    Before and After Pics

I started getting my energy back when I got to soft foods. I've never felt fatigue before. 3 weeks post op. I almost.legt my grocery cart at checkout and go home as I could barely stand up any more. Decided then to shop for a few things and checkout. Putting them away takes even more energy. So going back another day. Even next, gave me steps and I didn't get so fatigued.

Everything improves & gets easier. Taste comes back. You continue to eat larger portions as you progress & a wider variety of foods. You get into better routines & your tummy is less sensitive. You also learn your body’s idiosyncrasies & needs. Check with your plan. I was able to eat vegetables from soft food (in stews, soups, omelettes at that stage & then as sides & fresh). Initially from the soIid food stage, I could only eat like a small cauliflower floret or two green beans or about a dessertspoon of steamed cabbage. I was also only eating 1/4 - 1/3 cup of food then too but by 6 months I was almost eating a cup (depending on the food). Now I eat about a regular portion size. Establish a routine with your drinking like how @catwoman7 does with what she drinks before breakfast. Many find success with setting a reminder on their phone to drink. I have routine of what I drink during specific times during the day & so by around 2ish I’ve had half my daily intake. I find it easier to drink as the day passes & I drink during the night too. (Get up to pee, drink. Pee & drink again.) If I’m driving, I drink when I get in & when I get out of the car & I’ll drink when I stop at traffic lights - it’s just become habit now. I don’t count any fluids in foods (except when I was on shakes) like not in soup - that’s just bonus fluid. Only exception is rolled oats. Don’t count the required 3/4 cup milk to make them but do count the additional 1/2 cup I add so it’s extra runny. I easily get in 1.75L a day but often get in 2L or more (2L = 67oz). I don’t think you experienced dumping either (usually caused by eating. high sugar foods or highly processed simple carbs). Sounds more like the foamies which can occur as a result of eating too quickly, over eating or eating food that is too dry or coarse. (You regurgitate the excess food or food your tummy can’t cope with, usually with foamy, almost sticky phlegm.)
  6. I recently had a hiatial hernia tear. I had GERD before and after VSG. I am 12 years out. ( I am 66 years old, and my mother and grandmother had this issue also...) I had no idea, but wasn't feeling well. I work full time, and and fairly active - I garden, have chickens for fresh eggs, used to haul around 40 pounds of grain.... but couldn't the past few months. Go into my doctor, they did blood labs and sent me to the hospital. I needed 2 blood transfusions, and 4 days in the hospital to locate the bleeding... had endoscope and colonoscopy .... NOTHING WRONG WITH MY VSG. But i had also been taking meds for arthritis. So I had some gastric bleeding and the tear in the hiatus. After that I had iron infusion in the hospital and one each week for the next 6 weeks. I have been told not to take my oral iron, and next week I will be 3 weeks without iron infusions, so I go and get labs then. Will see if I can go without it or not. Meanwhile, I eat a ton of cooked (fresh spinach ) a week; and try to eat beef 3 time a week, to help it out. Will see how it goes. I go to an outpatient infusion clinic. The nurses are incredible and never miss my vein. and I am not an easy "stick". I get the 20 minute infusion and wait a half hour afterwards with a slow flush drip. Then I can go about my day.
  7. Not sure if this is a stupid question, but do you guys usually wait to drink after eating cream soup or broth? I'm 11 days post op and like 2-3 days ago I ate/drank broth a bit too quickly and I felt nauseated. I've had a very good experience very little neausea and have been hitting my water and protein goals. TIA
  8. My sushi bill at restaurants. Major savings. Before I could (and did) easily spend over $100 buying sashimi and/or sushi at a restaurant. Now I get full on either 3 pcs of sashimi or 3 bites of sushi (not even $15 since I can't finish a roll).
  9. 3 mins for boneless thighs/legs (5 for breasts) on a trivet on high pressure in an instant pot followed by 12 mins natural release. perfect succulent chicken every single time. (lessen the release time if you want to cook further in a sauce or if u want to broil it for a crispier outside) outside of instant pot i rarely get the cook just right!
  10. I can't believe it. As of today, 7 months and 1 week since my surgery, I have officially lost 100 pounds!!!! I was 388 the day of my surgery. I cried this morning when I weighed myself. My next goal is to hit 270, which is what I weighed when I met my husband. After that, my last goal is to get to 200. Once I do that, I'll have to maintain it for a while and then SKIN SURGERY!!!!! There's no magic cure, no pill or food or drink that just magically makes the weight melt off. This is the result of the sleeve surgery, keto, working out 5-6 days per week (and alternating between cardio and weight training), and staying on track with what, and how much, I eat. No one thing works for me, it all has to be combined into a partnership for my mind and body. Surgery alone isn't enough. Keto alone won't work (at least it didn't for me). Working out by itself helps a little, but not enough. It ALL has to work together, and the key is to stay motivated and dedicated. Stalls suck, and they get frustrating. But as long as I keep my eyes on the prize, I'm actually gonna get there!!!! I never thought this was possible, but here I am

    Am I overreacting

Your mom sounds a lot like my mom. Mentally stuck in 90's/2000's diet culture that makes them think anything enjoyable is bad for you & you can only lose weight is your food is green & tasteless. I'm now close to 3 months post op & she has learned about food & macros during my journey. I've made it a point to educate, as annoying as it is sometimes. Ofc you don't have to do that bc I know how stubborn moms are but NO you did not over-react. Our journey is so specific to us & they're on the outside looking in. They won't understand unless they spend the same hours we spent reading about this. Good on you for sticking to ur plan!

    August surgery buddies!

That's just great! Every week I take some more clothes to the thrift shop, and that continues even during a stall (like the last two weeks). And you're in the 100 club, too. Congrats!

Thanks for your insight. I thought I dumped. Without getting too graphic, when I overeat or eat too quickly I get a strong feeling of nausea that is only relieved after a heave/ho. Once I’ve expelled even the smallest quantity, I’m good again. This has happened x 5 in 3 months.
  14. Lost 47lbs from 2022 mid summer high point and 30lbs since 9/12/22 sleeve surgery. Had doubts on doing the surgery given my age (69) and 36.7 bmi but received a lot of encouragement from fellow travelers. The most difficult part for me is recognizing that eating will never be the same. I can’t physically eat a lot and now get satiated with very little. This is very different from how I lived. I would always eat a lot. Some foods taste differently and since my eyes are still larger than my stomach I tend to leave food on my plate. If I eat too much or too quickly, dumping is a real threat. The other challenge is staying hydrated. I don’t get enough water from food (fruits and salads) and need to constantly have a water bottle nearby and remember to use it. This has been a struggle. After 3 months these are my key issues. Overall the weight loss and general good feeling compensate any challenges. Would love to hear from + 6 or 12 months fellow travelers. Does taste improve? Can quantity increase to allow for salad and veggies? Does hydration improve? Thanks.

    I cheated - now what?

I’m having bypass a week from Monday 19th am on LRD I have cheated a couple of times and feel awful about it. Hope it doesn’t jeopardize my surgery. Help
  16. i always seem to see both the bright AND dark side if things, so here goes. 1) at first i saved alot by not ordering full on meals at restaurants...just ordered an app or shared. then, i saved cuz when i did order a meal, it would last a couple days as leftovers. But now, i find i order a lot more dishes/plates when we go out cuz i wanna taste everything, and force my fam an friends to go to pricier restaurants. 2) also, saved by cooking more meals at home because of the birth of my love for cooking/baking after surgery. BUT the healthier, more interesting, and better quality ingredients are more expensive! 3) +1000 on not having to pay more for high quality larger size bras and underwear. BUT minus 2000 for me now buying sooo much more now that i can fit into regular size stuff. i mean i had like 3 or 4 good bras in rotation before. now i have like 20+...all of which i barely use cuz im braless most of the time. 4) not having to get a dress made for a special/formal occasion. i could never find a cute outfit in my size so often resorted to a dressmaker. now i have an abundance of choice off the rack....BUT now i would buy one off the rack even if i had nowhere to wear it to. Now for stuff i just spend more money on, period: a) regular clothes & shoes. i have probably spent 3x more on clothes since surgery (4 years and counting), than i did in the entire 15 years prior to it. b) vacations/entertainment/fun stuff to do: i go out and do way more now than i did...confidence does that to you , and is costs, man. c) PLASTIC. SURGERY. d) Beauty and medi-spa treatments. maybe age also has a contributing factor to this, but seriously my vanity is high maintenance. i didn't care as much when i was bigger, but now its like monthly appts. e) Reflux meds. Sorry, i am realizing my post is not in the spirit of this thread. i should probably start a sister thread to this one as this one is more uplifting while mine is more of a semi-downer. BUT: i do want to say that despite extra costs of whatever, i would do it all again a million times over. wls was def in the top 5 best decisions i ever made.
  17. Hi everyone, This is sort of déjà vu for me! In 2009 I was on these forums a lot as I prepared for my lap band surgery. I lost 100 pounds in 3 years with lap band. In 2017 I tried to have revision surgery to the sleeve but my BMI was 35 and I only had mild sleep apnea and my insurance would not approve it. Fast forward to almost 2023 and my BMI is now 40. I have a consultation on Wednesday as I now have new insurance (Anthem BCBS) and I'm hoping to have better luck with approval. I am leaning more toward gastric bypass this time. I know a few people who have had the sleeve and a few people who have had bypass and it seems like the people with bypass have had the results that I'm looking for. Also, I don't want another 10 plus years to pass and be back here again. I'm really hoping that all this can be accomplished sometime in the Spring as I have 2 young boys and we spend the majority of our summer camping and I would really like to have all this done before the camping season begins. I'm not sure how feasible that is but I guess I will find out on Wednesday at my appointment! Anyone else out there in a similar position or starting the journey just now? 5day Gastric Sleeve Post op

More than craving, it was habit of eating, but that was gone by week 1. I still have leg cramps and tingling, I used to get them occasionally before surgery and sciatica pain, but it got worse since I was sitting and sleeping in the same position for a week. I use the heat pad before bed and when I walk a little more I only get it once or twice in the night time. Sent from my SM-G960U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Am I overreacting

There were days when in the first month or so that I ate a dozen or more SF Popsicles. I did them because early on I could barely eat or drink and the little bit of fluid and big flavor helped tremendously in many ways. They were lights on dark days. As I was able to eat and drink better the SF Popsicles fell out of my diet on their own. For the record my medical team suggested SF Popsicles for early on for the very reasons I used them. There is no way I didn't and don't take my surgery and plan seriously even now. I was a plan Nazi the first 3 years and slightly more flexible since. I lost my excess weight and have maintained it. SF drinks are a frequent element of my diet. I think artificial sugars are the gods' gift and have no issue consuming them when I want a sweet flavor. Everyone, interestingly, is different. If consuming artificial sweeteners causes you issues, go with me here, don't consume them. If anything causes you issues avoid them. If you don't have a problem, don't let anyone make it a problem. Good luck, Tek

    October 2022 surgery support

My stall hit at around 2.5 weeks and lasted around 12 days. Then boom 10 pounds gone over a week. I've slowed again now and understand it's just going to be a process. I'm not getting frustrated since I know I'm losing lots of inches, my clothes are all baggy and people have started noticing in my face especially. It's just going to take time and sticking to the new way of eating. My doctor has me on about 600-700 calories for now. 80g protein, 50g carbs (usually don't come close on carbs), and 50g fat along with my 64 oz fluid each day. I'm still working on getting in everything I need to in a day.

    5day Gastric Sleeve Post op

I have leg cramps as well, been told it’s just my body readjusting. As for craving something I haven’t had any yet. Most of my craving were gone while on 3 week liquid diet. I still don’t feel hungry ever, and get full around 1/4-1/3 cup per meal. Surgery date December 5th.

    Gas problems and binder.

When is it a concern when I'm not really able to drink anything (even just water) without having so much gas coming up in my body/stomach? And not even burping it's like it's trapped or something 😕. I've been taking really small sips of every thing (cleat liquids right now) but it still happens anyway. I see my doctor next week Thursday but how this is feeling I don't know if I'll make it til then before going back to the hospital. Any suggestions? (I'm 😞 sorry for all the questions)
  23. Check with your surgeon as 1/2 cup may be a little too much. I was advised 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée. But all plans are different. Even though your tummy can hold 6ozs doesn’t mean you eat that much & yours may not hold that much. They’re only approximating based on how much of your tummy they removed. Plus your tummy is a muscle that stretches.

    Before and After Pics

Facebook memories showed me this Christmas picture from five years ago. While not my highest weight, there's definitely a difference to be seen. So here's the five years ago pic, one from April of this year (5 months PRE OP), and one from today (3 months POST OP). I don't smile with teeth often, so hopefully that awkwardness doesn't show lol.
  25. From the album: Alicia’s gastric sleeve journey

The pic on the left is the night before my gastric sleeve surgery and the pic on the right is 2 weeks post-op. I’m down 15lbs so far I know I have a long way to go, but I wanted to share my progress!
