    One glass of wine....

I had a small glass of wine starting at like 4 months postop. I didn’t really want any before that. My plan calls for not drinking during the weight loss phase, but my weight loss phase is going to last for a while since I have so much to lose so I felt like it was ok to introduce. It went fine, I have one every month or so now. Long term with the surgery I’m not going to be a teetotaler for life, so I’m trying to build reasonable habits.
  2. I’m trying to understand how weight loss surgery can help to lessen binge eating and emotional food addiction. I live and breathe food. I never get hungry because I never stop eating. I wake up in the morning with the first thought being food. I get up several times in the night and binge. I eat throughout the day and even more in the evening. I’m in a Catch 22 of depression which makes me eat and eating which makes me depressed. I am willing to wait on surgery until I get professional help and get my addiction under control, but I read that the surgery will help, as well. Can anyone share their experience?
  3. I know it's no where near my goal and I've been losing pretty slowly compared to some but I'm finally consistently below 230! That's a big deal to me! Every time I try to lose weight, I always get stuck around 233 and eventually give up. I called it my "normal fat" weight where I don't hate myself. This feels like my first real milestone. 203 is next (my weight after my first year teaching). I've been discouraged since surgery because my weight loss pattern is stalling 80% of the time and losing a few pounds overnight every 2-3 weeks. I'm averaging about 7 pounds a month and I'm still pretty early out. But this is a WIN for me! I think this WILL work for me! It just might take some time. AND I started working out this week. Fingers crossed that it speeds things up (or keeps things going).
  4. I have hair that is short/buzzed on one side and short/a few inches on the other. I was also wondering about this. I have a lot of hair, but each hair is pretty fine. I was wondering if I would want to change my hairstyle before surgery, or just see what happens.

What's the deal with "Straws vs No Straws"

Yup. Was told the same thing....to avoid straws when I get my surgery done due to taking in too much air and possibly too much liquid at a time. Who knows. I don't typically use them anyway unless at a restaurant so it's no loss for me.

    ChubRub's Plastic Surgery Thread

Looking awesome! Are you still wearing your faja or other compression? I quit about a month ago, didn’t seem to make any difference. Your TT scar is fading faster than mine, but even so I’m thrilled with my results. I’ve dropped 13 lbs post op (he said he took off 11 lbs of skin, so a true loss of just 2 lbs weight), don’t see any issues due to that.

    Did you hair come back?

Oh my! I lost more than half my hair which wasn’t thick pre Op. Surgery was July 2020. Hair started falling out in hand fulls in December. The hair loss has all but stopped since the first part of April. I have hair growing back because I have 1-3 inch baby hairs all over the top of my head and it sticks straight up! 😂 I should buy stock in hairspray, the only way to tame the crazy going on. after speaking with my nutritionist, she said my labs indicated I was low on iron, so I added a separate iron pill to my vitamin and supplement daily routine. I have also added more biotin as well as daily collagen to my routine. Added Viviscal to my routine as well. So far, so good!

It’s been 6 mos. today so maybe it will slow down soon. Cant go much longer!!!😖😥but thanks again! I appreciate that and it gives me some hope.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Congrats on your weight loss. I know it's hard, but I was just in a virtual support group meeting and the facilitator as well as group members who are a ways out, encouraged everyone to not compare themselves to one another. The nurse reminded us that we all have different bodies and they all respond differently. Also different starting weights and different healing processes. Again, congrats and I hope that you celebrate all that you have achieved.

    12 years after surgery

Hi there, February 09 surgery and maintaining. My binge eating exploded a few years post op. Our need for short and long term mental health support following weight loss surgery is under valued. We need available support for our head issues even if we've not needed mental health support in the past. Almost every day is a battle but I'm managing. Hopefully I'll find answers to my dysfunctional eating patterns. I look forward to the day when my relationship to food becomes "normal". This is my elusive goal. Achieving a normal and rational perspective on food and body image. High five to both of us for losing weight. High hopes that each of us will find what's needed to move from a daily struggle to normal maintenance. MSW

    Scared of losing weight

I can identify with how you perceive your body. Vanity has kept me gorgeous from size 18/20 to size 2/4. However, post op I began experience insane body dysmorphia. I felt obese a few pounds above my ideal weight after a lifetime of not feeling fat despite my obesity. Weight loss can alter one's self image and spark un anticipated behavioral changes. Therapy was not in my post op budget so I'm continuously working on my self image. Reality vs my perception is a long term struggle. You are not the first to experience this particular flavor of crazy . For some of us it's a normal part of adjusting to our new reality. Therapist define these experiences as "Adjustment Disorders". Step one to resolving your issues is awareness. You've begun the introspective work. That's a good start for reconciling your perceptions with reality. Best wishes! MSW

    Skin issues after RNY

While I know nothing about the skin issues I can comment be on the hair loss. Biotin 5000 daily is still my hair best friend a dozen years post op. Hair loss is common within the first six months post op as others have already explained. For me the hair loss slowed but never completely stopped. I take my vitamins religiously and have no nutritional deficiencies. Nonetheless, biotin is a must or the hair loss starts again. MSW

    Anyone for October 2020?

I have been listening to podcast by Corinne - Losing 100 pounds as she talks about the emotional side of losing weight and how weight loss and keeping it all is a matter of fixing our emotions and fixing the head work. She is amazing! She says it like it is such as don't eat your feelings because feelings aren't hungry and don't need to be fed. You can listen to her podcast for free here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/losing-100-pounds-with-corinne/id1233384453 or check out her No BS weightloss program website here : https://www.phit-n-phat.com/

    Documented weight loss attempts!

My GP happily wrote me a letter of reference that documented my own personal weight loss attempts and struggles with my weight over the years (I’d never been under a medical weight loss program before going to the Bariatric surgeon). Has your weight been a concern that was brought up to your GP before or possibly Gyno? Most are pro Bariatric and can help with this letter of reference.

    Any March Surgeries?

I’ve noticed a lot of focus on comparing of weight loss on this forum. In a recent follow up appointment with my clinic, I asked if I’m losing what is expected. She said that they never comment about the amount loss but only that you are losing. It makes sense since all of us are at different starting points and at different BMIs. Also, I wouldn’t recommend weighing yourself everyday. Pick a day and time and weigh yourself once a week. You don’t want to obsess with the number on the scale. You should focus more on how you feel each day.

    Any March Surgeries?

Congrats on the weight loss. My surgery date was March 29. I’m down 15 since then. It’s slow , steady and consistent. With regards to the acid reflux, I was prescribed upon discharge Prevacid for 3 months post op to deal with the stomach acid. I take one before breakfast and one before dinner. I have had constipation too. My doc doesn’t want me to rely on Senokot which was prescribed the first few weeks. My dietition recommended Psyllium Husks which is the active ingredient in Metamucil. Psyllium Husk powder is a lot cheaper and does the same thing. I take 1 teaspoon every morning. You can stir it in water or blend it in some apple sauce, which what I do. So far it seems to do the trick. It may take 2 days before it kicks in. Hope that helps.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Hi there, I dont have a dislike of water. It's the metallic taste that I have in my mouth that some people talk about during this process. It makes the water taste bad. I limit myself to one pack of crystal lite a day because I want straight water really for my weight loss. I will keep trying options. Just wish I can get rid of that metallic taste.

    Any April 2021 surgeries?!

Your doing excellent and weight loss is different for everyone. Just stay the course and walk in 10 minute intervals several times a day. I have spoken to many people that do that and it seems to help.

    Plastic surgery pricing and insurance

Because of back and other physical issues, I got a referral from pain management. I also wrote a letter stating my weight loss, the crucial role exercise plays in maintenance & the way the excess skin impedes and adds to my physical limitations. They not only covered panniculectomy but the abdominoplasty as well! Best of luck
  24. So just a little history: I am 42, , 5’11 and spent a good 10 years of life competing in women’s bodybuilding and also did trail running and half marathons before injuries, peri menopause, and a car accident caused me to gain a lot of weight over a few years. My surgeon is insisting that my goal weight be 150-155 lbs. I have not weighed this even when I was bodybuilding and completely shredded with a full 6 pack. He even tried to get me to switch from VSG to bypass because he felt it would help me lose more weight. I started out at 339 pre surgery and am down to 308 at 4 weeks post. There is no way that I feel I could ever weigh 150lbs as I would be skin and bones! Has anyone had a higher goal weight being taller or having more muscle mass than an average person? Did your muscle mass help or hinder your progress with weight loss? I have my long term goal weight in my head as 199lbs and I’m being told that I would still be obese at this and it isn’t a good goal for me to have.

    Goal rewards—suggestions?

In the past I've taken trips when I've gotten to milestone weight losses. Of course, I take trips for any reason or no reason at all. I'm so-so on spa stuff and no interest in tattoos, but I will definitely need new clothes when I've lost more weight, since I've gotten rid of all my smaller clothes from my last weight loss. I don't know yet whether I'll need/want plastic surgery. Part of me worries that I either won't get to goal weight or will just gain the weight back if I do get to goal weight.
