I hadn't tried in so long to cross them, or I could cross them and it cut the breath out of me. But now, I feel so feminane when I can cross my leggs. I just had to journal this down.

    NSV: I'm ON the chart!!!

I am sure if I thought about it long and hard I could figure out what it means but I just don't have the brain power right now. So, what does NSV stand for??? HUGE KUDO's to Alex. Great job! Keep it up.

    Feeling frustrated

I am 3 years out. Right after surgery I lost weight for the first 3 weeks and then had an almost 4 week stall. Yes it was frustrating but expected. During that stall I dropped 2 sizes. When I did break the stall I lost 4.5 pounds overnight. Just stick with the program and it will work, I promise. For me hopping on the scale during the stall wasn't stressful so I did it everyday. For others you may want to move to weighing yourself once a week on the same day or only weigh in at follow-up visits or once a month. Everyones approach to the scale is different. During your stall you need to look for NSVs. When I moved to maintenance I personally need to weigh every day. It keeps me honest in my eating choices.
  6. I was out mowing the lawn on Monday. Today I had to ask a neighbor to come over and jump start my car. He asked me " why was your daughter mowing your lawn yesterday?" My daughter is 39yo..... I love my neighbor!!!!
  7. Congrats on your NSV!!!!!!!!!!!! I know how you feel. I found an old XL size T-Shirt in my closet and put it on just for fun AND IT FIT!!!!!!!! Here I was thinking I was still a 2XL kinda guy. Now I have to rethink my whole wardrobe.

    NSV.. With cows!?

That's awesome. I usually just trail ride (and I have no doubt my horse appreciated carrying 90 less pounds on our 20 mile, 3500 foot climb to a lake basin yesterday) But I do join in on sorting and team penning for fun in the local arena in the winter when our trails are under 10-20 feet of snow. Love your pictures....great NSV!

    NSV....

I went to church and for the 1st time in years I knelt without leaning on the pew behind me. My gut wasn't pushing me back. Yay! I also walked out if my Capri pants! I had to bite the bullet and buy a smaller pair by 2 sizes
  12. I was banded 04/09/2010, Begining weight in Jabuary was 325ls. Current weight as of today 266. So woth my stats out of the way I wanted to share with you all my NSV. About three weeks ago my 13 year old son who is a senior patrol leader for his scout troop tells me he is going on a 20 mile hike in three weeks. I start to thinking and decide what the heck lets try it! Well I left Thursday through some of the roughest country in the Arizona mountains, 7 miles a day with a 40lb back pack my 10 year old son, my 13 year old son, 17 other scouts, and two other leaders. We finished the trip yesterday at 2pm, what an experience. I want to thank the LAP-BAND® for helping me take my life back. If I hadnt made the decision to get teh LAP-BAND® I would have waived to my boys as they went on this awesome journey, instead I got to share it with them! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Here are a couple pics.

Why am I not losing weight?!

Generally when I had my surgery, I gained several pounds when I was in the hospital because they pumped my body full of fluids. It took several days before I lost that weight and arrived at my pre-surgery weight. So please do not panic at this stage. Just keep following all the rules and you should see the pounds begin to fall off sharply. It is important to walk every day for around a half hour during the first year post-op. Also some people get so wrapped up in watching the scale that it stunts their weight loss because it totally stresses them out. To correct this problem, some individuals simple chose do not to weigh themselves and rather use the weight from their visit to the surgeon's office. So if stress is a major factor, then relax and consider alternatives to relieving the stress. My primary goal in getting gastric bypass surgery was to correct my severe health conditions. I had high blood pressure and diabetes and a host of other adverse health issues. Most of these were solved in the first couple weeks. I am around 4 1/2 years post op at this point and they remain in remission. So generally I met my primary goal almost immediately. Everything else was gravy. I measures success after this in terms of pounds lost, in reduced waist sizes and the ability to fit into smaller clothes, and also into non-scale victories (NSV's). As an example of an NSV, I had bought a beautiful Mazda Miata convertible when I retired but I had gained so much weight that I could hardly get inside it unless I had the top down. Now it fits like a glove.
  14. HELLLLOOOOOO!!! I'm glad to see you two are doing well! Karly1: Are you using band-aids over your incision sites? Sometimes the adhesive can get irritating on your skin. If you're not using band-aids, is your clothing rubbing on your incisions? That can really irritate them and keep them from healing. You may to cover them (no ointment though unless your doctor says to) just to keep a padding between them and your clothes. Hope that helps! Leslie: Girl you are rockin'!!! Look at you...24 pounds lost??? Fantastic! I'm glad you got to advance...I can now have Peanut Butter and eggs! WOO HOO! I still don't feel full for long. Everything just slips right through the band. Can't wait for regular food! I am doing well. I don't have a scheduled exercise session on the days I work. I work 12 hour shifts and run my ass off the whole time. The other days I've been doing okay. I walk, but have been released to start riding my bike. YAY!!! I'd rather ride any day! I took my measurements today. I know I'm a little late, but couldn't find my measuring tape, so had to buy a new one! I want to use that as NSV down the line. I wrote down everything! Neck, ankles, knees, forearms, wrists and ring size!! Overkill???? LOL ~C

    Sleep study?

I consider finding out I have sleep apnea and getting it treated on of the best NSV of getting banded so far. I feel SOOO much better after about a month on CPAP. My surgeon required a sleep study for me. For DH is was suggested, not required. He goes by your BMI, neck size for men and if you have any symptoms. Given the implications of problems it can cause if unknown, didn't bother me at all.

    First fill, and NSV!

That must have been Amazing! I have to say that I have had to use an extender and it was mortifying. Even though the flight attendant was quiet about it- I felt like everyone knew and I just wanted to crawl up and die... I will be flying in February and will remember your wonderful story! My NSV for the day- I am home today unexpectedly as my girls are sicky poo (little fevers and ear infections) There was nothing for me to eat- so I took out a weight watchers lasagna and was full after eating 1/2 of it!!! I remember when I would eat one and laugh because it felt like I hadn't eaten at all. Then I'd have a salad, then some fruit, & still feel unsatisfied... How insane! See you Sunday!!!

    1st goal

No you're on the right track! I need to make a formal goal list. I have goals in my mind both weight and NSV's like getting in my protein everyday or being confident in a bathing suit, but need to write them down! Congrats on hitting your first goal. The .4 will be off in the next day or two! lol!

    Plateau Problems

There are many reasons for plateaus and everyone experiences them from time to time, some more often than others. It could be Water retention (possibly from Aunt Flo), less activity, not enough Protein, or your body could be going through an adjustment. You could be losing inches during this time. Don't cut back on food (if you snack you could back on that) and DO continue getting your protein and fluids in. Stay away from the scale for a week or two. Focus on NSV's (non scale victories) like clothes fitting better, not needing a medication, climbing those stairs w/o being winded, or whatever changes you are noticing in your life. These are the little things that mean so much more than a scale number and are the things you are working hardest for. Celebrate every one of them! The scale WILL move again, and most likely you WILL stall again eventually. Note: My first and only stall happened at 7 months out. It was a doozey, lasting almost TWO WHOLE MONTHS! :-)

    The NEW "I'm Fat"

You know one of the best things about this forum is on matter how you feel about somethng, there is always someone and usuallu many someones, that feel the same way and understand what we are feeling. I alsoi never looked in mirrors if I could help it. I hated trying on clothes at store because of the evil 3 way mirrors! Tended to shop a lot on line or just buy and return if it didn't fit. No matter how many time my DH and DD tell me how good I am doing and how much better I look, I still see in the mirror, fat. There seems to be a short in my brain somewhere that can see the changes and process the sizes I have grown out of but still see me as fat. I am well aware that I have a long way to go yet but I have a hard time seeing where I have been and congratulating myself. I have noticed that I am slowly reaching acceptance for the way I look now and smiling with the NSV that happen along the way. My latest smile- standing in the grocery line and I had to move my cart to the end of the line and I was able to pull it right past me without having to step into the next door cashiers space to do it! Did make me smile!

    The NEW "I'm Fat"

Northernsun That's a fantastic NSV. The body dysmorphia that allowed us to get obese does a number on our heads during the slide down to normal too. What more can a person do, other than trust the image in the mirror and the words of people we love? Poeple are shocked when I tell them I only looked at my face in the mirror. Good to know there's a group of us out there.
  23. I dreaded this day. I knew it would come. I travel 6-8 times a year for work and was hoping to keep working at home and save my pennies until I absolutely had to buy clothes. Well I was surprised with a travel request from boss and off to Texas am headed on the 18th I've lost 42 pounds so far. Many of my pants still fit with a belt and some without. I just needed tops. I shopped downstairs in the store for the first time in at least 12 years maybe more. No more woman's section. I started with extra large tops and found a couple float extra large dresses. Wow Wow Wow They were too big! I've been wearing size 16 from 2002-2013 and hen was in an 18 I bought large tops I bought a size 14 DKNY dress that fits me snugly and perfect. Thank goodness spanx still fit I bought one dress in extra large but am returning it. I tried it on 4 more times and it's supposed to be loose and flowy. It's just a pinch too lose going for a large I cried in the dressing room.

    Turtles???

Poodles, this is an excellent question, but unfortunatley, I don't know if you will know you are a Turtle until you are one. When I was banded, I just knew I was going to be a rabbit, I was going to be a weight loss superstar. But things didn't quite turn out that way for me... There is of course, the possiblity that you will be a Turtle, but more likely you will be a rabbit, most people lose the "average" 1-2 pounds a week, very few actually don't. And like Cashley said, it is important to look at the average loss you have, not maintaining a weekly loss. I think a lot of poeple have unrealistic expectations of their band and expect to lose 100 pound in six months, or nine months. And that simply isn't realistic for bandsters. I think that 50-70 pounds a year is much more realistic, so don't get discouraged if you don't drop like a Bypass patient. Don't get discouraged when you hit those plateaus, since everyone seems to. They seem to be one's body's way of regrouping, and recompacting for the next weight loss push. I know it's easy for me to tell you to not be discouraged, but hey, that's what I do. I really believe that if you follow the plan, learing a new lifestyle that includes a sensible diet and excersize, you will not be a Turtle. But you know what? Even though I'm a Turtle, I think i have the most amazing list of NSVs, but only because I capture and hold onto each of them like they are some precious gift.
