I got extensions because I had lost so much hair and I was so self conscience of my thinning hair and bald spots.
  2. Whether or not you are in a serious relationship, Valentine’s Day means candy is everywhere. If he or she has not gotten the message that candy is not part of your weight loss surgery diet, your significant other may give you a box of chocolate truffles to Celebrate your relationship. That box of chocolates may be the least of your worries before and on Valentine’s Day. Your workplace might have candies out in the reception area and staff breakroom, and your friends and coworkers might pass around valentines with candies inside or a few batches of beautifully decorated cupcakes and Cookies. All those temptations can get to you, so how do you cope?

    LOST

I just looked it up. At 6 months out, I'd lost 61 pounds (86 if you count the 25 from pre-op, but I'm not counting them since we're just talking post-op weight loss!) Everyone at my program told me I was doing incredibly....and to focus less on the numbers and just to stick to my plan...
  4. Hello guys, Im 8 days post-op and Im so tired of the liquid diet! I get hungry every 15-20 minutes! I was forced to go back to work after a week home, so I was so weak at work today! NONE of my coworkers know I had surgery, so I cant even complian at work! I know this will get better but Im so discourauged right now! To make matters worse, IVE ONLY LOSS 2 pounds since surgery! PLease tell me it gets better! UUGH and those nasty Protein shakes! Im about to focus on becoming a millionaire and design a Protein pill! lol

    Goals I've Met

Congratulations on the 100 pounds, and on the success of your journey. It isn't just the weight loss, it is the attitude and health that goes with it. A great story...so far! I await the sequel.

    Goals I've Met

Today I realize that I've lost 100 pounds from my first visit to my surgeon's office. Woo-hoo! Then I started thinking about other goals I've met. First big one - DO SOMETHNG ABOUT MY WEIGHT!!! Start the process by talking to my PCP and getting a referral. Initial weight at surgeon's office - 326. Told I had to lose 10% of my body weight to around 290 before he would submit it to insurance. Weight 1/1/08 321. Was in "twoterville" by the end of February. Official weigh-in on 3/27 287 pounds. Next goal was not to gain weight back before surgery. Surgery date 5/19/08 - weight 270. By end of August my BMI said I was obese - no longer morbidly obese. Today down 100 pounds. Faster than I thought it would happen with the band, but I'm keeping the calories down and exercising more. I still have goals to meet but I'm doing pretty darn good! I'm following the rules (not perfectly as far as eating some ice cream or chips once in a while), trying to eat around 800 calories a day, and have been walking a mile or more around the inside track at the school. Some other goals are to join the fitness center, be in onederland by the end of the year, be able to shop for regular sized clothes, become just "overweight" and not obese, have plastic surgery, and finally to be in my normal weight range and not even overweight. No particular time frame but hopefully by the end of 2009. Sorry this is so long, but I'm really reflecting a lot today on my weight loss journey. I'm so thankful for the information and support I receive on this site. Healthy Grandma

Help! I SOO want to cheat!!!

I just started my diet a couple of days ago. I know what your going through. My family decided that they're going to make a huge dinner for superbowl sunday and I know its going to be hard but I keep telling myself that I can't start a healthy life if i'm not willing to give up the unhealthy one. I open up my pantry and look at all the Snacks and tell myself no. I know that my surgery date is close (feb. 12) and I know that sabotage will only make my journey more difficult. Goodluck. I hope everything goes well and that you have an amazing weight loss journey
  9. Congratulations! I just passed my 3 month anniversary also (surgery on July 10, 2009). I've lost 65 pounds too. I'm not sure about your skin but mine is terrible! I'm not sure it will shrink because I was chubby even as a child and have been overweight ever since. I'm going to start a good core workout next week and trying to use weights now. I'm hoping that'll help because my insurance won't pay for plastic surgery of course! I'm really excited and happy about my weight loss and my experinece so far! You're done wonderfully! Awesome job!:blushing:
  10. Hi all. I have not been on here for some months. Personal issues that I will not go into here, but I had my sleeve on 11/29/10. So far I am very happy with the way I feel. I was taking Lasix to get rid of excess fluid pre-surgery, but my dr. did not want me to continue it post surgery. I was alarmed at first, because, of course I started retaining fluid and actually put on 5 lbs, from surgery day through 5 days post op. He was right in his decision, because I would have been dehydrated had I taken it. With that said, after I lost that 5 lbs of fluid plus an additonal 10 lbs during week 2, there has been no further change in weight. On monday I will be 3 weeks post op. I have been getting in 64+ ounces of fluids, getting in all my required 60 grams of protein, walking 1+mile on the treadmill for a week now with no further change. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal?

    My hair!

I know I've seen posts related to hair loss before. I've not changed my eating habits (I.e., my protein intake is perfect) and I've been taking my vitamins and even 500 g biotin daily. I'm a little over 5months post-op....anyone dealt with this? My hair is falling out a lot and very thin on my head:-(

    Old clothes

I've replaced my entire closet about four times since starting this last December. I decided early on that my new life was too important to continue to wear clothes that didn't fit right. As things began to get to be too large, I set them aside. When there was enough to fill a trash bag or two or three, I took them to Goodwill, or to a homeless shelter in my town, and even to a coworker whose father and brothers are big guys. Donating them made me feel good, because all my stuff was in great shape and had a lot of life left in them. I told the coworker to do what she wanted with whatever her family couldn't use, including putting them in her next garage sale. She was delighted, because guys used clothes at garage sales tend to be stained or ripped or worn out. She was happy to get nice stuff from me. Then I bought new stuff on sale in various places, most often JC Penney (their online site has the best selection and some killer sales.) When THOSE clothes got to be too big, I started over, and did the same thing, donating what I didn't need anymore. I've gone from 3XL and 4XL shirts down to size Large, and my 44-46 waist pants are down to a 34 inch waist. To justify the cost of buying more clothes, I started figuring out how much money I WASN'T spending on food. Groceries, restaurants, junk food and Snacks, soda, beer - the repetitive costs of that much food was enormous. After banding, my food expenses are SO much lower, I have a lot more disposable income. I figure I can spend that money on new clothes. They make me feel right, I look great in them, and it helps me adjust to my new life. Now that my weight loss has slowed way down, I'm not needing to shop like I was. So it's all tapered off, and I had a great journey along the way. And as for those jeans you're waiting to buy? WalMart has great jeans that wear well and cost less than $10 a pair. Check them out. Dave

    Weight Loss Question...

I think u are doing great, this isnt a fast weight loss solution and this should have been explained to you prior to surgery. Weight loss till u get to your sweet spot/full restriction with fills, will depend on your willpower mainly and wise choices with food and exercise ... the average weight loss is normally 1 to 2 lbs per week, u seem to be bang on target. This time post op up to 6 weeks is for healing and getting used to the new eating regime so dont be too impatient u seem to be doing fine as u are

    Hi! New in Arkansas

Hi all, Thanks for the support and warm welcomes. I really appreciate it. Lenore, Good luck with the weight loss center. I'd love to hear how your appt went. Newday, Send me a pm sometime. I'd love to hear more about you and where about in AR you are. WOW!!! Congrats on the 86lbs!!!! That's wonderful!!!! You're certainly an inspiration to me and give me hope that I CAN do this. Well it's been just over a month now since I started and I'm doing really well. This weekend I started exercising again. My body is changing so much just by doing this 6 month diet. I'm already fitting into clothes that I couldn't wear a few months ago. I don't crave the carbs like I used to and for that I'm SO happy. Those that know I'm doing this to have WLS ask me how I can stick to this so much and I just tell them that I have no choice. I really feel like I HAVE to do this because if I don't, my future doesn't look so bright. However, I already feel a TON better with the little bit I've lost so far so I'm well on my way I think.:biggrin2:

    Hi! New in Arkansas

Hi JenJen, I too got fed up with my PCP. Hes done a sleep study, several blood tests and recommended weight watchers. Still I have not lost weight. Hes had me on thyroid medicine...though my thyroid is perfect, a diaretic, acid reflux medicine, and a pre diabetic diagnosis X medicine all of which have had absolutely no effect. So a woman at my work turned me on to a weight loss clinic at a nearby hospital that fast tracks you to surgery. I go to my orientation on Tues. I feel like Im finally moving forward. Especially since Ive asked my PCP about the surgery only about a hundred times and he always said: " Oh well lets try this and if it doesnt work then well look into surgery..." then when it didnt work hed say it again. Talk about frustrating! Seems liek the only way we girls can get what we want is to do it ourselves right? Glad to hear things are working out for you!

Dear Friend - I want you to have a decent life too. The band is a wonderfult tool to help you stick with a good healthful way of eating. Of course you have been on every diet and wgt loss program out there - we all have. It's not your fault that you cannot stick with a restricted calorie diet or you gain the wgt back. Diets don't work. Goolgle the last sentence and you will find a wealth of information as to why they don't. I don't know how old you are - I am 49 and decided that I didn't want to miss out on life anymore. And I didn't want to loose the wgt only to live in fear of it returning - which it always did. Banding may be slower than The Gastric Bypass - as far as loosing wgt - but it is so much safer and healthier. If you are determined to never go on another diet again, in my opinion, you will not regret getting the lapband. The band, if used correctly and to it's maximum performance (appropriate fills) - will aid you in restricting calories, also you will not be hungry while doing so. In many larger people - you will find that surgeons who have been an advocate of Gastric Bypass will first band their patients in order to get them to a healthier wgt before doing the bypass. You may experience some issues that lower bmi patients do not - but your surgeon will be aware and will watch for this. God Bless... Patti

You have lots of losing time if you are following your program well. I know some people who stoppe their loss at 6 months out as that's when they stopped following the rules. Keep the junk out and you'll do fine. It will be harder and skier to lose the next half though so patience is a virtue. If you aren't exercising, it's time to start
  18. Hello all. All of a sudden, I’m struggling with self control regarding sweets. Mind you, I have lost 41 pounds during the 6 month medically supervised weight loss that my insurance required me to have before approval for WLS. I don’t know if it’s because mentally I think “this is my last hurrah” before I buckle down and do my two weeks per op diet. I’m just needing some words of wisdom so if anyone has any, I’d love to hear them! Thanks in advance. [emoji17]
  19. Okay so I have Aetna insurance and I am doing the three month program. I am currently on month 2 (about to be on month 3). In November (first month) my nutritionist weighed me in at 270lbs. I have also been seeing an exercise therapist that also weighs me and in November she weighed me in at 271lbs. At the very beginning of December my exercise therapist weighed me in at 271lbs. I just had my second nutritionist appointment today 12-22-10 and she weighed me in at 280lbs! I've gained 9lbs in December! Yes, I am definitely going to blame it on the holidays. I have been to SO many Christmas parties and it's just hard. Now, I know I can lose that 9lbs by my next and final nutritionist appointment which will be in January. However, I am just a little worried that my insurance company (aetna) will see that 9lbs weight gain and deny me. I mean, I AM going to lose it by my next nutritionist visit and be at my original 270lbs. I am just worried about insurance. So my question is, has anyone gained weight during their weight-loss program but then lost it to be back down to their original level and still got approved? Thanks!
  20. Just wanted to share current weight loss. Started getting serious about my pre op diet mid September and was around 318, was 302 just before my October 8 Sleeve. Today I got on the scale and was 278! Love this sleeve! 40 lbs Baby!
  21. Final visit with NUT today and showed a 1 pound weight loss...that was all I needed!!!!! All paperwork is being submitted to insurance this week! Don't know if it is going to take longer because of the holidays..(hope not). Now I've got to just wait for that call!!!!!
  22. I just found out today I was denied for a revision because even though it's for GERD my insurance says the GERD is a complication from weight loss surgery and therefore they won't pay. I hate insurance!

I'm 61 and today is the one-month anniversary of my surgery. Including pre-op losses, I've lost 43 pounds. My total for the first month post-op is 17 pounds, so not as fast as many others, but I'm fine with it--can't remember losing 43 pounds before in my life EVER. Very little pain from the surgery, no problem eating and drinking other than getting enough water in. I'm never hungry and wouldn't eat at all, probably, if not for the ever-constant need to get the protein counts up. Had no energy for the first three weeks; feeling more normal now if not perky. I'm also on half the diabetes medication I was beforehand. My blood pressure is "perfect" according to my doctor; if it gets any lower I'll be cutting my medication (that I've been on for decades). I have a long way to go and it hasn't been easy (the first couple of weeks after surgery kind of suck), but I have not regretted it for a single instance. I'm anticipating a better and healthier future. You can do this! Good luck.

I already need support on Day 2

It's good to know people do fine without having a pre-surgery diet. I feel much better and hope today wont happen again. Way to go on the weight loss!! I'm excited all over again reading this website! Thanks, Kim

I already need support on Day 2

Hi there, Although my Dr did not have me on a liquid protein type diet before my surgery I tried to do it because I see so many others on this board were advised by their Dr's. to do so. I know what you mean as far as how nasty most of em' are! After my surgery, what I found to be the most helpful way to do this was to buy protein powder from Wal-Mart in the vitamin section. They have vanilla chocolate mocha etc... I got the vanilla and made my own drinks in the blender. This way they are as thick or thin as you want, and they taste like a regular milkshake/smoothie! I am not kidding!! I would put frozen fruit in the blender, add a few ice cubes, half of a banana, some O.J. (or skim milk), the 2 scoops of pwdered protein, a bit of low-fat vanilla yougurt abd BLEND away! They are truly awesome, economical, and interchangeable. You can use strong coffee (decaf), and the vanilla powder, ice cubes and fat free cream and you have a frozen cappacino drink! If the pre-made stuff is gaggafying, try this and save a bunch of money for a nice day at the hair salon to feel great before you have your surgery!! You can do it girl........and we are right here for ya! Been there done that...!! And--- don't worry, you are not about to have to give up anything...you just eat it in much smaller quantities, because you are fuller faster! You definetly want to re-vamp the way you have been eating and go for more protein and healthier side dishes....veggies etc. But, when the need arises to feast on an old friend....go ahead and have a bite....you won't need much more than that and after a bit, you won't want to deviate from your new and good foods! It's just a good feeling knowing that the chocolate bar CAN be eaten if you need it!!! Good Luck......you CAN DO IT!!!
