  1. I have a question and I'm hoping to get some help on this. I have BCBSNC and I was looking into doing a revision from the Lapband to Gastric Sleeve. My Lapband is leaking fluid...I think. I haven't confirmed it but I have gotten 3 fills in the last 6 months and it is always at 5cc after the fill. So, that was my conclusion. I would like to know if the requirements for the surgery are the same since it is a revision? The requirements for bariatric with BCBSNC is 12 months (Long time). BTW I have gained so much weights its crazy. The band was working fine and it just stopped. Any input is greatly appreciated.

    Hungry

I am due for a fill, but can't get in to see the doc for another 3 weeks. This will be my first fill. Meanwhile, I'm really hungry and am not losing much weight. I'm being very careful but I've not been able to get to the pool for exercise. I have arthritis in my knee so they advised against walking outside the water. Any thought about what to do about the hungry thing or even the exercise that I'm not getting. I'm feeling pretty frustrated at this point and want the weight off so that my knee starts to feel better.

    It's worth it!!!!!

So I went and met with the personal trainer yesterday. She is very straight to the point and willing to help. She knows her stuff I must say!!! She is ranked in the top 50 personal trainers in the United States! So no big deal we are talking about nutrition and what I have to do. 1100 Calories sounds like ALOT  But like she broke it down for me and if I eat around five small meals a day.. that makes each meal only about 240 to 250 calories!!! :phanvan That sounds like NOTHING!!!! But I am real positive. The nice thing is she is not paper thin, but yet she looks really really good! So the dreaded question.. how much does she charge! I thought about 600 a month. I don't know how trainers work! HAHAHAHAHAHA Boy did I make myself laugh :whoo: For 12 weeks and four times a week the grand total is $2,280.00. Thank god for tax return season is all I have to say! To me her training me for three months is WORTH it. So I meet with her today we are going to just do measurements... the DREADED measurments! :cry But... I the good thing is I won't have to dread measurments or getting on the scale ever AGAIN!!!!! :biggrin1: I cannot wait to see myself in 12 weeks, just the improvements. You know she said something wise to me and it really stuck. "people think that eating does not control them losing weight, and it is the key factor, you cannot just do 2 hours of cardio and strength training and not watch your calories, and you cannot just do cardio and skip what you eat." Makes alot of sense from that perspective. She said we have to have ALL of the pieces of the puzzle. So true, and my whole life I have NEVER had all the pieces to the puzzle! All I can say is LOOK OUT WORLD CAUSE HERE I COME!!!!! :peace::peace:

    My.... how things have changed....

OK, it's been a minute since I updated on my progress/process. Not sure where I left off but I did get authorization from Aetna to see Dr. Pinnar for 1 visit. I felt like a mission was accomplished, so I decided to take on another mission. I went back online to see if I could find a Dr. closer to me and low and behold I did! Dr. Brian Long! And he was hosting a seminar that coming (last) Saturday! I went online and registered and I went to the seminar last Saturday! :cool2:! I was really comfortable with his team and his expertise, so I decided to move forward with my free consultation. I took the first available appointment, which was this past Thursday! I completed all my history online and when I arrived they were prepared and ready to see me. Well imagine my SURPRISE to find out that they had contacted my insurance prior to my arrival and had all documentation filled out and DR. LONG IS A PARTICIPATING SURGEON WITH AETNA!! Now, I am thoroughly surprised because Aetna told me there wasn't a bariatric surgeon in network which meant a higher payment for me and a BUNCH of headache in getting approved. Not taking my surprise for granted, I decided to surprise them and I had 3 years of documented, supervised, medical weight management records! (:waytogo:) amd they were soooooooooooooooooo happy that the "hard part" was done. Next they scheduled me for all of my pre-op testing (upper G.I., nutritionist, sleep study, psychologist, personal trainer, and lab work) all for the same day (June 5th) and she told me to have some dates in mind when I want to go to surgery when I come in on the fifth (:cursing:)!! I can't believe I went for a boulder blocking me to a sled taking me down the hill! GOD IS GOOD! I am nervous, but I am so excited to be taking control of my life and my destiny!!!! I will keep you all posted!

    Guilt in wanting VSG

Let her be aware that it is so difficult to lose weight when you're older that's why some people need a tool like the sleeve. Also I like the suggestion earlier of taking her along for seminars and doctor's visits so she can understand what's going on.

    Good day...

I went to a support group today, through my surgeons office. I found it, freeing a bit. I feel I need more of that to succeed. why do I push it away? This whole weight life journey of mine is all I know, and is definetly as much mental as it is physical! I know I can overcome this, I just dwell on when and what's next.
  8. Hi, having a great recovery. I had my procedure done at Kaiser. Gained about 8 lbs post op, a little head hunger and minimal pain. Wishing all my sleeved buddies a good journey too.????????????

    Banishing the Belly

I never have tried Pilates. For my exercise I alternate things but they include things like: crunches, leg lifts, walking, spinning, dance video and using weights to tone. My stomach has gone down as I lose, just not fast enough for me (never is, is it?!). I knew there had to be something to do to target a certain area but wasn't sure what to do besides crunches. I will have to try Pilates. I have been twisting! I am going to hold off on measuring for a while though.
  11. I definitely gain weight the week before the TOM...and it seems to be holding on to my body as long as it can! lol. I haven't lost any weight since about a week and a half out of surgery and even gained .4 last week...which I'm attributing to the Water weight. I'm hoping as soon as I start the weight will begin dropping again, but we'll see! I think the surgery definitely messed with my system too because I was supposed to start 4 days ago. I'd love to hear from people who are a bit further out than us to know what we should expect!

    I want to live

I am 25 and I weigh 308 lbs. today. I started my journey at 324 lbs. I want to know if any one else is on the same road as I am. I have been obese for my entire life. I can't walk a flight of stairs without getting out of breath. Yesterday was the first time in about five years that I got out of the house and walked around the neighborhood. I was always a couch potato. I would eat all day long. Any time my mood changed good or bad I would eat. Anytime I watched T.V. I would eat. I just ate a bunch of junk food like, nachos, bags of chips, candy bars, chocolate chip cookies, buttered popcorn, etc. Even after eating all day I would always take something sweet upstairs to bed. I have even let my daughter follow the same paths as I have. She is five years old and she wants McDonald's everyday after school because her granny always takes her. She is not too big now (51 lbs.) but her doctors always check her blood pressure because she is in the top 10% of her age on the weight chart. When I decided to get my life together and stop killing myself I decided to turn her around on the right track also. She cries out in the stores and throws temper tantrums because her granny won't take her to McDonald's anymore and I threw out all of the sweets and fattening foods out of our house. She is coping better now. I bought sugar free Popsicles, fat free pudding a jell-o, and different healthy snacks that she can have. I also don't let her have these things until she eats her meals including vegetables. I have forced myself to stay on my four week EAS AdvantEdge pre-op diet. I will be banded on June 13th. Every time I see a restaurant or a commercial about food and start craving unhealthy foods, I just imagine myself fitting into my size 12 nightie. I would like someone to give me encouraging words or tell me about your experiences with you weight issues.
  13. I went online to BCBS and registered. Then searched my plan for the IDT? or CDT? code for Lap Band surgery which is 43843. My plan came up with weight loss surgery and I was able to read about my coverage. Mine did not cover Lap Band. Yours might and it will give you the criteria. You just need that number. Good luck!

    Protein Shakes?

OK, here's what I know, for what it's worth. I'm learning as I go along, and just share what I know... I'm willing to read labels and bring in more info, because I just ASSUME (silly me) that everyone is kind of on the same page. I didn't research how Mexico works, because I didn't do that. So... My surgeon is part of a group that includes him, two dieticians (or, on here, NUTs), an exercise physiologist (trainer) with a gym we can use, an insurance coordinator (my hero), a nurse-case manager, and an office manager. The program involves seeing the NUT and the trainer every month to meet the insurance requirements that their coordinator knows by heart because it's all she does. She gets us approved! The nurse case-manager handles the medication change questions, and other individual things like CPAP and heart and diabetes... So we see her when we are having our freak outs. She's just left, and they are hiring a replacement (not that she can be replaced, but another one, anyway). And monthly support groups. So the program IS the dietician who knows bariatrics. The surgery happens, but it's the tool we use with the NUT program and the gym work we do. I'm shocked that you don't have a NUT. HOWEVER, don't freak out at weight loss numbers. I was sleeved May 13, BUT that was after I had lost almost 60 lbs already, through diet and exercise with the program. (shocked me, let me tell you). I'm thinking I'm losing slowly now, but when we're in a stall, here's what they ask us: Are you tracking your food (measuring and weighing and writing it all down)? are you hitting your Protein goals (they set them based on gender and height. I'm 5'10" and a girl and mine is 85g / day)? Are you getting your fluids (64 oz of non-calorie, but your Protein shake counts)? No caffeine, no carbonation. Low carb diet. No more than 5 eating points a day. A shake a day. (if pressed, they will give a calorie target, mine is like 1000/day). Eating your Vitamins? No more than 1 c of food at a time. Does that help? Feel free to ask me more questions. I have lots of paperwork that I refer to - I'm a scientist

    Ups and Downs

Love my band...and have had good success (started at 234 and got down to 167) HOWEVER...I have had some complications with a esophageal distention and needed to have all but 1cc of fluid left in. I've gained 25 lbs from my initial loss and am feeling very discouraged. Vicious cycle..loss=motivation...Complications=weight gain...Weight gain=depression and depression=eating....you get the picture. Anyone else had these sort of ups and downs?

    How often do you eat?

I try to eat only 3 times a day. Its what my doctor recommends, and its what works best for me. Its such a simple rule, so easy to stick to because there's no margin for error - you either eat or you dont. I find with the five small meals kind of eating that my meals are too big, I eat too many calories. If I eat 3 solid meals a day I lose weight, end of story. And I just say NO to in between meal eating. It certainly cuts out a lot of opportunity for eating the types of foods I shouldnt eat and have trouble with - Cookies, cakes, etc. Not that I always stick to it, lol.

    Eat To Live!

I am reading a book called Eat to Live to do a review on my blog. It is off to a rough start! lol come check it out http://kennethputnam.blogspot.com I am trying to get past my new plateu. I stopped losing when I hit my 200 pound weight loss. Any suggestions?
  20. Does anyone know of any clothing patterns designed for weight loss? I'm thinking, maybe pants with multiple buttons at the waist so you can adjust the waist size by which button you fasten, like how you can adjust a belt. With maybe a matching vest with some sort of button adjustment on the back too, so as you shrink the clothing shrinks. I would think someone could design a pattern like this that would take you through maybe 3 clothing sizes at a time before needing to purchase new clothing. Does anyone have any ideas of how to stretch your clothing budget?

    Always Hungry and PBing

Hi Dow, I dont mean to be offensive, but if you are really worried about your band health, then I would stop PBing so frequently. THat is a sure way to slippage and esophagus problems. IT sounds like you are too tight if you are not able to keep solid protein down. Grazing foods like popcorn and such go down for pretty much everyone. YOu are probably not gaining cause you are barfing up so much and at the same time you are still getting enough of the junk food down to keep you at the weight you are at. I hope you at least take vitamins. Have you ever considered getting a slight unfill and giving the ole throat and band a chance to rest??? I personally would be so unhappy if I could not eat my protein and keep it down. I like eggs, meat, poultry etc..and steak. I love steak but I wouldnt want to regurgitate it.... LOL Babs in TX 334/180 ish
  22. It can cause the issues. Something about losing weight quickly. I know someone on here can answer your question in more detail than that, but that's what I've heard.

    Surgeons and Prices

I was banded in Monterrey, Mexico by Dr. Rumbaut - he is fabulous, and it cost 10,600. But there are credit companies that they use so you can call and see if you can get approved, that way you will just have a monthly bill. I love it. I go to Dr. Brinkley in Frederick, MD for fills, and no, they are not painful. The numbing needle is a little stick, but it passes quickly, and then you can't feel anything. I don't know about the gastric bypass question, my dad had that but he's never regained any weight. I'll find the website for Dr. Rumbaut and post it, or you can google him and find out a lot of information there. Good luck with your information gathering!

    Tired....of EVERYTHING....

I'm so tired of all of this -- it's also irritating that no one understands what I am going through (in my immediate circle of family and friends). It's like I try to explain it but if you haven't been through it you don't understand. I guess that is why I am posting here. I joined a while back and posted a few times and then didn't come back to visit until recently. I need some advice, or a pep talk or something! Let me start by saying that this has been more aggravating recently because I am unemployed for the first time in my life, and I am having all these problems with my band and I have NO insurance! I have had my band for over 3 years. I started at 299 and got down to 213. I couldn't get any further. The band wasn't working for me. I started having all kinds of problems being able to eat -- ANYTHING -- sometimes couldn't even drink. I had this experience over and over and on several occasions I had scopes done, etc...they always said, "just go on liquids" or "your band doesn't look like it's slipped, we really don't know." It was awful, because I wasn't cheating....I wasn't eating the things I shouldn't be eating. Well, it got to the point where all I COULD successfully eat was the junk. I could eat sugary things and I started gaining weight back (duh!). I have had NO Fluid in my band for about 8 months now. My band would just get tighter and tighter -- to the point where when they had me drink the barium it wouldn't go down either! They took the fluid out and I haven't been back to the doctor since then. I'm tired of "just drink fluids." That isn't a long-term solution -- it isn't like I'm trying to eat STEAK! So anyway, my band is giving me problems again, DAILY -- and remember, I have NO fluid in it at all! I am really at my wits end. What do I do? I want it out of me! I want to act like it never happened. But I'm also scared because I'm gaining weight back (like half of what I lost). I feel so out of control with all of this and it isn't anything like what I thought it would be. I hate it! Sorry I know I'm just going on and on but I had to vent to someone who might understand because they've been through it (or something similar). AAARGH!:help:
  25. Banded Bandit

    Tired....of EVERYTHING....

Well the thing is that ever since I had all of the Fluid taken out, YES I could eat more (in quantity and in choice). By no means am I blaming ALL of my weight gain on not being able to eat the right things, because some of it is me eating the wrong things. However, lately, I will get "stuck" on the first bite of something. There is really no rhyme or reason to what I can and can't eat. I don't even TRY any type of plain meat (no sauces or anything to make it really slippery) or bread or anything like that. I was on vacation last week and we went to a mexican restaurant to Celebrate someone's birthday. I had one bite of my fiance's burrito -- which was smothered in cheese) and I was stuck the rest of the day, actually vomiting 8 times before it finally became "unstuck." It was miserable. I have never had that bad of a problem -- and I literally had one SMALL bite. I am now to the point where I have problems eating every day -- sometimes more than once a day. After getting back from vacation I was mostly eating Soups and "mushies" because I thought maybe my band had been irritated. I could feel it going down but it didn't get stuck -- it just felt like it was moving slowly. So I slowly worked my way into eating "normal" foods and NO....wasn't happening. The thing is that it's on and off. I can eat popcorn one day and the next, I can't even eat yogurt. I made some chicken salad with the canned chicken and some low fat mayo -- had problems. I tried to eat some fruit --had problems. But I could eat popcorn and of course any type of sweets. I could always eat salads and soups in restaurants but salads have been giving me problems....and any kind of Soup with anything in it besides liquid. Believe me, I have been through this long enough to know how to chew, know how to swallow even....I know what I should and shouldn't be able to eat. It doesn't make sense! And, I have no fill.....that is what makes it ridiculous to me! Thanks for your all's input....
