    August surgery buddies!

    Howdy! My prop goal weight was 230 and that was set by me. I wanted to maximize the weight loss of the surgery as much as possible since I wanted to lose over 100 lbs. My doctor only requires 2 weeks liquid diet prior to my surgery date on Aug 18 the. I wanted to get a headstart, play with recipes, and establish new habits so there wouldn't be a ton of changes at once. This way I can monitor how we'll the fiber is working too. I suffer from constipation and I want to ensure I can do everything to avoid any complications. The Organic Plum Stage 1 baby food is a total WIN because they have yummy prunes plus protein and fiber!!

    What’s your pre-op weight goal? Is this something the doctor asks for or something you want? How is it determined? (I have so many questions. Lol. Sorry!) My diet is all liquids with only 1 Greek yogurt,1 egg or 1 jello a day allowed (as a non-liquid) so I keep going back and forth on starting 1 week early.

    Thank you for posting this!!!! I've been considering going to an all liquid diet early to hit my pre-op weight goal. I have a check-in with my dietician next Monday and I need to lose 4 pounds by then. Are you doing anything special with the jello for dinner or just preparing it like normal?     Almost there

    You've had such amazing weight loss! You may get to that goal by October but don't beat yourself up if you don't. Just keep following your plan and you will succeed. I have had to come to terms with not getting to my ideal goal weight. I started out so big and had a lot to lose, so I knew I may never get there even though I'd like to. I'm still technically in the obese category, even though I wear a size medium or large and I feel amazing and am healthy now, so I focus on those things, because the reason I did this was to get my life and health back. I can't let the number on the scale make me feel bad when I feel so great! Focus on all the a amazing progress you made so far. You have done a wonderful job!     I hear you on the waist being too big! I know when I've been this weight at a younger age my waist was smaller. What a drag it is getting old. Lol I feel pretty good with what I'm eating but I do notice I'm a little more hungry than I was the first year and a half or so, which I feel like is a signal that I'm ready for maintenance.   7. I have heard on here that the weight loss is definitely slower after revision than the first time around. And it can sometimes be less than the initial surgery. But everyone experiences super slow loss those last few pounds.

    Almost there

    Congrats on your fabulous loss so far, you have done amazing in such a short time. Shooting for a goal weight is good but if you cant achieve it, don't be down hearted. It may affect your progress. Just keep working your plan and see where you get to. It must become obvious when we get to our set point. I am a little bothered by the 20lb bounce back at 3 years out that people have talked about.

    Just climbed Kilimanjaro!

    Hi Tek, The hike itself was pretty amazing. I did an 8 day Lemosha route - the longer route allowed for greater acclimatization to the altitude which caps out around 19,500 ft on Summit day. Most days we hiked between 5-8 miles with lots of elevation gain --- hike high and sleep low. You pass through 5 different climate zones, from cloud forest to artic, so each day looked a little different. You are camping, so tent sleeping in mummy bags the whole trip which was it's own challenge. Summit day was definitely the hardest. They like to have you hike it at night, so they woke us up at midnight to eat a little something (you are already at 15,500 ft so not much of an appetite) then start hike around 1:30 am. It's cold --- I think when we went it was around 15 F and windy as you get higher. It's only a little over 3 miles, but due to the steep climb and elevation, we didn't reach the summit until around 8 AM and we were a pretty fast group. The sunrise on the mountain was just beautiful (see pic). Once you reach summit you stay just long enough to get pics, then they hurry you as they don't want you at that elevation for too long. The climb down was really hard --- you are already tired and it's steep and hard on the joints even with hiking poles. Once you hit base camp, you rest then hike down further. I think we did another 6 miles and stayed at high camp that day. Last day was about 7 miles down which was again pretty hard on the joints, but at that point you just want a shower and a bed so it's not too hard to push yourself. I was fortunate to be able to stay in Tanzania and do some safari's and go to Zanzibar to relax on the beach for a few days before coming home. Definitely a once in a lifetime trip. In terms of training, I did lots of local hikes, but I'm in Northern California so while I could do distance (10+ miles) elevation was hard. So in addition I joined a gym about 4 months before the hike and started taking weight training type classes and yoga classes to build strength and stamina. Then after the hour class I would do an hour on the treadmill at a 12-15 incline. I feel like I was in pretty solid shape for the hike.
  10. Hi 👋 Now I know that my own “team” should have helped me with this. But they didn’t. Now that the world is a smaller place and consultations can happen online, does anyone have names of *reliable/responsible *well educated and certified Psychologists especially for us bariatric surgery patients? I didn’t see anyone pre-surgery and I know that I need to both address why I got so big - and - how to get over those issues - and - how to keep losing now. All of us have limited money, right?! I hate the idea of spending my kid’s college money (which is what any extra money we manage to save ultimately is), on a psychologist who sees one patient like me in a lifetime and has to look everything up before I get to her and after I leave. You know what I mean? It also can’t drag on forever.. I just don’t have the means to be going for more than six months or so. Ideas for across the globe welcomed ❤️ Xx Lorna
  11. On 2/15/22 I underwent revision from VSG to RNY due to hiatal hernia and reflux issues. My surgery weight was around 230 lbs, actually a few less due to three days of liquid diet. In the 5 months since revision surgery I've lost about 40 lbs, but have been at a steady weight for over five weeks. I'm currently around 15 to 20 lbs away from my final goal. I had a post surgery follow up with the surgeons office and they just suggested I try to stay closer to the dietary guidelines. I probably was a little short on protein but in the couple weeks since have worked diligently to increase protein and reduce carbs. Yet the scale hasn't moved. Looking for experiences from others who had revision without a large amount of weight to lose. How did it go for you? Is this just a stall or my new normal? Should I expect to continue to lose, or am I pretty much at my new set point after five months?

    Loose skin vs. abdominal fat

    Weirdly, my waist has now gone up to 34 inches. I can't figure out if I was measuring wrong before or if I'm measuring wrong now... or if there's something else going on that is a problem. I am not pregnant, and I haven't lost/gained any weight since.

    ESG post diet

    You will always loose weight with a calorie deficit. When you get to soft foods, and really for quite a while after that you will stay in a pretty large calorie deficit and continue to loose weight. As you get closer to your goal weight the calorie deficit lessons, and your weight loss will slow down. Don't worry, follow your plan and you will not gain weight.
  14. I had my bypass surgery on December 2 2021 and had set a goal to reach my goal weight by my birthday day on October 8th. I started at 290 goal weight is 160. And I have lost 114 lbs bringing down to 176. I have 16lbs to go in just under 3 months. But I'm nervous about the time line of reaching it on time. I had heard the last 15 are the hardest to loose. I'm worried I'm not going to get there in time. I haven't really had a stall or anything. I mean I can go back and forth on the weekends but usually by Monday or Tuesday I'm back to the same or less than Friday but that's it. I'm wondering if most people have issues with the last 15lbs.     Congrats on your tremendous success! I'm exactly 10 months out from surgery today, and my weight has been pretty stalled for the last few months. I know I COULD eat less, but I often don't feel like I have the mental bandwidth to think about every calorie. I eat between 1200-1800 calories a day. I'm the same height and have gotten as low as 159.8, but I've been about 160-163 recently. I'd be happy to stay here. I'm also in a size medium. I feel like if I could eat the way I eat now and stay this weight for the rest of my life, I'd be thrilled... except that my waist is too big! It seems to be getting bigger, which is so odd.
  16. Hi, had ESG 6/29 and although it went very smoothly and I feel great, I have been crabby about liquid diet. I have been HUNGRY. I tried to find research about the healing process and justification for the full liquid diet for 2 weeks after ESG, but can't find anything at all. It just seems as though we are following more or less the same protocol as post-bariatric surgery, although I think the trauma to the stomach and healing period should call for something significantly less drastic. Especially since I am doing so well. Nonetheless, I have stuck with it, with the exception of allowing myself some hummus. I've lost a modest 8 pounds, but who wouldn't with no food and about 500 calories a day for 16 days! Now, my big concern is that of course I will gain weight after switching to a soft diet even if I follow it precisely, which will really be demoralizing. It's all had me rather irritable and I'm so curious to know others' experiences along this line.

    Just starting my journey

    Yes, for me it felt like it was happening fast, but then it felt like I had to wait forever! It took me 7.5 months to have surgery - I had to jump through all the insurance hoops and then my surgery center was backed up from surgeries they had to cancel due to COVID. What I did was work to practice eating like after surgery - counting calories, higher protein, lower carbs, etc. I lost 50 lbs before surgery, which is weight I didn't have to lose after surgery.

    I'm particularly impressed by your weight loss during your second year! I'm not familiar with the Loop DS procedure, but in my case (gastric bypass), it became very difficult to lose weight after the first year and I had to start watching my food intake pretty carefully--so you are clearly doing something right. I had a 20-pound regain fairly quickly in maintenance (the beginning of the second year). However, I actually lost too much during the first year and needed to gain about 15 pounds so I didn't look so skeletal. (Sorry.) I have found maintenance pretty easy by sticking basically to a high-protein, low-carb, low-fat diet. If you are getting 100 grams of protein a day, that's great! You can definitely eat more that 1300 calories without gaining weight. However, it really can be terrifying after eating so little for so long. As someone mentioned, it really is trial and error. I'm able to eat some sugar, have an occasional glass of wine and high-carb treat without too much trouble. You are clearly very disciplined, and you know your own body better than anyone. You'll figure it out. Good luck!

    Losing mind battle

    I agree with sleevesk about the therapist. A lot of people swear that they help so much. I wish I could find someone near me who specializes in disordered eating. I am 16 months post op and got down to my easy goal but not my dream goal. I am on medications that can cause some weight gain so they warned me that may happen. I would’ve been happy enough to maintain there but now I am dealing with some life stress and a medication change and my weight is already starting to creep back up. Not trying to scare you but I am an emotional eater and I know that this would’ve been easier if I had the tools that are learned in therapy. I say you have come this far, may as well do whatever you can to set yourself up for long term success.

  21. So I saw my surgeon today for my six month appointment.. I can't BELIEVE it's been 2 years since my surgery. My life has changed so much for the better in so many wonderful ways. Anyway, I'm about to start maintenance. I figured I was close to finished with weight loss because it's been pretty slow for a while, and I feel good and happy with the 205 I have lost. Most of my weight was lost the first year. I have lost 42 since this time last summer, and most of that l lost in those first 6 months. The dietitian recommended I start adding 50 to 100 calories a week of carbs or fat. I currently eat 1300 calories a day. I usually get about 100 of protein (I had the Loop DS). So I'm supposed to start adding gradually to get my calories as high as I can without gaining. I'm excited but SO nervous. I know people have a 10 to 20 lb. rebound gain quite often and I really want to stay as close to my weight now as possible. I weigh 187. I'm 5'3" so that's still pretty much for height but considering I started at 393 I'm pretty happy. I wear a size medium or large which I'm thrilled with. I never cared about being skinny. I have always been a curvy person. I just wanted my health and life back, which I have! But I would like to stay under 200 pounds, so I don't have a lot of room for gaining any back.     May Surgery Buddies

    I thought I would tell a little about my journey. 7 years ago (July 5, 2015) I had a rare bilateral cerebellar stroke. There are lots of things that come along with that (fatigue-mine got minimally better. For me a lot of cognitive, psychiatric and physical defecits. I am now disabled.) I was already overweight (my stroke was not due to this) but after the stroke I went from working over 8 hours 5x per week to barely awake (especially for the 1st year after). I gained 60 lbs the year after my stroke & no matter how much I tried I couldn't lose any. I have difficulty with exercise, stamina, central vertigo (I puke a lot), dealing with body temp differences (if I am hot I puke). So it is a challenge. I am 50 but 43 when I had my stroke. My Neurologist talked to me about considering weight loss surgery. I said absolutely not 3 years ago; but, I decided last year I had to do something. I am too young... I'm not ready to possibly die an early death due to a 2nd stroke. So I started my journey to see if I could qualify and if Medicare would cover the surgery. I would say it took about 4-6 months for my insurance to approve surgery and so I began to embark on getting ready for S day. I started at 284 lbs and lost down to 263 the day of my surgery (gastric bypass). It has certainly not been an easy journey... fear, pain, huge adjustments. I had my surgery May 23rd, 2022. Today, I am so much better after surgery. Now the real work begins. I am now 228.2 lbs and my body can feel the positive of this all over. I am all in. I want to take my health by the horns and even shock myself. I am certainly a loner (anxiety with panic attacks and continued PBA-pseudobulbar affect also known as emotional lability) socially I suppose I am more of a hermit now. No more social butterfly but I have accepted the me now and love myself. One thing I am struggling with now is taking my meds all crushed 🤢. I am waiting on my order of vitamins and minerals from BariatricPal so until they get here I am taking regular over the counter stuff per my Dr's instruction. The iron pill (crushed with a little crystal lite sprinkled on top) is absolutely disgusting! I dry heave after I take it. I dread doing it. 🙄 How are you guys doing?
  23. Hi Everyone! I had my surgery in March 2022. I am about 4 months post op and have lost 36% of my weight since my last doc visit. I have talked to my doctor about how I dread eating because of how it makes me feel afterwards. I feel exhausted, my body feels weak and gross. I am more than grateful to myself for having the surgery but the discomfort after eating meals makes me dread eating. I try to eat 3 times a day but the feeling after eating has made me go to a graze type period where i have a few almonds every few hours & I even dread eating the almonds. Another thing I have is this dry clenching of the stomach as if its a desert trying to suck any fluids into it. I thought the clenching feeling may be due to dehydration but I have been monitoring my urine color to make sure I am hydrated. I even drink water or tea when I have that feeling but it still stays with me. The thing that has helped me tolerate eating is having an edible but then if I have an edible and get high i tend to eat a little too much so I am trying to figure out why I am having this body feeling after eating..... Is my body in starvation mode or is this just a side effect? I thought it may be due to not chewing my food up long enough but I have read that will make you feel nauseated - I never feel nauseated after eating. I would love to avoid eating all together but I know my body needs energy........ Any advice, similar stories or suggestions would be greatly appreciated - just trying to figure out what to do to avoid the feeling and to have a healthy relation with food

    August surgery buddies!

    My husband recently had a partial foot amputation due to diabetes so we are both following a diabetic plan that reduces carbs and increases protein. Just being very mindful of what we are eating and how it affects his blood sugar. I figured it would be good to get into the habit of eating in a more healthy way now, rather than after the surgery. I'm not exercising right now. I'd love to, but hubby is still non-weight bearing and on a pic line so most of my time when I'm not at work is taken up with taking care of him. Hoping to get the go-ahead for weight-bearing tomorrow as well as ending his IV antibiotics, so I'm hoping to start getting some walking in.

    6/22/22 - I received a call from the surgeon’s office that they got the go ahead from the insurance. I was instructed that I would need to complete some on-line courses, sign some paperwork and pay the $400 co-pay, prior to scheduling the surgery. I was able to print, sign and scan the paperwork and send back via e-mail. I took the online courses, which rehashed almost everything I’ve been told to date. My patient navigator says she had everything and will be moving my chart to the scheduling office and that scheduling will reach out to me within a few days. More waiting... 6/23/22 - Thankfully the scheduling office called back this afternoon and finally, we can schedule surgery. July 14th is the day I get my sleeve. I do not have a pre-op diet plan, although the day before surgery is to be clear liquid only. 7/11/22 - I went to the surgical center for my pre-op appointment. They did an EKG, Chest x-ray and took a few tubes of blood. No one told me to fast and no one asked me if I fasted, so hopefully they won’t have issues with my blood samples, since I had a few beers on Sunday. My weight is up from the weekend, but I am planning to be good for the next three days. Now that I'm caught up, I guess my next post will be on my surgery day.
