  1. I too, was a diabetic before my surgery and took 1000 mg of Metformin as well. One week after my surgery, no need for medication any more! Losing weight will drastically lower your levels! Try your best to stay away from WHITE foods as they will raise your glucose levels. Go for walks, as walking will lower your levels! Eat a well balanced diet and you will be fine. I agree with Apple, you need to have some Protein. But, limit it to 3 oz of lean protein per meal. I can't believe your Dr. would tell you not to eat protein! WOW! Keep us posted on your journey! Kelly
  2. I got that way off and on for about 6 weeks. I think I just wasn't taking in enough nourishment. Now I eat more... not too much more... but I am learning about what my body needs and getting better at listening to myself. Also its easier to eat than it was in the begining. Eventually all that weakness and dizzyness goes away... hang in there stacey

Going out to eat with the Band

I eat out on occasion..maybe once every few weeks. Some of my faves are: crab cakes and grilled fish from a local seafood restaurant, "grilled" fish from long john silvers, mac and cheese from panera bread. I'm not one that has problems with food except beef tends to disagree a little.

    Stuck at 50 lbs

I was stuck at 65 lbs for 5 weeks. I didn't consume over 1500, most days at 1200, but I was eating Special K cereal every day, because my band became a little too tight after my hysterectomy. Once I stopped the cereal, I started losing again.

    Caffeine

I Told the Doctor A few weeks Prior to Surgery, If I had to give up Regular Coffee, then no Lap band ! He said is no problem & it has been great.

    5 days post op

You should not even be weighing yourself right now. It's common to gain weight the first week from all the fluids pumped into you in the hospital and the swelling. Just concentrate on fluids and protein and stick to your plan- you will lose weight! I gained 9 lbs in hospital. I'm also 5 days post-op.

Focusing on the scale will mess with your mind. Just concentrate on your liquid intake. Seriously it may be 2 weeks before the scales will show any changes. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  9. Hi everyone, I'm New to BariatricPal but many posts have been very helpful throughout my short journey. I can't wait to continue being motivated by reading about everyone else's struggles similar to mine and success stories I aspire to accomplish. Best of luck to all! So today is my 10th day post op, & had an appointment with my NUT i was hoping she'd say I was good for mushy foods because I was so sick of protein shake at this point. 2 weeks pre op & 10 days post op liquid diet. Turns out she did give me the go ahead and I went home for some beans and low fat melted cheese... First, the cheese didn't melt all the way (gross) almost like imitation cheese. Second, the moment I ate the first baby spoon I immediately had gas like lil burp bubbles coming up. It continued for the whole 1st ounce and the 1/2 ounce after that was fine but I did have a slight stomach ache afterwards that took me to the restroom. I'm a lil scared it might have been too soon to go off liquids, I'm so sick of protein shakes and was looking forward to some kind of food other than broth. How was your first experience??? Should I hold off on trying again or is this a normal reaction?

    Anyone had issues with gout?

Surgery was 70 days go and everything has been great. Losing weight, eating well, drinking water. Then I get gout. I've had it or several years, but only have flare ps 2x a year that only last a day or two. This time it as way different. Two weeks later, two different prescriptions, foot swollen couldn't even put my shoe on. Finally dr ave me prednisone. Swelling is own nearly a week later but till painful. I'm sure it's the high protein and fish. Anyone else suffering? Ideas?

    11 days post op

I am... Let's see 18 days post op now, and YES! I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the long liquid tunnel, but I was pretty miserable for the past week or so about only having liquids. It does get better, and honestly it inspired me to start adding random things to my protein shakes to make them better. Today I am very proud, I got 70 grams of protein and 500 calories with only 12 carbs which is way more than previous days. The problem in currently having is very difficult/hard BMs which is not very fun. Finally moving on from liquids only on Wednesday and the first item up is Eggface's Ricotta bake!
  12. I just got back from Texarkana and Dr Hekier and Keilan's seminar on the band. I was extremely impressed with them and their staff. I went by their office today and talked with their insurance lady (Betty). She is really nice and helpful. I have a date of 4/3/06 for my consult with the doctors, nutritionist consult, psychological consult and sleep study all in one day! I think she said I can bring blood work from my many doctors I already go to and have done every 3 months! Because I will be Medicare, I will have to spend the night in the hospital but that is no problem for me...I will enjoy the extra time to re-group. LOL. Also, I don't have to have a letter of medical necessity but she said it would be a good idea to let my primary care doctor know what I am planning so he can get on board and be ready to adjust my meds after surgery. The doctors also want me to be off the methotrexate for a few weeks after the surgery just to make sure I can heal and not get an infection since methotrexate lowers your immune system. They have done 131 lap bands between them and they ALWAYS work together unless one gets called out of surgery because of an emergency. They are extremely well qualified and also have great personalities...which is important to me. Their credentials are in my opinion above reproach....so I feel really good. I am soooooooo excited! I will probably be banded sometime in April or early May!!!!!:clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

    Bad Breath.....

Some of you may not know it...but I did also have breathe for 3 weeks post op.... I talked to my doctor about it, and he said that it's a side effect of having a wound in ur stomach....when ur sleeve has healed, the bad breathe will go away......
  14. @@CherieRyde today marks the beginning of my third week post-op so I can't ultimately answer your question, but ironically I started my period yesterday. I have always been fairly regular, though. You got banded in July - is this your first period since then? Just curious. I have actually been very curious to see if losing weight would cause changes in cycles. Sorry I don't have any answers! I am hoping some other female vets will join this thread
  15. This forum is like therapy.... I start my two week liquid diet 2mar... Soooo tonight I am having Stuffed Chicken Marsala, Salad, and Stuffed Mushrooms from Olive Garden and a Mega Sweet Tea from Milo's.... And I feel no shame.....
  16. Well here goes, my story. I have always had a weight problem, for as long as I can remember. I can remember my Dad grilling me about how much I weighed when I was in like third grade. My Dad was slim as a young adult, but put on a few pounds as he aged. My Mom struggled with her weight, but she is a strong minded woman, and has never been "fat". She loves to cook and bake, but she is great about not eating what she cooks. I am a "Mature" adult now, (translate that to read almost ready for Medicare), but feel much younger, and want to continue to feel years younger. I started thinking about bariatric procedures shortly after my cousin, who is a sugeon, had a Roux N Y procedure himself. He subsequently specialized in bariatric surgery and is currently doing mainly bariatric procedures. Throughout my adult life I have been or participated in Weight Watchers, Diet Center, Weight Down Workshop, Over Eaters Annon., TOPS, and a bunch more that I can't even remember, plus have tried almost every diet that has come along. I even went so far as to make an appointment and go see him last summer. But when I checked with our insurance company, they informed me they don't pay for ANY bariatric procedures. My cousin (bless his heart) offered to do the surgery for free, but I would still have to pay the hospital and anesthesia costs, which were going to run about $14,000. I didn't have $14,000 sitting around, so I started looking at options in Mexico. I choose to go to Tijuana and have the surgery there. I was sleeved three days ago, and so far am very happy with my choice.

    Pregnancy After Ryn-Y.

I don't really have any advice, but my husband's cousin just had a baby last month after RNY & she was less than a year postop when she got pregnant. This was her 2nd child & she had been told that the only way she had a hope of getting pregnant again was to lose weight, so that's why she had the bypass to begin with. She has mentioned that she only gained 17 lbs during the pregnancy & I know they kept a pretty close eye on her because of the bypass. By the time her daughter was about 2 weeks old, she posted that she had lost 30 lbs from the delivery date & actually weighed less than when she got pregnant. Her pregnancy was pretty easy & her new daughter is healthy as can be. Good luck to you!

    Dating options post surgery

Not sure if I'm posting in the right area so I apologize if this is in the wrong place. I'm single and I dating for me usually involves going to restaurants and bars. I'm going to be banded next week so I intend to be single for a while after but what are the options for when I start dating again? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Going out to eat with the Band

We eat out at least once per week. I don't have any trouble. Sometimes I will split with one of my kids or husband & sometimes I order my own and take leftovers home. I can pretty much eat whatever I want - I try to eat "healthy" - I stay away from breads, meats can be difficult depending how they are cooked. This lapband has not stopped me from eating out or having an occasional alcoholic beverage - I just need to think about my choices.

    15 Days till banding

I saw my Dietician today - Trudy Wiliams. I have been seeing Trudy for a couple of years now and she is very familiar with my struggle. She is very possitive and supportive about LB and has every confidence that I will do well. She ran through the pre op. diet, the post op diet and the puree diet. I just want to get started now because I have everything ready to go. I think the 2 weeks pre op diet is going to be the hardest so I just want to get that over and done with. I've been having a few of my old favourite meals the last few days - saying good by to them for good I suppose. Today I had Narchos. I feel so full but I dont feel bad. It wasn't that great. Tomorrow morning I weigh myself and take measurments. These will be my starting figures.

    Diabetes meds

Hi I am type 1 diabetic and my BS stayed in the upper 200's for several weeks. My doc also told me it was due to the surgery and it takes a while to even out.
  23. Why can't you go back and get your fill early? Why do you have to wait until March? I started booking my next appt 2 weeks after my fill in case I didn't feel restriction. I just had my 3rd fill, 5.5cc in a 10 cc band and now feel restriction. I will see how it goes and if I am still feeling restriction next week I will cancel my appt and make it for a later date.
  24. So, I had a bad second fill experience. I'm over it now, but have no restriction at all. Can't get my third fill until the first week of March. Here are some things I'm thinking of doing to get through this and still lose some weight. Any other suggestions are GREATLY appreciated! 1. I am planning healthy dinners for this week so I don't just do carry out and get something unhealthy. 2. I'm going to add an extra day of working out. 3. I am not going to eat after 8pm. 4. No more munching on snacks at work. I'm going to bring hot tea and have that instead.

    Burping/ Water

holy cow - my personal opinion is that your body is telling you that you're doing too much! At my post op today, I was told no exercise (other than short walks) for a month post op because the stomach is still very swollen. not sure mowing the grass when you're 1 1/2 weeks post op is a good idea, but I'm glad that you're feeling well enough to do so....but be careful, ok?
