Looking for information on doing a Keto based plan. I’m 5 months post op and need ideas on how much protein to consume in a day and how many carbs. Any suggestions out there? Thank you
-
There is reddit keto forum that has tons of information and helpful members. The current recommendations over there is to limit fat intake and eat more protein. They no longer seem to think that protein is turned into glucose. So yes, you can absolutely do a high protein, limited fat, keto. I'm currently trying to do low carb in order to increase weight loss from abdomen as that area is being stubborn. Best of luck.

Hi fellow Louisiana. No date for my surgery just starting this journey, my plan have you go through phases and I'm in the phase 1 Keto type diet right now. Good luck to you! I find it interesting you used to play football, I think that will help you with your success because you've been trained to work hard towards a goal. I will look forward to your updates!

Day 2 of liquids and Im hungry
MadB replied to Zoumommy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 5 too, (only one more day as Friday I start my Clear Liquids for my 3-day final prep for surgery on Monday). I've been drinking the Premier Protein shakes for Breakfast, lunch, and a mid-day snack. I'm lucky in that I get to have a lean meat with a salad for dinner each night though, but that doesn't really help much during the day, haha. I've drank an extra shake on the days it's tough, as well as trying to make sure I get lots of Water in. The only downside I've experienced is that I may be getting "keto breath", though I thought that took longer than just 5 days. Nasty yucky after-taste and odor than I can 'feel' on my breath. Semi-related - Post-Op, do you keep the 'keto breath', since you're still pretty much still on an all protein diet? If so, I foresee needing to buy some mouthwash to carry around with me. -
What are your favorite excuses?
GreenTealael replied to Supersecret's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I avoided telling people about surgery but didnt hesitate to discuss my new diet. This was the 2nd greatest visible change. It looked similar to all the other programs going around : Keto, Whole30, South Beach, Paleo. etc... So I told people I changed my diet. To field anymore questions about it I encouraged the questioners to try my foods instead of me being pressured into trying theirs. That meant I often brought dishes of food I could eat along to events for everyone else to enjoy. I think it becomes more obvious if you make it a big deal and isolate yourself with a tiny Tupperware of food while looking miserable. And not every occasion is meant to be enjoyed with food. Sometimes you can just nurse drinks. Or say your not hungry, you've already eaten. I personally treated my diet transitions as the most natural thing in the world that shouldn't raise suspension because it was obvious yet not dramatized and I was confident in my choices. Good Luck 💚 -
Coconut milk is relatively high in fat and is a staple in the keto diet. Not sure you want to drink it regularly during the initial weight loss phase when your ability to take in food is low...

Post Op diet...keto?
Screwballski replied to t_dulls's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here’s where I break from the pack. I was essentially raised Atlins/KETO. (My mom just didn’t know what it was called.). Margarine was a “fad”. Low-fat, non-fat products were a “fad”. We didn’t eat those. Never had a weight problem. (Mine manifested in my 30’s). The only manner in which I deviate from my prescribed eating program is that I refuse to use low-fat products. Now, 7 weeks post surgery, I’m not going back to KETO right away but I’m building my fats toward that end and my primary is on board. It’s not a fad, it’s yet another lifestyle. It’s not for everyone. However, some folks thrive. -
Apology letter to my rectum
Arabesque replied to Cheyanne Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your title may be laugh too. Thought you were going to talk about the awful constipation &/or diarrhoea. LOL! Corn is one of those foods that can be difficult to digest & therefore pass. It can cause gas & bloating too - it’s the cellulose in it. It is also high in natural sugars (especially sweet corn) so it’s often not included in some diets like keto & in many of our plans for a while. Yes, the mayo, cheese or even the chilli could be causing your body to go nope not for us too. Not sure how far a long you are but maybe give it a break for a while & then see how you go. If you aren’t that far out, your tummy may still be a little fussy & sensitive. -
I could not do the shakes much more than a few months. I went to other forms of protein like the Unjury chicken soup which is 20 grams in a glass of warm water. Much easier to deal with the taste. I also like the protein bars that have low calories..there are a couple out there. Be careful of the keto bars though, they have higher calories. The brands I use have between 130 and 140 calories which is right about where most shakes are. The unjury is only 90 calories or so.

To Lie or Not to Lie
GreenTealael replied to Officially Not Fatty Matty's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Oddly enough I also never lie to strangers or casual acquaintances. It feels very low risk for me. However the people I interact with often or know well is another story. I’ve learned to read the room. If someone earnestly/ privately asks I usually just tell them. They are also so happy to see someone in person that is happy with the their results and doing well/not struggling. But I’ve also had experiences where people very publicly/ loudly (nearly shouting across a room) ask how I lost weight. These interactions feel disingenuous and shaming so I don’t take them seriously. I usually tell these people the most complex set of layered diets and activities (Keto, fasting, glucose monitoring, cheat days, mercury retrograde, belly dancing, etc.) in great detail until they are satisfied. Those people can speculate but will never get the (whole) truth from me. BTW Congratulations on your success! -
You might lose your hair. But what will you gain? Why are you having this surgery? Would you be willing to lose your hair, if it meant adding 20 years to your life? I lost half of my hair when I did keto and it never grew back. I might lose the other half of my hair after I have surgery. The way I see it, my hair is a small price to pay for better health and a longer life. Would I be willing to be bald, if it meant being able to see my grandchildren? You betcha. The people whose opinions matter to me, will still love me even if I don't have hair. Everyone else can kiss my grits. I'll invest in some fun wigs. My husband can have a different woman, every night! LOL! But, chances are, my hair will grow back - and yours will too.

While I think the study is vague and poorly designed, I think breakfast is still hugely important for WLS patients. I know theres a reason that many weight loss programs usually include something along the lines of avoid going more than 5 hours without eating/drinking. Considering that if youre sleeping and eating dinner at reasonable times, youre probably looking at a solid 10-12 hours of not eating from the time you had dinner to waking up. I think balancing your macros/nutrition adequately after WLS becomes substantially more difficult if you dont have breakfast. Even if its just a protein shake. Otherwise its going to get you into a cycle of starving and binging to catch up, which cant be good for the long term success of your WLS, and thats in addition to the previous mention of getting adequate and optimal nutrition. The argument for/against breakfast in non WLS patients is probably far more complicated, especially once you factor in all these gimmicky things like IF KETO and all that ****. But with WLS patients I think the benefits of having breakfast are clear cut

Hello, everyone! It is great to be back, I haven't seen you all in almost two years. I had the sleeve in 11/2015 and to date, I've gained 40 pounds. I'm not happy with the weight gain, but I'm thankful it isn't a huge amount to lose. I had one bite of cake and you know the story, I was back in that crap routine of eating, crap. I'm focused now!! Alright, the point of this post. I'll get to it. ☺️ Keto or no Keto. Last October, I had to get my gall bladder out and since then, whenever I go overboard on fats, I know about it within hours. Therefore, 100% Keto isn't for me. HOWEVER, I read about Dirty Keto. Have any of you tried that and if so, what are your thought? Also, I downloaded Carb Manager, but I can't seem to get the numbers where I want them. This is what I'm aiming for: New carbs: 35 Fat: 23 Protein: 80 Calories: 80 Because this is set for Keto, it isn't letting me hit the numbers exactly. Do you think MyFitnessPal, would be a better fit? Thanks so much and again, it's great to be back! 🤗

Fibromyalgia Sleevers
ILOVETEXAS210 replied to ILOVETEXAS210's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It could be Keto Flu, I haven’t done the sleeve yet but from what I’ve read, the Pre Op diet is low carb. As a result, Keto Flu can happen which mimics Flu like symptoms, which is also a characteristic for us Fibromyalgia sufferers ☹️ -
Pre-Op by a month and I'm scared...
merrymayhem replied to Kris Poole's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had no problems that I know of from regular keto, off and on for years, but it was the super low carb to carnivore that did it! I didn’t know what was going on the first time (Lhermittes and burning patches on my forearms, NP at my dr office said the Lhermittes was “just arthritis”, forgot about the burning patches since this was all long gone by my appointment. Moved to Colorado and had that second flare that lasted a few months and my medical care has been SO much better out here. Even making progress towards bariatric surgery is a huge improvement. Lived in TN and GA previously. My only lasting symptom came in between the flares and just two fingers on my left hand are partly numb. Hope the leg numbness doesn’t affect your mobility too terribly! -
Wow I'm so sorry for all you have been through ???? I've heard good things about the Keto diet, good luck praying for good health ???????? Sent from my N9132 using the BariatricPal App

Bypass but with keto
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to mandy0518's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
THIS!!! I did keto for nearly 8 months. Had REALLY good success...at first. But you can't live like that forever, and if you have a slip up...oh boy. It's like all the weight you lost finds its way back WITH A QUICKNESS!!! And you have to have some carbs, some fats, some calories in your diet to be healthy. Has to be balanced and in moderation, but trying to live on keto forever just isn't feasible. -
Welcome to ketosis. Stronger body odour, bad breath, smelly urine, etc. are renowned side effects of ketosis. It’s like all our natural body secretions suddenly reek. We want to be burning fat but it’s a shame the side effect can be quite offensive. Regularly apply deodorants, pop breath fresheners, shower more regularly. I purchased some body wipe towelettes so I could freshen up a little in the toilet at work. https://hip2keto.com/tips/keto-common-side-effects-smell/

My surgeon recommends low carb, low fat, high protein. I know protein is most important for us, but if we have the room after eating our protein (at this point I hit my protein goal easily each day), what about fats? I'm wondering because there are tons of awesome keto recipes I'd love to try, and after trying a few, my body feels even better and I'm still losing weight at the same pace. But I want to make sure I'm not making some huge mistake if I do this. Edit: if it makes a difference, I'm about 3 months out from surgery and dealing with sugar cravings something fierce, and being able to have peanut butter or something would be awesome for staving off the cravings.

Exactly. Given the protein goals post wls, to achieve the correct ratio of fat required to be Keto-proper is challenging to do while staying under a certain calorie number AND with reduced stomach size. Handy calculator here for info purposes: https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/ I think alot of folks are likely doing something more along the lines of Atkins or Modified Atkins. I did ultra-low carb, with min protein and max calories goals during weight loss phase, and let the fat fall where it may. After goal, it took about 6 mnths to break this habit, and now at 3.5 years out, i basically eat whatever i feel like so long as i stay at or below 1800-2000 cals a day most days (i’m 5’2”). Its worth noting, however, that “whatever i feel like” looks alot different than what it did pre-wls. To the OP: do what works for you until it doesn’t, then do something else. Good Luck! ❤️

1 week post op feeling terrible
FluffyChix replied to Kels7887's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I swear, being hydrated is the key to feeling good and healing fast. Neither @Creekimp13 nor myself had issues with food advancement or I think exhaustion. And I took her advice and treated the fluid like a job. I woke early (to take a medicine) and began drinking early 4oz per hour in the beginning. I would alternate as she suggested with protein drinkings and non-water liquids on alternating hours. And by the first day home, I had gotten in 64oz of liquids (over half of that was coming from water). I'm sorry you're struggling. ((hugs)) If you were heavy into carbs and sugar pre-surgery without going through the Atkins or keto flu, it's also possible, that part of your extreme fatigue is your body converting from being a carb/sugar burner to being a fat burner (which you want). It's a miserable 1-3 week ordeal but once you're through your energy rebounds as long as you don't revert to being a sugar burner again. -
Has anyone tried Keto after VSG?
Hop_Scotch replied to Starry*Night's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hopefully a bump may prompt those who may be doing keto or close to it. I did a search on Facebook using - bariatric keto - there were a number of groups, you may find one of them useful if no response here.
