Unflavored protein powder?
Corridor72 replied to nessa259's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I bought unflavored protein powder prior to my surgery and never really used it because it was awful. And I'm pretty much ok with most protein powders. I could NOT do the unflavored though. I tried it in oatmeal, applesauce, greek yogurt, crystal light and I just couldn't stomach it. I ended up tossing it in the trash. -
Hard time with Hubby Post Op
HDScarlett replied to jcb123's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre/post op liquid phase is very difficult, but you will get thru it!! My fiance offered to eat dinner before he came home at night so he would not "bother" me (one reason why I love this man so much), and I said "No". I didn't want him to alter his life in anyway - this is my journey. We have had a few struggles (like pizza night - his favorite food), and ordering when we go out to restaurants, but I have learned to adjust and plan. Like when we take road trips, he runs thru a drive thru - I pack a mini cooler with protein shakes, yogurt and cottage cheese. If you don't, you could end up in trouble eating something that is not good. When he is on the couch eating cheese and crackers (his nightly 8pm snack), he brings me a sugar free popsicle which is one of my "go to's". Re the pizza thing, I eat the toppings, or I eat something else. And cooking is a breeze because we grill allot. When we go out, I drink a protein shake before we go and then have a bite of his food, or order soup. If he has a problem with any of this, he doesn't tell me (and if he did, that's on him). Ooooo the best thing happened when we were going to dinner at a family members house who loves to feed people. I was worried, and my fiance came up with a plan that was genius. I ate before we went , and we each took a plate for the buffet. He put half of the food he wanted on his plate, and I put the other half of what HE wanted on mine. He then ate everything on his, and then started eating off my plate. Hahahaha. Nobody said a thing! Keep in mind that people who do not struggle with weight issues don't get it! He was probably not even aware how hard this is on you. -
Full fat, low-fat, or fat-free?
SerendipityHappens replied to kjordan83's topic in Food and Nutrition
It all depends. I make my own salad dressings and use REAL olive oil or REAL homemade MAYO.. but then I cut it with avocado or salsa or something else so overall there's a lot of dressing.. but less fat than dressings made the traditional way. I use full fat cheese. I EAT THE chicken SKIN.. (but only my OWN chicken skin off of my ONE chicken leg) I use half and half in my coffee.. 2T every morning. For cottage cheese I use 1% because that's the kind I like the best. I make my own yogurt and I like it with whole milk the best. I like a lot of fat in my diet and I account for it in my calories. It's REALLY easy to go crazy with too many calories if you're doing full-fat everything so just be careful how many calories you're getting -
Feb 2017 sleevers - how's everyone doing post-op?
ApplevsOrange replied to biginjapan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all! I was sleeved 2/28. I am feeling better, only having mild tummy pain when sitting up from a bed or chair. I am going on regular walks and enjoying Greek yogurt on my full liquid diet! My favorite protein shakes are premier protein or muscle milk banana creme. I am 12 days post op and down 18 pounds from surgery. I am so grateful for my new tool! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk -
I start pureeds next week for 2 weeks. I'm looking for any good pureed recipes. I'm not interested in baby food. I've got fat free refried Beans and I plan to blend that with salsa and then put in microwave with chedder cheese and to top with tblsp of plan greek yogurt. I'm thinking of blending some of my favorite Soups, but for some reason we're not allowed anything with corn so it's been hard to find soups without corn in them. Does anyone have any good recipes they used?

I am usually in the 90+ range. I eat three small meals per day, always Protein first but usually including something else such as green veggies or dried fruit. I do have one or two protein shakes per day. I also use Greek yogurt as a snack. Besides a little fresh fruit at the end of the day, the only Snacks I allow myself are protein shakes and Greek yogurt. It doesn't bother me because I am that weirdo who really likes protein shakes! I did a lot of experimenting with different brands to find my favorites (unjury, Jay Robb, Chike, Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard, Syntrax Matrix). I also do a lot of doctoring up protein shakes with different Torani syrups, sugar free pudding mixes, Sweetleaf Sweetdrops flavors, PB2, extracts, Crystal Light -- anything I can think of! So instead of having a plain vanilla or chocolate shake, I might have a white chocolate lemon ginger shake, a peanut brittle shake, or a chocolate chip cookie dough shake. This afternoon I'm going to try out a new shake recipe I cobbled together from a few different ones I found on the internet: --carb master milk + vanilla Protein Powder + mint extract + peppermint syrup + pistachio pudding mix + pinch xanthan gum + green food coloring = "Shamrock Shake" - protein style! ETA - drinking the Shamrock Shake now and I think next time I'll try it without the pistachio pudding. It's good but the mix of pistachio and mint is a little weird tbh.

I drink a shake every morning so I start the day with 20 gm of Protein, usually add fruit to the vanilla shakes 3 times a week. lunch is an average of 15-20 gms from meat with veggies. I have an afternoon snack of cheese or cottage cheese/yogurt mix (about 10 gm of protein) dinner I try to get another shake in unless I am with friends, then I try to get 15-20 gm from meat then veggies. So I average 60-70 gm of protein daily

Post Adjustment Tightness
Kari D replied to Kari D's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the feedback ya'll! I just got off the phone with the doc. He did not seemed concerned at all. He said what I was experiencing was normal sensation and actually the restriction I'm feeling is what they're looking for. He said if I'm not happy with the feeling they can always take some out. The challenge is that being new to this, I am not yet keen to the different post fill sensations. So far, I've had a Protein shake and a yogurt and I'm not feeling hungry at all. Who am I!? -
We are still here JWMe. This forum is one constant in my life. Let us know how it is going. I care! My band has a mind of its own and has decided it is too tight.... Tried liquids, yogurt, resetting. No go Although I love being in my smallest size pants, it appears an unfill is due and that means more pounds. However it also means not being fearful food won't agree with me.. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY. To each of us. Kids ,dogs ,cats whatever depends on you... It is a special day. Hope you enjoy it. For me. All I want is an unfill weds.

Every plan is different, sweetie. And you really need to follow the plan. As others have said eggs can be hard on your new tum--I think part of it is the yolk? I never had any issues with them, but I didn't have many issues progressing and I went from liquids to fork tender mushies rather than purees. But I do think VSGs are different cuz the pouch & incision is so long in the active part of the stomach. With an RNY the the remnant stomach isn't exposed to needing to churn food around. It will pass quickly. I promise! Focus on other things rather than food during this time. Easier said than done. But having said that, you could always call or email with your RD and ask to be advanced. I use a method from Tony Bourdain only instead of adding sour cream, I add Fage Greek Nonfat Yogurt to soft eggs while scrambling them slowly. And I mix it in. That way they cook, but stay super creamy and go down very easily! When the eggs are halfway done, add the yogurt and stir it in, then season it. Yum. Now I want those for breakfast! I also love soft boiled eggs and savory and sweet egg custard! I also use a lot of Real Egg Whites and poach them and they are a very soft, tofu consistency. You can always blend up egg drop soup too. But call or email your RD first!!!!

On puree's I ate mostly greek yogurt lots of protein there, cottage cheese, sugar free pudding and Jello, Protein shakes and scrambled eggs of course. I did try some flakey fish towards the end of my puree stage and chewed it like it was nobody's business lol. It went down fine. My NUT just says to be mindful of my Water intake, don't miss any Vitamin dose and try to get protein in, she said there is no way with my tiny tummy I could expect to meet hard and fast goals at this point. So far so good!

Canned tuna is one of the ideal foods for WLS patients. It has 70 calories and 14 grams of Protein per serving, not to mention that it’s carb-free and full of omega-3 fatty acids. Plus, in a world where it can be tough to put together a nutritious meal because it takes too long, canned tuna is a perfect solution that can sit in your pantry for whenever you need it. But there is a potential drawback: it can get awfully boring if you have it plain day in, day out. Traditional mayo-laden tuna salad and fat and carb laden tuna noodle casserole are non-starters for WLS patients…so how do you prepare your tuna to be delicious and healthy? Share your recipes here, please! We could all use some tuna tips. If you’re not into tuna or your best protein recipe uses something else, please share that recipe, too! Whether it’s chicken breast, Beans, smoked mussels, Greek yogurt, or another healthy protein, we definitely want to hear how you make it even more delicious while keeping it healthy.

Tuna Time! Share Your Protein Recipes Here!

I'm a big tuna fan, and get around the mayo issue by subbing in either greek yogurt (Fage 0%) or a bit of avocado. With the Nutribullet, it is easy to whip up a quick dressing to mix into the tuna. My husband doesn't really diet much, and he loves these like crazy. I'm bad with recipes, but here's a couple ideas...feel free to play with amounts to fit your preferences! For kimchi tuna salad: Quarter avocado 1 tsp gojuchang juice of half a lime One or two scallions depending on size or preference 1 tsp sherry vinegar 1 hunk fresh ginger Teeny splash (TEENY TINY) toasted sesame oil Blend those ingredients and mix into 2 cans tuna and 1 cup chopped kimchi (cabbage is best for this) and diced celery. Top with sesame seeds! Zaatar tuna salad: 1/2 cup greek yogurt (Fage 0%) 1 tsp EVOO Juice of 1 lemon (and zest if you're feeling zesty) 1 clove garlic 1 or 2 sprigs of dill 2 tbsp parsley 1 tbsp zaatar seasoning (more or less depending on how you like it) optional: a little zchug, a kind of hot pepper paste! Combine ingredients and blend. Toss with 2-3 cans tuna, 1 cup diced cucumber and 1/2 cup shredded carrot. You can top with a little bit of feta cheese! -
Try Greek yogurt with sugar free jam or jelly to cut out the carbs that fruit has and it's easier to digest without the chunks of fruit and fewer calories

Is there something wrong with my sleeve?
plumptofrump replied to AdrianaNaji's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 8 days post op and I am a little worried that I too do not have any problem with water and 6 oz of yogurt go down just fine. I hope that the full feeling will kick in when I eat solid food again. -
Kinda scared..problems with sleeve

You definitely sound dehydrated and undernourished. Have you tried Syntrax nectar Protein? They are like koolaid so they may not fill you up as much as the milk-based shakes do. They come in variety of flavors. 2 scoops in 32 oz Water would give you 40g protein you could sip on all day. Add in a couple cups of decaf herbal tea (warm liquids went down better for me), another couple cups of water and you've got your fluids in. Try adding unflavored Protein powder to some Soups. They may not fill you up like dense Proteins do, so you can get more in. Plain Greek yogurt flavored with vanilla protein powder would give you a big protein boost, too. I had to sip all day long from the moment I Woke up till the minute I went to bed. I never didn't have a water bottle in my hand and I rarely ate/drank anything that didn't contain protein. And I did not go to bed until I got my 64 oz and 60+g. You have to make these a priority. They are WAY more important than excercise at this point. -
This is going to sound so obvious it's stupid but please do try your best not to vomit AT ALL between now and your surgery date. If you have a slip and a lot of inflammation they may not be able to revise you to a sleeve at the same time as band removal. You need for all the swelling to go down in order to have a safe revision. Risks are already triple for a revision vs. if you never had a band. Swelling makes it much worse. Milk and yogurt? (eye roll)

I'm 7/8ish months out, doing well, but in the past month or so I am noticing a trend, as you can figure out from my name I'm a nurse and every single day I'm at work (and only when I'm at work) I get extremely dizzy/light headed around 8/9 AM while I am standing, doing my med pass. I took my BP, it was normal, and I always eat breakfast a few hours before. Today I might do a finger stick to see if something strange is going on with my blood sugar but that would be shocking considering I'm not diabetic and I eat very well in the morning. Usually some greek yogurt, coffee and some cheese or something like that.

I agree. Regular yogurt is just icky now. I stick with greek yogurt as well. If I want to add sweetness, I just add sugar free pudding powder, or sugar free syrups to sweeten it up. I still use it for all recipes that call for sour cream. I rarely buy sour cream anymore.

Protein shakes (doctored to taste a bit better), sf jell-o, tomato Soup, yogurt. lots of Water, plenty of exercise. i take a chewable Fiber supplement to keep things moving. it's really important to stay hydrated...that'll keep your bowels moving.

Plain yogurt = *gag*... Help!
BeagleLover replied to MamaTo3inNH's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Just google "recipe" and "raita" for Indian savory recipes using yogurt. You can add roasted or cooked veggies, or fresh cucumber + spices (not necessarily hot ones) and it helps to wet your food and provide extra Protein. It helps to make it a few hours before you eat it because the flavors need time to meld.
