    December surgery

Met with the surgeon for the final time prior to surgery on Dec 5th. I start liquid diet 10 days prior. SO I will be enjoying a small slice of pecan pie in Thursday. The liquid side consists of a combination of Soups (tomato & cream of types) thinned. broth , Protein Shakes, assorted sugar free jellos (like the green), popsicles, pudding and yogurts and such. The only admonishment is Clear Liquids the day before surgery. It will be the same diet after surgery until advised to proceed to the next step. Obviously this is my teams directions, Your team will probably have their own requirements. Best bet is to follow them. After all, that's why we're paying them the big bucks. Well wishes and prayers to all.

1 week post of and severe diarrhea

Today I had a bit of loose stool. Not too bad but not the norm. I did take extra benefiber, and haven't added anything different so I came to look at this site to see- since I have been pretty much eating the exact same things for two to three weeks- and my yogurt has one of things you listed as sugar alcohol <1g I didn't see it as an issue. Maybe it's that or something else. I'm thinking I should drink some extra fluids to compensate. Scared but excited.
  4. I was five months out at my first post-surgery Thanksgiving, so in a different place than you are. I had an ounce or two of turkey with gravy and a tablespoon or two of sweet potatoes and stuffing. I probably had some vegetables, too. I remember I brought a container of pumpkin-flavored Greek yogurt with me to eat while everyone else ate pumpkin pie. in the years since then, I've eaten what I want, just in small portions. At 7.5 years out, I try to eat sensibly at holiday meals and not make a pig of myself. *Usually* it works...

    Dumping or lactose intolerance?

About 9 grams of protein. I’ve had other milk based things and it seems to be hot or miss. Milk drinks make me nauseous but yogurt and cottage cheese has been fine. It was just odd given the short period and ingredients.

    Dumping or lactose intolerance?

Mmm maybe? How much protein was there? Since you are on soft foods maybe you can narrow things down by trying a low sugar low fat Greek yogurt. ( on second thought, stick to doctors orders) There’s various degrees of lactose intolerance too. It could even be your body reacting to soft foods vs. liquids. I have found that the dumping can be lessened or controlled with mild exercise and combining with protein. I probably wouldn’t be testing too much, your body is still deeply healing. As always you should talk with your team if you aren’t sure. They see more people and know what to look for, and what to avoid or enhance.

    Waiting

I had my surgery in the pandemic. It should have been a 4 month wait but ended up being 8. It broke me at times but the information I gained while waiting and reading back pages of this forum really set me up for success. I knew exactly what to expect. In the New year the time will fly for you. You will be so busy getting your house ready [ nesting] and then doing your pre-op diet. I made broths for the freezer and bought a mixture of foods for the early days like instant porridge and a variety of protein yogurts etc. Being older and disabled at the time I didnt have much energy while recovering so was really glad of this prep work.

    December surgery

Congratulations on your date! Sending positive thoughts for a smooth, successful surgery and recovery. I have an upper endoscopy on Wednesday, when my surgeon will look at my hiatal hernia and ulcer which he will fix during my RYN when it is scheduled. But, he will cut some polyps off on Thursday so I will be on a liquid diet Thursday and Greek yogurt for two weeks afterward so I feel you. You have a scheduled date! That's exciting! September surgery buddies!!

I agree on the stalls. I know its normal and expected but I still felt like a failure. I wish I could eat chicken more. Its the perfect food to get the protein without the extra fat. Right now I eat mostly ground pork because it has less fat than the beef I used to buy and its even cheaper then beef too. So win win but still not as good as chicken lol. What do you eat for breakfast that has chicken? I have not been liking eggs so breakfast has been my hardest meal for protein unless I eat yogurt. Chili has been my favorite food atm. I bought some Hormel turkey chili and it was pretty yummy and not too bad for me, although seemed high in calories.
  10. I Love this and agree, I also appreciate the post up above the protein breakdowns in different foods. I do not do protein shakes everyday but that means I am ensuring I am hitting my protein goals. I love Protein yogurts like the Oikos triple zero brand-can add additional protein powders here; I also add unflavored protein or vanilla flavored protein to my oatmeal ( I love oatmeal in colder weather months fiber + protein)-this can get me to close to 40 grams of protein in the morning . You may need to meal prep to ensure you are getting what you need till you can eyeball it and know. Also, Vitamins are KEY.

    Snacking at night…

Yeah, I was always a nighttime snacker. Now I use it to my advantage, I suppose. I save some of my calories/protein allotment for nighttime. I have yogurt or a proffee at night usually and sometimes I have fruit, it just depends on what I'm feeling that night. I think I consume more protein/calories than most do because I'm extremely active at the gym. Five days of cardio/strength, plus long trail rides on Saturdays. So snacking is fine for me as long as it's decent foods. What kind of snacks are you having? You say you feel like you can take in more during snacks than during meals? It's probably dependent upon the types of foods that you're eating. If you're having solid proteins like chicken, fish, etc during meals, they're more filling and fill you up fast. A lot of "snack foods" ie: chips, cookies, nuts, etc are slider foods so they slide right through your pouch, and you can consume more of those than protein dense foods.
  13. I was drinking at least two protein shakes per day for the first five months after my surgery. Since I couldn't drink dairy I have found some non dairy yogurts. i have slowly stopped drinking my shakes because I have found food is better for me. I just recently found I can drink whey isolate protein water so I sometimes have one of those per day. That way I get my water and some protein in if needed. I track my food intake to make sure to get my protein in and if I'm lacking in protein then I grab a protein water so I don't have to worry about the shakes anymore.

    How much food?

I had GS in March and I am surprised by how little I can eat still. My breakfast is always a protein shake (which takes me 1-2 hours to finish), lunch is either a sargento balanced breaks or a good culture cottage cheese cup. Dinner is a few bites of whatever my husband cooks....literally 3-4 bites is all. I get full off of a half a cup of soup. I know this is what I wanted, but it is mentally difficult some days as I want to be able to eat enough to feel satisfied and that doesn't happen when you can only have a few bites. Cottage cheese or yogurt is about the only food I can eat a normal amount of and that's getting old!
  15. Does anyone have vitamin suggestions? I am 5 weeks out from surgery. I used bariatric fusion soft chews and the bar is so high now cause it is honestly like candy. I thought of subscribing to it and getting 4 packs at a time but it isn't the best pricing, although if needed I will do it for sure. I initially got them for the first month so I wasn't dealing with massive tablets right away. This week I implemented tablets again and OMG I regret it immediately. I had the WORST nausea since getting this procedure. I was so close to vomiting, my heart was accelerating, and I was shaking. I took it with yogurt in the morning. I haven't had anything happen to me when it comes to my stomach even the first few days after surgery. I am avoiding tablets and capsules for now. My doctor also told me to not use gummies due to the sugar. I am open to gummies if they are sugar free. I would like to eventually buy in bulk but wanted to explore my options before I commit to the soft chews. Does anyone also have suggestions for calcium citrate? Those tablets are even worse! I used caltrate chewables but was reminded it was the wrong one! Let me know what you think folks!

    Sugar free situation!!

I really liked turkey meatballs at that stage. You can do homemade ones (which might be preferable, you absolutely can make them without breadcrumbs in them for NO carbs), or you can buy them in a bag but get quality ones that aren't all filler. An advantage to making your own is you can control how they're seasoned (I made "gyro seasoned" ones and dipped them in tzaziki sauce, for a dollop of extra protein because it was made with greek yogurt...they were actually really good cold in a packed lunch, even). You could do ground chicken with taco seasoning and dip them in salsa. Endless possibilities.
  17. I bought canned soup and strained them, only drinking the broth. This really opened up the flavor window, they all taste different. Rather than plain boring broth. You can always add unflavored protein powder to it too. I didn't so I wouldn't know how to do it. Other people ate what was left of the soup so it didn't go to waste. I was allowed yogurt, no chunks. You could add that if it is in your plan. Greek yogurt is high protein. They have gatorade zero with protein now, (considered clear protein drinks). I tried a few different ones, gatorade was my favorite. You could also try thinning out the protein shakes to change the consistency. Or get powder and make different mixtures. For example, I used sugar free lemonade and mixed strawberry protein for a strawberry lemonade protein shake. BUT I would also add more like 10-12 OZ of lemonade to thin it out and it was more like a drink rather than a thick shake. I have heard of people getting crafty, like vanilla powder and rootbeer flavored water for a rootbeer float. Or orange flavor with vanilla protein for a creamsicle. You get the point. haha I haven't tried any of this except my strawberry lemonade one, so I don't have an opinion on how they taste. Just a few suggestions, you got this!

    How much food?

I have never been able to eat much at one sitting so I have 4 or 5 small meals a day. Breakfast -100gms of protein yogurt and a large latte Lunch - 25gms cheese, 25 grams deli meat and a satsuma or cucumber and tomato or 1 slice of super seeded bread with ham and soft cheese A homemade milk shake Supper - 50 gms meat, 2 tbsp veg and gravy. Or 150 gms chicken curry with a tiny salad or 100 gms fish with a sauce and a tbsp of veg. I am still unable to eat pasta and rice and have never liked potato products, Supper 2 - I will eat any leftover food from my earlier supper plate then have a low cal ice lolly. I am a lolly addict. I openly admit it. If I have room and need more protein, I will have a protein pudding or 25 gms of cheese and a piece of fruit I record about 60 - 80 grams of protein a day and 900 - 1200 calories a day. At the end of this month, I am 1 year out. I am trying to up my protein and calories because when I have a busy day, I get very tired. I am one of the lucky ones, I have little appetite

    Travel food suggestions?

For your road trips, can I suggest nuts, jerky or biltong, deli meats, satsumas, children's pack lunch food like crackers and cream cheese dippers. Instant porridge pots if you can get hot water. Peperami mini sticks, Babybel cheese and Milk. Are you allowed to take a small cooler bag on the plane? You could then take little tubs of foods like egg salad or less smelly chicken salad. Guacamole or hummus and protein chips. Fruit salad. I researched the food on the aeroplane and found they had a delivery mix up and I couldn't find anything to eat that tasted good to me. I ate some Pringles and a fruit salad. A latte coffee is always a good choice because it has lots of protein in the milk, a good carry-on item. Nut and seeds are easy packets to pack If you take some flavoured protein powder its always ready for any emergency when the shops are closed, and you can then add it to milk or plain yogurt. Have a wonderful time
  20. Hey folks, I have 3 different trips coming up and would love your suggestions for food while traveling? I'm about 6 weeks out and have no food restrictions, though I obviously can't eat all that much yet. I'm mostly focused on protein, with some good carbs and fats mixed in where I can. One trip is by car ~ 9 hours each way, 5 days total. This one has me worried about what to eat on the drive days other than stuff like yogurt and protein drinks? I can probably stop and pick up food if needed, but this is through mostly rural areas and options are pretty limited. The other days I'll be in a hotel room with a kitchenette and will have good access to grocery stores and restaurants. I expect I'll be able to eat more normally on those days. The next trip is an overnighter by plane. I may live mostly on protein bars for this one unless anyone has any good suggestions? Unfortunately, no kitchenette this time, so I'm mostly stuck with what I can bring on the plane, what I can find ready-to-eat at grocery or convenience stores, or eating out. The final one is 4 days, again by plane. Different city than trip 2, but should have good access to stores & restaurants. Again, no kitchenette, so no cooking.

    Stomach Flu

Hi, I eat yogurt. Today has been better cramping is minimal and I'm not doubling over in pain. Still have loose stool, but doing better.
  22. I too am frustrated. I started at 229 the day of my surgery (10.11.22) and have only lost 12 lbs. I see people have lost 20 lbs or more. Now I'm worried I won't lose anymore weight and I'm doing all of this for nothing. I am taking in my protein and liquids and don't have a lot of room for actual food. I have a yogurt, and ricotta bake I'm going slow because it took me almost 2 hours to eat one yogurt. I started walking more what else should I be doing? My surgical followup is later this week so I'll see what my surgeon says. Scared but excited.

    Food after sleeve surgery

Oh wow! I don't even eat steak yet and I was cleared to eat whatever I wanted 2 weeks ago! Everyone has already talked about why you shouldn't have it yet, so I won't go in to that. I wanted to tell you that while I LOVED protein shakes before surgery, they were just fine for my pre-op prep. I HATED them after, it wasn't even the taste, my stomach started reacting poorly. Fortunately, I have access to Fairlife milk and Fairlife is easy on your tummy because its lactose free AND it has higher protein per serving than regular milk, its a great protein shake replacement if you are still in a mostly liquids stage and need to get your protein in! I was drinking three 8-10 oz glasses of Fairlife Lowfat milk a day, until just recently because I can now have protein bars and other solid forms of protein. The shakes or the milk are SUPER important to make sure your body gets enough protein until you are cleared for solid foods. When I was in the pureed stage my go-tos were refried beans with a little cheese and taco sauce on them (still eat that now!), cottage cheese, low fat/low sugar greek yogurt, Protein 2 O (its a protein water!), and Fairlife milk. Good job on your progress, take care of your new little tummy!
