  1. My surgeon gave all of his patients an entire manual to take you through every stage of the bandster diet from pre op through weight maintenance. He advised waiting until reaching 3 months post op to begin having dark leafy raw veggies. I followed his recommendations, and have never experienced any negative effects from having a very small salad using romaine lettuce most days of the week. As always though, when you have questions, it's best to begin with finding the answers through your surgeon.
  2. Well, I'm walking that line right now. I do reveal my weight to some people..like fiancee, medical team (obvs), and one other group.... my closest friends who insist I "don't need" a surgical procedure. OK, once I tell them that I'm 5'1" and weight 276, they gasp, act concerned, and then possibly concede that maybe I do need medical intervention. Pre-op weight is embarassing and post-op weight is public? While it is obviously a personal decision, and people should definitely be proud of themselves for all of their hard work, I think my weight will probably not ever be something I discuss with "the general public", my extended family, or friends. Especially nosy coworkers! It's so personal. I mean, I've known people that have lost lots of weight, but I never had the gall to walk up to them and ask them how much they weigh (which is really what most people are trying to figure out with all of the other questions).

    What to do?

I feel you on the doubt and questioning your decision. I am about 2 weeks from surgery and I keep tossing those same questions around. However, I have a few other questions that I like to remind myself of whenever I'm doubting my choice: How long can I realistically expect to live at my current weight? You typically don't see very obese people over 65. What will my quality of life be if I don't lose weight? I dread flying, going to an amusement park, meeting strangers, eating out, going to any event where the seat might be too small or the chair too weak, etc. Will I let fear keep me from changing my life for the better? All of your worries are ligit, and I think we all have them. In the end, you have to weight the pros and cons and make your own choice. Yes this surgery has some risks, but so does everything else in life. Best of luck with your decision.

    Pre newbie questions

I thought my 6 month supervised weight loss requirement was along time. Geesh - 1 - 1 1/2 years? That sucks! I use My Fitness Pal to track food and activity. I am also going to extra counseling to learn how to stop emotional eating while I wait. Stay strong and patient!

    Getting Back On The Wagon

I gained 25 pounds since my surgery in October 2011; I consulted with my surgeons office and I am now on 800 calories per day until I get those 25 pounds off. However, it hasn't been that difficult since my last fill in May. Talk it over with your doctor's office and see what they say. Are you seeing your doctor regularly? Be very honest with yourself and with your doctor's office; they want you to succeed! Good luck to you!
  6. I carry most of my weight in the middle part of me, and I have no butt. And of course, my butt and legs have started losing it first- where I don't need it the most. The hardest for me to lose is my stomach and back and face. Just thought I'd ask ya'll where's your easiest place to lose and the hardest place also? Marci
  7. I lose weight in my face and stomach first, then my boobs then my butt, but my thighs are stubborn and i usually don't lose much there ever!
  8. I'm thickest in the middle with no hips and no butt. Of course my butt has shrunk more, however, people are telling me "you're losing weight in the belly, I can really see it, your belly and your face." Just not fast enough...

  11. So last week I turned thirty and celebrated by drinking and eating all week. For the most part I was eating a little more than normal. However the alcohol seems to have speed up my weight gain to six lbs. I pretty much only worked out twice last week. Point I'm trying to make is I thought since I hadnt gained weight I was good. Served as a wake up call that this is a lifestyle change I must make and adhere to otherwise it'd be easy to gain it back. Oh we'll back to the gym and healthy eating =-)
  12. At 10 days post-op your body is in a major heal mode. You should not be eating chicken nuggets at your stage. For RNY gastric bypass patients the Weight Loss phase is very short. You want to maximize your weight loss during this phase because soon you will slide into the Maintenance phase. So it is very very important to follow the program guidelines. Right after surgery, some individuals will lose weight quickly and effortlessly. But as time goes on, your weight loss will dramatically slow down. So make the most of it and follow the doctor's orders.

    May 13th, 465lbs

Mine was similar. I was 410 on surgery day and 6'1. I'm only 5 months out but I'm steadily losing weight each month. I think some people are losing faster than me but my surgeon said my results are great and I will probably keep losing for a long period of time. It's not a race, so fine with me. One thing my surgeon told me is that with a BMI of 50+, with the sleeve patients often don't reach a BMI under 25 or maybe even under 30. I wouldn't let that discourage you though as I'm almost 100 lbs down from where I was and I already feel a massive difference. I sleep better, I have more energy, and I fit into airline seats and other smaller spaces. Even if I never lose another pound it was still worth it.
  14. when i see my before pictures...i cringe...when i see "her" and "her" side by side...its almost unbelieveable to me...who are these people?????? ooooo....yeah...its me...its you carolann...i look at the pain in the over-weight girlz eyez...and tell "her" (me) your okay...its all right...we (i) made it through the storm; when i see the thin-girl...i tell her (i)...relax...calm down...your a girl that lost a lot of weight and you put ur pants on 1 leg at a time...i tell me...these girls have been through a lot...the over-weight girl and the thin girl...they were both hurt at some point....the over-weight girl had her reasons for becoming over-weight...the thin girl had her reasons for taking laxatives...we (i) will be okay...once you two (me) heal and become 1...we (i) will be a strong force....:-)...my point??? become 1 before this surgery...be 1 whole person...do not let this surgery divide you...the fight within is horrible.... 50.bmp
  15. This is absolutely normal! Most surgeons do not fill your band when they place it on you, during surgery. Most of the "restriction" you get, is because the band has irritated your stomach and it's swollen. As the puffiness goes down, guess what? NO restriction - meaning, food is just dropping through, as normal. Welcome to Bandster Hell - (I'm in it right now too) This is the time period that we must be patient. It typically takes 3-4+ fills to get to the perfect restriction. I'm on fill #2 (had surgery in Feb) and am no where near my "sweet spot". It's all about will power for a few months - my NUT told me that most people remain the same (weight wise) or even gain during this time period. It's frustrating and disappointing but the important thing is to be patient and know that your band WILL work - it may just not be today or tomorrow. Stay strong and know that thousands of people are going through the exact same thing you are right now!!!! Good luck!

    Muscle Aches

I've noticed that I lost weight, the pressure points on my joints is shifting - leading to achy joints and soreness. If you are just experiencing muscle pain, magnesium helps me and/or sitting in a warm tub with epsom salts.

    cheating on pre opt

When is your surgery? How long do you have to do the pre-op diet for? Mine was 2 weeks of liquids. I did cheat, around day 5, I had a few tb of peanut butter, and a few pieces of deli ham. But I still had 9 days after that to do liquids. I promise the pre-op liquid diet is much harder than the eating after surgery! It was the worst part! As far as your Dr, it depends. Mine didn't care, as long as you lost weight prior to surgery, he didn't care. they didn't even weigh me on the day of surgery! But I have heard of some drs that if you don't lose weight, they will cancel the surgery. Basically its about shrinking your liver. The more fat that is around your liver, the tougher the surgery is to do. So sticking to the diet makes the surgery safer for you, which is what you want. Stick with it, you can do it! I know its hard, but it will be over soon, and the cravings after surgery are gone.

    Turning thirty.....

Yep. I did all that, too. Would be thin by 30; by 40; by 50. I had my surgery and my 60th birthday in the same month. Don't be so hard on yourself about the number of lbs. You are actually in the healing stage and easy, soft foods are not the best for losing weight, but they are best for healing. You may be a turtle, you may be a rabbit. Just be patient and kind to yourself. It will come. This isn't a race.

    Feeling down an FAT

I am so sorry. I think possibly the worst thing you have experienced was the unbelievably hurtful comment from your mom. I know what my mom thinks, says, or tries not to say, still hurts, even though I am 39 years old! Her opinion of me matters, and she has never had a weight problem, so she just doesn't get it. And man--I know emotional eating! So I get it. If you are able, see a therapist. During my times of grief and change, they have helped me greatly. And on a positive note, you will be fine! You've come so far, keep it up!
  20. Make sure you are at a healthy BMI and not underweight. https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/obesity/in-depth/bmi-calculator/itt-20084938. Talk to your surgeons team about what foods/calorie range to eat to gain weight. Try to eat five or more small meals a day. This may help to raise calories without feeling sick.

  22. I've been looking into weight loss surgery for a few years unfortunately my in network surgeons you have to be 18. No I don't want any negative comments about adolescents getting WLS. I'm currently almost 18 and my surgeon has agreed to start the process even though my surgery will not be until after I am 18. I'm going out of state for college and I would of loved to have become healthy before school started but now I am looking around December for my surgery date. I guess any tips, any encouraging words, and even better I just wanna hear everyone's stories! Anyone else braving the holiday season with a new surgery? 5 Days Post-Op Question

Hey Seattle, I'm sorry things are not going well for you. I agree that full liquids is tough, but please hang in there. I too had issues with losing. My problem was constipation, once that got under control the losing began. Keep us posted on how your doing. You may not be drinking enough calories to lose weight. I was told that by people here, so I just made sure I was drinking my slim at shakes. Can you have the Protein shakes? SD: 10/10/12, Converted from Lapband to RNY, HW (before band) 263, HW (RNY) 230, Preop 219, after surgery 223, current 203

    Need to vent!

Im on 2nd fill too and can relate! I've learned we can confuse thirst for hunger. Sometimes when we are dehydrated a chemical sensation in our belly triggers our mind to think (Hunger). I am having my 3rd fill this week and Im determined to show up with weight loss. My friend just had her 4th fill and says she is finally feeling restriction. Please don't feel down things will be tough but we have it in us to succeed with this tool!

    Need to vent!

Don't feel bad - I, too, avoid coming on the site like I used to. It took me nearly 2 years and 7 fills before I got to my "sweet spot". With good restriction, a healthy diet, and regular exercise, I finally started losing consistently and was starting to notice change in the way my body was beginning to look and feel. Things were going great until I was hit with a medical dilemma - an unplanned hysterectomy...as my husband and I were planning to try to get pregnant. I was devastated and became depressed and withdrawn. I stopped working out, wasn't mindful of what I ate, and began gaining the weight I worked so hard to lose. Three weeks ago, after my birthday, I realized what I was doing to myself and decided to get back in gear. I started being mindful of what I eat and drink, and am trying to get myself motivated to work out regularly like I used to. I've lost 8 lbs so far, but am still frustrated. I really want to be at my goal weight by the end of summer (I've got 30 lbs to go).
