Maybe this info will be helpful to someone: So I was stuck at a plateau weight for a couple of weeks, and I was okay with it b/c I know it happens. But then I actually GAINED weight. In fact, I was feeling overall lousy, bloated and sluggish, with headaches and stomach discomfort. Frustrated, I called my bariatric team and they asked me to give them a run-down of what I was eating. I was drinking a protein shake every day for breakfast, sometimes another protein shake for lunch, and sugar-free pudding was my go-to snack. Long story short, turns out I am lactose intolerant, and the protein shakes I was drinking are made with milk protein, a/k/a lactose. What I thought was helping was actually sabotaging my efforts! I stopped drinking the shakes, cut out milk-based products and BOOM started losing weight immediately! I'm told that it is very common to develop a lactose intolerance after VGS surgery. Had no clue.

Thinking About Gastric Sleeve
Creekimp13 replied to AstroCat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Everyone has to weigh the benefits vs risks and decide for themselves. Good for you for digging in and doing that work. Wish you the best no matter what you decide. (I love my sleeve and wish I'd done it years ago) Cool article you might enjoy: https://www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/12/7/16587316/bariatric-surgery-weight-loss-lap-band -
Thinking About Gastric Sleeve
PrayingForWeightLoss replied to AstroCat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved July 2017 and weighed 233lbs then. I had been through every diet known to google and I would lose a bit of weight, plateau then gain the weight back and more. I am a health professional myself and know that every surgery has risks. However, there has been a lot of research and improvements done such that bariatric surgery is now a very safe procedure. Complications still happen to some but the risks have been significantly lowered over the years. I am one of those people who had zero complications. The surgery is one of the best decisions I made for myself and my health. I have lost close to 60lbs now, eat well and exercise regularly. I am now more positive, confident and generally relaxed. Hope you make the right decision for yourself and your health. -
That's a shame. I find that there are people who, for reasons I can't seem to explain, are happy that they have "fat friends" and don't want that to change. I have only told a few friends and all but one were excited and extremely supportive. The one who wasn't, she's someone who can't stand when the attention isn't on her about everything. Even when I told her that I'd scheduled the date and I couldn't wait, she was like "That's great. I can't wait to get my cast off and my wisdom teeth pulled and my cavity filled." (That's a quote. It was a text message.) I was really upset, because for a little while, it's suppose to be about you, not them. What I mean to say is, I'm glad you didn't let them discourage you forever. There are people who try to keep us down and we can't allow that. And I've been considering bariatric surgery for the past year and a half. My doctor recommended it to me a while ago. It took a little while to convince my mother that it was a good idea, she was worried about her daughter having any kind of surgery, but is now super supportive. I'm just glad to have it done now. I'm in college and have health insurance, so why not take advantage of it while I can guarantee that I can afford to do it?

17 Months Post Op - thinking of a fill?
Helen Bauzon replied to purbanow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The warning bells that I hear is that you have a PB 3 times a week bc you are going too fast. If you have another fill before you address this the PB's will only get worse and you will be more prone to eating the ice-cream, which is easy and soothing after a PB. I would recommend you manage things to reduce the PB to 1/fortnight the most then determine if you need or can manage another fill. If old habits are sneaking in, yes a little amount of Fluid will help take the edge off, but as others have commented (great to see), re-address your total food intake and exercise levels. Hope this helps Helen Bauzon Specialist Bariatric Dietitian -
My friend's surgeon agreed to do my fills and he's charging less than the fills centers and another dr wanted to charge me for the first visit. I have to pay $150 for each visit/adjustment and the fill center wanted to charge me $350 for the first visit and $160 for every visit/adjustment after that. Bariatric Surgery Treatment | Gastric bypass surgery | Lap Band Surgery Houston, Texas | Sleeve Gastrectomy Texas I got 1 cc and he made me drink a bottle of Water before I left to make sure it wasn't too tight. After about 4 sips I had to go throw that water up and he had to take half my fill back out again so I have only .5 cc's in right now. I was really adamant before I got there that I was gonna push for at least 3 cc's to start with and thought it was pretty funny that 1 cc was too tight LOL I think I've been able to eat so much because I've been drinking with my meals and I thought the only reason why you're not supposed to is because it might be painful BUT he told me today that drinking with meals actually makes the food mushy so it doesn't stay in the little pouch as long and negates the purpose of the band. I'm glad to know that and I'll stop drinking with meals now and hopefully get back to losing weight!

Band to Sleeve Revision...I hope
lizmo8175 replied to Tracyde730's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm having the revision surgery cuz I've had nothing but complications with my band i have it for about 4 years I never could find my sweet spot is either over filled under-filled I just thought I would go about my business and deal with it! sometimes I can eat and sometimes I cant eat most the time I am vomiting because my food gets stuck I finally made an appointment with a new bariatric surgeon and found out that it slipped and is at the top of my stomach and bottom of my esophagus which means I don't have a pouch anymore so when I am able to eat without any problems I totally over it because I never know when I'm going to be able to eat again which sucks!!!!also I have a hiatal hernia I gained all my weight back plus a couple pounds and I also have slowly and gradually been getting heartburn more frequently I believe that is due to the hernia I was just approved by my insurance and hopefully get a call today to get my surgery date.. for the revision. I wish I would have went in a couple of years ago and caught it in time but I didnt there is no way that I would want to be re banded just to go through all of this again I want the damn thing out and I want a permanent change it is definitely scary though but in the end I'm sure it'll be well worth it!!! In facts my surgeon and a lot of Surgeons are not doing the Lap Band anymore because of the complication rates I'm happy for the people that have not had any problems or complications:) Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App -
Bariatric advantage chew bites
Beckyyb93 replied to Kelly827's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No problem Also, the other flavors of Celebrate chews aren't nasty so if you like sweets I'd give it a try...I just like fruity Vitamins lol. I think the reason they are so much cheaper is because you can buy them in bulk. Celebrate Calcet Creamy Bites have 500mg of Calcium and are: $23.90 for 60 Celebrate chews have 250mg of Calcium and are: $11.75 for 60 Bariatric Advantage chews have 250mg of Calcium and are: $12.65 for 60 So, I guess they aren't significantly different..weird. I wonder if my surgeon raises the price for the BA chews in his office.. -
Can some of you tell me how much the total bill was on your surgery. I want to hear feed back from you all not a doctors office.
KristyAB replied to Animal Lover's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My total bill including: Pre-op visit fees, surgery center fee, anesthesiologist fee, bariatric surgeon fee, post-op visit fees, and post-op medications was a total of $12,000. That also includes all expenses for one year post-surgery and lifetime nutrition and exercise counseling. Not too bad of a deal if you are a cash pay patient. -
Hi Danielle, Lively bunch for sure aye? lol. It's always great to get different views on things but, always go with what you believe is the best for you having taken in your docs advice, nutrionists and signs from your own body. I followed my docs/nutrionists instructions after my banding. They were pretty much the same rules given out by the band makers. I was on clear liquids for 2 days then full liquids for 2 weeks, mushies for 3 weeks then regular food. Told to take very small bites and chew very well putting my fork down in between. No liquids 30 min before or 30 min after etc. The reason I followed those rules to the T? The track record of patients my surgeon performed this surgery on. I asked him how many patient's had erosion....not one. That was enough for me to follow them. Another thought is.....I don't want ME to be the reason for any banded problems. If a problem occurs I know I did everything I could so it wouldn't happen. I don't want that blame on my shoulders. If something happens it won't be because I ate too soon, too much, or the wrong things at the wrong time. But, that's just my way of handling my banding and keeping myself on track. I figure I went through alot to get this tool and I really want to keep it as long as I can so I know I have to do the work and do my best. Your best is all any surgeon can ask for or that you can ask for yourself  Take time, listen to your body, seek out suggestions from your bariatric center and never be afraid to call them if you have questions or concerns. I wish you the best with your band! Good luck everyone and remember one banded day at a time  Hugsssssssss

Bariatric weightloss medications
erp replied to Mapleleaves Welch's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
My doctor put me on phentermine before referring me to bariatrics. It worked for about a month but it's easy to eat around. You can also take an ephedra/caffeine combo aka EC stack. In either case, working with a doctor is the right way to go. Good luck to you. -
I need help getting a fill in and around Olympia WA. I was just informed that Kaiser (formally Group Health) will no longer support the Lap Band. So those who have a Lap Band installed by them - you are basically left out in the cold without any support. They will take out your fill - but not add any. If you want to have another procedure, you have to jump through all the hoops AGAIN. I had 1 cc removed when I had a stomach bug - thinking, no problem I'll get it put back in after I recover. Fast forward 6 very long months, my regular Dr. at Kaiser finally got a response from the Bariatric Center stating they no longer support the band. My band works great - no issues- I just need to have 1 cc put back in. Help....

Psych Evaluation...im nervous
mrsto replied to jesse6657's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I found the psych evaluation to be pretty weak. They want to get an idea of who you are, and make sure that #1, you're not suicidal, where weight loss surgery will push you off the deep end. And then they want to get an idea of your food issues; how you eat, when, why, etc. At the end of my session, she said that I was an excellent candidate for the gastric bypass. Because I tend to graze throughout the day, bypass seemed to be a better choice. With the band, they want you to have only three meals a day. Though her recommendation was bypass, she said that I would also be okay with the band, and she wouldn't absolutely say that it wasn't an option.....if that's the way I wanted to go. I'm guessing that all psych evaluations run a little differently, but that's how mine went. I would say that most ALL of us run to food out of boredom, emotion, etc., and the shrinks expect to hear it. But they will advise you on lifestyle changes, and what it will take on your part to work with the band. We all didn't get here because we simply love food & eat only when we are hungry. I would find it difficult to believe that any bariatric surgeon, or his staff, would think otherwise. But it's up to us to work on our heads, getting any and all support we need along the way. Good luck! -
I may try this "Coromega" stuff. It is comes in little packets and is orange flavored. I googled for "bariatric fish oil".

Hey Kesia! I too live in Ga. and have medicaid. And MA does cover the Lapband. I rcvd my approval on Monday, but u have to go to a Center of Excellence, and you need to sign up with Peachstate as your carrier. The center I am using is Peachtree Surgical and Bariatric at Atlanta Medical Center. They have a seminar on June 21st. the website is peachtreebariatric .com . Check them out and if you have any other questions feel free to send me a private message.

I Got My Date 6/18! For The First Time It Felt Real... Real Scary!
CraftyV posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This whole time I had been so confident about this surgery. I am No. Cal but I have to drive 1.5 hours to Richmond Kaiser because they specialize in Bariatric Surgery. First, I always dislike going to Richmond. The staff their is rude and tacky! I am an educated person, yet they have spoken to me in a derogatory tone. Yesterday, one of the staff spoke to me slowly as if I was dumb! Their Registration person ignored me when I asked her if she was open... Honestly, I am a no nonsense type of person and I felt very vulnerable at that moment. I called my husband to express my feelings and as soon as I heard his voice I started crying!! WTH! In front of everyone! Then I called the staff ghetto and rude, and they heard me :s To be honest, I just wanted to go home! I was hungry and sleepy (office being audited, I have not been sleeping well) and I still had a long drive home + traffic. I don't regret calling them rude and ghetto because they take advantage of our vulnerability. Every time I come to that horrid place, the staff is talking about their personal issues, eating, and ignoring me when I have a question... So, long story short... I am scared and I feel vulnerable! Sorry for the rant! Good luck to all of you! Veronica -
Medicaid is definitely different from state to state. I work at a hospital in Virginia and we can only see patients from Virginia and West Virginia. West Virginia is covered in Virginia because they have such limited options for medical care in parts of their state - many of them drive 6+ hours to see us. Otherwise, no other state's Medicaid program is accepted in our state. Additionally, there have been recent changes to Medicaid programs and many states are now contracting Medicaid benefits with regular HMO companies. (Medicare is different - that's generally what we all get when we're 65 and over. That works anywhere in the country.) I do know that Medicaid even pays for Viagra, so I would be really disgusted if they didn't cover something like banding. I would do what someone advised above - call the number on your card and ask a) if bariatric surgery is covered and  which providers in your state participate. Good luck :cool2:

Renewing your vows is a really cool idea! I know so many brides who would love a "redo" on their special day but in a sexier dress! I hope you do it! I love the picture of you standing in your old pants.... isn't that just mind-blowing? How much do you love your sleeve?!!!! -
Need tips, advices and recipes..
msnowman74 replied to dalysm86's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Before the surgery I made my own broth and froze it in ice trays. I also made puréed soup and froze that in ice trays as well. I just didn't want to have to worry about recipes or cooking after the surgery. Sugar free Popsicles were my go to as well and still are. Bariatric pal has been my go to for everything. Good luck with your surgery! -
@@choosehope I have the exact same problem and was very worried about what to do when I started this process. I was able to eat yo plait light yogurt as it does not contain aspartame. I was told by my nut that I should not worry and avoid any foods, drinks with aspartame. For example I was told to eat yogurt with sugar in it or pudding with real sugar in it. Leverage honey or agave nectar instead. this because you eat so little of it if you follow the food plan. Yogurts and puddings for me is where I eat sugar. I do use sugar free syrup but it is very very rare that I even eat anything where I need syrup. It does become more difficult for you when you think about what to drink. I don't use any sugar free products at all with the exception of yo plait light. I drink water only. I sometimes will infuse it with real fruit if I get sick of plain water but for me that is not a problem. This can be done without artificial sweeteners of any kind. Prior to having bariatric surgery I suffered from migraines 5 out of 7 days per week. I use Dihydroergotamine rescue shots to relieve them when I get them which makes them go away within the first hour. Now I probably get them 2 or 3 times a month if that! The high protein low carb diet has really helped me with headaches. I used to get them so bad that I developed arthritis in my jaw from clenching due to the pain. My neurologist told me this is common for people who suffer long term. I am 52. My son and 11 year old granddaughter get them as well. It is probably the worst pain and is intolerable and trust me, I have had 5 spinal surgeries. I know pain! I hope that WLS helps you with your migraines as well. I was not expecting it to and was quite surprised! Good luck!

Hi first of all vegan sausage is VERY high in fat. Try eating veggies or tofu. Check out Dr V bariatric surgeon on iTunes. He is a surgeon who’s patients eat vegan.
