  1. Join us in the veterans forum. There are a lot of us who are fighting weight gain after being sleeved awhile. You can do it. You need motivation from the rest of us. There is also a maintenance thread in there. It helps to be accountable. I am working on 10 right now.

Victorious Valentines - Feb. 08 - MASTER THREAD!

(((((((((HUGS)))))))) I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Ezma. I know your husband had been very ill; I am sure the last few months have been very stressful. Any weight gain is understandable and no one is going to comment negatively about it. The VVs are here to help, motivate, support each other. One day, one meal, one walk at a time. Keep checking in with us and we will all help each other. I missed your inspiring posts. I am glad you are back with us. Take care, my friend.
  3. I was sleeved Feb 25 (1 wk, 1 day ago) and now that I made it through "hell week" feel like I might survive lol. In the hospital I was nauseous and wobbly and once home I was in pain, my legs swelling and tingling and couldn't get more then a couple tblspns in a day of water or nourishment. Definitely couldn't stomach the shakes and had trouble finding anything that tasted right. I think my taste buds are finally headed back towards normal now- whew! Hubby was sleeved Dec 17 and sailed through everything with no problem, followed the diet with no problem, very little pain, was riding an exercise bike within a few days- basically the best possible outcome. I on the other hand was the complete opposite. I finally just decided I was going to have to eat a bit outside the norm or I was not going to make it and for me that made me start healing. So for example last night I had 1 oz of salmon mixed with a teeny amount of healthy mayo and this morn i am working my way through a scrambled egg and then will have a couple oz of OJ. Including my 2 wk pre-op diet I've now lost 22 lbs including all that fluid weight gain from the IV and surgery. Hubby and I both use myfitness pal- easy to use and nice to see the protein and calorie numbers. TMI: My 3rd day I pooped (hey, we all do it, lol) normally but then for the next few days I had diarrhea everytime I managed to eat something. Thankfully that seems to have passed. Maybe it was the Lobster Bisque, lol. I did have trouble bending over to wipe from the belly pain and hubby bought me this stick thing you attach the TP to but it really didn't work. Not worth the $15. Actually he had bought me a bidet attachment thing for the toilet but our toilet wasn't compatible- darn. Twice I wasn't sure I'd wiped well so I made those "shower now" days, lol. I'm a great tooter and happily no sharts Last night was my 1st night that I was able to sleep in my bed all night without having to move to the recliner. Yes I had a ton of pillows but I made it happen! Still looking forward to being able to curling up on my side for sleep but for now this is good My first week I had a tummy that would just spam and jump on it's own and an awful pain left of my belly button. That pain I was convinced was from splitting something inside because my 2nd trip to potty in the hospital I bet over a little and coughed and felt something there go POP all the way over to my bellybutton! I told the nurse and I told the surgeon but they didn't seem concerned. That was the pain I thought was going to do me in once I was home because I couldn't stomach the liquid pain med they gave and they told me to take tylenol and couldn't handle more then 1 pill a day at that point. That pain, just today is finally easing up- yay! My other big pain was my left shoulder. I had a (surprise) hiatal hernia repair done also and they said that shoulder pain was from the repair. Today I can breathe and not wince as that pain also is fading away finally. One thing I wished I had known sooner was it's really ok to take Aleve and gosh those pills are TINY and last longer! I am finally starting to get my meds and vitamins in but it's slow going. Still haven't had a day where I got them all in. For me besides Tylenol or Aleve, it's - Losartan pill for hypertension, Prilosec capsule to protect the tummy, Ursodial capsule to control the gallbladder (I do have a tiny gallstone), Multivitamin with iron (2 jumbo chewables daily), Calcium Citrade softchews with D3 (4/day), and Sublingual B12 once a week because I don't want the dreaded intramuscular B12 shots. I haven't started exercising yet other then a bit of walking but once I do I will use the exercise bike we have here at home and then move on from there. Hubby goes to Planet Fitness which he says is nice because it's not the kind of place where already fit people go, lol. They do have people there to show you the ropes too and it's only $10 a month and no contract (or $20 and you can use more then 1 location and bring a guest). Unfortunately it's not that close to home. He uses one at lunch near work and on weekends uses one in the next town over. So I was considering Curves for women which is 5 minutes away from home and do their 30 min circuit. My exercise specialist at the weight loss clinic said I could but that he didn't recommend it as a first choice. So I'm not sure.
  4. It's day 4 for me now and I've realized that the discomfort I've been having is definitely gas. I wake up in the morning and feel fine, then as soon as I have something to sip, the pain starts and lasts for a couple of hours. The pain is to the left of the port site and radiates to my left shoulder. So trying to sip less and sip slower.. As for the weight gain, I too have put on 3 pounds since the surgery. But have been told to expect that because of all the fluids that have been pumped into me. So I'm trying to be strong and not look at the scales for a week or so!

    What Made You Smile Today?

Music makes me smile...going to concerts makes me even happier. This modern day Led Zeppelin was amazing to see live. Since my weight gain, I quit going to shows because it was too hard to get from the car to my seat. But someone bought me a ticket so I went. 7/22 No regrets. I plan to attend many more in the near future as I become more mobile "We need some healing...♫"

    Bitch and moan.

My story is up there with yours or maybe worse. Check this out... I had my surgery on April 27, 2007, a day before my B-day, Whoo Hoo, right. You know when they tell you to do the liquid diet before surgery. Well I just couldn't make myself follow any diet and I don't know why. Anyway, I didn't lose anything before my surgery. My doctor checked my BMI and said he could go on with the surgery, Yippeee!. Well, anyway, all went well and I tried my best to follow the food instructions. Guess what? For a whole year I LOST NOTHING! NOT ONE POUND! I was eating less, so why hadn't I lost anything. Who knows. Anyway, even though I didn't lose a pound, I didn't gain anything, Whoopee, right? Wrong! About two months shy of a year. I started gaining weight. Of course, by this time, I thought I was invinsible. I ate whatever I wanted and thought I wouldn't gain anything. Boy was I wrong. I gained about 20 pounds which put me at a higher weight than when I first had my surgery, eeeekkk! I couldn't be more disgusted and depressed. I too, didn't want to go back to my doctor with this weight gain. My co-worker finally convinced me to just go back and get a fill, which I should have gotten when I first saw the signs of eating more than I should. Anyway, I went to get another fill and that did the trick. I started losing weight immediately. I've lost about 41 pounds so far (10 months). I can tell you that I am still losing weight, but slowly. I guess I can get my lazy behind into a gym or start walking again because it did help. Anyway, we are both struggling, so you're not by yourself. It will take some time and I know and you know we can work this band, girl. Get back on track. It's the only way to go. Good luck and Happy New Year. - Beverly Los Angeles, CA

    Bandsters Nov 17-21

some people have called this band hell the time before your 1st fill. i go on monday and i'm goin to ask how long before the first fill:scared2: my doc is a stickler on weight gain from now and what could be 4 weeks. I keep the grumbles to a lul with sugar free jello or a tsp. of peanut butter since it's high in protein. i'm so scared for anything else.
  8. @chubrub Congrats! I'm glad your feeling better and doing better with the N/V. Did you have weight gain at first? I'm po day 3 and I'm 6#s up! RN stated it was normal since they pump you full of IV fluid to prevent dehydration once your home. But it was a bit disappointing to see the scale go up not down.
  9. I had the sleeve in 2013 at 274 and my lowest was 170. I regained to 260 in 2017. I mainly wanted a revision for the weight gain but I too have Gerd and I didn’t know at the time it was caused by the sleeve. I thought it was normal to have heart burn. I’ve gotten back down to 233 in the summer last year 2020. I am currently I’m at 255. I’m having my revision to the RNY in about 5 hours but I’ll let you know how it goes with the weight loss.
  10. So for over a month I've been in this stall. 1lb up, 1lb down, 1lb up, and 1lb down. Then, I had a 3lb weight gain over 2 days! [emoji33] I called my NUT and we went over what was going on. I've been trying to deal with a torn knee, being on cortisteriods for that which make you insanely hungry, not being able to do any lower body exercise because of that and lupus flaring up which we have found out is liquefying my knee joint, so we've had to up and change meds to try to get it under some sort of control. But all that doesn't excuse the weight gain. It's merely running tandrum to my weight gain. The weight gain, is coming from the fact that little carbs are sneaking in. 1/4 of a tortilla here, starchy veggies like peas here, maybe some corn in my tortilla soup there, etc. a half a slice of bread for a sandwich. Apparently some of us are really highly sensitive to carbohydrates so my NUT wants me to cut out all carbs and fruit and go strictly with plain protein and leafy greens. No fillers and see if that will help. What I wanted to share is that if your stall is going on this long, you might just need help sorting out your diet or something and while a week or two is normal, over a month is NOT normal especially when you are only 4 months out and have an obese person yet to lose. So, if you find yourself where I am, please follow up with your NUT.. It could save you from never reaching your goal.

For the ladies (sorry guys, close your eyes). Does anyone else have problems with monthly water weight gain? 5 - 8 pounds is common for me. What works? -K
  12. I was banded March 2007. I have not only not lost any weight, I've gained 3lbs over the past 10 months. I have been filled to the max. I don't eat much, let's be honest, I can't. I can't even eat the 4 oz portions suggested. Yes, I'm eating the right foods. I work out 3 to 5 days a week at least 1 hour to 2 hours each time. I was considered a low BMI on the lapband scale but still enough of a BMI to get the surgery covered by insurance. I'm frustrated and disappointed. Isn't there anyone out there that has had this happen? What's wrong with me?
  13. I just dont get it, ever since August 26, 2005 (my band date) I have been doing great, my knees havent hurt, and my wrists and shoulders and TMJ havent been bothering me as much. During Christmas I had gotten down to 209, my knees and wrists starting hurting again yesterday....now I have missed 2 days of school since last Tuesday! I just dont get it, AND!!! Ive gained like 4 or 5 lbs without any changes to my eating (Im not eating any more than I was, in fact Im eating less). Im soooooo discouraged right now, I thought I was fixed (well kinda) I knew that a fall or extreme activity could push me over the edge, but I havent done anything but start school after 2 weeks (and I worked the entire 2 weeks at Factory Connection!) When I started school I have to take this class called Foundations of Personal Fitness, it's upstairs and it requires hand-writing assignments....Ive only done a partial assignment and have been sitting out from the gym because of my knees and my surgery was less than 6 months ago.......I dont get it.......the class isnt even upstairs anymore..............Im confused.............I dunno, been crying all day from the pain, I cant take anything because its all in pill form..............SO CONFUSED...............I think the weight gain may be from the swelling in my joints.

OH my God! SaraMoss, That Pre-operative list is frightenning. Seriously bandster, YOU DO NOT NEED them at all. At the end of the day, it really is down to common sense and it really is NOT that difficult to follow. Just like anyohe going for any operations, you just have to take it easy for a couple of days. After the op, there WOULD NOT BE a great deal of restriction as yr doc wud hv just insert the ring band around yr stomach. U will need a few FILLS before you will feel any restriction, and that would be in the duration of a least 6months before you will feel your weight seriously going down. The doc did say it will be a duration of 1-2yrs before we will lose 80% of our overweight weights. Just be careful because you just had an operation. Stay off solid food as instructed, stock up on liquid low calory drinks, non-fat yogurts, light clear soup for the 1st couple of weeks. Stay off cabonated drinks. By week 2, I was already on pureed food and creamy soup. The hosp you going to should be giving you some chewable pain killers when you check out of the hosp anyway. Yr wound should heal in a week's time. It's more scarry than it is painful, truthfully. Good luck to those going for the op. And to answer yr question Sara Moss, I have lose 24pounds since Sept. I suffer from my underactive thyroid which means I should celebrate even if I lose 1 pound cos I have a non existence metabolism and weight gain are usually associated with this disfuntional thyroid problem. I went underactive 3yrs ago and put on 3stones, which wont buldge despite all my exercise & diets. Thats why I finally seek the banding option.

When I started the mushies/soft foods, I actually started gaining back the weight I had lost. At my 2 wk appt, I told the Dr about this weight gain and he gave me a fill then. Just keep at what you are doing!

    Salsa's Summer Surgery!

Sorry things have been hectic. We went out of town so that I could get a fill. I have been starving and not staying full for very long at all so I decided after three months of being unfilled that perhaps I should go in. I had gained some weight but I am not sure what is swelling and what is actually weight gain. But I wanted to nip it in the bud quickly. Healing is going alright. I am really REALLY swollen right now. I am also still leaking at the incision site. I have an appt with my PS tomorrow and will report back in then.

I've got to ask this ...

I ask myself that sometimes. I think there's something to be said for making a commitment like this. Now that I've spent the money, went through a surgery, had to recover from it... how am I not going to follow through. It's easier to make some sort of tangible commitment - like paying for something - than it is for me to make a promise to myself. Also, I felt this was kind of a last resort. Not to be too dramatic. Same as you, other stuff didn't work, didn't make me exercise, didn't make me do anything else I didn't want to do. However... My biggest problem with weight gain was portion control. That's why I opted for a band instead of a bypass even. In this case, the band is helping me. I know that I can't take that last bite when I'm full, because I could get sick. I hate hate hate feeling that sick, so I know I won't push it. Again, the rest of the stuff falls into place because you're doing this for you - no one's going to lose weight for you, make you exercise, make you eat right. If you're committed to getting the band, then you have to commit to all the "rules" it comes with. It's not always easy, but neither were any of the other diets I tried!

    Fobi ring

Hi, my surgeon has recommended that I have the Fobi ring fitted when I have the sleeve operation, to help prevent future weight gain. Has anyone had experience with this???

Yeah, I suspect I will be gaining back a few for sure. I also think much of what I've lost thus far is just water weight. But I won't let any weight gain discourage me - keeping my chin up

    Hungry and not losing

Hi, Thanks to those who replied. I spoke to the nurse yesterday - it is her who takes care of the dietary side of things. She has ok-ed me to have soft foods with plenty of chewing, as the swelling around my stomach has obviously gone right down if I am hungry and able to tolerate soft solids. She has also said that she will do a fill on my next appointment (in 3 wks - 5 wks post op) so the future is looking brighter. RE: the weight gain. We have come to the conclusion that it may have been caused by the fact that the Optifast diet is designed to put your body into ketosis, and now that I am on mushies a lot of the easy mushies are quite high carbs. Hopefully my body should sort itself out soon and continue to lose. Thanks for your replies.

    The Maintenance Thread

I gained about 6 lbs over about 2 months...but is started just before quarantine, so I can't really blame it solely on that. It was basically due to eating more & being less active (which I suppose is the same reason for quarantine-gains). The gain took me over my "upper limit" so I stated to eat less and went back to running (which I haven't done regularly since plastics back in December due to recovery and all that). It took 2-3 weeks, but I lost those 6lbs as of last week and am back down to my "lower limit" (which btw, was a wake up call because historically I would have been able to lose those 6 lbs in a week with a real effort!). I haven't tried Noom*, but do what you can to address those 12 lbs if that is important to you! Addressing 12 lbs now is much more manageable than 50 or 60 later. It's a good that you recognize the contributing factors to your weight gain, because at least YOU KNOW what you need to address. Get up from the desk every hour or so and move around; try to stick in maybe 30 mins of dedicated exercise every day (maybe start at 15 mins if it helps to kick start yourself); figure out something else to do when you are bored other than eating, or keep off-plan foods out of the house & replace with better choices. I admit, I indulge with not-the-best choices every once in while...this is what I do when I recognize I am getting out of hand: If I want something that isn't the best choice, I'll get something to drink, and/or wait out 30 mins or an hour to reconsider. If after those 30-60 mins I still really want it, then fine, I'll have it. But more often than not, I won't want it anymore. This works for me, buy your mileage may vary. *Noom, from what I read is a food tracker + food idea provider + "personalized coach", which encourages healthy food and lifestyle habits with words of encouragement & a points "reward system", as well as an online community for further support. At $50 a month, the convenience of getting all this in one place *may* be worth it. BUT you could also get all the above for free from different sources if you are willing to make the effort (I use MyFitnessPal for food tracking...I signed up for the premium version for $50 a YEAR, because I wanted access to the macros, food analysis and export features, but you could probably get away with just the free version if you aren't anal like me, LOL.) Good Luck!

    The Maintenance Thread

Sorry if this is TMI but did anyone else have diarrhea trying to increase calories? I am not sure if it's the general increase in fat or carbs. I thought I had a handle in trying to stay at this weight or maybe lose 5 pounds over a few months. It was working but now I am back to losing 2 pounds in 5 days. I am 5' 2.5 and now 129. I know I can still lose more and be ok however I have a lot of muscle and excess skin from prior weight gains and loses. I feel like I am getting too skinny. My face looks tired and gaunt, my wrists are so bony. Here's what I eat and I am trying to increase calories but heavy meats fill me up for hours. I have to graze all day to get this in: meals: premier shake and 5 oz of milk (1-2%) 1 egg with 1c sauté spinach using olive oil, 1-2T cheese 4oz. premade chicken salad (130 cal with 3.5f, 13g protein) 1.5 oz ground beef with 1/4 c veggies (green beans or broccoli) 1-2T cheese snacks: 1T peanut butter 1 cup of milk 1/2 c berries (divided up all day long) 1-2 servings (5 oz cups) of low sugar yogurt sometimes the one with nut butter mixed in 1/4 c pumpkin seeds or walnuts lentil crackers, nut thins crackers, or 1 sheet of graham cracker harvest snaps green pea crisps --- it all averages to 25% carbs (80g), 33% protein (97g), 40% fat (44g) for an avg. of 1100 calories I know some of the processed snacks are not the best but I am trying to increase calories and carbs without the volume. I have a hard time getting in water since I always feel like I am eating but I figure the milk and yogurt as snacks helps somewhat with fluids. Any suggestions?

It's a date! I'm making a sweeping declaration (a la HIMYM) and promising this: Even if I am no longer an active member on BP at that time, I WILL log on here on (or around) Oct 24th, 2021 and report on my status (fatter or not) ❤️ P.S. To clarify, I'm not denying that there can be bounceback weight, only that there is bounceback weight because of a change in eating habits. If I continue with eating the way I did yesterday (2000+ cals with minimal exercise), I fully expect to report a significant weight gain on Oct 24th 2021. And I would have no excuses for the gain other than the choices I made. P.P.S. I hope you have not been offended with my personal views, and that all is cool. I'm Canadian: We hate confrontation and apologize for everything. Sorry!

    Soda soda soda

I think carbonation is only one part of the equation... The fake sugars in diet soda are a whole other animal that contribute to weight gain and slow weight loss... Those fake chemicals are just bad news... and I am not sold on that 'Truvia' crap either...

Yea Shawna!!! Can't wait for that day myself! Ballparks can wreck your eating habits can't it? My kids played ball and I think that's what contributed to my weight gain. Cheesy fries were my downfall. That and a lot of other things. Deb
