    A minor set back

Well we'll its Me, lttler by the day ME. For those who have been following me it's 5 months 2 c weeks into this cheap poorly-written soup Opera of my post- surgery life. 2 and a half months since Catheterine Jo my PICC line catheter became steady company with each, other. Actual Surgery was September 5th 2018, PICC LINE insertion November 29 2018, started 24 hours a day because I had depleted my Protein stores, was accidently starving myself with malnourishment, and since I had gone to Surgery Date with a BMI in the mid/high 40s, outside world would not have noticed the state I was in. My body was at the point of stealing protein from other body portions to sustain itself. And where was its next potential target? Yep the Cardiac Muscle, already had a potential "time bomb" in my chest called a thoracic aorta aneurysm, if my poor poor beleagured ❤ started whimpering and flailing around, what could the Final Outcome? Do you all stock high heels, a black outfit and a hat with a veil? Went from from 24 hours, to 14 to 12 and this coming week,on February 19/ 20th I am to go to 2 ounces of mushy as possible, if not mooshy mushy I am to chomp it to a gray gelatinous mass before attempting,to ingest it. Now Titus was just a weanling pup when all this started, 7ncle Alfie has him out in the fields and woods, cause now That Dog Is big enough,to Hunt . Now I am a little excited, a little apprehensive, I have now been given Bariatric Permission to re Enter the the Land of the Chewing. And I get a picture of my 4 Bariatric Foremothers sitting and perhaps stifling a giggle behind their Weight reduced hands. Fluffy Chix, Green Tealael, Orchids and Dragons, Silly Kitty. You see folks , since 2 1/2- 3 weeks since my stomal structure and jejunal ulcers reared their ugly little heads I have been permanently, parked in Liquid-Land where all my Exs are not in Texas , they are with my currents in Liquid-Land where everything has the consistency of damaged Rainwater. So my little glass scale is waiting, my baby 2 oz cups, some wax paper to put under meats, my itty- bitty spoons which in the silverware drawer in a zip lock bag. And although the would prefer meats I can have 2 mini meals of smooshed up carrots or other soft veggies. No Virginia mashed potato is not a veggie, 9h I did ask. So at this point 2 oz every 3 hours during waking hours, they will mini- evaluate last of March, my TPN decreases in size of bag and calorie level and timing , I got to go 10 hours instead. See for over 2 months I have lived on TPN and Bariatric Vitamins. Wonder if there is a Saint dedicated to diatetics, Orchids and Dragons will know such things, if not it gives her an opportunity to go to Mid-week Mass to ask Father on my behalf. So everybody think positively for your Frustr8, I haven't had THIS CHANCE for months!😝🍮🍳🍏🍒🍍

How do I log weight & food?

Try Baritastic app. It can track your weight, macros, food, exercise. It has reminders and bariatric recipes.

    Am I eating too much?

FWIW - I have tried to eat 120 grams of protein from just food sources and I cannot do it. I cannot stomach that much food. Here's my average day: Shake with milk and fruit - 40g Skyr Icelandic Provisions yogurt 13g Chicken on greens for lunch 25g 2 ounces cheese 14g 5 ounces beef 37g So, that puts me over my 120, which if I subbed out 2 eggs for the shake in the morning, I'd be way short. If you look at what I'm eating, I am getting the majority of my protein from food sources - but I've been working with a sports RD who has experience with bariatrics to hone my macros because I train about 1.5 hours every day (hard -- 800 or more calories burned in a session) and I'm trying to add muscle but not cannibalize what I have. Trying to get my body fat down to about 25% - sitting around 30% now. Certainly, it is doable, but what I think your team is saying is don't replace two or more meals a day with shakes and bars.

The Truth about Weight Loss Agents...

I've seen so many episodes of BOTCHED & it still amazes me people will take dumb risks with their body or face or nose just to save money!! Bariatric surgery is intensive internal and a simple infection can KILL you. I've been researching multiple surgeries and surgeons for over 6 months. I've read 100s of Forum posts and numerous reviews before I decide the 2 Top surgeons and then I'll have a huge discussion with them to make sure they understand and treat me like a human before I commit So I say anybody who rushes into surgery without even thinking deserves what happens! Be smart. Common sense!

Has anyone tried Keto after VSG?

Hopefully a bump may prompt those who may be doing keto or close to it. I did a search on Facebook using - bariatric keto - there were a number of groups, you may find one of them useful if no response here.
  7. Hey all, I'm still in pre-op. Waiting to meet with the Bariatric Psychologist to final clearance. I believe I will meet with my surgeon for the consult after this. Everything else, is in order. As many of you, I'm so excited and nervous, all at the same time. Things couldn't possibly move along fast enough, I just want that surgery date already! (I've prepped all my liquids and pureed foods. I've also been practicing taking all my supplements for the last two and a half weeks.) I'm curious, is anyone else here short like me? (4' 11, to be exact.) If so, please share: How has your journey been? Did you notice the changes to your body early on or much later? How about other people? TFS, in advance!

    March Bypass Buddies

I've seen quite a few people in this forum who are having sleeve to bypass revision. I was sort of on the fence about which to get, and I went with bypass. It seems now that was probably the right decision. (My surgeon called it the "gold standard" of bariatric surgery.) Ellf, is there some reason to believe that they might not be able to do bypass safely?
  9. Just had GSV.second guessing my decision.wondering if Inshould have done lap band first as it is less invasive and restriction lasts longer .or if I should have done gastric bypass as it has long term documentation and greater long term success rate. My bmi is 37.i originally opted out of gastric bypass due to fear of malabsorption and thought it has more severe side effects.i have just read the description for gastric sleeve and bypass in this forum and not so confident that GSV has less side effects.please share your thoughts.

    WLS and wisdom teeth surgery

Sounds like a good plan, assuming you’re in relatively good health. If so, you should be able to tolerate oral surgery 2 weeks after VSG but check with your bariatric surgeon to be sure.

  12. Hello all, New member here! I decided I needed to make a lifestyle change and investigate all my options to improve my health/lose weight. As a Veteran I use the VA for my care (have BCBS insurance as well) and scheduled a PCP appointment before my initial consultation for surgery. While I got some really good advice and support in checking out my options for weight loss (including surgery), they were not too supportive of gastric surgery as an option although encouraged me to explore it. They also had focused on the negative and complications that could be associated with it and some general misinformation (i.e. have to lose 50 lbs before you are able to get the surgery and at that rate, you might as well keep going to lose more weight). The initial consultation with the surgeons office couldn't have been more polar opposite. Obviously supportive of surgery as an option, dismissed the prevalence of the complications that the PCP brought up (almost all the surgeries end up in perforations and leaks, a lot of people who get the surgery gain the weight back, etc). They answered every question I could think of and scheduled me for more appointments in the next month. I made sure to tell both the PCP and surgeon that i'm not rushing into something that is such a life changing decision. The surgeon mentioned with my age "low" BMI and metabolism it *should* be very effective. My body composition (for context): 33 years old, 260 lbs, 5'6, have sleep apnea and acid reflux that may be more related to weight and diet than GERD on its own. Other than sharing my experience, questions I have for everyone here is - If you have had a similar experience with your PCPs when discussing bariatric surgery? - Given my body composition, does bariatric surgery seem drastic? How many people between 35-40 BMI have had the surgery and do you think it was a good move? Thanks in advance for your input!

    ❤ FEBRUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

I noticed on the 💗You section there was Take a New Selfie, well on Valentine's I did its not a" facial selfie", instead it is of my upper tummy, I wanted to give it some b love and a shout-out here. You see I feel one of SELFIES beauty is noticing the beauty where maybe others couldn't see it. Well my belly went along with me on this Great Bariatric Exposition. It received its 7 obligatory slits, healed up without infection and has now teeny tiny silver scars, band although I was fearful with all the stretching, scarring already, and the stretch marks are a legacy since I was 11 years old, 110 pounds, turned out they came from a skin collagen defect, not frank obesity, a nasty heredity all 3 children received, sorry Babies! But back to me , I thought my skin would give up, did not,my skin still keeps the outsides out and my innards in, just having to stretch less daily as I lose weight. So although to many viewers it is NOT beautiful, to me it is a thing of joy and beauty, a vision of success, each skin Mar is a battle ribbon of success, I maybe be 73 but the woman within is strong, committed to success, best of all still living, starting to do it with a little more vibrance, Thank You God, Thank You Bradley J Needleman MD and Thanks Bariatric Pals for your emotional underpinings as I found my way there! So Blessings be upon you My Abdominal skin, you've never failed ME yet!💭💛💙💜💚❤💞

    I just wanna eat

It's so hard. I do think maybe you are doing activity too soon - mine says no sooner than 6 weeks. I know they are all different, but you are still on so little food. I think finding a therapist is really important and it's on my list of to-dos! I must do this next week because when I had my sleeve surgery, I could have done with it. I have just had a revision and I still need one. In the meantime, I just bought a book that looks good called Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life After Bariatric Surgery by Cynthia L Alexander. It has great reviews and I'm hopeful it'll help while I am looking for someone. I am actually kind of cross with the Bariatric Industry... I think that a therapist specialising in food addiction should come with the surgery. This isn't just about our bodies, it's more about our minds. We can feel so desperately alone after surgery and turn to all kinds of things to replace this addiction. We also go through loss and grief. Please, look in to finding a therapist. You can look online for one in your area that specialises in addiction. Don't let it slip away from you like I did where you have to end up having a revision surgery.

    Throwing up

My advice would be to find a bariatric doctor who has done removals and get it removed and discuss revision surgery if that is what you want. Vomiting is a bad sign. I had my band removed a couple of weeks ago after having it for 10 years. Hated it every day. Should have gotten it removed sooner. Even if you have to travel find an experienced bariatric doctor. Look online and Google reviews. Good luck.
  18. Hi ya'll! This is my very first post but I've been reading through the forums for a few weeks now. I am having trouble finding a provider to do my psych evaluation. I am having surgery with Dr. Alisa Coker at Johns Hopkins Bayview (and the experience has been wonderful thus far), but the psychologists they work with are scheduling into June or July of this year. I spoke with Dr. Coker's coordinator and she said that I am not limited to those providers specifically, I just needed to make sure it was a psychologist or psychiatrist who is able to perform bariatric surgery evaluations. All of my pre-reqs for insurance will be completed by the second week of March with the exception of the psych eval. I really don't want to have to wait 3 or 4 additional months, so I am trying to find somewhere else in MD or even southern PA who is able to provide these evaluations. Does anyone have recommendations for somewhere else I can go? I'm willing to take a long drive if I have to lol Any suggestions of providers/practices would be MUCH appreciated.

Wish I never let sweets back in

I am not a fan of shakes and bars. They never keep me full. I can consume healthy whole foods, keep within my calories and feel more satisfied. (make sure my suggestions fit your plan) Sweet: I eat my meal first and then I dip strawberries or apple in Sugar free Hershey’s cholate or Carmel syrup. Eating my meal first keeps my fruit in smaller portions. Dannon light N fit yogurt. Love the Carmel apple pie flavor. Great calories and protein count. Salad greens, shredded chicken, berries with skinny girl raspberry vinaigrette (Optional a bit of crumbled blue cheese and deiced pecans) Salty: Jerky, chicken fajitas or taco salad (no tortilla) Scrambled egg or egg whites. with jimmy dean turkey sausage, green peppers and onion. Tip egg whites are lower calorie and higher protein count. Fills more space in your sleeve and no guilt. lol This is my dietician’s recipe website for food ideas: https://insidekarenskitchen.com/recipes/bariatric-friendly-recipes/

    ❤ FEBRUARY 2019 CHALLENGE ❤

Feb.14th: I did walk quietly to my support group. Lol it was wonderful to listen to the know it all tell everyone what to do. NOT. There is no picture of my anguish. Bariatric prayer: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE never let me get too cocky, especially in the face of great successes and failures. Amen. I'm going to sleep early...
  21. Hi! I'm brand new too. I know your post is a little old, but I'm also having my surgery through Western Bariatrics! I went to the seminar last night! Could you tell me about your process? Any advice?
  22. My insurance changed! I started my journey November 2018, with a consult with my (then) surgeon at Riverside Medical Clinic. With my (then) insurance, Anthem Blue Cross ***, I only needed 3 month (12 continuous classes) supervised nutrition/weight classes. As of now, I finished 10 out of my 12 classes. Last week I found out my insurance changed to Anthem BC PPO and they now require me to go to a Dignity Health Facility to be covered 100%. Well okay... I call my nearest Dignity Health bariatric surgery center to find out more. I was told at Western Bariatric (St. Bernadine -- San Bernardino, CA) that I needed 6 months of classes and basically restart my journey. I started to bawl my eyes out! I'm 25 (November birthday) and I'm getting real close to end of my insurance coverage under my parents. When I had started my journey, I was hoping to have my surgery by March or April. So, I'm worried about having my surgery before my cut off. Anyway, I sucked it up and started making calls. I attended their Seminar, where we filled out new patient packets and made copies of our insurances. The next step is to wait for a call to schedule my consult with their surgeon. I was told that the consult would count as 1 of the 6 months of weight classes. Does anyone believe they will accept my 3 months of classes Ive already taken? (and maybe only need 3 more months to meet the 6mo requirement?) Will they consider the original surgeon consult from November 2018 too (as part of the 6 months wight management?) I'm honestly hoping that Western Bariatric will consider my start (Nov.) to my current (Feb.) for a total of 4 out of the 6 required months. I didnt want to be set further back, but ill take whatever they'll take and Im hoping for the best! Can anyone can give me some insight? Similar situations? Anyone go to Western Bariatric? I'm really anxious.

When did you stop using shakes?

I RARELY consume shakes or protein bars, or anything other than my daily food to get in my protein for the day. I focus on high quality meats and eggs, and have added in chickpeas and sunflower seeds. I also eat a lot of veggies every day... at work my lunches are always salads with nuts and seeds tossed in, and some form of protein like an egg or chicken. I wanted to be weaned off of the "fake" stuff as early as possible, so I haven't consumed a shake since I entered soft foods. I have some of the bariatric food I've purchased in my drawer at work as well as my car for a quick fix if needed, but absolutely don't rely on it. Sometimes I have to be creative to get it all in in a day, but I'm hitting my markers consistently.

    July Gastric Bypass?

T don’t be too hard on yourself, you’ve noted that your lost and looking for help. My suggestion would be speak to a therapist to find out why old negative behaviours are returning, I’ve had moments like this too. Also if your on Facebook there are lots of Bariatric support groups, also there is a reset diet which is basically resetting the pouch with two days of liquid like we did right at the beginning, look for this on Facebook for what to follow and as nutsesmiley80 said, speak to your nutritionist. You can get back on track! Exercise takes time as you need to work on building muscle, the scales don’t move but your body changes shape. More muscle mass burns fat more efficiently. It’s a journey not a quick fix. Stay strong and reach out to your team
