    Struggling With Guilt

It makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one struggling with this. I remember thinking selfish things when my mom lost so much weight from gastric bypass. She had been 300+ for over 20 years and when she started losing it was like she became a different person than how she was my whole life. I remember one particular time she was losing quite well and I was in one of my gaining times feeling really down on myself and she said to me "ha ha ha I'm nearly to what u weigh". Looking back I know she had just met a goal in her own mind of weighing what I did but in my mind I felt her accomplishment was my failure. I felt horrible that day an Thot to myself " yeah we'll we cant all go spend 20 grand and have surgery some of actually have to work". I know now and even knew then that she was having to work hard. I was just hurt and jealous because as i was getting fatter she was getting slimmer Here I am now the one wanting to have surgery. I only hope she can support me. The last time I was on a losing streak she was clear to let me know how I was not doing the healthy thing by bouncing back n forth all the time. It was like she had lost and become the "thinner" one and she didn't want me taking it from her. I want to stop the jealousy cycle and just be happy for both of us to be healthier and live longer. I just struggle with guilt for thinking wrong before

    Struggling With Guilt

I have a ticket on the "guilt train" too! I don't know what to say to people at work either. I am pretty close with a lot of people at work, and although I trust them, I don't want the preasure of them wondering how much weight I lost this day or that day...I told my boss and she will keep it a secret. as far as why I'm out of work, I'm telling them I am having adominal surgery and they will all think it's female related and then they won't ask questions...so in this instance, it's good to be a woman...lol don't worry it will all work out for all of us one way or the other!

    i'm an exercise-infomercial junkie!

The Gazelle! My parents bought that years ago when I lived in the house, I love that thing. Just reminded me they said I could have it now. I don't think it ever helped in weight loss, but it was a fun toy. I bought the Bean after a recommendation I found here, It was neat.. served it's purpose in helping the pain in my back.. then one of my cats popped it. I have NO CLUE how, it's a tough little thing. Woke up 2 days ago and it was deflated in the middle of the living room and the cats sleeping on it. I tried the ab-roller too years ago, didn't do squat. I have a gym at work that has a lot of real machines.. and it's for free!
  4. I was in the same boat. I couldn't eat solids and had a very real fear of them, too. It only took one or two bites and I felt terrible. So, I kept with my Protein shakes and ate what I could. I'm at 5 months and I would say I am still not on full solids, yet. I can't imagine eating a hamburger patty. Oye! My main go-to meal is diced up (really diced) chicken or tuna and throw it in salads with blue cheese. I don't do low cal/carb dressings, either. I have chili with sharp cheddar cheese about every lunch. Breakfast is a Protein shake. Morning snack is a V-8. Afternoon snack is prunes. If I don't think I am getting my protein in, I grab a shake. I pretty much eat throughout the day, but I also exercise a lot, too. I don't eat any breads. They make my stomach hurt. I have a wee bit of noodles occassionally, just to get them introduced to my tummy. Small bowl of ice cream a couple times a week. I don't worry too much about it. My weight loss have been better than I expected. I'm doing what I can and keep pushing myself. This has worked for me, perhaps it can work for you. Just do the best you can and it will come together.

    1st Fill Dissapointment!

Looks like you and I may be a few weeks apart from when we did our surgeries - mine was the 28th but I'm guessing yours was much earlier in the month since you've gotten your first fill. I'm getting my first fill on February 8th. My PA told me that she'd give me 2 cc's if I said I could eat a salad plate full of food and still feel hungry after/between meals. If my hunger level isn't that strong she'll give me 1 cc. She said it would take on average 3-6 fills before I hit the "sweet spot" and to expect some hunger/difficulty initially. The best advice is be patient and stick to the diet as best you can. Practice eating as though you're at your ideal restriction. Small bites, chew well, and pause between bites. Easier said than done, I know. The goal right now is just do your best. Temper your expectations and focus on getting a good workout routine going. Think of your long-term goals and try to stay motivated. I'm still feeling the effects of a swollen stomach so I've been able to eat small and do fine. It helps knowing I can physically get by with much less food than I thought I needed. My pre-band strategy was to shave off a couple hundred calories daily because I didn't want to "starve." Thought I couldn't function on 3 meals on salad plates but it turns out I do just fine. I gotta remember that when I hit bandster hell myself. Hang in there. You don't want to get too restricted too soon. Some folks get to the point where they can't even swallow Water and that sounds horrible. I'd rather go slow and steady myself. It took me years to get this fat, and it'll take time to get the weight off.
  6. Hi everyone!! I am very new to this, I just created my account this morning. Im not sure if this is the correct place to be posting this so if its not please let me know. Let me first start off by congratulating everyone on your weight loss!!! ( green with envy over here) I am 39 years old, 5ft. 6 and 216 pounds. I am wanting to lose approx. 80 pounds. I started researching WLS options about 2 months ago. I am still trying to decide between the plication and the sleeve. My story is no different than so many people I see in the different forums. I have tried just about every diet out there even the lovely cabbage Soup diet (gag). My weight has been up and down for the last 10 years. Im so tired of the yoyo and the emotional scars that come with it. Ok so enough of the pity party. What I would like to know is this: What made you decide on plication verses the sleeve? Or any other one How did you decide on what doctor to go to? Have you been happy with your choice? What about emotional eating? Stress eating? If there is a problem after surgery where do you go? ( assuming it was done abroad and you live in the states) Thank you in advance for any insight you may have.
  7. What is the matter with me? I had 2 great days. Then I go and buy icecream sandwiches because they are buy one get one free. what an excuse. Anyway, not even sure how many I've eaten. Plus I drank some wine. What the hell??? I lost over 100 pounds and have gained back about 30 in the last 6 months. I can't seem to put more than 2 good days together. Can't workout yet because I just had a boob job. Any advice?

    Still trying to decide

Hi and welcome. I'm 4' 11'' and now weigh ~174 pounds. I had the gastric sleeve surgery performed at Emory in Atlanta. I have to be honest the first couple days after surgery are the worst. But it all gets better. It also takes hard work to get the weight off. It just doesn't fall off on its own. And you will need support. As much support as you can get. The best thing is how it has changed my life. I was (keyword is WAS) a diabetic, had high blood pressure, and a few other minor health problems. Now I just take my Vitamins and supplements. Oh, and my happy pills. Other than that and the fact that I still need to lose another 50 pounds, my health is great.

    Got My Surgery Date!

I'm also in week 9 out of 16 for my weight management program. I have another nutrition class in October and a pre-op orientation class. I have a pre-op appointments with my surgeon and bariatric PCP in November. In addition to those two appointments I have more labs to get. So things are really coming along. I am still shocked that I even have a date. I have gone through the process twice already and was completely denied so I am still gonna be waiting for the actual approval to come through. Ugh my nerves are wrecked. Lol.
  10. I have been on this site for about a week. So, I am not new new, just new. Well I thought I would do an about me sort of thing-to introduce myself properly. Here goes. I am Joan. I live in a southern suburb of Chicago, Illinois. I am 32 years old, and I have three kids. I have a 1 year old baby girl, a 3 year old son, and a nine year old son. They are great, and I love being a mom to them. I am married to a neat guy, and have been for about 5 years. We have been friends since High School. I am a graduate student in Counseling, and am doing my internship now. About one year till I become a Therapist, treating individuals, couples, and families. Yea! I am getting my band on (hopefully) Thursday 2/10. The reason I am choosing this surgery is that like many of you...I have tried nearly everything else to no avail. I want to be able to live a more physically active life..and to be able to feel like I can go to the amusement park again and feel comfortable. My present weight is limiting my life, and I won't have that any more! So, that's me. Thanks, Joan

Difficulty meeting goals in the pureed/soft food stage

You don't have to push yourself into the pureed food stage. I had RNY gastric bypass 3 years ago. I was on Full liquids for the first 4 weeks, Pureed Foods for the next 4 and only in the 9th week did I transition to solids. So maybe your stomach is not quite ready and might need a little extra healing time. The three most important elements after gastric bypass surgery are meeting your Protein, Fluid and Vitamin daily requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting store fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Your fluid requirement is more than just Water. It includes the water in the protein shakes, milk, the water you take to take your Vitamins, the water component of Soups, drinks like crystal light, tea or decaf coffee, etc. It is important to meet this daily requirement to keep from becoming dehydrated. Also as your fat cells are eliminated they release chemicals and hormones that are stored inside. These need to be flushed from your system, through your kidneys and expelled in your urine. Your body needs fluids to make this happen. Not sure why you are feeling anemic. Your body needs two minerals: Calcium and Iron. But if you take these at the same time or near the same time, they will not allow your body to absorb them. So time separation is very important. For me I found that I took all my iron supplements at night just before bedtime. Whereas I took my calciums spread out throughout the day. That worked best for me. Without adequate iron, you will become anemic. A lack of B12 can also make you weak and tired. If you are taking B12 as a time release capsule instead of sublingual, that might cause the weakness.

    Banded 5/11

I'm so happy to find this forum... Already found answers to some of my questions! To start I am 28 years old.. can't tell you how many diets I've tried and either failed or gained all the weight back. I'm looking forward to finding support when needed and also hopefully able to give support.

    Stuck

Well count me as a another person who was sleeved in June and has hit a stall. I'm ok with it because it seems my body/skin is catching up to my weight loss since surgery. I was a little worried because I lost it so fast that my skin was getting pretty droopy and without losing this past week I'm noticing it start to tighten up. Just think, we are taking in so few calories our bodies can't hang onto it forever... if bodies could hang on to weight when they don't take in enough calories than there would be no such thing as a anorexia.
  16. I also brought up the subject of a liquid diet having read it here. Thinking it would be a two week thing. Well, he said "If you WANT to do a liquid diet then you can do HMR 500." So, yes a 500 cal. special diet that had to be purchased from the hosipital. I spent $230 and after 5 days of losing no weight (I had been losing on my own); being super obsessed with food (was not previously), and having a reaction to the shakes I gave up. I went back to my own diet. In 7.5 months I lost 52 pounds; before surgery.

    Confused about pre-op diet

I am on day 5 of my preop diet. It is required by my doctor for all patients regardless of BMI. I was very nervous that I would be starving and cranky. I feel that this whole process is a journey and at this point it was my turn to step up and follow the program. I am not saying that I havent had moments of thinking of food. However something has come over me in the last 5 days. I feel like I am GAINING CONTROL. For the first time in 13 years I have control over food. I am down 9 points already and it could be water weight or whatever but I am in control. Dont look at the preop as a chance to fail but a real chance at success.
  18. Guess who just bought her first pair of size 6 jeans? THIS GIRL! I'm so excited! I went to Marshalls last night to find some shoes but I had to try on at least 16 outfits first and a few bras (more on that later). I was specifically looking for a pair of skinny jeans so I could wear my boots with them. I grabbed 1 pair of 6s and 4 pairs of 8s. One pair of the 6s from the Limited was so tight but dangit I sucked in and buttoned those suckers. The 8s were all too big except for one pair so I tried them on again. They fit everywhere but had a little stretch to them. I was thinking maybe they were a 9-10 and I was going to see if I could find the same cut in a smaller size but NOPE upon reading the tag in the pants, instead of the little plastic piece on the hanger I find they are a 6! ME? A 6! Hells yeah! This is the size I always said I didn't want to be. You know...that crap that spills out of your mouth when you deny wanting to be skinny? "I'm going trying all the deserts. I never wanted to be a size 6 anyway!" Size 6 was me saying that the person was probably anorexic and way too thin. It was a word to describe a size I couldn't ever fathom myself being. Here I am though! I'm at 158.6lbs down from 282 (highest) or 271 (surgery weight). I'm 3.6 lbs from being "normal" and 8.6 lbs from goal weight. I'm so excited! I'm now looking for plastics. #1 Tummy tuck panni removal #2 Boob job! Speaking of boobs...had to find a new bra last night. Preop bra was 44/42 E/F depending on bra and now I'm 36 C/D depending on bra again. The thing is, there's no filler just skin. I could fill in for National Geographic photos for real. I need to find a bra with a little push up at the bottom but still doesn't have me spilling/puckering out the top or sides. Getting my hair dyed on Saturday and going to an "ugly christmas sweater" part that night. I'll be sure to post lots of pics as my avatar was 16lbs heavier than I am now. BTW got out of Marshalls with 1 bra, 2 sweaters, a pair of jeans, 2 sexy undies (you're welcome hubby), and a godiva dark chocolate bar for under 70 bucks. SCREW YOU LANE BRYANT!

    Stuck

I am 5 weeks out and I'm doing one egg, a Protein Shake, with a little Isopure thrown in, 1.5 ounces of tuna and maybe a sugarf-free pudding and 1/2 cup of skim milk and I'm hitting about 400-450 calories a day and I been the same for a week. I have been walking 1-2 miles a day, water walking 1-2 hours a day and lifting weights or doing the gazelle. Yesterday I did the Firm interval training (not at the same impact as on the dvd) and I did not do the stomach exercises, plus swimming and I was up a pound today. I also am having issues going potty, though I started back on metamucil. It happens, not happy about it, I'm hoping that in the next day or two I'll experience the nice 3 pound drop that I have been getting accustomed to. I usually stay the same a few days, and then struggle up and down a pound then I have a significant 3 pound drop then go back to the same old same old. It seems my body is doing the same darn thing it was doing pre-surgery when I was on on the high protein- low carb. Eventually my body is going to have to let go because there is no natural way for me to maintain my weight on less than 460 calories a day.

    Confused about pre-op diet

Lol. Starvation..not so much. It is a challenge though. The purpose of the pre-op diet is to reduce the body fat from the liver and the stomach, to shrink the liver and to overall increase the amount of Protein in your body that will help keep your muscle tissue protected once you do start to lose weight post-op. This way you're losing fat not muscle mass.

    Surgery Date

It truly is, the weight has dominated too much of my life. I'm ready to move on to new things and not always have this wearing on me. Tired of the diet roller coaster, I've gone from my highest of 217 and managed to get myself down to 156 only to go back up to 195! All the while running at least 3-4 times per week. I finished two half marathons last year and gained weight while training for them! My problem is food and portion control, I need help getting a handle on it. I truly believe this is my chance and I'm taking it, taking back my life!

    Stuck

I only lost 26 pounds since the day I had surgery - but then again when I weighed myself 6 days after surgery I was up 6 pounds so it's 32 pounds. I'm 5 weeks out. I think our bodies also need to get to used to the "new stages". I am behind most people on the food stages, I just hit pureed phase Monday and I'm not doing as well with it because I guess I got used to liquids and Pureed is a little harder on my body. I'm suppose to hit soft foods come Sunday and it's causing me anxiety. Good luck, it will come off though, I promise you, and trust me as positive as I try to sound, I still cuss under my breath when I read the scale and see no drop. Since this morning the scale was moved out a bit (my husband likes to stub his toe on it in the bathroom - or my son moves it) I internally blame it on it being out of whack. Of course, there are days I am tempted to reweigh myself throughout the day, after a heavy exercise, but when I do I am normally frustrated because I seem to gain a pound after lots of exercise. I need to just weigh myself after the first morning piddle or throw away the scale or hide it. The thing I normally do when I have this issue is measure myself. Seeing the inches melt when I measure myself makes me feel so much better.

    Gallbladder Issues?

Having gall bladder problems is very common after WLS. Most people end up having their gall bladders out. The told me in the hospital that rapid weight loss causes gall stones. Gall bladder surgery was much more painful that either my band or my sleeve surgery.

    Realistic expectations??

Everyone is different when It comes to weight loss. I have around 150 pounds to lose right now. The Doc told me I would lose almost all of it with Gastric and about 90 pounds with the LapBand. I still think with enough hard work I can reach my goal with the LapBand.
