We had Sams and Costco but when it came time to renew, we kept Sams because they offer a military discount on their membership. They are both the same distance for us. I just got a Costco membership because I did the numbers and with the shakes alone, it will pay for itself in three months, with the price difference. I will pay for Costco and my husband will keep Sams. Sams Club has free shipping on orders of 99.00 or more.

researching doing gastric bypass need advice for family
pinkhiker replied to jennal10's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jenna I have about 100 pounds to lose as well. Im super excited though I've done my hw and feel great about my surgeon and the hospital and all the after care available for free afterwards (visits to the bariatric nurse at no charge, free support groups initiated by the bariatric program). Its also a baratric center of excellence and makes me feel good about the stringent requirements by the surgeons and hospital. -
researching doing gastric bypass need advice for family
healthyme1963 replied to jennal10's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Most surgeons have an information session where each of the procedures are reviewed and explained in great detail. I would suggest taking your husband to one of these meetings. He can also research the different procedures online. There's a lot of good information on the web. If your surgeon's office or local hospital has a support group for bariatric patients, this would be an excellent resource. You and your husband can actually talk to people who have had the different surgeries and hear their stories. I know my husband was nervous about me having such a major surgery, but he was also incredibly supportive. I did my best to educate him about the different options, which helped alleviate his fears. These boards are also very helpful. There are so many helpful people here. Good luck to you both. Keep us posted on your progress. -
ARE THERE ANY GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY CENTER'S IN LOUISIANA/TEXAS/MISSISSIPPI?
peacefullillypad replied to BackToBeautiful's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I am using Dr Scott Stowers at My Bariatric Solutions in Decatu Tx. They have a great website and they will do phone consults for out of town patients. -
@Ronnys gal I am sending you wishes for strength, healing and a bright future ahead. You have had more on your plate than 80-90 year olds and I am sure your doctor feels this may be your last best hope. And I will be following the developments as they come. You are part ofourworld-wide Bariatric Pal family and we do worry about our own😦💦😪!

9 Days post-DS Surgery problems with Protein Shakes
dachshundgirl replied to Randall Morgan's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I am currently on my pre-op diet and I’m not a fan of protein shakes. This is one item I’m using to get my protein in. It’s sold on Bariatric pal as well as Amazon -
9 Days post-DS Surgery problems with Protein Shakes
Sunnyway replied to Randall Morgan's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
There are numerous brands and flavors of high protein drinks, both ready-made and powdered. I find the plant-based shakes more palatable than the whey based. Try a variety of products. I never heard of the one you posted. Try Bariatric Advantage, Purely Inspired, Genepro, Orgain, Quest, etc. Walmart usually has a good selection or you can google search for "high protein shakes". ALWAYS read the nutritional data before buying. You want something with at least 20 g protein, and low sugar/carbohydrate. There are even high protein soup powders. I've tried the ones from Proti Diet, and Bariatric Advantage. Stay away from protein bars. They reinforce a snacking-candy bar habit. Unfortunately, they and other snack type food are sold on the bariatric merchant sites, but they are on the slippery slope to returning to old bad habits. -
I take five psychiatric meds a day. I have been seriously considering the Lap Band procedure, but I'm afraid it will affect how my meds are absorbed. I take some at Breakfast, some at lunch, some at dinner, so it's not just once a day. Does anyone have experience with this type of situation? Doesn't have to be psych meds, any kind of meds would be affected. This is one of my biggest reasons to hesitate making the appointment with the bariatric surgeon, that and potential for weight regain later despite best efforts. I don't want to end up on liquid only, or something like 1000 calories day. That seems too low to me. Thanks for any help you can give with this. Looking forward to meeting you all.

Medications and LAP BAND
NancyintheNorth replied to mrsshmoo8289's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
talk to your doctor, or take a free consultation with a bariatric surgeon. I doubt there would be malabsorption issues as the band doesn't prevent those types of issues. If all else fails, I've bought a pill crusher and will down those meds in one swift shot. Best of luck to you -

I also like the chewable calcium citrate from Bariatric Advantage. They come in 500mg each so I only have to do 2 a day. -

Medications and LAP BAND
mrsshmoo8289 replied to mrsshmoo8289's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, thanks for all the replies! I'm very grateful to all of you who took time to respond to me. Yeah, two of my meds (Effexor XR and Wellbutrin XL) are extended release, so can't be cut. I am also on a high dose of Abilify though and don't want any malabsorption problems. I have psychotic depression, and if I don't keep that Abilify level at 20 mg, I can't get through the workday. Definitely a question for my PCP, pdoc, and bariatric surgeon. But I also wanted to know peoples' real experiences. It's one thing for a doc who doesn't have a lap band to tell you something, but another to talk to people who have been there. -
My Mom was all for me getting the LapBand until..........
TQUAD64 replied to Rdy4ANewLife's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes, I have heard this to be true as well. My surgeon and bariatric team, plus counselor warned me about this. And I believe Oprah did a special on this last year with Carnie Wilson. I believe if you have a strong support system you will be okay.:w00t: -
Does VSG really need Bariatric vitamins vs. regular chewable?
Airstream88 replied to Seraya's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My NUT explains it this way to both her RNY and VSG patients - Most over the counter vitamins are only 50% absorbed by normal people. Bariatric patients would only absorb 25% - so you need 4x the dose. When you look at it that way, Bariatric vitamins don't really cost more than over the counter since you don't have to take as many. Also, vitamin deficiencies take years to show up in blood work. I prefer to take Bariatric formulated vitamins knowing that I'm getting the maximum absorption. 95% for Nutrametrix Isotonic powders you mix with water. -
Does VSG really need Bariatric vitamins vs. regular chewable?
Dairymary replied to Seraya's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I had my surgery over six years ago and have never taken a single bariatric vitamin. Just regular multi, calcium, iron, D3 and sublingual B12. I have annual bloodwork done and my levels have been nothing but perfect. -
Does VSG really need Bariatric vitamins vs. regular chewable?
Pam_2-06-2017 replied to Seraya's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I take a regular multivitamin. I also take biotin, calcium citrate, omega 3 and b-12. None of them are bariatric and all ok with my surgeon. -
Does VSG really need Bariatric vitamins vs. regular chewable?
Seraya replied to Seraya's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I plan, while recovering for the first few months, to likely use the recommended Bariatric vitamins then once fully healed (and a bit past that for good measure), I'll likely switch to something that has the necessary vitamins but cheaper. -
Does VSG really need Bariatric vitamins vs. regular chewable?
HeatherS. replied to Seraya's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My Surgeon explained that gummy vitamins have a higher risk of getting stuck when you're healing, and that's the last thing you want. Other than that, get the right amounts, and you're in good shape. Both the nutritionist and the Dr. agreed that the only true advantage of the bariatric vitamins is convenience. -
Weak Bariatric Vitamin Brands? Doesn't Make Sense...
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Midwest Grateful's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Any Bariatric vitamin should meet the ASMBS guidelines. More of anything does not always mean better and less does not always mean worse/lower quality. I personally take the ProCare 1x daily capsule (iron free, per my doctors orders based on my lab work) and have had perfect labs since surgery. I tolerate them well and know they meet the ASMBS guidelines. -
Emotional Side of Bariatric Surgery...Its real
Kimcamm posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My surgery was March 31,2015 and to date I am 110 pounds down. I started at 341lbs and today I weigh 229. Now I should be over the moon happy. My weight loss has been awesome, however I realize more now than ever there is so much more to losing weight because I feel more alone today than I ever felt at 341lbs. I'm sharing this to help anyone thinking about bariatric surgery to understands that the reality of not being able to eat through your feelings is hard. Worth it but hard. I just have to sit in the feeling of loneliness or whatever it is until it passes or I can sleep it off, even exercise helps but once the coping mechanism of overeating is gone things get real......fast. I knew this was a component of surgery and I thought I was prepared but I wasn't. Soooo one day at a time. But the struggle is real. -
I can't comprehend it all, not first time I have heard of Joey Chestnut, may he never have Bariatric Surgery, it would rupture all surgical work and it would be a one-way ticket to DEATH CITY!
-
I hope some of you are able to appreciate the humor in this. For others I know the struggle is no laughing matter but i must digress.

I too am a single mother and my insurance will not cover any bariatric surgery (along with a seeing a nutritionist) they cover nothing. For a US procedure the cost is far greater than the Mexico cost. I have been saving since 2005 and I am heading to Mexico and I took a small loan as well. While I worry about extra skin and such I know this will change my life and for the better. I will be healthier and get back to where I need/should be. Any doctor or location comes with risks because each person is different. Go where you feel comfortable and that works best for you. Best of luck

Yep, heading to Mexico on May 10th here. I mainly decided to go because my insurance wouldn't cover bariatric surgery for me & it was cheaper then paying for it out-of-pocket in the US. But after researching I am even more happy with my choice. They just have so much experience in Mexico!

vitamins, calcium other than the chewable kind?
jen120 replied to fefebutterfly's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I agree that Bariatric Advantage are horribly chalking and make me gag. I switched to One A Day Kids Complete (Scooby Doo). To me they taste great and I look forward to taking it everyday. For calcium I do a generic brand of Viactiv. 2 a day. The chocolate chews taste like tootsie rolls to me so it is a little treat as well as a Vitamin.
