pain, and if eating will be easier, and my age. It's not a choice anymore it's a necessity - inflammation, band slip, closed opening to stomach, esophagitis, and gastritis. Surgeon took out all of the fill until surgery and that helped. -
Revision to what?
