Hello Forum! I'm so glad I've found this site. We have a support group here, but they meet once a month. I was recently banded on 9/19...so I'm through my first week and starting the second. I had no complications and was back to work on Monday. Since I started the process with a liquid diet 2 weeks before, I've lost 21lbs...only 4 last week, but I'm hoping to get a fill on Thursday for more weight loss. I slowly started adding soft foods this week...an egg, thin slices of ham, and tuna. Lots of soups mixed in along the way. Since I've started soft foods, I feel like I'm still eating too much even though it's literally just ounces that I'm having. We'll see what my Dr suggests at my visit. I look forward to chatting with everyone and reading about your weight loss journey. Tammy

futuremoments, I'm not banded yet but I can assure you that what you are feeling is normal. I hang around this list a bit and I can tell you that most of the bandits on here have felt the same way you do right now. If you weren't scared there would be something wrong. Just think though, in a few days you will be starting on one of the most exciting journeys of your life. A healthier and perhaps happier you. I won't say a new and improved you because you don't need to be new or improved - bandits just need to be a little less than they were :rose: wheresmyknight, What a terrific loss!!!!:clap2: You must have had a very good recovery to be back at work in a week. Here in Australia they recommend 2 weeks off work - some go back earlier some don't. It probably seems like you are eating a lot because of your time on liquids and because you are getting full faster. 4 pounds in one week is really good - would you have lost that much on a diet if you hadn't been banded? Well as you can see I get a bit long winded. lol Good luck in your journeys and keep in touch.

I went to my last appt with the surgeon today...I have lost enough weight to do the one week of pre op dieting. But I am going to start a couple of days early just to be sure my liver is good. After talking to the surgeon, everything became real...I am getting sooo excited now!!!

I am almost 3 weeks out from surgery. This morning I started developing a rash. It started on my arms, by this afternoon my legs and back are covered too. Then I started getting a headache, and I'm feeling very nauseous. I took my temperature and I have a low grade fever (99.9) I don't know if this is even anything tied to the surgery or if I just have some sort of bug. I don't want to take benedryl because I don't think I would be able to keep it down. Should I call my doc, or wait a day or two?

I was fortunate to have a great team at the Kaiser Options program beginning last September 2011 - classes once a week with a group, 6 sessions with the nutritionist and 6 with a behavioral therapist to help us uncover the emotional components of our eating habits and getting us ready to deal with many life situations and life after surgery. The nutritionist guided each of us in our pre-op weight loss (10% loss expected prior to surgical approval) I was started on 1400-1600 calories for 4 weeks, 1200-1400 for the next 4 weeks, and then 1200 from that point forward. It helped alot to do the tracking and at that time keeping a manual log, eventually I moved over to myfitnesspal.com, it's easy and the database has tons of values already there for you to just click the button. Today I'm six weeks out from surgery and from last Fall, I am down 60 pounds. The weight has come off slow but steady, even after surgery, but I am making subtle changes that I hope will increase the rate of my loss, mainly cutting carbs and increasing physical activity. Mostly I was doing daily walks on my breaks, and I bought some resistance bands to use at home, and a couple of exercise DVD's including Richard Simmons - Sweatin to the Oldies. Anything to get that heart pumping and burn some extra calories. You sound like you have a good attitude. Keep that up and try hard to follow any plans your medical team has for you. Good Luck!

My doctor requires that I see the nutritionist once prior to surgery, 2 weeks post op, then once a month for a year after surgery. I was a little annoyed at first about that, but now I'm happy and can't wait to share my progress with her each time I go in. None of the nutritionist's fees are accepted by insurance so I have to pay out of pocket ($550 covers the year), but it already seems like it's worth it. Good luck at your group meeting. You never know, you might like it and meet some interesting people. I was not thrilled about the nutritionist, either. Hopefully it turns out well for you! Let us know how it goes!

I was diagnosed with a fatty liver. I did a doctor/dietician protein shake diet. Optifast was the brand name. I did the chocolate & strawberry shakes and the Optifast chicken broth as well as the Optifast protein bars. I lived on that stuff for two weeks prior to surgery. I lost 12lbs before surgery, as for my liver, I am not sure it made much difference. I was very tender in the liver area, I think because it was enlarged and was possibly bruised or bumped during surgery. All is good now! Best of luck!

I was on a 2 week liquid only diet. I called it the diet from HELL!! Sugar free drinks like crystal light. I could have 3 cups of ff milk a day and 2 sf fudgesicles. everything else was see through. sf jello, sf clear drinks, sf popsicles, Oh God this was a year ago and I can't remember what else I could have but I know it wasn't much. I thought I was going to die from it but I didn't. I lost 11 lbs that 2 weeks before surgery! Oh yeah, I could have all the broth I wanted.(chicken or beef)

If you are getting 50 ounces in at 3 days post op you are doing well. You are going through a healing process so you can't expect to get in so quickly. After my sleeve 2 years ago it took me 3 to 4 weeks to get that much Fluid in. You'll get to the goal amounts don't rush yourself. I am having a revision to RNY in August so I'm dreading having to do it all again.

My doctors office faxed in my information last Wednesday afternoon and at 8:30am Thursday morning, I received the phone call that I was APPROVED for the Sleeve. I am beyond excited right now. I received a call from the surgeons office and I had to stop taking my Omeprazole for 2 weeks and have a bacteria test done on my stomach. My appt is scheduled for July 5th for the test and then I get to schedule for my surgery, I am hoping for July 23rd. My question for everyone that has already had the surgery, what do I need to take with me for my hospital stay?? Also, I would like to find out approximately how much money will be spent on protein powders.

Falling off the "band" wagon before banding!
btrieger replied to outside*looking*in's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
You have to forget about diets and start thinking about altering your eating habits for the rest of your life. Diets deprive you of certain foods and only make you crave them more. Diets also have end dates. You are in this for the rest of your life. Even after you are banded you will be able to shovel in tons of food until you have restriction and that could take a long time. Throw out the South Beach book and any other fad diet media you have laying around. Do not wait until Monday or another minute. The rest of your life starts now!!!! Start slow. Don't change a thing you are eating, just cut 1/4 of it off and throw it away. Then chew slower so it will take just as long to eat less. Try and eat only 3 meals a day and space them 4-5 hours apart. If you are hungry in between meals, grab a 100 calorie snack. Chips and cookies are fine in moderation. Do not eat out of boredom or convenience because you are walking by a vending machine or the refrigerator. Journal everything that passes your lips. You can do this on paper or online. Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. This is very important. Try and walk at least 150 minutes a week. You can split this up any way you'd like. After you've done this stuff, then you can start thinking about replacing some of what you are eating with healthier alternatives. I have been doing everything I just listed and am dropping 3-5 pounds a week. I am not hungry, nor am I tempted to go to a buffet somewhere. I will be banded sometime next month so I will have a safety net. YOU CAN DO THIS!! -
Well hello, anyone and everyone who might be reading this I'm Nikki, 26 year old soon to be RN who is going full time to nursing school, already have Bachelor's in Biology, been married, getting divorced, moved out, work full time in an ER, so what better to do than get surgery? Not any surgery, as you all know, a life altering all consuming procedure that literally drains me of all my self control and sanity. I guess what I am trying to do with this post is see if there is anyone like me out there. Young, stressed, and wanting nothing more then to live their best life. So I ask you this, question #1, what made you want to get this done? For some of us, like me, it is to be healthy to decrease risks of diabetes or heart disease. Others, also like me, want to look and feel how they do on the inside to be expressed on the outside. I am one week away from my surgery, I have the joy of drinking protein shakes that taste like they want to be food but just can't get seem to get their sh*t together. Can I censor curse on here? Well I am going to! What makes it worse is you can't escape food, even in the comfort of your own home people are eating in your shows, commercials, your neighbors are cooking...I swear I'm not crazy, just theses shakes have me dying to eat! Alright, question # 2... even though some of us are so close to the finish line and are about to get the surgery or we are on lap 2 of the race and are post-op, does anyone just want to quit? In my head I feel like it is so much easier to just be overweight, obese, clog my arteries with delicious fried foods and just accept the fact that people will always look at me funny because I am nothing like the models. But then I remember, I am too stubborn and too determined to die young or live a life where I depend on someone to push me around because I can't waddle any more. I hope none of my crude, blunt, sarcastic demeanor offends anyone..I just hoping to find like-minded support. I live in a state where I have no family and limited friends, most if not all of them don't support my choice to get surgery to fix my weight issue...I guess this is question #3 who else has to deal with backlash, judgement, and the constant "well did you try cardio, how about this diet or this" in their lives? I look forward to hearing anyone's responses to these questions Kisses

I'm needing someone to kick my butt please!
susi1662 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started my journey in April, and I still have a long way to go (due to ins. issues I can't get my paperwork submitted until Jan 2011). I am on my required 6 month diet, and am not doing so well. The first six weeks, I lost 14 lbs, but in the past 2 months, I have neither lost nor gained. I know that I am not eating like I should be, I am falling back on bad habits; but I am now more active than I was before. Maybe that's what's got me maintaining, I don't know. I feel like I am not taking this seriously, since I have such a long time before I get banded. Is anyone else experiencing the same type of thing? I really want to get banded, and I know that once I am, I will be forced to change my eating habits and lifestyle, but I need to start that now! Am I sabotaging myself? Please help!!! -
Is Chopped Liver Considered A Soft Food?
Ladybug28 replied to Jenn1214's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I wouldn't consider liver a soft food, like the doctors are talking of. I have to be on liquids for a full 4 weeks after surgery, 2 wks before. I can't wait to get started though! -
Hey amourette! I'm around but between grad school and teaching full time I haven't been on the sight as much lately. I have at least three days at work where I don't get home until between 6 and 7 pm and then its all I can do to stay awake until bedtime. The fall semester is usually pretty busy up until November, then things begin to get back to normal. That's great about the uniform and less back pain. I'm beginning to realize that I need some smaller clothes as well. When I wear something a bit more fitted to work, everyone comments on how well I'm doing. I've been playing with the clothes in my closet and finding that some that I didn't think would fit, do fit, and that others are simply too big and must go. Unfortunately that means most of my tops are too big, so it looks like I need to hit the resale shops. There's a plus size resale shop close to my house and I'm thinking about seeing what they've got. It will be a whole lot cheaper to get one or two things there and then save my money for the big shopping spree that I know is coming. The best thing about all of this is that I know I will be going on job interviews in the spring, and whether they admit it or not, weight does play a factor in some of the positions I would like to look into. I'm looking into administrative positions for the next school year so that I can start putting my master's degree to work. I still love teaching, but if I want a pay raise I have to move into administration. That really sucks! picardy

One more Major 2019 Resolution!
shedo82773 replied to Jazzy1125's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I HATE SCALES!!! All those years that I felt so humiliated getting on the darn things. Weight Watchers, TOPS NUTRSYSTEM more than 2 or more times. Dr. Appointments. I HATE SCALES did I say that before? LOL But after my RNY it was exciting to weigh 1 time a week. Always on Monday morning. I found out that I can refuse to weigh when I go to the DR, so guess what it has kept me off the scales for 9 months at least. Until the last appointment, she asked me to weigh!! NOPE I told her I would next appointment. I know I am still maintaining between 125 & 130. I JUST HAVE PANIC ATTACKS ABOUT THOSE DARN SCALES!! I'm sorry I got off the wall about them!! I would just say weigh 1 time a week and at ur DR's -
Thats about a 4lb weight loss a week, Surgery date was Feb 27 -13 SW 265 also the most I ever weighed (she straw that broke the camels back) This includes lots of stalls, and I still consider myself a slow looser, I have a sleeve of steel, I can eat anything, although I dont usually let myself.

2.5 months out 41 pounds gone forever
kiki1196 replied to jacee's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Congrats! My surgery was the day before yours and I'm down 30 since surgery (40 including pre-op). Lots of stalls for me too. I may be a slow loser but its still so wonderful to lose that much weight in such a short amount of time. I too have a superman sleeve. I control my portions and focus on Protein but nothing but white bread, Pasta and rice are out. It's great. Good luck on the rest of your journey! -
Starting Puree Diet
fyre_storm replied to Losing weight's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oh those noises won't stop lol I'm three months out and it still does it. Your gonna feel weird sensations but that's normal. Take baby steps!!! -
Thank you so much for posting this. Your story is inspiring for me and the timing couldn't have been better. I have been told today by my band doctor that I may have mechanical failure and I have to decide whether to remove my band. My story: I was banded 4/4/05. Initially I did very well, lost weight, felt good, no complications. About 6 months into it I starting having what the doctor told me was esophageal spasms and after several months of recurrent "spasms" that made me want to commit suicide, we discovered that they were gall bladder attacks. Since the gall bladder removal my weight loss has essentially stalled, maybe 20 lbs over 3 years then in the last 6 months or so I have gained 30! YIKES! From the time I was banded I have not been able to lay on my back for extended periods of time or sleep on my back. I wake with chest pain and pressure and I nearly always wake with a sore throat. All doctors tell me it's reflux. After 5 years of this "reflux", I started getting worried about the health of my esophagus so I contacted my band doctor. He says that some rare cases of "mechanical failure" occur where the esophagus just doesn't have the motility to deal with the device that's been implanted. We could try Nexium and if the symptoms do not improve, the only way to solve the problem is band removal. *I've done the Nexium thing before and haven't noticed any change. I'm willing to try again, but I think I'm headed for a tough decision here. It's like I'm losing a friend and I really fear gaining all of my weight back. He offered the VGS as an option, but I chose the band because I didn't want my anatomy altered. I want to cry.

Doctor Visit Nsv/and The Negatives Around It.
MellioM replied to TracyC's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am right there with u. I am a little over 3 weeks out and I am hungry! I can't wait for my first fill next week. I need some restriction to help slow me down. I am not expecting magic but I am eating more than the 6oz my doc says should be enough. Well, it's not! I eat more like 8-12 oz. !!!! -
I keep thinking that this too wont work for me....
Angel_P posted a topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have had way too much time to think, since I am a student and took the summer off so I could have the surgery and not have to worry about anything but recovering after. Well all this time that I have, has just been no good. I just keep thinking about all the diets I have tried in the past, in the beginning with all of the greatest of intentions, only to get tired of trying and seeing little results and putting on more weight. And I think that I am going to sabatoge myself. On the other hand, I have never had surgery, and I think that it would be absolutely ridiculous to have a WLS to only work against it and eventually have to have it reversed. I am just really scared of failing once again to lose this weight. I think through it all, I am just determined to not fail! If I can make it through a full week of liquids ( after making my fiancee a homemade blueberry cheesecake ice cream cake for his birthday) without cheating, than I can succeed at this too. Sorry this post is so long, I guess I just needed to work this out in my head. -
Lorraine, Yes you are supposed to be on a liquid diet for 2 weeks prior and then just clear liquids for a little bit after, and I have been on my liquid diet for 2 weeks already, tomorrow is my surgery, I have been doing liquids only since the 5th, but you have to remember not all doctors ask for you to do 2 weeks of a liquid diet some ask for more some ask for less it all depends on your doctor and where you live. So just depends. But good luck, being new is a good thing, just make sure you talk to your doctor, and get all your answers. Don't leave anything on the table. I found that is the best thing, and if you have questions that you don't think you necessarily have to ask your doctor, ask people here, they are more than willing to help and answer whatever it is you have questions to.

For those of you who chose the band with a BMI <40
Mrs Sabre replied to brittu's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My insurance covers 35-40 BMI with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease. I have none of these, but do have 7 other conditions/risk factors that would be improved or cured by weight loss. I was initially denied and wrote one appeals letter. Two weeks later the denial was overturned and my surgery approved. I'll be banded June 5th. I'm not saying every insurance company works this way, but it may be worth a shot before trying Mexico? Also, I've heard a number of folks having great experiences with various MX doctors, but some have had difficulty finding fill doctors in the US. You may want to research this too before deciding? -
I was unable to lift more than 20 lbs for the first two weeks...
