  1. I have the same doctor as Grommie and she is right. I had to do 10 days of pure liquid diet and no protein. It is hard but i am on day 8 now and i am not hungry at all and can handle watching my kids eat and even cook for them. That was the biggest challenge as I always would "test" the food before i would serve it. I have lost 20 lbs in the last 8 days.
  2. Just stick to your plan. i had about a 10 day stall and it broke and i dropped 5 pounds out of nowhere. EVERYONE STALLS. Its all part of it. But stick to your plan and all will go well. Youve got this!!!
  3. You're doing spectacular! I was 10/22/19 and I'm at 48 pounds since then. I've been told that was awesome and there's no way I'll get to 70 at 2 months so you're kicking my butt! Fill out your surgery profile so we know starting weights, surgery weights and what type you had!

    December Surgery dates???

Super anxious my surgery is on December 10 and my PCP office messed up my clearance to fax to the hospital NYU who will doing the VSG. I’m sitting in the office right now. super anxious but very surprised my blood pressure was good lol. I can’t to another two weeks of liquid diet. Plus my family arrange time off to help with my daughter and me. Ugh so nervous if it gets postponed to January. Please cross your fingers that I get everthing done. Speedy recovery for the one that got surgery recently or will be having it soon.

    Feeling so depressed

I am so sorry about them cancelling your appointment. I'd be pretty interested to know what the nutritionist will do in person that they can't do over the phone. Do you think you could call in and ask to speak directly to your nutritionist/e-mail your nutritionist rather than a scheduler? If you can, I'd make it clear you feel ready to move to soft foods and feel the emotional impacts of staying on pureed for another month could be detrimental to your progress/emotional health. I'd let them know you will do a phone conversation if they feel you absolutely must talk to them before advancing, but if they cannot accommodate that, you will be advancing as your stomach feels ready. Not as mean as I'm making it sound, but just in a I'm going to advocate for myself kind of way. And to be completely honest, if I weren't having any discomfort with foods, I'd just progress myself if that is the next step in their typical routine. I also had bypass on 10/24 and I'm already cleared for normal foods, so I can't imagine staying on pureed for another month or so. You've already lost more than me and I'm on my second stall where I'm just floating in between the same 1 pound difference, so I hope you don't get too down on your progress so far!

  8. Also, please make your surgeon and RD clarify what they mean by "ounces." This was one of the MOST confusing things to me and it aggravated me no end! I don't honestly even know if THEY understand the confusion they cause! VOLUME is king in our world. Most often, when docs and RDs refer to "ounces" in the very early days post surgery, they are talking BY VOLUME and FLUID measurement. That means roughly we should aim for these volumes. People will swing either 1 step up or down on the time scale for volume. In early days when real estate is totally at a premium, we concentrate and fill that volume with protein first. As we mature, we can handle other things in addition to meeting our protein goals. When dealing with dense, solid PROTEIN in the progressing phases, it's important to go by weight, but it still needs to fit within the VOLUME limit for the meal. And this is where it gets tricky cuz 1oz BY VOLUME does NOT equal 1 oz by weight. That's why I still weigh my protein into a measuring cup first so that I know I get my protein needs met and don't exceed my 1 cup per meal volume prescription for my forever diet: BY VOLUME: 1-2 weeks post op: 1 oz by volume = 2 tbsp of food = 1/8 cup by volume = 1 medicine cup of volume 2 oz by volume = 4 tbsp of food = 1/4 cup by volume 3-4 weeks post op: 3 oz by volume = 6 tbsp of food = approx 1/3 cup by volume 4 oz by volume = 8 tbsp of food = 1/2 cup by volume 5-8 weeks post op: 5 oz by volume = 10 tbsp of food = approx 2/3 cup by volume 9-12 weeks post op: 6 oz by volume = 12 tbsp of food = 3/4 cup by volume 13 weeks to forever post op: 7 oz by volume = 14 tbsp of food = approx 7/8 cup by volume 8 oz by volume = 16 tbsp of food = 1 cup by volume BY WEIGHT: 1 oz by WEIGHT = 28.35g by WEIGHT METRIC = 1/4 cup by volume (approx) = approx 7g of protein by macro/cooked 2 oz by WEIGHT = 57g by WEIGHT METRIC = 1/2 cup by volume (approx) = approx 14g of protein by macro/cooked 3 oz by WEIGHT = 85g by WEIGHT METRIC = 3/4 cup by volume (approx) = approx 21g of protein by macro/cooked 4 oz by WEIGHT = 113g by WEIGHT METRIC = 1 cup by volume (approx) = approx 28g of protein by macro/cooked 1 oz by WEIGHT = 28.35g by WEIGHT METRIC = 1/8 cup by volume (approx) for veggies cooked al dente 2 oz by WEIGHT = 57g by WEIGHT METRIC = 1/4 cup by volume (approx) for veggies cooked al dente

Not really a rant but just frustrating

Even during transition, get a supportive, well fitting bra. Sports bras will work but get fitted. You don’t want to add to the saggy baggy boobs by wearing loose bras too. Only buy a couple (one you’re wearing & one in the wash) and look out for sales & special deals. After suffering back pain from my too large & non supportive bras, I splurged on some new (though pricey) much prettier underwear. Made me feel & look better & no more back pain. Just had to buy another lot of new underwear in a smaller size. I’ve gone from 18F to 14F to 10 FF/G. Hopefully that should be it now. Donated my too big bras to St Vinnies.

    September Sleevers???

I had my sleeve Sept 19. No complications or side effects down about 40 ish pounds so far
  13. Hi, This topic drives me nuts because it just builds fear and people hit me with this all the time. Grr. My nutritionist doesn't think surgery is right for me unless i start eating meat. I think its just old school training. I gave her a copy of the China Study and Forks over Knives and calculated my actual daily protein intake on My Fitness Pal. Using accepted protein calculations, the same ones she uses, heres what I found. Your protein needs should be based on a healthy weight rather than the weight you are before surgery. Fat doesn't require protein so adding excess weight into the calculations is silly. At 5ft 4 all I need is 60 to 70 grams of protein and that is probably high for me. During recovery when my body is trying to heal or when Im trying to gain muscle, my body would require more. The lobbyists decide what goes in the medical books but the information is out there from reliable scientific studies. Many green leafy veggies have about 10% protein built in. You need to consider all sources of protein when calculating your daily intake. I admit this will be harder and some supplementation will be required after surgery, but I swear my nutritionist stopped reading when she graduated school, about 20 years ago. Sad but true.( She still thinks cows milk is a good source of calcium but it has been proven to do more harm to your bones than good as the calcium molecule is to coarse for us to use..) To much animal protein is just as dangerous for the body as too little. Animal protein has been linked to heart disease and cancer. Read the China study, do your research and do whats best for you. There is a whole healthy vegan community out there thriving, working out, building muscle all while eating a plant based diet without excess supplements. Sorry for the rant, hope it helps.
  14. so i had my surgery on 10/3/19 and so far i’ve lost about 70lbs.. does that seem like the right number for 2 months out? i feel like maybe it’s not enough and i’m feeling a little insecure about it. i follow the diet to a T. a
  15. Hi All, I've done my surgery early May 2019. That's been 7 months ago exactly today. Clogged/Plugged ears I've been experiencing some weird behavior with my ears past few months, I'm not sure whether my gastric sleeve surgery might be the reason. My ears tend to get clogged/plugged. Speaking is sometimes hard, and if I speak I can hear my own voice loud in my head, to the point where I have a hard time listening to what the other person said when they speak at the same time as I do. It's really starting to affect my daily life, due to working within Customer Services, since I'm interacting with customers all the time. I noticed this happens when my heart rate starts going up, such as when walking fast, running, carrying heavy stuff, some form of light exercise etc. Spoke to my local doctor (Not one responsible for my surgery) she just listened to my heart rate and told me everything seems fine and let me go???? Supplements While we at it, I would like this cleared out for me as well. How far in did your vitamins drop, which then you had to take some form of supplements? I visited my local doctor (Not one responsible for my surgery) 4 months post my surgery to have a blood test done to check if there is anything I'm missing. During that time, I was losing a lot of hair (?) The doctor said everything looks fine and I do not need any supplements. My doctor seemed to be really against me having done the surgery, she believes that it's unhealthy, which makes me believe she is not willing to put the effort in to help me. But hey, maybe that's just me (Planning on going to another doctor soon) She then continued on saying that she'll book another blood test for me within 2 months (Which hasn't been done yet, called her up twice within 4 weeks with no reply yet) Summary/Questions: Is it normal that my ears feel clogged/plugged? Is the surgery the reason? Has anyone experienced something similar? How many months post surgery did you need to take supplements? Thank you for your time.

    Feeling so depressed

My surgery, GB RNY, was 10/24/19 and I am dealing with so much depression and anxiety now. My hormones are just so out of whack! All day I haven’t been able to stop crying. I had an appointment scheduled with my nutritionist today for which I had to take the whole day off of work for because it’s 3 hours away. Got a call from them 15 minutes before leaving that they are canceling the appointment and want me to come in next Thursday instead. Here’s the thing, I don’t have enough PTO from work now because of all the time I took off for work and today. I was supposed to be advanced from puréed food to soft today, I confirmed they do not want me to advance my diet until I’m seen again. I can’t make the appointment next week because my work won’t give me the time off. So I’m currently just having a nervous break down because I feel like I made such a huge mistake. I have lost about 30 lbs, but for the last 2-3 weeks it is coming off so slowly that I feel like I’m right back to where I was before surgery. I’m fat, constantly on a diet that I can never get away from, can’t eat normal foods even, and I just want to give up. I can’t make another appointment for at least until beginning of January and I have to stay on puree until then. I’m venting because I feel like I have no control over anything anymore and I’m scared I made a very poor decision to have this permanent surgery done.

    1 month follow-up

I have my 1 month follow up today - but it's closer to 6 weeks due to holidays and my doc being busy at the end of the year. I get to meet with the surgeon and my nutritionist. Still dealing with insurance and the billing department at the hospital. It's gonna be a chore I think and I know I'm gonna wind up paying a bunch. So far I'm down 48 since surgery on 10/22. 279 this morning. Hope to be 277 by the end of the week so I can call if 50 total. Somehow I lost 6 pounds between 11/27 and 12/1 and I have no idea what I did to make that work! But for now I'm back to the lose a pound - wait two days at the exact same weight - then lose another pound. It's MUCH slower than I thought it would be at this point, I'm still so close to my surgery! As long as I'm under 250 by April for my Hawaii trip I'll be happy. Joined a local gym today as well - working with a friend who is a personal trainer to get a workout plan. Going to lift 3 days a week and continue barre 2 days a week. Might give up on walking for a bit, at least during the winter.

Not Running to Food for Coping

^^^^This is a really great post. The only thing I would add, is that I may not be able to eat 3 pizzas at 1 time? But if I really want to binge, I can eat AROUND my tool. And I bet I could eat 3 pizzas in 1 day with concentrated focus. I could eat 2 pieces now as a fully mature pouch. All it would take me is to wait 30minutes to an hour and I would be good to go on another 2 slices-ad infinitum. And god forbid, if I added wine or booze into that mix? I would lower my inhibitions to the point where I could actually mainline pizza and booze together and create quite a problem. Food for many of us is out of our pouch very quickly per Dr. Weiner. He says it's as little as 10 minutes with an RNY and even faster with VSG. So it's very easy to comfort yourself back to MO.
  19. Good Morning! Today is the first day of my liver shrinking diet!  It is hard being in the office and in my classes thinking about my old habits. But surgery is so close so can't complain too much! !10 days away!! Here we go.

    balance is way off

I suffer from balance issues related to an aging hip replacement. I was in no shape to do yoga and I knew I wouldn't stick with something that I struggled to perform. So, when I finally got off my duff to lose the weight, I was very selective with the type of exercise I incorporated. About 10 years ago, I had a friend/trainer who taught us some basic Qigong exercises and I knew the benefits but had trouble following videos. I found a new teacher about 2 years ago and signed up. I've been doing Qigong for 2 years now and have noticed a significant improvement in my balance and my body's overall organization. I walk with ease and don't have any pain. I'm more flexible without all those pretzel-like yoga poses. I would also say that I'm in a better place, mentally. Qigong has made a huge difference in my life and I would recommend it to anyone, regardless of physical fitness. Qigong: (pronounced chee-gong) is a basic Chinese physical and breathing practice that some consider the foundation of TaiChi. It has roots in Chinese medicine and is for healing and well-being.

    balance is way off

Oh no, I fall enough as it is! I have been falling for a couple years, when I was in for my surgery the nurses kept asking me how I got the injury to my leg, seemed like they didn't believe me. As for Vertigo, I get it a few times a year for the past 10 years. It is no fun!

Not Running to Food for Coping

You should join us over on the Doing The Headwork thread in the main lobby! Start on Page 1! I do a combination of things depending on the situation. 1. Deep breathing (4 square breathing - google it). 2. Relaxation Meditation (5-10 minutes worth) 3. Self talk with dialogues that discuss hunger and how hunger cues to eat pass after 10-20 minutes and get quieter and quieter and pass easier the more times you do not respond to the message to eat. 4. Walk or run. 5. Process the thought, and the feeling/emotion that it elicits. 6. Eat anyway (cuz you know, we're all human and sometimes you fall down. But, you get back up and try something different next time to change the tapes.)

8weeks post op and need food ideas

juice has a lot of sugar in it, but you can buy things like cranberry beverages that have something like 5% or 10% juice that are low in sugar and five calories. Ocean Spray makes them - as do one or two other companies. They'd be in the juice section of the store. I also drink a lot of flavored waters, like Bai. And then there's Crystal Light...

    September Sleevers???

I had my Gastric Sleeve on September 24, 2019.
  25. Hello, I’m Jenny. I’m 38 years old, married to a wonderful and supportive guy, and a mother to two great kids. I had the sleeve done on Monday December 2nd with one overnight hospital stay. I went home on oxygen for when I’m at rest because of the elevation/altitude of where I live, which is near Denver. I’m 5’5” and was 295 pre-op. My goal is to lose 100 pounds and go from there. I have told very few people about my surgery because I don’t want to hear about how I took the easy way out. Nothing else I’ve tried has worked to lose weight and keep it off. This is my second day post-op, and I am very sore. I’m trying to get my fluid intake up and in a good spot, but it’s been hard. My stomach feels like I’ve been kicked a few times and it looks that way in spots where I’ve bruised. I don’t want to discourage anyone from getting their surgery done... I just wanted to write out how I’m doing so far. I hear it gets easier on the 3rd day.
