  1. It sounds like you are describing cystic acne. That can be a symptom of PCOS. You really should go see an ob/gyn or an endocrinologist and have your hormones checked. Even if it is not PCOS, getting a blood work up is a good thing to see if anything else may be awry. PCOS is an endocrine disorder that affects 5-10% of women in their reproductive years. PCOS stands for poly-cystic ovarian syndrome. It is a not a disease as there is no known cause, but a syndrome (list of symptoms). There is a correlation between insulin resistance and PCOS as well as obesity, however; PCOS can develop in women at any age and weight. PCOS symptoms include weight gain, mainly in the abdomen, cystic acne along the jaw line and chin, absent or irregular menstrual cycles, male pattern hair (chin, chest, back, etc), male pattern baldness, inability to loose weight or looses very slowly no matter what the amount of food or exercise, infertility and miscarriage due to hormonal imbalances usually involving insulin resistance and too many androgens (male hormones) in the body. Many women with PCOS also suffer from depression and skin issues, like eczema, have elevated cholesterol and triglycerides. PCOS cannot be cured, but it can be managed with medications and life style changes. I have PCOS. I developed symptoms at age 16 but was not properly diagnosed until 24. I have been struggling with it and my eating forever. I just got banded on 11/29. I hope with weight loss, some of the symptoms will decrease. Oh, don't try popping cystic acne. They are so deep seated that you will only get minimal release, and it will only inflame them worse; or they won't pop at all without a razor to open it. They can also leave nasty scars. You can try hot cloths on them to relieve the pain and try an over the counter hydrocortisone cream to relieve the inflammation. You may want to consider a dermatologist to see what cleansers and medications that may work for your acne. Good luck.
  2. I have no suggestion for the hair loss..I've been losing mine since 3 months out. But if you are stalling that long, I'd try shaking things up a bit. Change your caloric intake or Lilmissdiva's bootcamp might be a good place to start,,it's worth a try. Cutting carbs helped me shed 6 pounds in 1 week and I always felt full. Slowly adding back healthy carbs this week and the weightloss slowed down but I'm still losing. Logging what you eat in a journal or at myfitnesspal.com helps you see exactly what you are taking in. Increase exercise might be another avenue you can take. I'm so sorry things aren't working out for you this far out.

  4. how do i get on my answers the weight loss chart?
  5. Hi everyone, I need some suggestions/advice, etc. I am having a very early appointment with my surgeon tomorrow (not being banded until April 10th) and intend to use his time to ask questions about my upcoming surgery such as: Realize vs. Lap Band (APS, APL) Incisions (how many? where? where will they be after weight loss and TT?) Port Placement (higher? lower? I'm looking ahead to TT and waistband comfort) Fills (how soon?) If you had it to do over again, what would you ask? What would you want different? (or would you?) What did I leave out? Thank you! ~Carol

  7. This happened to me, don't worry! I didn't get my first fill for about 6 weeks post-op. I lost about 5lbs post surgery from the restricted diet but as soon as I got on solids I gained weight. When I went in for my first fill I was devastated to find I had gained weight. My nurse told me it was VERY typical and I shouldn't worry. Actually I had gained muscle from the working out and walks, and that added to the weight gain as well. As soon as I had my first fill it melted off. About 4-5 weeks later the weight loss tapered off. It was time for another fill, then it started melting off again. Just eat till you're full, but make smart choices. Of course with the holidays just passing it can be hard, but don't give up hope. I gained a few lbs from the holidays from eating junk, but as soon as I got back on track it came off. Are you exercising? Make sure you're at least walking.
  8. Hi all, I'm new to forums and chat rooms, but getting ready to have this procedure has prompted me to seek out others. I'm almost there, just need my EGD and set up surgery date, looks like it will be in early May 2007. I read several responses to Melissa Dangers posting and felt encouraged already. Glad to know I'm not alone in my struggles with this decision, it's like you guys/girls are in my head - it's comforting to know someone else has walked the walk and talked the talk. I feel pressured from my thin friend who wonders why I couldn't just keep working on the weight loss like I'm doing now (lost 17lbs since Christmas!!) and not go through with this. She really doesn't understand how that I cannot face another big weight loss failure from a "diet" to gain it all back, like I've done for the past 30 years. I'll be sure to share with her some of your sage words of wisdom to help her understand. I too am afraid of the pre-surgery diet and what it is going to take after surgery to succeed, but when you need to lose over 100lbs, I've decided this is the tool I need to have to be successful. Good luck to everyone out there.

    Libido?!

I have to agree with all these comments about loss of libido. I think it's a pretty stark sign that our bodies just aren't working the way they are meant to with the excess weight. I know that when I take off the weight, my hormones will eventually balance out and this time in my life will just be a faint memory. It's a big wake-up call not to want sex. Thanks for bringing up this important topic.
  10. Some people have had good weight loss, others not. In general the average weight loss with ESG is lower than the surgical options because the stomach reduction is not as great as the surgical options. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty/about/pac-20393958#:~:text=When combined with lifestyle modification,at 12 to 24 months.
  11. I'm losing slow too. My ticker is total weight loss, so I've lost....26 lbs in almost two months? I mean, thats awesome, I'll take it, but I was hoping for more. Oh well, I figure even if I just lose an average of a pound a week from here on out, by end of year I will be pretty close to goal! I was just hoping for more rapid loss.
  12. What were your surgeon/nutritionist instructions to you...and are you following them? Are you exercising on a regular basis? I was advised to never count calories, only make healthy food choices and measure my portions. Every meal consists of 3 oz of lean Protein and 2 oz of a Fiber carb, measured by weight after cooking. My philosophy is a bit different than many others who participate on this forum. I'm not trying to get my band overfilled to create restriction to curb my intake of food. I've been very conservative to have my band filled, and prefer to accept more of the responsibility for my weight loss by managing my hunger myself. So far, my approach has been working well for me, so I intend to stay with it... I've found that there are 3 situations which will stall my weight loss: not enough calories, not enough protein, and not enough exercise. That said, your number of calories a day seems a bit too high for weight loss. It does matter to make healthier food choices...avoid extra fats and anything "white". I shop only on the periphery of the grocery store; I avoid the bakery and focus on the produce, meat, and dairy sections. I hope that some of this information will help...
  13. The nutritionist I was dealing with was at a different practice then the doc who actually did my surgery. I saw that nutritionist for the 6 month supervised weight loss. At that time I was given a list of foods, and told "Keep carbs to 30 grams or less a day, and don't worry about calories". I did this for several months and lost maybe 1 or 2 pounds a month. The nutritionist said I should be dropping weight like crazy. I told her the only times in my life I actually lost weight was when I did EXTREME calorie counting, 600 calories or less a day. She told me to go with what works. So I did..and that when I started losing. Even after losing almost 30 pounds..the doctor at that practice still accused me of eating "cake and ice cream"....If I was I certainly wouldn't have lost almost 30 pounds. Due to one physician quitting the practice, another not being able to operate at any hospital in town, and a complete breakdown by there office staff...I went to another doctor and he was the one who did my surgery. I lost another 9 pounds on the Pre-Op diet, which brought my total Pre-Op loss to 39 pounds. I will find out if my newer doc has a nutritionist to work with.
  14. I am 1 month post op and taking the actigal for my gallblader per doctors instructions. Apparently rapid weight loss can trigger gallbladder problems. My question to those who have had WLS THEN had gallbladder problems.. did you take the actigall??? do you think taking the actigall did or did not help?? I am just wondering if I may have a gallbladder operation looming over me in a few months... At this point I have never had any gallbladder related health problems. Just wondering Rhonda

    Preparing for gastric bypass surgery

Hi Roni, First, congratulation on making the choice to improve your health! This is NOT an easy journey, but it is one that is SO worth taking. I had RNY on 6/25/2013. I was 48 years old, 5’2” tall and weighed 331 pounds when I first met with the doctors at my Bariatric Clinic. I am now 51 year old and this morning I weighed in at 127 pounds! Now I am working to maintain a loss of over 200 Pounds! This can be done! When I met with my Bariatric team back in January of 2013, I was told that I needed to weigh under 300 pounds in order for my surgeon to perform a laparoscopic procedure – and I REALLY didn’t want to have an open procedure. It was a MAJOR incentive for change. I mapped out changes that I knew I needed to make – and decided that I would make one change every week. This way I wouldn’t feel like I had to change EVERYTHING at once. I think my first change was replacing orange juice at Breakfast with a Protein shake. I am a member of the YMCA and I found a recumbent elliptical machine that I could use for exercise – for 20 minutes 3 times a week! I had SO MUCH knee pain that it was hard for me to walk. Eventually, I gave up my Diet Coke, began using MyFitnessPal.com to document what I eat and drink, stopped drinking with my meals, and increased my Water intake. All of these things (and more) were done slowly, over several months. Did it work? YOU BET!! By time I had surgery I was down 45 pounds. I had a VERY success laparoscopic procedure with no complications. Because I was exercising daily by the time I had surgery, my recovery was quicker and easier than many. I set myself up for success before I ever entered the operating room. YOU CAN TOO! Take it one small step at a time. Those steps really add up. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint! Remember that. As long as you keep moving forward, you are moving! That will get you to your goal. Feel free to write to me if you would like a friend/mentor. Best wishes! Carol

    Complex sleep apnea

Unfortunately central sleep apnea won't be corrected by weight loss surgery but as you said you may be able to lower the cm how as the obstruction goes away.
  18. Just because the surgeon is in network does not automatically imply that your new coverage will include bariatric surgery. I strongly suggest that you consult your HR/benefits team to ensure that bariatric surgery and weight loss services are not excluded in the new policy. On the right side, there are times when one company will continue to cover you for a procedure like this that is already underway so that you do not experience an interruption in treatment. This may not qualify because those arrangements are usually reserved for treatment of severe injuries or pregnancy, but it never hurts to ask.
  19. I'm so damn frustrated today. I've been doing my pre-op diet since Wednesday. I have been following it to a tee. I'm only down 3 friggin pounds. (Down 5 gained 2) I'm looking at my kids food and asking myself "why am I starving myself if the outcome isn't going to be great" I know that the liquid diet is suppose to shrink the liver and aide in weight loss but I'm not seeing much of it. I'm soo upset and I've been busting my butt. This may be the wrong place to post this, if so I'm sorry.
  20. Do exactly what your dr and NUT tell you to do. Be patient with yourself--it's a big change and takes a while to figure it all out. Best of luck to you! I wish you great success, no pain, and lots of weight loss!!
  21. The same thing happened to me. I was banded in February and did so well until about july and then it all went down hill. Well, kind of, I gained about 5lbs back but it was like I was STUCK majorly and didnt know how to get back in the grove. So I tried the 5 day pouch test (google it) and it really helped me to get that pouch feeling back and kickstart my weight loss again! best of luck to you!

    Men - don't read, it's about my period :)

Treat this like you would if you did not have the band. We just talked about this on another thread. Your peroids should have nothing to do with your band. We were wondering if every time something goes wrong now or hurts if we will blame the band. My advice is to call your genocologist. Wishing you great health and steady weight loss.

    Adjusting calories for work outs?

Everyone is different, I shoot for 1300 calories a day and I have a BMR of 2600, which according to what B-52 said (and I generally agree) gives me a 2.6 pound loss (I am actually experiencing almost 4 pounds a week). I also exercise, some days I eat the calories, some days I don't, I don't have a rule, I just try and listen to my body hunger and give it what it needs.
  24. 3500 calories = 1 lb of fat 3500 / 7 = 500 calories per day That's 500 calories per day MORE than you consume, to loose one lb per week. So, if you consume 1000 calories, you must burn 1500 calories....OR consume less calories per day. Ideally consume less, and burn more...increasing the gap between the two.... And that is for real fat burning weight loss, not the quick early stages of weight loss which everybody experiences If you want to loose more than one pound per week, you have to up the above numbers.... Also, in my case, I have always found Protein to give me more energy than calories.... Also, since I am no llonger concerned about loosing weight, I find that exercising everyday covers a multitude of sins....with no weight gain...
  25. I had to go to my obgyn today & weighed while there. I was expecting a gain due to anesthesia etc, but I'm down 14 lbs since starting my liquid diet 8/21!!! I started at 213, at hospital I was just over 208, now 199!!! happy dance!!! Robyn
