  1. Oh Amber... I really hope things pick up for you too.. That is my biggest concern... not losing the weight... It was slow going with the lap band... and I'm hoping that the sleeve will be faster... For me, It took forever to get the band tight where I could and would lose weight and then, I started having the problems with the blockages... Since removing the Fluid from my band... I've gained about 20 lbs back... which is so discouraging. My conversion is not scheduled until August 9, so, I'm a big concerned about the continued weight gain....
  2. hi i was banded just a few weeks before you were (December) and im down a very happy 44 lbs. My Dr is very happy with my progress, says this is the best way to do it , averageing 1-1.5lbs a week. (Im on my 6th fill) i have occasional plateaus but nothing im not expecting. This part may not work for everyone, but i keep a daily weight diary. I dont worry about a 2 lb weight gain as i put it down to digestion, hormones, water weight etc, but if i gain more then 2 lbs i can easily look on Myfitnesspal .com and see what ive been eating, exercising etc. This has been a huge help for me, plus the weight diary visualy shows me how my weight is going, usually down .....down....down......... Just when i think i havent lost any weight i look back on my weight diary and can see " Oh wait a minute, ive lost 3 lbs in 2 weeks ! Um .......im ok with that !" This helps. alot. Good luck to you !!!

High Tsh Levels (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

A high TSH does explain why you could be gaining weight. The function of the thyroid is inversely proportionate to the actual result. Your result was high therefore the function of your thyroid is low. That equals weight gain, fatigue, skin and hair changes and blah blah blah. This is great for you though. Being on something like synthroid or levothyroxine should make it easier to lose weight. I'm not saying it is going to be to the point that you won't need a sleeve (I'd cry if someone told me I couldn't get mine next month) but it should make it easier for you to lose before and after your surgery. You also may get some additional energy and feel better too. It's good to get all this stuff straighted out before surgery. Your hormones will be going crazy enough after surgery you don't need anything addition to add to it. It usually only takes 2-4 weeks for the medication to be effective enough to change your labs and then they should make a decision on surgery. Good luck! I hope all works out but I am sorry for your bump in the road

    Band A Little Tight? Dangerous

Boniluu - heart goes out to you. Right now, I too am tight - probably too tight. I have PBed daily since my fill 2 weeks ago. The chest pains, slime and reguritation is awful. That said, I have dorpped 8 pounds in 14 days (the 4 I gained + 4 more). I see the doctor again July 6th and unless things change, I will ask for a very slight unfill. I worry about getting enough nutrition plus these "episodes" are very embarrasing. I actually drive around with a roll of papertowels next to me in the car and carry them with me. I wanted a good fill because of the weight gain so I got what I asked for. I can get fluids down and Protein shakes so I won't starve. Hey guys, take care and hang in there. Melinda in Florida

    6 Month Diet

No, my insurance didn't cover the shakes. I have to fighting my primary physician once a month for 6 months. We talk about diet, exercise, what my measurements are, weight gain/loss. I have a BMI of 41 so I worry about losing any weight and then being denied.. but the new surgeons office I went to said that it wouldn't matter if I lost weight now because the insurance would go off my first weigh in with them. ?? They would like to see a 20lb weight loss prior to surgery. Anyone experience this?

    Just Woke Up From Surgery!!

When I have surgery I always wake up feeling really puky! I did tell the Doctor/Nurses and everyone prior that this happens. Sure enough as soon as the nurse came to try to wake me in the recovery room, as I was coming too, I said Im gonna hurl!! I didn't but they had the stuff ready right there to go in my IV. Just let them know if you have a tendency.. they can make arrangements to have it near. They could get it anyway but I wanted to make sure!!!! You should feel much better tomorrow! hang in there... Just rest and recover.. and try to drink the fluids when you get back on them... keep in mind IF your on alot of IV at the moment, you might notice a some weight gain from the IV solution.. it will go away... So my suggestion is try to stay off the scale for a week or so...
  8. hi so it wasnt until about 4 months ago i started thinking about the land band, someone who i know but not to well got it almost a year ago i believe we are close in body type i might be a little smaller but i also feel given my weight gain in the last 3 years ill be another 10 pounds heavier by next year. i saw her on Sunday after not seeing her for a month and she looked like she had lost another 10 pounds! i feel like its so unfair, i work out 6 days a week and lose nothing! ive been doing weight watchers a month and ive only lost 2 lbs. i had my blood work done its not my thyroid. the doctor told me to count my calories better and it was my genetics i would always have this problem with my weight. i have gained 35 pounds in 3 years, i seem like i cant control a diet strict enough to lose weight i already work out more then most people i know. the last two years of my life have been a constant battle with my weight and every day i am constantly feeling self-conscious about my body, disgusted and saddened with how i look. while on vacation 2 months ago i felt this the worst i ever have. i was so uncomfortable i didnt get to enjoy the beach the way i should have. i couldnt wear shorts nor a swim suit i was constantly trying to cover up while the other girls in family ran around in there small outfits i was sad. so here are my questions. is this right for me. i am 31, 170ish pounds, 5'2 with a bmi of 31. the Quest for lap band grew even more stronger in the last few days when lauren manzo came out about her surgery, for the past few years i felt i related to her best we have so much in common including career. i think she would wonderful with her 30 pound loss, i would like to be 40-50 pounds lighter without the constant yoyo of weight loss and gain.
  9. That is exactly what I'm afraid of. Loose skin and deflated boobs. My husband loves my breasts. After 3 pregnancies, weight gain/loss, nursing etc they do droop some but like I've told him before, in my head it's not as bad since they are huge right now but when they are droopy AND tiny it may be a different story. lol! Oh well, I'll take that any day over being fat
  10. What I was told before is that when you have one addiction like food and give that up then most likey you turn to something else that you will use as your crutch. I personally don't think it's a high percentage but it is a possibility. I seen a special on this on discovery health. I also believe if you don't work out the underlying issues that has caused weight gain then of course you'll have issues.
  11. My appetite goes back and forth on me as well. Some meals I feel like I could eat a full 5-6oz amount of food before I feel full, and other days I'm full at 3oz. I know my appetite opens up after doing longer, more strenuous exercise. I also get that slightly bloated, distended feeling around the intestinal area for a few days after. I'm still eating the good stuff -- lean meats, green veggies, skip the fats, the refined carbs. There is no weight gain, in fact mixing it up from higher caloric days to lower seems to help break minor stalls. I wonder if when we eat "more" ounces the food is not digesting in the stomach enzymes enough before being pushed into the next stage? When food is not broken down enough, usually the intestines are unwilling or unable to grab all the nutrients and kind of wants to "get it out of here" faster. I told my husband I needed his help, since he's usually with me for every meal to make sure I get back to measuring. I got to a point I could eyeball 2oz of chicken, fish, steak on the nose. Same with veggies, yogurt, etc. But when eating out, other sleevers in my support group have told me to ALWAYS get an empty plate and measure your food before you take one bite. The worst things to do is to split with someone or order a full entree and not portion out what you will eat right then and there. My weakness is that my husband will order say, a bento box. I eat 4 pieces of sashimi, some edamame, then I'll have a little chicken teriyaki...oh and a bite of salad, maybe one piece of the roll he ordered as well (rice picked off)....did I mention I had a few sips of miso Soup before? Instead, I need to put what I SHOULD eat on a small plate and STICK TO IT without picking away at the box. The other thing I had to get back to doing was food journaling. I got off about a month ago because I started to rotate the same meals, Snacks, etc. so much I practically had the numbers memorized and I got comfortable. However, I think it's a good reminder to journal the meals and snacks before their even eaten. That way I know when to stop. Fact is, my stomach is pretty satisfied with 2-4oz of food, or about 200 calories. It's the head hunger that kicks in after that. Not always bad, just remembering what it's like to be at a summer cookout, having fun, letting my guard down, distracted with conversation. Does that make sense?

    Oh My.....

I was a total diet pepsi person all my life. I have read studies where diet coke and coke cause weight gain. The chemicals are horrible. So I decided to get the sleeve and to have a healthier life style. I have gone organic and basically eat the healthiest of foods. Afterall I choose to eat leas and healthier! Not enough room in my stomach for junk.
  13. On a similar note I wonder - what if friends start treating me differently in a negative way?? My best friend has already distanced herself from me, and I've only lost 10 lbs. We have been friends 12 years. She was never overweight until a couple years ago, and even still she's not too bad (about 200 lbs). I have a feeling that I always made her feel better about herself by being the big fat ugly friend. I am not sure how she will react once I lose all of this weight. Has anyone had people in their life who started treating them negatively after losing weight/gaining confidence?

Does Anyone Else Have A Controlling Mother ????

Firstly u wont have ruined anything by drinking tomato soup, I had never heard of clear liquids only here in the UK .. our post-op is liquids i drank my weight watchers tomato soup from day 5 i think it was .. i was on liquids 4 weeks post op, then mushies 4 weeks then normal food, just dont do any liquids that have lumps in or u couldnt drink with a straw( not literally) , thats a liquid then As for comtrolling mothers.. did u think maybe your relationship with her was responsinble for your weight gain or some of it, it might well be u have to change your contact with your mum in order to cope with making the band a success for you. If she tells your doctor about the tomato soup he would probably laugh at her so dont worry about it, but start thinking about what is best for you and what u need, u have to come first till u have lost the weight u need to

    Dissapointment

I know this isn't on topic, but last week (had surgery 5/10 and 2 cc fill 6/7) had cramps, water weight gain and a little "mini" period! Hey, I haven't had a period in months and didn't miss it! But last week I was ready to eat too much and all the excitment that can come with that time of the month. However, back on track now and always eating my protein first, then the rest.
  16. I had my surgery 2 yrs ago in May. I've lost 100 lbs in the 1st yr. I just recently gained 5 lbs. I've been eating sugar & lots of it. Just 2 days of NOT eating anything white & just eating "GREEN & LEAN". I'm down 3 lbs. Has anybody else had a weight gain? It is so EASY to fall back into bad eating merry-go-round.

    Anyone Failed With The Sleeve?

Thanks ya'll... As far as the eating, I'm thinking I'll be okay... since I had the band and learned to eat slowly, small portions and stay busy... I will say, that I know part of the reason for the weight gain since having the band Fluid taken out... (other than the fact that it's like not having a restriction at all) is, I am eating a whole lot more and the "grazing" is back... Just can't seem to stop the never ending "hunt" for something to put into my mouth. That was really NOT the case after the lap band... I was able to feel much more satisfied... So... I'm hoping I'll be one of those folks who can get back on trac with the weight loss...

My Journey So Far With Kaiser

Chrysallis: I started with a low BMI and I have done really well losing my weight. I had my surgery through Kaiser in OC and the surgeon wasn't concerned whether I had a weight gain or not. In fact they were more concerned I didn't meet the criteria for surgery with a lower BMI. It worked out for me, I had diabetes and high chloresterol. So I really know that you are in good hands. CONGRATS!

    You Don't Need Surgery...

Just thought of something else to add. When I went for my seminar, tehy giv eyou a questionare/ Why do you think you need lapband? Most of us can and have lost weight. I get bored with it and that is why I (and most others) gain it back. Getting bored was the number 1 answer. After 40 lbs with WW, I got bored. Have you tried liquid proein diet? I lsot a lot of weight, not sure how much, but after you stop the diet, weight gain starts because it is not normal way to "eat". My stomach was so sensitive, I ate dry cheerois between meals. Best wishes. Karen
  20. Did anyone get pregnant before the recommended 12-16 months? If so, how much weight gain? Any complications? Were you able to have natural childbirth?

    Im A May Sleever!

I wasn't placed on a pre-op diet so no. I actually feel like I lost out on so much. Everyone seems to have had so much care on here. I was to go to a class titled "Mindful Eating" which is offered once a month and I was out of town and have yet made it up. I did go to a Nutritional class but that was it. So I absolutely feel lost here. I'm not sure if it's because I can tolerate most foods I'm not losing or if I'm just slow. I might mention I'm on medication for my back which is known for weight gain. I don't want to use that as an excuse but it could be part of why I'm not losing at a faster rate. What is your diet right now?
  22. I am almost 2 years out - sleeved in 2010. My struggles are that I can eat whatever I want. This has helped me to regain a little weight from my lowest (9 lbs ago) Post surgery is all about choices once you are healed. Because slider foods are easy (chips/candy/junk) goes in and out of the stomach with little resistance, now I can eat more than I hoped even with the sleeve. If I stick with the plan and make great choices, I don't gain weight and can even lose weight. Decisions - good or bad food. This is what maintenance is all about. I have no regrets save not doing this sooner for myself. Best wishes in your choice ahead. Edit for another post: It is really hard to confess when you have gained back some weight. Ignorance is not the reason I gained weight back, my stupidity and gluttony is the reason. I allowed sweets along with unlimited sliders back into my life. Working towards losing back the weight. I am still well within normal range of weight even with weight gain. Just don't want to get out of hand, so I progress towards my lowest (Think I was too skinny though for my height)
  23. One thing I would HIGHLY recommend you research is the issues with malabsorption with the GP. In short, after about 12 to 18 months, the body typically resets itself and while it might only actually absorb half the calories you are consuming for that first 12 to 18 months, steadily your body will adjust and absorb more calories until you are almost where you were prior to surgery. So, if you were used to eating say 1,500 to 2,000 calories after surgery, your body is likely going to only absorb half of that in the beginning. Eventually, your body will adjust and it will start seeing all or nearly all of those calories leading to weight gain because you won't realize what is happening with your body. This is most often what leads to re-gain for those that have the GP. Also, understand that you are signing up for frequent labwork for LIFE to be sure your body is getting the necessary Vitamins it needs to keep you from having other health issues. Just imagine if you had this surgery, started regaining weight and left with the side effects of having to take a laundry list of vitamins just to stay healthy. No thank you! Just try to research the best you can. Ultimately you have to feel comfortable with your own choice. Just sharing some of the thoughts that went into how I made my decision for the sleeve. I have absolutely no regrets except that I didn't do it sooner!

    Any Ideas? Been Sick!

Weight gain on reduced calorie intake (defecit) is almost always fluids. If you went from being sick, to now being well-hydrated, any weight gain will be a reflection of rehydration.

    Any Ideas? Been Sick!

Thanks it seems so hard not to think about weight loss regardless how we feel, I am still in here and gained weight, but I got sleeved a month ago may 15th and even with the weight gain I've still lost 9kg.
