    Surgery seems like a long way away!

    I just received my surgery date of October 5, 2022… Seems like such a long way away! Using this time to mentally prepare. I am 60 years old. At times it seems that I have waited too long. Then again I enjoy playing with my grandchildren and finding the energy to do so with this weight is extremely hard. Counting down… 75 more days!

    Telling others

    So this is something I have been struggling lately with tremendously. I talked to my parents when I decided that surgery is what I wanted to do (after 2 years of contemplating it). I just spoke with my 12-year-old daughter over the weekend since my surgery is getting close and there will be some drastic changes in the home for a while. I haven't really thought much of telling anyone until a few weeks ago when I bumped into a close mutual friend in one of my classes that I had no idea was going through the program as well. Immediately my heart kinda sunk because I knew if some of my close inner circle found out without it coming from me they would probably feel a little hurt I didn't feel like I could talk to them. I'm not embarrassed or trying to hide it. My dad's reaction was about what I expect most will respond with, not too much understanding since I have lost the weight before and was able to maintain it for a few years. I don't want to not tell people and feel like a fraud or try to dupe anyone that it was all on my own. I agree that I don't owe anyone an explanation... I just feel a little defeated the more I think about it.

    Who says you have to tell anyone? Its really up to you and your comfort level. I told 5 people: Mr., the Kid, BFF, mom and sister. All of whom I know wouldn’t say anything to anyone else if i asked them not to. That was almost 4 years ago. During weight loss phase, everyone and their mothers would ask or comment about my changing appearance. i simply said i was on a diet and changed the subject to be about them. That pretty much did the trick. No one asks/says anything to me anymore. My size just old news now. Tell who you want to tell, it’s not anyone else’s business but yours. Good luck! ❤️

    Trying to get out of my head....

    I'm on Omeprazole daily. And as of today I actually gained 4 pounds!!! Like, how?? Why??? It's so demoralizing because I didn't have these issues when I did keto. I steadily lost, I didn't have a fear of eating, I only had 1 short stall. My issue was that I couldn't keep it off once I lost 100 pounds (in 9 months). I'm finding it's 10x harder to lose weight after this surgery than it was with just doing keto. Only now I can't do keto again because I had the surgery and I have to have low fat instead of high fat (both require low carbs, low sugar, and high protein). I thought maybe if I did keto again, then it would be easier to lose and the surgery would help me keep it off. But then I read that you can't do keto once you have the surgery. So I ended up afraid to eat because it seems like everything causes weight gain....and now here we are. *sigh*

    Hmmmm

    I doubt anyone has gone from bypass to sleeve since bypass is the more powerful surgery of the two. there are people who go from bypass to duodenal switch (which has a sleeved stomach and a bypassed small intestine), but to standalone sleeve, no. statistically, bypass has slightly better results, but statistics are statistics. It depends much more on your level of commitment than it does on which surgery you have. We have several people on here who've lost 100% of their excess weight - or close to it - with sleeve. revisions typically have slower weight loss than virgin surgeries.

    Stall out and depressed

    Definitely! I've been really good about keeping on track with my meds lately. Taking it day by day. Really just making sure I cross off my protein and water for the day and workout. I broke my stall as of the last time I checked. I've actually dropped about 8 more lbs since moving.   7. so I’m about 5 weeks post opp and I have lost about 35lbs and I have stalled for the last week and a half. I just feel like I’m failing :( I feel like what if I don’t lose anymore? Was it all worth nothing? I’m wondering if anyone else ever felt these emotions I am a super emotional person but losing weight has been so amazing and it would make me so sad if you know this is it… I’m not sure how to totally explain it I just don’t feel so hot. I know stalls are normal but what If I’m doing something wrong? You know? I’m just scared.

    Backstory- I had a sleeve surgery about seven years ago. I misused my tool with self sabotage. At the time, I didn't have the appreciation nor respect of myself. I wasn't mentally prepared for the physical changes. It's kinda like one of those things... that you don't know till you've been there and done that...sort of situation. You don't know what you don't know! I never hit Onederland...boo!! And as I shrunk in size, I was not taken seriously...that was the first for me and very mind boggling at the time. Those are the two things I remember most and with all that conveyed, the questions.. Those that had the sleeve and went to bypass, how do they compare with the level of success- A.as in the rapidness of weight loss? And B.the areas of the body that the weight loss was mostly noticeable? C.just out of curiosity has anyone had a bypass and went to sleeve?     4 MONTH UPDATE

    Hello everyone, it has been awhile since my last update so I guess it is about time. So, really no complaints. Life if good, everything is going well and I am chugging along at a very satisfying pace. I have lost 113 lbs total and 76 lbs since surgery! I measured myself for the first time since surgery the other day, really most of my body measurements are the same which I find a little weird after loosing 113lbs. I do carry most of my weight in my belly, and have small arms and small legs so I guess it makes sense. I lost a total of 4 inches all over my body PLUS 14 inches in my waist alone. No bad I suppose. I can eat anything except COLD chicken (I guess it is too dry cold) but it makes me sick every time I tried so I stopped. I also struggle a bit with actual soft bread, it doesn't make me sick but it hits me like a brick. Toast, crackers, wraps are all fine though. I eat a very balanced diet of everything as my dietician recommends while making sure I hit my protein and fluid goals. I usually don't have room for carbs once I eat the protein but every once in a while I get some in and I don't mind it. I have splurged a few times with treats, very minimal a few bites 2 or 3 times. Haven't had any issues with that and I have never dumped. The list of NSV's could go on for days. I played tennis the other day for the first time since loosing weight and the difference was unbelievable. I didn't even get out of breath while running back and forth across the court, because really we suck at tennis so there is a lot of running but it is fun. My knees don't grind, my feet and ankles no longer swell even after walking all day, I don't walk up the stairs all on one leg anymore, I FIT ON ROLLER COASTERS!, I walk around the water park in my bathing suit now. I bought a new bathing suit and feel good in it. I don't find excuses to drive place even when it is less than a mile away, I just naturally walk. (I live in the city) I went from a size 26 jeans to a size 18/20 depending on the cut. From a 4x tshirt to a 2x tshirt. My shoes are loose, probably don't need "wide width" anymore. Still working through my skinny days clothes so I have only bought 1 new outfit for a nice dinner because I don't have anything other than jeans, and mostly tshirts that fit now. By the end of the year I will need an entirely new wardrobe! I am looking forward to the shopping. (For once in my life!) I could go on and on but you get the hint! I hope everyone is well! ❤️

    June 2022 surgery buddies

    I’m interested to see who is eating salad. I really want to eat salad. I miss it! I’m thinking of chopped steamed spinach in the meantime. My stall was at 4 weeks and lasted 3 days. I immediately went back on liquids with 1 tablespoon of puréed food/once a day, and the numbers are going down again. My water is always first and always at least 64 ounces. No artificial sweeteners or flavors in it. Crystal lite, etc make me stall. It’s not my imagination. As a former runner, I am very aware of what I should and should not consume. I don’t eat cheese…I do eat cottage cheese. No more potatoes since I’m off purée basically. I think I’ve had total 4 tablespoons of mashed potatoes during purée stage. I love chocolate hummus, bone broth, smoked salmon, a one-egg white omelette… and food was not important to me for most of my life so I’m thrilled to be back ‘there’ again. I am so happy and relieved to finally after 10 years of trying to lose weight that there is not anything I feel the need to eat. I’m 100% committed to maintaining at least my mind set that social encounters and occasions do not have to include food. And, if they do, I can be present with a glass of ice water. I’m so thankful that I’ve had this procedure (RNY), I no longer have acid reflux (typically 10-12 Pepcid a day if not more), I am not short of breath (type IV hiatal hernia)…I am incredibly blessed. This is the best thing I have ever done for me!

    Congratulations 🎈 on your progress! My surgeon told me at 3 weeks post op, that weight loss would slow when solid food was introduced which I did expect. The body metabolizes solids differently. It’s part of the process. Choose nutrient dense, healthy foods, and start building lean muscle. Muscle burns fat. Good luck and keep up the good work!

    I want to add that food and eating ruled my life before surgery. I would wake thinking about what I would eat, and food was constantly on my mind--when I would eat next, what I was craving, where I needed to go to buy the things I craved, etc. I definitely still think a lot about food now as well, which is of course necessary to maintain weight loss. However, I don't feel like my life revolves around food the way it did when I was fat. Quite the opposite: I now view food as fuel, not as reward, comfort or a treat.

    I had my sleeve on the 22nd June and now I can eat anything I want apart from tough meats. My dr told me to eat between 900- 1,200 cals a day. I usually have around 900. I’ve lost 20lb so far but this week my weight loss has really slowed down.

    I think everyone adjusts differently. I’m now off the puree diet and onto the sort diet and feel like I’m eating lots of potato and cheese. It’s weird because usually this would be foods I would avoid on diets. I get between 600-800 calories a day with the help of baby Bells (high in protein), a protein shake and a protein yoghurt. I’m meant to be working to 50gs of protein for dinner but am finding a meal difficult because it’s always protein first and that means I don’t get to the greens and veg. I’ve been quite active, swimming 3 times a week, 40-60 lengths a time so my nutritionist said I can eat more to ensure I have energy. I’ve just come out of the slump 5th week slump, and am loosing again which means it’s gone from water weight to burning actual fat which is great. I was a bit worried about the pause in weight loss. is anyone else struggling to get to eating lots of greens and salads? So over eating yoghurts, smoothies and high protein cheese with potato. I want to feel like it’s a healthier plate. Can anyone eat a salad yet? My op was on the 9th of June

    I've been using My Fitness Pal (free version) for many years and it works great. I track everything I eat, and also my weight every morning so I get a nice chart showing my progress. I also use it to take a picture of myself in the mirror once a week and you can do comparisons of how you look now compared to the past side-by-side.

    Mini-cheat 5 days post op

    It's not the end of the world but take it seriously - if you couldn't follow the rules by day 5, what's going to happen by day 50? Or 500? After I was sleeved in 2016 I did extremely well at first, I followed the plan to a T, I never cheated, and I dropped 120 lbs in about 6 months or so. Then I figured I could splurge a little here and there, have a few bites of a snack, because what's the big deal, right? It ended up turning into a vicious cycle where I ate more and more crap and eventually I regained almost all of the weight I had lost and was absolutely miserable and depressed and feeling like a complete and utter failure. I got the revision to bypass in Nov 2021 and am down nearly 100 pounds, following the rules and doing everything I'm supposed to, and always keeping in mind what happened last time. Don't beat yourself up too bad but if you feel guilty - GOOD! Use that and remember it when you have cravings in the future. Remember this isn't a magic bullet, it's a tool, and it's up to you how you use it. You haven't failed because of one mistake, but you might fail if you let it become two mistakes, then three, and so on.

    I realised spoke a lot about eating in my second & into my third year & wonder if it was just me coming to terms with everything & wanting to talk it out. I do like to verbalise my thinking 😁. I notice my friend who had surgery a year after me is now talking about her food choices a lot more too. I wonder if it’s just something some of us go through. Could some of you thinking you’re focussed on eating be for the same reason: learning & coming to terms with what works for you? Discovering what you need & can eat to maintain your weight & health. I focus a bit on my protein simply because of my absorption issue & I am always conscious of portion size. And I freaked out a bit when I gained a couple of kg earlier this year. It took me a little while to come to terms with why (increased protein intake & a higher dose of HRT) & accept & manage it. But you know if it’s just learning & understanding or if it’s you being obsessive in your thinking. All the best Sue.

    Yeah, I have regained 10-15 pounds from my lowest, and it scares the crap out of me. But I have to admit my face looks a little less ghoulish. I am probably pretty lucky in that I don't have a wattle from losing my double chin (I'm also pleasantly surprised by how decent my arms look; I'm not wearing tank tops in public or anything, but I'm also not needing an arm lift). We've all seen people who have gone through this surgery and gained back most or all of the weight, and I'm terrified that if I take my eye off the prize, that will be me. I don't know if my rebound is from the malabsorption wearing off or because I've relaxed too much about food, but I don't like where I'm headed and I feel like I need to be more vigilant than ever. I've tried two therapists and they were no help at all... Unfortunately, it is really hard to find therapists who understand the struggles of bariatric patients.

    I know lots of people who manage to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight without making it the only thing in their lives, and I envy them deeply! I am afraid that if I take my eye off the prize, it is a terrifyingly fast road back to 300+ pounds. We've all seen people who have gone through this surgery only to gain back all the weight they lost, and I can't even handle the thought of that. There actually are things that I would like to do if I could find the time to do them, but by the time I subtract my job and exercise and meal prep and sleep and the bare minimum housework I need to do out of the number of hours in a week, I never seem to have any time left.

    I've relaxed a lot on measuring my food because I've gotten pretty good at guesstimating certain things that I eat all the time, and also recognizing things that aren't worth measuring (for example, salad greens -- even if I ate double the serving size, it's a difference of 15 calories; or entering half a peach in MFP instead of weighing it to get the exact number of grams). But my weight has started to creep up, despite the fact that I'm working out like a maniac, and it scares the crap out of me, so I feel like I need to pay even closer attention.

    Thanks for the reply... It's nice to hear from someone who understands. My blood pressure never got as low as yours (at its lowest, a few months after my surgery, it was about 80/50; now it's more like 110/70), but my resting heart rate was in the high 30s. Any time I went to a doctor, the nurses taking my vitals thought there was something wrong with the machine and had to check my pulse manually. Now I have a pacemaker that kicks in if my heart rate goes below 60 bpm. I wonder if this is a common thing with fat people. I always felt like I had to work twice as hard as anyone else just to prove I wasn't stupid and lazy as people would assume because I was fat. When I got serious about my health and stopped working 20ish extra hours per week, I felt like a failure because I couldn't keep up with what people had come to expect from me. I felt like I was slacking because I was only working 40-50 hours/week. Ironically, when I was doing badly at my job for the first time in my life, I finally got a promotion at another branch of my company, and they had to hire two people to replace me at my old job. I, too, feel a bit angry when I realize how much they took advantage of me, expecting me to do two jobs for the salary of one. I just wish I didn't have to choose between my weight and the rest of my life. I envy people who have never had to struggle with their weight and don't have to devote their lives to it. I want to have my cake and eat it too!

  25. I had RNY in 1990 and regained all I lost. I always blamed myself but now know that the surgery failed due to a fistula between pouch and stomach. I didn't know that revision was even possible until 2020, just before the pandemic struck. I started the bariatric program in early 2021. I discovered that I am a food addict with trigger foods: sugar, wheat flour, rice, white potatoes, and processed food. I cut out those foods and the result was fantastic! I lost 70 lbs prior to surgery. Despite this success, I went ahead with laparoscopic revision surgery on 12/21/21 at age 73. I weighed 247 at the time of surgery, down from 317. Unfortunately, I fell in that very tiny group of bariatric surgical patients that develop serious complications. Ten days after my revision surgery, I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis, caused by a rupture of the jejunum below the anastomosis. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks and underwent three endoscopic procedures and two open surgeries before they finally found and corrected a residual abscess. I left the hospital with a 15-cm long open surgical wound, which took 8 more weeks to fully close. I am now fully recovered and am back to exercising daily. The endoscopic procedures stretched the new anastomosis so I have no more restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I still have to be very careful about what I consume. I typically go through month-long stalls and then drop a few pounds. I do lose inches during the stalls. I've dropped from size 32/4X to size 20/XL and now weigh 214 lbs., just past the 100 lb loss mark. After being on a restricted diet for over 16 months I struggle with near-irresistible cravings in the afternoon and evenings. The clinic wants me to limit intake to 800 calories. 😱 It is daunting because I know I will never be able to go on a "maintenance" diet and must continue to avoid my trigger foods forever. Even when I choose protein snacks in response to cravings, each snack adds 100 or more calories to the daily total so my daily calorie count is between 900-1200 calories. (I will gain weight at 1500 calories.) I've done a trial of weight loss drug CONTRAVE but had to discontinue due to side effects. This is a horror story, but don't let it dissuade you from your revision. Complications are extremely rare.
