  1. My ring size is a 6 now, which seems so tiny to me! I was a 10.5 at my highest weight, which is bigger than my husband's fingers and he is 6'10"!. My wedding rings need to be resized but I'm waiting until I'm sure this will be my final size. I can't wait to see how my rings look on my "tiny" fingers! I wasn’t working when I had my surgery but started a new contract with my old employer - different section - 4 weeks later. I told them I had a surgery & my boss just presumed it was a female surgery so he never asked for more information, which I was amused by & never corrected. The specifics of the surgery are really none of their business & you can say it’s private & you don’t want to talk about it. I just intimated the subsequent weight loss was me deciding to make changes & trying to lose weight to improve my health.

I just want to eat 😓

Im just thinking of food constantly! i don’t eat large amounts of course, i have good restriction but i eat small amounts of different things frequently. i don’t feel I’ve fixed my relationship with food, i still am infatuated with food. I don’t know how to fix this. i don’t just eat for sustenance, i eat because i enjoy food. i feel like this destines me to fail!! And i don’t know how to fix it. My weight loss is good but i know it won’t stay that way if i can’t fix this.

Before my surgery, Just my son and husband knew. It was my decision and I didn't want any one else's point of view to dissuade me. We used to be foster parents and the comments that we got from ' know it all and know nothings' really would anger and upset me. I live in a small town and other peoples opinions get back to you in one way or another. Since surgery it is now apparent that I have lost weight. A neighbour asked me and as she is large too, I told her the truth. It became a great conversation as she was also considering the surgery. My hairdresser was the same. My sisters live abroad and I have been to visit them this last month. I told them then. That's my tally so far.

I’m still in pre-op phase, but I knew the multiple appointments were going to trigger questions from family or others (wanting to know if everything is ok). I have driving restrictions so sometimes I needed someone to drive or I had to reschedule other things because of drs appointments. (My husband, kids and one or two close friends know). Not wanting to lie, but not ready to go into details - I decided to be … vaguely honest. So I answered questions as they were asked and volunteered as needed information. When asked about weight-loss… I mentioned I was talking to a nutritionist working with a medically supervised program. I just omitted discussion about the surgery part. When having tests… I just said it was regular follow up for a known issue (thyroid, blood pressure, etc) or my dr just wanted to rule something out. I’ll decide who gets to know what & when. I don’t want to invite negativity in and as much as I know some of my family means well and loves me (and friends) - sometimes the are not as tactful about sharing the opinion - so rather than invite that in… I just selectively share. If someone is curious (looking to gossip) they probably will get vague information. Or nicely told to MYOB. If it’s someone interested because they are considering surgery - I’ll gladly be open. If they are genuinely encouraging and there for me - of course I’ll share with them. I have had friends who shared openly and other who kept things very private. I think whatever works for you is the right way. Best of luck on your journey.

I only told close family and friends and that's it. Not for their support, as I was my own support and was absolutely doing this, but so they didn't ask "are you sick???" when I started to noticeably shrink. It's ultimately no one's business but yours. I like others suggestions of simply saying it's a hernia repair and when your weight loss is noticeable, you're following your new dietician's plan. And then change the subject.
  7. I'm sure it will help a lot! I have read your enzymes can go up with rapid weight loss. It has happened to some people here, but it's temporary. Good luck on your surgery! Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre op diet- messing up/cheating

That’s wonderful. I am in a similar boat. Im still pre-op and I have lost some weight so my numbers are back in the normal range but boarder-line and the last abdominal palpitation indicated improvement in size. I’m hoping this surgery will help that process along to resolving. Thanks for your reply!

    I really hate stalls!!!!!

I don't have monthly follow ups. I had my 2 week in the office, then the 1 month on the phone, my 3 month will be on the phone, my 6 month will be in the office, and my 1 year will be on the phone. I asked if I could come in the office and not do phone check ins and they said no, that they do it over the phone. And I asked if I could at least have check ins more often and they said no, that it isn't necessary. So I'm kind of on my own to monitor my weight. And as much as I want to limit how often I weigh, I find myself still weighing too often.

I didn’t tell everyone beforehand but as people ask me now how I lost weight I don’t want to lie and say I did it on my own because I feel like that may make them feel like something is wrong with them when they can’t do it. But that’s just me. It is true that the reason we lose is because of how little and what we eat post op and whatever exercise we do so I guess it’s not really lying to just leave out that we are able to stick to it because of the surgery.

I have never lost a lot of weight before… so I hope it will be obvious;). I won’t care after it’s done telling people - just afraid of telling people before for some reason. Maybe it’s because I came close once before and the opportunity was taken from me (soap opera story) and I am scared this time something will happen again. I have insurance coverage for bariatrics this time so it should happen! I know I will need to say something for the time off after surgery so people will know by the time I have the date. I just don’t know when right now. I will have to go through an endoscopy in august, maybe then.
  12. Definitely go at your pace! For me i started crossfit a few weeks after surgery and its definitely been my most consistent form of exercise over the past 3 years. and 100% the reason i look the way i do. And when you do decide to up your caloric intake, just remember to stick to healthy choices, and give yourself time to figure out your calorie range. There is no perfect formula. Everyone is different. i also completely understand the mental side of all of this. upping my calories was harder mentally then any of my runs lol. it is scary. but one thing i am sure of, if you exercise an hour a day 5-6 times a week, it will be hard to gain weight back. find something you love and stick to it. i highly recommend crossfit to anyone regardless of age, weight, size and so on!!. congrats on your loss so far and keep crushing it!

Only if you want to tell, then tell, otherwise it's none of their concerns. You can just tell them you're having a hernia repair or getting your gall bladder removed. And post surgery you're just trying to eat healthy and lose weight. That's all. Clearly, it can be challenging having to tell everyone. So you do you.

    Before and After Pics

I am in the 9th week post surgery and down ALMOST 40 lbs. I'm 62 yoa and work out 5 days per week (elliptical and weight machines at Snap Fitness for about 45 min).
  15. Yeh I understand the mechanics behind it. It's just when I did incorporate strength training, my weight loss stalled. It could be a matter of fact a temporary thing or that stall and weight training coinciding but I yeh I did stall. And frankly it started affecting me mentally how I won't reach the goal etc etc etc. Plus schedule for hectic and couldn't get into the routine. I think once I lose another 12lbs and i am hovering around 25 BMI, I'll feel more mentally equipped to kick start a more enhanced routine. For now I stick to my daily 45 mins to an hour long walks.

I told my boss as soon as I decided, BUT never told her it was WLS. I was also have esophagus repairs done, and a hernia fixed. So I told her that part, my appointments didn't make me miss work because they had early and later appointments. I only missed work for a few hours on 2 different occasions up till my surgery. I had lost a large amount of weight many times before so it is not that surprising for me to be loosing weight so I knew people who knew me long term wouldn't think much of it other than me just loosing weight AGAIN! Very few people in my life know, maybe 10? I don't honestly know if I am ashamed of it or just prefer privacy. I have lost 100+ lbs 4 other times in my life so I guess if people knew I had surgery they would be judgy and I don't need all that! Everyone I did tell was very supportive. Logical comments, like what about the risks? How does it effect you long term? Fair questions, nothing like "why would you do that" " just go on a diet".. etc. You have to do what you feel comfortable with; tell, don't tell. Whatever makes you happy!

    Always Hungry?

I also felt a lot of hunger post surgery. Everyone told me I was wrong and wasn't actually hungry, but I know my body: I was hungry. I talked to my surgery team and they said it does happen to a small number of people - they don't lose their hunger hormone. My bariatric therapist said it's especially common in people with bipolar disorder, which I have. Eventually I was put on metformin and topamax, which have both helped. BTW, I was losing weight the whole time, and I had good restriction, but being hungry all the time was MISERABLE. Talk to your surgery center. There are options.

    measurments

I've definitely heard of people staying the same weight but having their measurements shrink. That seems to be the norm, as far as I can tell. But I can't figure out why my waist is growing. Stupid measuring tape being mean to me!
  19. You weight loss won't stall from working out intensely. In fact, you will burn more calories if you build muscle because it's the muscle in our bodies that burn the fat. While muscle is denser than fat it is incredibly hard to GAIN muscle weight, especially for women, and especially once you get past 40. While you might increase your muscle mass by a few pounds, this should be more than offset but the calorie burning effects of muscle. And building strength is important because we lose muscle mass when we lose weight quickly, and that is not good. Definitely incorporate strength training as soon as you are cleared by your surgeon - about 4-6 weeks out for most people.

    July 2022 peeps!

I was hoping I was not the only one! I have been looking into ways to have a panniculectomy covered by insurance. I know I need focus on the here and now of VSG and losing the weight first but sometimes it's tough not to plan for later. I'm on day 4 of 14 of the pre-op "liver shrink" diet the first couple days were hard today has seemed easier so far.
  21. Amazingggggg - Truly. I posted something similar today having lost 100+ lbs and it's truly liberating a feeling. Like you said, these surgeries truly open a whole new realm for us. Things that seemed impossible to achieve seem right around the corner to grab. I still have a long way to go. And I would want to lose a little more before I go the route of upping calories and building definition. I know once you start working hard core your weight loss stalls for the obvious reasons. So I just mentally want to be at a certain numbers before I let lose and incorporate heavy duty strength workout. Once again congrats and keep at it bruh.
  22. Another year has gone by and im still going strong. Ran an official half marathon this year and put up some PR lifting numbers as well. Ive hovered at the same weight now for the last 18months. 225-235 range depending on what im focusing on. I will be running my first ultra marathon in November. 33 mile trail run. Should be fun. Other then that, I continue to try to put good things in my body. I still have restriction and i still refuse to eat until im overly full. Got engaged this year and bought a house. Two things i dont really think would have happened if i never went through with this journey. Overall i am happy and healthy. Any questions feel free to ask!! Cheers to another year.

    Stop loosing WAY too early

In my case, I started losing again by eating MORE calories. I'm 62, so that could be a factor. I also spend 45 mins at the gym 5 days per week doing elliptical and free weights. I lose about 2 lbs per week as long as I keep my calories under 1200, which allows me to eat pretty much whatever I want. My program allows carbs - as long as they are whole wheat or brown rice or vegetables/fruit. I am at week 9 and am down nearly 40 lbs and 2 dress sizes and have loads of energy. It's so nice to be able to give MYSELF a pedicure! lol.
  24. The scale hasn't moved in about 8 days. I haven't gained this time, which I'm very happy about, but I haven't lost either. I fluctuate between the same 2 pounds (between 343 - 341). I have PCOS, and I was told that will make it harder and take longer to actually lose the weight and keep it off. But it's REALLY frustrating and annoying. It's harder to lose the weight now than it was when I was just doing keto. I read that we're not supposed to do keto after bariatric surgery, but MAN it's tempting!!! I know this will pass, I know this is normal, but I HATE that it's normal. I'm 2 1/2 months out from surgery, so I'm not surprised I'm getting hit again. But UGH!!!!!
  25. I have been wanting to create a topic on my weight loss journey after having reached BMI of under 30 and not being obese anymore but thought to wait it out so I can cross off other aspects from the checklist. This morning I weighted - 133.2 Lbs. Height is 4' 10.2" (148cm). BMI 27.6. Heightest weight was 234 lbs, of which I lost 15lbs pre-Op and another 10 lbs during the pre-Op diet. I was at 210 lbs on the day of the surgery. So officially I have lost 100+ lbs of my highest weight ever 🥳 This is the lowest I have ever been ever since I remember. Last lowest I remember was 137lbs, more than a decade ago, post Dr. Bernstein's weight loss program. But that weight loss program kick started the vicious cycle of yo yo dieting and wrecked metabolism, which I hopefully isn't the case anymore with much more controlled healthy eating habits. I just wanted to thank so many of the folks out here who have been extremely supportive not only on the open forum but also in DMs. During the ever so confusing beginning months, this forum came to help time and again. If not for this one, I wouldn't have known about the 3 weeks stalls. Clinic never covered this aspect of the weight loss and I definitely would have freaked if not for the knowledge I consumed out here. So thank you everyone for making this community friendly, supportive and helpful. I still have a bit more to go to achieve my goal and get under 25 and hopefully maintain around 22 or 23ish of BMI, but I'll cross the bridge when and if happens. For now, just enjoying the joy of my current physical and mental state of mind. This surgery truly has blown a new life within after wanting to give up on it time and again in the past. Truly grateful for taking in the dive. 🥰
