    Me and water. Why?

Tn1031, Thin covered why you shouldn't drink with meals. I'll cover why the quantity of Water is important, ok? Water flushes the toxins out of your body, specifically out of your brain cells as well as your internal organs. It hydrates your skin which promotes elasticity (ie, so the skin will not sag quite as much as you lose the weight) and often if you drink water when you think you're hungry you'll realize that you were thirsty, and not truly hungry. So, it's important. Having said all that, I count all water that goes in my mouth whether it be Crystal Light, tea, Protein drink made with water...whatever. Maybe that's not right..but it's how I do it.

    Which To Have

I researched the band in 2006, but never followed through with it after my first consult, which I'm glad. I then wanted the sleeve. My younger sister was in the process of doing pre-op testing for the sleeve, so we researched it together. I wanted the sleeve because It seemed less serious than the bypass and I liked the fact that there was less malabsorption issues. My friend in college also got the sleeve and lost over 100 and told me it was the greatest thing she ever did. My sister is two weeks post-op from the sleeve and loves it BUT.... 1) Found out my insurance won't cover any weight loss procedure except gastric bypass 2) Found out most people who get the sleeve end up NOT losing as much weight as they hoped for 3) I figured if I'm going to have a weight loss surgery, I want the BEST one out there with the best long term results, etc. Now After much research, I wouldn't have any other procedure done besides bypass

Well although there are a lot of articles and things out there that talk about average weight loss. Well what is average weight loss considering we are all different and unique people. I my self started out at 402 lbs on 8/28/03, that was 3 and a half months ago. I have been eating solid food for about 2of those months. I now weigh 340 lbs, that is 62 lbs in 3 months with noooooooooooo fill. My friend has lost 100 lbs in 3 months with no fill although she has had some complications, a different friend has only lost 35 lbs in 5 months with 2 fills and that is ok. Everyone is different, even if we all ate the same food, exercised the same it doesn't mean we will al loose the same. You may loose 36 lbs but you could also loose all of the weight you need to to get to your goal weight. SO GOOD LUCK!! Don't let anyone bring you down. I haven't even scheduled a fill yet because I don't need one yet. you will do great.

    6 weeks out

I think about 95% of people some sort of stall. I never had a true stall (14 days without an ounce lost), but the closer I got to goal, my loss slowed down. I didn't experience a stall for the first 6 months, and then I was a few pounds from goal and hit a 10 day stall, then BAM dropped those pounds plus 2 to drop me below goal. If you follow your post-op dietary guidelines, push Protein and fluids, the weight loss will continue, plus working out, building muscle mass can slow down your loss, but you'll be losing inches. A pound is a pound be it a pound of fat or muscle. Fat is lumpy and takes up space, muscle mass is lean, and takes up less space in our bodies so when we build muscle, it burns the fat, and we trim down even though the scale may not be moving. I recommend taking your measurements at your neck, breasts/chest, upper arms, upper thighs, waist, hips and calves. Your clothes might fit differently even if the scale isn't moving much because you're muscles are growing, and the lumpy, bumpy fat is melting away. Mentally prepare for a stall by realizing that your body can not continue to lose a pound a day for a year. Take your measurements, and document your progress in pictures so you can physically see the changes. If you hit a stall, analyze your intake and make sure you're staying on course food wise. Stalls happen, the rapid weight loss can't last forever, but you can continue to lose at a good rate by sticking to the rules. I dropped 115lbs in 6.5 months so it's possible to lose all your weight, and keep a steady loss going.
  5. I had a tummy tuck in 2008 and had lots of problems with adhesions and nerves trapped in them causing lots of nerve pain. For years I couldn't move around very much without severe pain. Gradually I tried various therapies and drugs and found one that masks the pain and I function reasonably normally now as long as I don't try to do too much. I cannot exercise, mainly because my abdominal problems have caused other problems and weakness - I have chronic lumbar back pain (caused by weak core muscles, caused by poor mobility). I am 54, 2 years into menopause and have steadily put on weight - firstly after my tummy tuck and even worse since starting my menopause. I think I want a gastric sleeve - a band seems to end up with complications too often. But no-one on any of these forums ever mentions adhesions. Some questions - I hope you all can help Don't they (adhesions) happen with VSG surgery? Will the adhesions I already have mean that I am not a candidate for surgery anyway? Will regret my surgery again? Any advice welcome. I am worried that I will just continue to get bigger and bigger, will get diabetes, have a heart attack and always be miserable and in pain. Will a VSG solve my problems - make me thinner, happier, healthier, fitter? (I had a breast lift a year before the tummy tuck and that was fine so surgery doesn't always go wrong for me)
  6. 15 years ago I was 135/140 pounds. I wasn't fat looking. Everything but my butt & boobs were small. 3 kids later hit 211 highest weight. Now I'm 139 I don't feel or look skinny & people are actually saying I'm skinny. I need 14 more pounds to lose to be at goal weight for my height 5foot & 125 is the weight for me. I do feel sexy. Clothes fit better. I'm a size 12. I was a size 13 (15 years ago.) I feel big in the mirror not with clothes on. I feel good over all but I just don't see my self skinny. Slimmer yes.

How Much Did You Lose In First Weeks?

I have a over 150 lbs to lose, and I have read that with Lap Band you dont lose as high of a percentage of your excess weight as you would with bypass, but I am dead set against something so evasive...so I have chosen lap-band. My doc wants the weight off quick because its causing lots of probs with my back and knees..but I am confident that once i get the first 40-50 lbs off, I can keep myself working out and eating the right portions and food choices to get the rest off. Maybe not as quickly but still quicker than If i didnt get the kickstart with the surgery. Reading what most ppl have lost in the first month or two, is very exciting and makes me that much more certain that the LB will work for me! Thanks Becky

    Telling A Loved One

I've had my band since 24 May 2010; lost 71 lbs. in 10 mos. It was the easiest weight loss I've done (& I've done them all) and KEEPING IT OFF IS THE EASIEST THING EVER!!! My lapband is the ABSOLUTE BEST thing ever ~ I swear by it!!! It is "an insurance policy" to be able to take/keep the weight off, but you still have to do your part. The first few months after you start ARE weird but, that's because you're learning a whole new way to eat and think about food. If your friends will support what you are doing, it will be MUCH easier. If you can find a weight loss surgery (esp. lapband) support group (yes, there are some ~ ask your lapband clinic), that might help, too. If you make sure the way you think/act about your band stays positive, there shouldn't be anything to worry about. It's a good thing that you want to lose your weight by the time your brother moves back from Japan. That will help you with what you're doing (yes, you should be able to lose at least quite a bit, if not all, of it). Once your brother sees you, you won't have to say anything! But, when you tell him about it, he should feel good that you're doing something so positive for yourself (seeing the results should convince him). By the time he does get back, the "lapband life" will be totally normal for you! The most important thing for you to remember is that if you have a question about anything concerning your band, ask the clinic that's doing it for you!!! That's their purpose in life! I haven't had any problems with my band that couldn't be "fixed" (remember to talk to your clinic and do what they tell you). Just BE READY FOR YOUR LIFE TO CHANGE (not in a bad way, just change) with your band. If the clinic you go to offers counseling to help you know what's going on and how to handle it (maybe how to tell others, too), USE IT!!!! If other people have trouble understanding/dealing with your lapband, that's their problem. Do not allow anyone (even your brother) to affect what is right FOR YOU!!! (may take some time/work to adopt that attitude but, it will help you succeed with this ~ I promise). GOOD LUCK!!!!!
  9. Saw my Dr. yesterday and got the results from a blood draw last week. My A-1C(blood sugar average for 3 months) was down to 6.9. It had been 7.7 last year, 7.2 early this year, and 7.1, 4 months ago. That doesn't sound remarkable, except all of the 7 numbers was when I was taking 120 units of insulin and 2000 mg. of Metformin a day. The 6.9 has been since I have been taking 10 units or less a day and no Metformin at all....1/12 the dose. My good cholesterol was up (40) and my bad cholesterol was down (62) and my dosage of the statin drug has dropped to 1/2 the regular dose every other day (so 1/4th of what I was taking). I didn't have any idea what my results would be........but I am sure one happy camper. The VSG did what I wanted it to. I also had been plateauing between 190-192 and yesterday that was broken as well as I hit 189. Which makes my weight loss at 47 pounds on the sleeve and 98 total. I am re-enthused!!!:P:P:P:P:P:P:P
  10. I am so ready to be in Onederland! I've been waiting to be under 200 pounds for a lifetime it seems. Actually, I haven't been under 200 for 17 years and that was when I was going to Weight Watchers and had lost 50 pounds which took me a full year to do so and I made it to 194 then had some things in my life happen and gained it all back plus 20 pounds. Then I did this a few more times. I lost 70 only to gain back 90! I pray this is my last attempt to do this and I really believe it is. So far I've lost 88 pounds in 6 1/2 months but my weight loss has slowed down so much. I guess I really expected this to happen. I mean really?? How else could I lose this amount of weight in this amount of time?? NO way except by this wonderful tool I've been given by the grace of God. I mean that! He has blessed me with this gift and I never want to go back. I've come too far and been through to much. I'm 6 pounds away from ONEDERLAND! I will be so happy and feel so blessed when the scale reads 199!!! I know it is going to take awhile for the 6 pounds to come off but I've been doing everything I should except exercising like I should. I started a new job full-time and I'm not use to that. I've been laid off since February and there again God blessed me with this job. I started last week. The only thing is I sit at a desk all day and my upper back is in excruciating pain. I don't have a clue what is causing this!! I'm thinking I've lost muscle mass?? Does anyone know anything about this?

    SO close yet SO far....

Actually I've noticed more back/shoulder pain since surgery and the only thing I'm thinking is that it's chest related. I've lost weight everywhere else, but not there so there's less fat to hold them in a comfortable position and maybe they're stressing out my back

Help Putting My Mind At Ease

You will be successful! You will lose the weight! You are losing weight. The amount of exercise you are doing is great. You are probably gaining muscle. This is good and I think you know this. Muscle weighs more than fat, so you may not be seeing a huge drop in the scale, but you will. All that new muscle will also increase your metabolism. It's all good! Also, at week four, as you have read on the forum, things slow WAY down for a while and may even stop. I experienced this. Your body is readjusting to the initial weight loss. You are probably losing inches. It will pick back up again. My doctor was really happy with an average weight loss of 2-3 lbs a week. Prior to surgery, we would have been thrilled with this rate also! Try to look at your average over a month rather than looking at each week. I will see a sudden drop in the scale, then it's back up the next day, then it is down one more, then same....But when I look back over time, I am losing an average of 3 lbs a week. You are not the first one to think this will not work for them and you will not be the last. I have had the same thoughts. Just keep up the fantastic work you are doing. It is obvious you are sticking with the plan! You will do great. My prediction is you will have some rockin' 6 month post op photos posted five months from now!!
  15. Do not fear, you are doing fine. My weight loss fluctuated month to month even though I ate the same 600-800 calories each day. Mostly I lost about 2 lbs a week, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, and one month I only lost 4 lbs. Keep to your plan and keep active and the weight will come off. Every little bit helps and it all adds up to a big number in the end if you persevere.

Coutney you look amazing! In just 7 months!! Wow!!! I bet you can't wait to go to the beach this summer all skinny and all that!  What is your goal weight and height? Or do you have a size as a goal? I kind of like that idea - some people have posted being a single didget size as goal. I don't know if I'll get that little-I'ld be happy size 10! (from 22-24!) Keep up the great work!

    Band to Sleeve; Weight Gain?

I had my band removed and waited a year to get the sleeve. In that year I gained 50 of the 80 pounds I had lost with the sleeve.

    Sleep Study In Progress

Just an update!! I just got back from my follow up and I do not have sleep apnea!!!!! I am so thankful for that!! And shocked that I actually slept a little over 6 hours I did not think I even got close to that! I do have periodic leg movements that wake me up quite a bit but she said that is common for someone who has had knee surgery as I have. She said once I reach my goal weight if it is still happening they ban give me meds to help! I also am not spending much time in REM sleep so that us why I am so tired, but I am just do happy that I don't have apnea! I think I did a little happy dance!!

    Denied!

The only problem is that my last appointment where i weighed in at 248 was 6 weeks ago. In order to become a BMI of 41 I have to weight 270. It would be hard for even me, to gain 22 pounds in 6 weeks... I dont want them to get suspicious...lol

    Weight gain while in process

I must have the most lax insurance ever. I was able to schedule my surgery within 8 weeks of my consultation. I didn't have to lose any weight first, or provide a whole lot of history.

    Mixed Bag, But Mostly Good!

It sounds like you are doing great! Be sure and post tomorrow after your doctor's appointment, so we know how that goes. And remember, it is a journey that we all take one step at a time. I can remember when I was just a couple of weeks post op, and in a hurry to get all my weight off and "be done with all this". It finally dawned on me that it will never "be over". That I will always be a post op VSG. That although the day will come when I will eat more normally, I will always be limited in how much I can eat. I will always (hopefully) eat less than I used to, but the other side of the coin is that I will weigh less than I used to also. In short, it is a new life style, one that will help me be healthier, happier and hopefully live longer. Best of luck tomorrow at your doctor's appointment and congratulations!

    First fill is soon!!

I JUST recived a call that my first fill had to be rescheduled.:phanvan I am disappointed because I am ready to get going on the weight loss, but a little relieved because I was nervous. In response to your earlier question about feeling your port...I can still feel mine. You can actually see where it is; there is a lump right at the base of my ribs. When I bend at the waist or sit along time it can be uncomfortable. At my last doctor visit though, he felt it and said everything looked fine. I didn't mention that it could be uncomfortable. I just assumed it would heal or something. I will tell him though when I get my fill, now scheduled for the 13th. Isn't yours on the 12th?? Well, now you have to let me know how it goes... Good luck to you on your first fill and as you get going seriously in the process. Your kids are going to be so proud of you, and that is a wonderful example you are setting for them...to take care of yourself. Cindi:ranger:

    June Surgeries Updates!

My body is holding on to the weight in my stomach, so my thighs and face etc look thinner and fit into smaller clothing but my stomach makes it so I am stuck wearing a bigger size. I just hope the belly fat starts to go away more in proportion with the rest of my body soon! I am having the same problem too, I Surgery was on 6/12 and I have now lost 61.5 pounds. Now I wear makeup before I go out and make sure I look the best in what I have available in my closet. I think all the compliments at work etc help in making me what to care about what I look like, whereas before even when I tried to look good, no one would notice or say anything. I NEVER wore make-up before, now I also put it on even just to run out to the store where no one knows me. I keep getting compliments everyday and I guess that is motivating me! It sounds like we were twins! I know that the weight didn't go on overnight and that it will not come off overnight. I am off all my meds and I am not sleeping with my CPAP, although I am looking into getting an Auto PAP, starting to feel tired in the mornings again.
  24. I had my procedure on Dec. 30th, I am still healing and had a hernia removed while I was getting the band. I have had no weight loss since surgery, but kept the 12 lbs off from the 2 week diet before surgery. I can pretty much eat whatever I want, but too scared to try breads. I try to make reasonable choices, two hours after I eat, I am hungry again. I am always hungry. I was under the impression I would not eat as much. My contact at the Dr. office said I may not have an adjustment until my first apt. in a couple of weeks since I had the hernia repair. Is this common? Could my band be open, therefore not giving me a full feeling? I am super nervous about getting my first fill in a couple of weeks, hope my sutures are all healed before then.
