  1. Missy constantly gave her best friend Janet a hard time about her vertical sleeve operation. Although Janet was losing weight and feeling good, Missy relished pointing out that Janet took the "easy way out' and should have had enough will power to lose weight "the normal way". Janet loved her life-long friend Missy but was thinking about dumping her as a friend because of the abuse. A strange light awoke Missy one night and a feeling of travelling very fast came over her. It only lasted about 10 seconds. Missy shrugged it off and went back to sleep. When she went to her refrigerator the next morning it was nearly empty. When she walked outside she found an odd futuristic setting, nothing was the same. She tried to find out what was happening from her strange neighbors but they refused to talk to her and appeared angry. She found her way to the indoctrination center that had replaced the library and accessed the computer. She discovered she was in the year 2514, there had been a huge food shortage, the world government "encouraged" everyone to get a Vertical Sleeve Gastronomy to cut down on food use. Those who refused were treated as selfish pigs and called glutton bellies and enemies of the people. They were accused of taking "the easy way out" and were shunned because they refused to do things "the normal way". Missy went to the bathroom and checked her belly, no scars like Janet had, she was in trouble. She woke up in a cold sweat. Food was in the fridge, back to 2013, it was all a dream. She called Janet and arranged a lunch date and then called a florist to surprise her at work. Janet got her friend back, Missy woke up.

    Pureed foods stage

I am 19 days post op and on Wednesday I can begin my puréed foods stage. The only example I got from my NUT was mashed potatoes. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Can I have refried beans (fat free of course) or chili?
  3. We can't really tell you why you always feel hungry. Maybe you're one of the ones who will need a fill in excess of the base volume. Maybe your band has slipped. Maybe you're eating foods that go right through vs. hard proteins/solids. Who knows? I have a 4.0 band and have ben sitting at 3.25 for about 8 months now. I have lost about 160 +/- 10 lbs. I stopped feeling hungry on the last day of my pre-op diet, except for a handful of times I've felt hungry in the (almost) 2 years since.

    Stopped weight loss

Is anyone aging weight? I have gained 10 pounds in 4 months. I'm always hungry, choosing the wrong foods, not exercising. No big surprise why I'm gaining right. I need help.
  5. Hello everyone! I was banded 01/24/13. Down 35 lbs. Today I decided to dress up but I needed to wear a spanx to accomplish the look. I don't know if its the spanx or band, but I have not been able to keep food down all day. Hopefully when I take off the spanx I'll be able to eat.
  6. I have taken a very long time to decide to do this. I had a failed band removed and my appetite has gone through the roof - I have gained 10# since it was removed. I had alot of conerns, like most of us do. I have done alot of research, talking to people, getting screening tests etc and I finally came to peace with this decision. I want the benefits that a healthier body will bring me, and I have tried so hard, so many times over the years to lose and keep weight off... and I just can't make anything work. Anyway, I made peace with my decision, scheduled my surgery and while still a little nervous, I was actually looking forward to it. Then, this week I had a major meltdown. It was triggered by being required to do another sleep study since I have gained weight since I was originally fitted with a cpap last year. At the same time, I found out that my insurance changes starting jan 1 and the sleeve is no longer covered! (the new insurance provider considers it investigational) For some reason, that feeling of pressure, like I have to keep my Dec date just caused a big emotional reaction. I am preapproved for this year - so really - if i want insurance coverage I need to do this in Dec! My sleep study went okay, no adjustment to the cpap needed. I do now have something new to worry about - people with sleep apnea have a higher anesthesia risk during the first 24 hours after surgery (when you no longer have a breathing tube). I didn't really know too much about this before. I am feeling a little better today, but I feel very confused why I would be so strong and confident about the decision to be sleeved, and to be thrown into an emotional tizzy due to the sleep apnea info plus the pending insurance issues.

    72 Pounds Down

I was 236 but in that picture I really don't know how much I weight because that was like 5 months before I started going through the process of meeting the surgeon nut during the two week pre op diet lost 17 pounds . After two weeks after surgery I did get really sick with vomiting on and off the whole summer so I think that also had a lot to do with me losing so fast because I wasn't really able to eat like that ( which was the worst part of my experience ) but I was losing a lottt . Like some weeks I was losing 10 pounds in a week . But after I got better I would stall a little and then now I still continue to lose . Like since last week I've lost 8 pounds.
  8. I got two new ones today at Target on clearance for about $10 each...but that doesn't beat the trip I made to Kohls today where I found one on clearance for$6 something and another for $9 something and then had a coupon for additional 15% off. I was super excited to discover the non-plus size ones actually fit me this time (I could never find plus-sze on clearance).

    Starting over with the Sleeve

Hello, I am in your same boat x2 I originally had band place in 2005. Then revised in 2014, however it failed me again. Converted to sleeve on 02/18/2019. Hope it goes well for both of us post lap banders.
  10. I attended my initial lap band seminar in September. I was very angry with my boss for the insurance plan that we have...he eliminated weight loss surgery from the BCBS cafeteria plan. I was stuck with self pay, so I contemplated surgery for 3 more months....it was $10K, out of pocket! I eventually decided, at the end of January 2011, to proceed with surgery. Surgery was set for March 1, 2011 and I was excited....just excited, not scared.....READY! My doctor, Dr. Wilkenfeld in Conroe/The Woodlands, TX had a wonderful 3 hour pre-op seminar about eating, medications, exercise...everything to know before and after surgery. I also attended a 2 hour post op seminar about food and nutrition. There are monthly seminars about everything from diferent types of exercise, information from dieticians, plastic surgery...I attend my first one this weekend! My doctor performs this surgery as an outpatient procedure, so ther was no overnight stay for me. I went home after the surgery feeling like I had been hit by a truck. For 4 days, I thought "What have I done to myself? This was a horrible decision." I had problems with nasuea from the liquid vicodin....as soon as I switched from that to Children's Tylenol, I felt much better! I had surgery on Tuesday and was out of the house on Friday! I took it easy through the weekend and was able to return to work on Monday (yoga pants and no underwire until Thursday)....luckily, I didn't have to go see any customers! By Thursday, I was back to almost normal and had my first post op appointment. I was down 8 lbs in 10 days...not too bad! I haven't weighed again since then, so I don't know where I am 23 days out, but I am in pants that I wasn't able to button pre surgery. I only weigh when I go to my doctor's office. Next appointment and first fill is 3/30/2011....I'll have my weight update and the real truth after the first fill! I have some restriction, but I am pretty hungry 2-3 hours after eating. I have had a few problems with eating too much, but PB (productive burping) helped and I haven't made that mistake in a while. There was ALOT of gas pain for the first week....this was the most painful part of the surgery. I have more gas issues now than I did before, but I DID have major surgery to my digestive tract, so that is to be expected. It gets better every day.

  12. So this week I went to my surgeon for my 3 month post op visit. 3 months!!! ALREADY! Wow, I cannot believe how fast the time goes when you are so focused on a goal! So, I went there and first off got weighed by the nurse. She says to me, "Wow, you are down another 26.3 pounds since the last time we saw you just over a month ago!" So I tell her about the hair loss and the little bit of worry that I have about the loose skin, and she gives me some fliers about what other Vitamins I can be taking for the hair loss (BY THE WAY, ANY ADVICE IN THIS AREA WOULD BE GREAT!!!). She then tells me to ask the Dr. about the skin and what he thinks. So the Dr. comes in a few minutes later. Says to me, "Hello, Kim. I'll tell you, you used to look like someone I would perform surgery on, but not anymore!" So I smile and turn beat red (i'm sure) and then he looks at the chart again and says, "Kim! Do you realize you have lost 90 pounds in 4 months!?! NO ONE has ever lost that much that fast in our program!" Thats when it hit me. I have officially "lost" my 12 year old niece. WOW! Now for the bad news... My hair is 1/2 gone. Thank goodness I had a really thick head of hair to start or I would be bald by now. It's horrible! Every time I touch my head I loose a whole hand full of hair. I am really starting to worry about it but don't know what kind of vitamins to invest in so that it at LEAST slows down. HELP!!!! More bad news: I'm on another stall. I wanted to start the new year off in Onederland. I haven't lost in over 2 weeks. I am 10 pounds from Onderland and am stuck. Go figure. I just hope I can be within 5 pounds of Onderland at least by the New Year. Over all, I am happy as a lark and LOVING my new life! Thanks to the surgeon, their wonderful staff, and the sleeve I am happier than I have been in a very very long time. I finally feel good about myself and therefore am able to tackle the everyday things that used to tax me to even think about. I don't have a lot of full body pictures to post but I do have just a few to share. The first two pics is from a wedding I was in this last June (5 months ago). The last three were taken just this week. I will do my best to find some full body pictures this week and get them posted. ONDERLAND HERE I COME!!!!!!

    Prediabetic postop?

I was diabetic pre-op. They took away my med in the hospital and I haven't taken it since. Diabetes runs in my family too (grandfather, aunt, mother, cousins, etc.) My highest A1C (pre-op) was 6.8. My last A1C (at 10 months post-op) was 5.7. The lab paperwork says that 5.7 is considered pre-diabetic; however, my endocrinologist told me he considered me in complete remission and I didn't even need to bother taking my blood sugar anymore. Did they do a fasting blood sugar that said you were "pre-diabetic" or an A1C that they felt you were "pre-diabetic"? A1C is a rough average of the last 2 to 3 months. Things like illness can run your blood sugar up, so it is possible you just had an odd time somewhere during that 2 or 3 months. You might wait 2 or 3 months and then ask a dr to run A1C and see where it comes back. Likely nothing to be concerned about but drs are being pushed to recognize "pre-diabetes" more often now rather than waiting until you are officially diabetic so sometimes overly cautious.

    Looking for support

I decided to only tell my best friend and my husband. I felt like everyone else would be judgmental and add in a lot of negativity. It took me a lot to get to the point where I was ready to do the surgery. I feel like unless you have truly struggled with obesity for years, you have no right to comment on it. I have friends and family who have battled that same 10 pounds for life, or maybe gone up 20. They have no idea what I'm dealing with, even though they think they understand. I don't need to hear their comments. I thought going into surgery that it should feel really positive to me. It's actually a really healing thing. I've been working on a lot of other areas of my life and this is one that really needs healing and a fresh start. This is a good thing for me, not something bad or negative. By leaving their feedback out of the process, I was able to go into surgery with a much more positive attitude. Maybe I will tell them some day. Maybe I won't. I have yoyo dieted for years. I have done very low calorie diets where I lost a rapid amount of weight at once. So they have seen me do it before. I don't think their first assumption is that I had WLS. Many of my family members saw me doing the pre-op diet which I told them was a high Protein liquid kind of cleanse. LOL. One of my family members wants to give it a try! I think even when I'm a few months post-op, the surgery is over, and the weight is coming off, I won't care so much if they find out. I will be able to deal with them then if I have to because I will FEEL and know the results. I will easily be able to brush their negativity aside, because I will know the truth. Don't feel pressured to do it any other way that what feels right to you. If you feel you need their support and they will in fact be supportive, tell the appropriate people. If you feel like you need to keep it private for whatever reason you choose, then it is 100% acceptable to keep it private. It's a very personal decision and there is no "right" way.

5 days out and worried about port...

great question. I was wondering the same thing. I had surgery 7/25 and am feeling better but afraid of messing things up by overdoing it. My doc. said not to lift anything over 10 pounds for about 6 weeks. I look forward to responses to your question. Thanks for posting it
  17. A couple of days ago I passed another Mini-Goal. This one was real important to me. It was passing the lowest weight I had ever previously attained on a diet. For me, that weight was 212lbs. The last time I was there was after about 10 months on Nutrisystem, it was a real struggle to attain at the time and obviously one I was not able to maintain. My second lowest dieting weight was 215 and that was a few years ago while doing Atkins. Again it was about 8-10 months to get there and didn’t last long. This journey on LapBand and taken me about 4.5 months and feels so much better than anything before. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been a cakewalk – but it has certainly been a more rewarding program day to day. Next Mini-Goal is to get under 200, then its just 15lbs to get to my main goal of 185 and a normal BMI.
  18. I had a gastric sleeve in September 2014, four days later was taken to the ER and life flighted to Seattle 5 hours away. I had a leak in my stomach where when he removed part of my stomach and put it back together an area didn't staple all the way creating a leak in my stomach or a hole. I was very sick for over a year. It would not heal. After a year a surgeon said it's not healing on it's own so we can do open surgery where i remove most of your stomach to cut out the leak. It ended up being a by-pass surgery. Then after 6 months I fell sick again with fever, pain, etc and went to the ED. They found another leak in a different part of my intestines where I was sewn back together at some junction. It was a 10 percent chance of happening with a revision surgery. So, since then I have had many endoscopy's where they have attempted to go down stitch, cauterize, glue the hole to no avail. I have a chronic hole that leaks into the sterile part of my abdomen, I have been wearing a drain tube to collect the fluid the hole puts out of my abdomen for almost 3 years. Without being able to drain out the fluid I would become sick and possible septic again. It's been over three years of misery. I have been being treated at a large hospital in Seattle all this time. They cannot fix me. There has to be other people that have had these issues and has somehow been able to get it fixed. I am looking for specialists, ideas, anything. Thank you so much!!
  19. Congratulations Kat! Yes once approved it does go by fast. We will both be sleeved this month. My surgery date is Sept 10 th

    My Journey beggins

Hi my name is Maribel im 5.5"a mother of 3 beautiful kids and 24 years old. I have struggled with obesity since I was little. I managed to be healthy when I was 15 but then got pregnant by my first born then a year later I had my second child. I was very thin when I got and had my children but when my 3rd child arrived in 2007 I weight 160 lbs. After that I just blew up and never was able to loose the weight. I currently weight 271 lbs. The biggest ive been was 160lbs. So I decided to get the Vertical Sleeve and right now im in process of it. I already attended the Orientation and the Consultation with the Doctor. I start my classes on July 23, 10 and im so happy. Even though my husband and kids tell me that im beautiful I still feel uncomfortable. I just can't wait to do this and I hope that everything goes good for me.:thumbup1:

    Today is my 1st bandiversary

The average loss after one year is 50% of your goal. You are still way ahead of average. It's natural to quickly lose at first and those last few pounds are always the hardest. Lot's of things to try. Pretend you just got the band and go through the liquid/mushy/soft stages again. Make sure you REALLY are only eating 1300 calories a day, that's pretty close to maintenance intake and if you are missing accounting for a 100 here or there you won't lose. Try a different meal plan for a couple of weeks. Go on the South Beach diet or something like that, just to kickstart things again. Increase your activity. I have no idea what excercising 5 times a day means. Is that a full hour where your heartrate stays above 125 the entire time or a leisurely 10 minute stroll around the neighborhood, or somewhere in between? I started working out pretty hard the last 2 months and I have lost less than 5 pounds. BUT, I have gone down 2 inches in my waist and my arms and legs are noticably more muscular, so I know that I probably lost at least 10 lbs of fat. Gotta fight for every pound near the end. Keep it up!
  22. Well, I learned an important lesson that I've heard discribed by many other bandsters last night. I've been working nightshifts and they haven't been the best shifts......just lots of little problems that make the nights long and add to that I am tired. Wait....make that EXHAUSTED!!!!! So last night was no different. I've been planning all my meals, making sure I get my protien and last night I brought some chicken in gravy. Little bitty pieces of chicken in a nice sauce. Should be good for me and easy to eat, right? Well, I decide I'm going to eat up at dispatch, get in there and start heating up my lunch, sit there and tell Kimmie what a rotten night it's been, grab my lunch out of the microwave and start shoveling....yes, shoveling....my food in because I'm not even thinking. It's how I've always eaten when I'm stressed out. And then it hits.......the monster from Alien is trying to burst out of my chest, right under my sternum. Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow, ow!!!!!!!!!:omg: Oh, my lord, I didn't know that eating could be so incredibly painful! Kimmie kept asking me if I was alright and I kept telling her no, but it would pass.....at least I was hoping it would pass. Finally after about 10 min. the monster decided it couldn't get out and it settle down to a dull throb that really is still there now. I was just happy I didn't throw up because I felt like I could of. But I don't throw up. It takes a WHOLE lot to make me throw up.:guess I KNOW better than to eat that fast! I feel so stupid! It's one of the BASICS of eating after becoming a bandster. So I'm back to eating broth and protien drinks till my chest feels better. I'm sure I made it swell up with my stupidity. I guess you live and learn.:cry
  23. Banded 26 months, 10 of that at goal, and am now well under goal (I am down to 107 - 108lbs)

    Wondering Protein bars?

Power Crunch bars are delicious, they sell them at some Rite Aids, and at Trader Joe's and GNC and Vitamin Shoppe and some 24 hour Fitness centers. They are like wafer Cookies. I think they have about 10-14 grams of Protein. You have to read the labels carefully some are very high in calories and sugar. Look for low carb versions. Luna bars are good too but not the highest in protein. So far the Atkins bars are still the best, not too many calories or carbs. The daybreak bars (cranberry/almond and Peanut Butter fudge) and really good at under 150 calories and about 10-12 grams of protein.
