  1. Today I am 4 1/2 month post op. The past month has been a struggle but I have finally reached two of my goals. I am at 75 lbs. lost and I broke the 200's and now I am in wonderland! I haven't been here since 10 th grade! My stats: Pre op : 270 Today: 195 Current pic was taken at 203 but I didn't want to get dressed today to take another! We are expecting 6+ inches of snow today...blah.

    ex husband frustration

You have keys and are not divorced yet, so it's still your legal home unless there is a restraining order out against you. I like the idea of taking someone with you who can video what happens while you are there. Take someone who would not be intimidated by him in case he suddenly shows up or is actually there. If he denies you entrance to your own home, go get a sheriff's deputy. Good for you for getting out. No shame in your game - just do what you have to do. And yeah, it's just stuff if you have to walk away with nothing. I have started over twice. Both times (after 23 years and after 10 years) I walked away with my life, dignity, and peace of mind. You would be surprised at how little you need to get by.....kinda like camping with a roof and walls.
  3. After about a year of contemplating WLS (and 10+ years of battling with my weight) I'm now starting my journey of getting my life back and lightening my load in many areas of my life (pun intended). I have my first appointment with the surgeon and nutritionist on Thursday, 10/17/13 and I'm an emotional MESS! I'm scared and excited both at the same time, it's crazy! My niece (who is a hair stylist) had to talk me from the edge about an hour ago because my latest "thing" is what about hair loss? She said, "Auntie, you getting healthy and having you around for a long time is more important than you losing some hair. I can fix that, I can give you some hair and it will be beautiful, it's what I do, but I can't get another YOU and I need you! If you lose your hair, I'll cut mine too! Just pray on it and don't worry about stuff that hasn't happened." Well, after that I cried and laughed at the same time. Cried because it meant a lot coming from her (she's like the daughter I never had), and laughed because I could picture both of us with heads shaved looking like twins! lol Anybody else going through this roller coaster ride, or am I alone in my feelings???

    6 Month "Diet" Requirement

I have Blue Choice (BC's HMO) and they also required a "documented 6 month weight loss attempt" and I used the dietician on the bariatric team. Met with her once for initial weigh-in, and discussion of healthy food choices. She told me they didn't care if I lost weight, I was just not to gain any during the six months. After that meeting I weighed myself every two weeks (I work in a doctor's office so I did it at work) and email her the weight. I didn't work very hard at losing, and I was honest about my weights, and managed to lose 10 pounds. They would also accept Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, anything like that which was documented. You could use two different 3 month attempts even. Of course their customer service rep told me I would probably be denied and have to do the 6 month diet all over, because the dietician was out of network. He was wrong. Out of network just means out of pocket, at least in my case. The psych nurse and dietician were both out of network. I paid them and was approved. I was put on a pre-op liquid diet and lost 25 on that. The rest has been post-op.
  5. I had a similiar experience when I came home from the hospital. I was banded on 12.23.10 and on my first night I ended up being put back in the hospital for two extra days. My surgeon had no explaination for my dry heaves, nausea or pain. I have a very low tolorance so I was taking liquid vicodin as often as I could. Now I am much better but I am experiencing burping gas after I eat or drink. I am taking small sips like they suggested but nothing has changed. At my first doctor visit I was down 10 lbs. I don't have a scale at home or I am sure I would be on it everyday. Hope you feel better soon!
  6. I am 21 months out from surgery and have gotten pretty comfortable. I have fallen back into old habits and have gained about 10 pounds back. I know it is not much but I am scared it will spiral out of control if I don't get it under control. BUT, I am struggling with getting back to basics and getting the weight loss rolling again. Any advice on how to get back to basics and restart is appreciated. The bad thing about being almost 2 years out from surgery is that you can eat more than right after surgery and you are not as diligent and focused. I know I just need to do it but don't even remember where to begin, what to eat, what to do, etc. It feels so foreign to me... Please help!!!

Hey there!! Back with an update!Yay!! I just got back to my hotel and my surgery was done yesterday (2/10/17). I was a little surprised by how quickly everything went. I mean super duper quickly! But I did have a few complications as I have been cursed with hard to locate and even harder to hit veins. The anesthesiologist had to put my iv lines in. The shuttle take you in at 6:15am and you're in the waiting room with final paperwork stuff and final payment. They call you in to finalize your dietary plan and also do the EKG...then you wait until your room is ready. When you go to your suite, you quickly change in your gown and then the phlebotomist comes in to give you a little Xanax and does your IV. The surgeon comes in and chats with you for a moment and then it's show time. The procedure took less than 45 minutes and he not only staples but he also does a reenforced suture over the staple line to prevent additional complications. Past that, walking around after surgery went pretty smoothly and I still have "rolling" gas bubbles which are annoying beyond belief! Before they release you from the hospital, they have you do a tiny barium swallow to make sure your tract is completely clear and then you're released to go back to the hotel!! You have to keep walking...the more you walk, the faster the rolling bubbles will be relieved. I've got a final follow up on Monday and head back over the border by about noon that same day. Feeling pretty good (past those bubbles) and have no regrets whatsoever. The only major things I will also add: If you buy your meds that are prescribed there at [/url]OCC, it's about $190 with a credit card. If you ask the hotel shuttle driver, he can take you to a local pharmacy that will sell you all the drugs for about $70 bucks. Bring or buy a pill crusher. (There's a Walmart near the hotel or if you go to an offsite pharmacy...or pack one with you. I have the vitaleph shakes, but I also bought unjury Protein powder (online only) the chicken broth and the unflavored variety...to break up the chocolate/vanilla shakes...you will get tired of those flavors quick. The unflavored powder can be mixed with juices or just water! That's it!! Sorry for the novel!! But you're going to do great!!

    A word to the wise

I agree completely.. I think I underestimated how stressful it is for some of us post surgery.. Since my surgery in Jan, my husband filed for divorce (which is a good thing). My boss started harrassing me more and more with each lb I loss..It got so bad I started vomitting at work uncontrollably.. I ended up taking leave.. and the vomitting stopped.. I started taking care of my self with my exercise, mediation and rest.. And feel soooooooooooooooooooo much better. I EVEN quit my job.. My last day is June 10 and I start a new one on June 13.... So what I am trying to say is the same as hautemama.. Being successful with this band isnt about counting the calories, and chewing chewing chewing.. it is about taking care of ALL OF YOU.. otherwise you will struggle.... I am now working with a life coach and she is amazing.. I am down 80 something lbs and 4 sizes.. Had my second fill yesterday.... LIFE is good.. But because I chose to make drastic needed changes.. Good luck to everyone.. Traci
  11. First and foremost, Happy Friday! When I started this journey at 6'4" 380 lbs I never thought I'd get approved and just kind of went through the paces. When I learned about the 3 mo waiting period I figured it would be a good time to just endulge on everything I would potentially be giving up in the future. Month one I gained almost 10 lbs. I realized how stupid this was and that I'm doing it for all the wrong reasons! So, 4th of July I lit a fire under my a** and said that I WILL lose 20 lbs by my Pre-op shake diet (hoping to lose another 10 on the 14 day plan). Well I don't start the Pre-op for another 30 days and today I weighed 349! Now I have readjusted my goals to lose 50lbs by my surgery date. I can't believe how easy it was to lose 30lbs in two months when you have the right motivation! So here I go on part two of this, 10 lbs in the next month then 5-10 lbs on 14 day Pre-Op!!!!
  12. My name is Jennifer. I am 33 yrs old. I am from Springdale, AR. I was referred to my local bariatric surgeon by my neurosurgeon. My weight is killing my already broke down spine. I have had 5 back surgeries and their is nothing else they can do for my spine. I am just getting started with whole process of getting approved for the surgery. I have excellent family support. I am just very nervous about the whole process of getting to the surgery. The one thing I don't have to worry about in my insurance not paying, cause I called them and I am covered. I am really worried about the psychological exam. What is that like? I know I am ready for the commitment it takes after the surgery. If I would of had this opportunity a couple of years ago, I definitely wouldn't of been able to commit. I am ready to get out from under the diabetes medicines and the cpap machine. I want to take control of my health, I just need some help doing so. I want to be able to exercise without hurting. I guess now I realize I am not enjoying life, I am just living. I don't want to suffer the weight related issues my dad eventually died from. I had to watch him go thru multiple open heart surgeries and dialysis as a little kid and I lost him when I was 10. I fear I am may going to down that same road. Jennifer

Happy to Mentor - Almost 1 Year Post-Op

I was sleeved on 6/29/2015. I am in my second week and I went up about 10 pounds from the surgery. I am just getting down to the weight I was when I went into surgery. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I am just curious when others staring noticing a real difference in their weight?

    Too easy?

I'm 19 PO and the same here. Other than the sudden onset of hopefully temporary lactose intolerance not one problem. I think I took one pain pill after returning home the day after surgery. I am averaging a loss of a pound a day. Had the same concerns of whether or not the doctors did the surgery as directed cause I had no problems. I think all of the horror stories and "Wish I knew that before surgery" vlogs it was natural to be concerned for a lot of us. Thinking we were supposed to have issues but then not kind of threw us for a loop. Consider yourself lucky/blessed when you are a success!!!
  16. So I got sleeved on 10/17. At first I was having these insane hunger pains and always wanted to be consuming (I think it was boredom) but now I can barely finish anything and I only eat because I haven't all day and feel like I need to. I'm just like not hungry it's so weird. And when I do eat, I over do it because I'm worried about my lack of calories and Protein (I drink 2 premier Protein shakes a day). I guess I'm wondering if anyone experienced the same thing? How do I consume more calories? Without feeling sick? And will this pass? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  17. It is an unfortunate truth that 5-10 year veterans like yourself seem to be few and far between on the WLS forums. I personally would love to hear more about your experience and lessons you have learned at the different stages in your journey. How much weight did you lose? How long were you able to maintain it? What were the keys to your success? What are your thoughts on possible causes of starting to regain weight? What steps are you taking to reverse it? Do you find the challenges you are facing now similar or different to the ones that you faced early on in your weight loss journey? There are a lot of compassionate and knowledgeable folks here at BP. You're in the right place!!
  18. had my 2 week followup today and I was down 15 pounds. The day I came home from the hospital, I was 10 lbs. heavier than they day I went in!
  19. Hi there roxy, and thanks, luckily i have been pretty much pain free all the way through so far, apart from the 2nd week after surgery when i tried to get on my motorbike, it didnt go down well lol. Yes my diet at ate mo is just pureed stuff, my typical day consists of porridge for Breakfast, light custard or low fat low sugar jelly for mid morning snack, either some tuna in light mayo or mackeral fillets in tomato sauce for lunch or something like that, very small pot of light rice pudding for afternoon snack and then something like a soft omlette or baked Beans with some Protein cheese melted in for evening meal, it sounds like i'm eating lots but in reality i am only managing around 10 to 12 half teaspoons at each meal so its not lots

Anyone out there recovering from a slipped band?

I had my band slip in June and the doc took out 1/2 of the fluid. I gained 8 pounds in the 6 weeks after, then he started with a slight fill. But, unfortunatley I gained 10 pounds over the next 6 weeks. I got another fill this week and he put me back up to the fill level I was before the slip. I can definately tell a difference already in the amount of food I can eat. I'm glad to have the restriction again because it helps me control my portions. I still have to be careful about what I eat. Good luck everyone!
  23. So I lost 9lbs first few days after surgery, but I haven't lost anything else for 10 days now!!! Is this surgery not going to work for me???? What should I do??
  24. Ok.. So on Thursday of last week I was weighed at the surgeon's office for my post op appt - I lost a total of 19 lbs or 18.8 if you want exacts... so that put me at 303 ... Today I go to the general doc's office because of a huge lump in my hand where the IV was (I thought it was part of the IV that broke off in there... talk about scared - ended up being a clot) and I got on the scale there and I am exactly 304.... HOW IN THE HECK DID THIS HAPPEN?!?!?!?! I am still on liquids only even though I did have a bite of the Olive Garden Pasta e Fagioli Soup I made last night which came out more like a stew with no broth - so I didn't get to eat it (AND IT WAS GOOD .. just the one little taste of the pasta soaked soupy stuff... was awesome).. SO how in the heck did I gain a pound? My Dr. says it is probably just Water weight or something - but last week on Thursday right before i got on the scale I had just finished a 16.9oz drink - so technically that is one whole extra pound.. so really by my calculations I gained 2 lbs... HOW IN THE HELL DID I DO THAT?????? I live on Soups (with water, not milk made) and sugar free pudding and water and soupy oatmeal for Breakfast (plain oatmeal)... How can i have gained a pound or two... I am so upset! My biggest fear with this surgery was that it wouldn't work for me but now I am uber depressed that that may be a reality.... Please tell me - has anyone else had this happen? Should I worry? I still have over a month before my first fill - Thanks in advance for any thoughts/suggestions... Amy:think

    I am starving!

Thanks for all the encouragement and support! I still hate the hunger feeling but the support here makes me feel better. I usually drink the Protein shake in small sips over a 15-20 min period. I thought that was reasonable, but I am going to try to space out the ounces every hour. Sounds like it could work. Also, my bowel movements are fine. 2 yesterday and 2 today already. I keep telling my husband I can't believe I am even going because I haven't eaten any food! Lol I also have gone on small walks everyday around my neighborhood. I have a 3 yr old and a 10 month old so I take them for walks in their wagon at least twice a day.
