Hi Amnunez, Dr. Illan no longer performs surgeries at Oasis of Hope. He now performs all his surgeries at Hospital BC where he is the Medical Director. The Gastric Sleeve package starts at $4900 USD, for a BMI of 48 or lower. There is an additional charge of $500.00 USD for hernia repair. Please contact me if you would like more information. Thank you!

Hi everyone, this is my very first EVER post on ANY forum. I am planning VSG for this June and am in the process of researching options in Mexico. I like what I’m finding on Dr. Illan but I’m confused about which hospital he works out of. Oasis of Hope, Bariatric Pal Team MX, or Hospital BC?? Also, I read that he doesn’t include hernia repair in the package price. I believe other doctors do include it. Anyone know how much that costs in addition to the $5000 vsg package?

Bariatric Pre-made protein meals (add water meals) VS home cooked protein meals
TheAngryMeow replied to Shawna Jones's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second this. I used to buy into the organic, grass fed, all natural, no antibiotic stuff all the time. I came to realize that no matter what you do, you will slip up somewhere. GMOs are in EVERYTHING nowadays. Even organic stuff. So it's best to just eat healthy and not worry about finding the most "pure" ingredients. As far as the OPs original concern, I noticed that too. I can only speak from experience since I'm still on the liquid pre-op diet, that I had to experiment with a ton of different things before I found what worked for me. Currently, I drink Glucerna hunger smart. It keeps me satiated for several hours and sometimes I forget to even eat. Plus, its the most palatable of the protein drinks I've tried so far. It's always a good idea to make stuff from scratch because you know what goes in it and can avoid the extra sugars and fats. But in a pinch, protein drinks and other protein sources are helpful. But I wouldn't rely to heavily on it. Good luck 👍 -

Yes been in hospital every weekend for UTI infection keeps coming back had u one test on Friday and showed clear. I’ve been eating to much at certain points do u think it could be dumping syndrome? But last faint on Friday there had been a two hour gap. I had the opp in turkey so I’m not in touch with the Bariatric team here but have been in and out and had every test. There was a problem after my surgery three days in and I couldn’t keep even a single drop of water down. The done an endoscopy and found I had oedema in my stomach. They drained it but said if it didn’t settle I would need the mini bye pass. Thank god it settled but can’t help feel it’s something to do with that. I do suffer a bit with low blood pressure so could be that. I do fed up I can’t face going to hospital again. thank you for your reply April -
No restriction
BadWolfGirl replied to GotItDoneInHarlem's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm assuming you're still at mush food? I think once you start eating more solid food you'll feel more restriction. That being said, so many people had me so scared about certain foods and so far I can eat almost anything. The ONLY thing I've had a problem with is eating too quickly when I'm not paying attention. It happened again tonight. Taking to a friend as we were playing cards and was eating my crab and a few minutes after finishing, it came right back up. I also don't tolerate creamy soup, I think for the same reason. They go down too fast and then I feel sweaty and hot and nauseous but bc they're liquids there's really nothing left to throw up as it's already went down the tubes so to speak lol. Bottom line, you'll learn you best. Take it slowly! Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -
March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
Slimmy-mommeee replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Lily! The front snap bra and robe with pockets are great ideas. I'm nervous about the IV line though with the robe not sure it would work. You should definitely enjoy each meal bc the preop diet is no joke. Are you able to eat a small meal on your or just liquid? Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk -
Food Before and After Photos
Sheribear68 replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes to all of this! I actually find myself craving the lighter, healthier and VLC food choices more now than ever. I myself don’t make the most perfect choices every day, but I do plan out 4-5 days weekly and even then I don’t get in all my food I’ve planned. I actually find myself eating LESS than planned most days because i still have a “fat brain and eyes”, so what I think I can eat turns out to be more than I can actually eat. The good news about that though is that I’ve got loads of protein, healthy bats and slow-carbs in my diet and those keep me happy and filled up and not at all feeling deprived. Food was definitely synonymous with “love” in my household and that’s a tough one to get over. Lol, knowing fluffy’s family history is cool bc now I know where she got some of those mad cooking skilz from. I was doing good at the age of 25 to make Mac and cheese. 🤣🤣🤣 -
It's so annoying and embarrassing! People are always like "is that your stomach ? Are you hungry ?". And I'm like noooo I fed it already

Wow that's nuts. I use a handful of spinach, around a cup of frozen fruit, about a cup of almond milk and my Genepro. It takes me an hour or two but I drink it while I work so I get side tracked. Maybe bc I'm rny things slide down super easy.? Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -
Omg, this is so relate-able! Lol, anytime I purchase an outfit ahead of time, it doesn’t fit like it should on the day of the event. So hubs and I are in the midst of planning a beach vacay for June and I’m sooooooo tempted to buy shorts and tank tops, but I’m really having to reign myself in bc it’s still 4 months away. Thanks for your post (you still rocked that dress even if it was a bit loose) because I was getting restless and dying to order some clothes and now I’m going to grit my teeth and wait a bit.

Protein shakes and nausea
hmills653 replied to brooksbrittanyanne's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I get nauseous thinking about them any more. When I’m old and frail I’m in trouble bc I don’t think I could stomach another protein shake in my life. Try the protein waters sometimes they sit easier not as heavy -
I would stick with water and protein shakes at this point. Once you start purée, I was week 3 and the easiest for me was like a slice of peach puréed and Taco Bell pintos and cheese. I remember crying bc I could only eat a few spoonfuls and just wanted to finish a whole cup. Head hunger is very real. I also liked hot tea, especially peppermint .

What's the immediate recovery like? (Days 1-4 post op)
hmills653 replied to Stacy1234's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I will never forget day one sitting in the hospital room thinking, what the hell did I just do to myself. When I went home I couldn’t swallow water it hurt too much, I would dip my tongue into the little medicine cup and absorb it I guess 😂. They gave me liquid oxy for home and it helped the pain but you will need to take something to help prevent constipation if you can’t get enough fluids bc that’s miserable in itself. But best advice is set a timer, tell seri or Alexa to to remind you to drink. Walk, walk walk, don’t try to go hiking when you are still barely able to get food in bc you will feel good but if you over do it too quickly you will feel like or possibly pass out. -
I occasionally get those horrible cramps in my legs usually when my electrolytes are low, like potassium or magnesium. I had to do the shots for a month after surgery bc of prior blood clot in my lung, you should’ve seen my belly, it will fade don’t worry.

February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Strange indeed. I am now the skinniest girl at work, my circle of friends, and my family and it’s a bit mind-blowing. Now when I go out in public, nobody knows that I’m actually a fat girl trapped in a skinny girls body. They can’t understand that I know their pain, their shame, their mental battles. It’s kind of like once I got >2 years out of chemo and I didn’t look like a cancer patient anymore. I will always be a cancer patient, but I no longer look the part so people dealing with cancer of their own tell me as a health-care provider “well you can’t understand what I’m going through...”. Um...yes. Yes I most definitely can. It’s the same now, and honestly it’s even weirder for me bc I was MO for most of the last 22 years and it was so much part of my identity that there are aspects I probably won’t live long enough to get over. I’m sensing in your post here, AZhiker that you’re feeling a bit “lost” as to which group you can relate to. Our previous acquaintances can’t relate to us like they did before and new people we meet never knew our previous struggles. I can relate completely to this feeling of “where do I belong now?” And this is why forums like this and support groups are absolutely vital for our continued growth and mental health. Of of y’all in this February group are near and dear to me as we were all starting about the same time and went through this together. I will be forever grateful for the last years worth of humor, frustration, fears, setbacks and triumphs that we’ve shared. As we move into year 2, there will be new challenges and I’m looking forward to navigating those together. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
Sheribear68 replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Okay so I had a moment like this today at the Pilates studio. An instructor I hadn’t had in awhile was back at our location and she made a comment to me after class about how fantastic I looked and how strong I had become. Another gal in class piped up saying she was noticing the same thing about me and then it turned into a discussion on how much I’d lost since joining the studio last March. So I told them all that I’ve lost 120+ pounds since January 2019, and there was a part of me that wanted to add, “but it was bc of WLS, so please don’t look at me with awe and admiration,” Then I mentally took a step back and realized that 1. I didn’t owe anyone an explanation of how each of those pounds came off, and 2. I am amazing and awesome for sticking to my program like I’ve done for the last year. I could’ve “settled” for losing 50,60,70, etc pounds, but at the end of the day I pushed myself beyond anything I ever thought I could’ve. And you know what? I am actually very strong and dedicated to this lifestyle. Yes the compliments sometimes can make us feel guilty and awkward, but I challenge each and every one of you guys to give yourself credit for the incredibly brave and wise decision to have WLS in the first place. This choice isn’t the easy way out. There’s so much involved in it that will be with us forever and we chose forever altering our digestive tracts to get back our health. There are many people out there who will -for a multitude of reasons-never make our very difficult choice. -
Vitamin & iron deficiencies after DS
grannyweezie replied to grannyweezie's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
no I don't think ive been over 80k per day & that was only for a month. Mostly it's about 50k. I usually recheck labs every 3-4mo. Only 3x in 4 yrs has the D touched the lowest of normal range. It's mostly way below normal in teens. The A & E have never been even close to normal no matter what I've tried. Does your low D cause depression & fatigue? I deal with that, as well as the last 3 months, dizziness & nausea but not sure if that's coming from any vitamin deficiency or something completely different. Thankfully my calcium & Bs have stayed normal. -
What's something you wish you had known before losing all the weight?
Sheribear68 replied to BoredFatGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It gets easier, but it’s still rough sometimes. On the upside, hubs and I rarely go out to eat anymore bc of this, therefore it’s great for our budget. On the downside,I’ve had to learn to tell myself repeatedly that IDGAS what the servers or restaurant staff think of me when I I order an appetizer as a meal (honestly it’s so tedious sometimes to explain that I want it brought when everyone’s meal arrives because IT IS MY MEAL) or when hubs and I share an app and I take small bites off of his plate and ask for an extra smaller plate. You would think with more and more bari brothers and sisters out there that this would be so common, but it’s still hard for people to understand. It’s like our society exists to stuff our faces with as much crap as we can when we go out rather than enjoy the experience of going out. -
Setbacks are normal, no one is perfect, if we were, then we would not need the surgery. Recently my current PCP provided a prescription for Contrave to help control my appetite, unfortunately after 2 weeks I feel no difference. I have been on several different weight loss prescriptions over the last couple of years and unfortunately no long term changes either. The only thing that really worked for me was being active in Weight Watchers, going to the weekly meetings and actively participating in the support groups. Although I am going the self-pay route to avoid the insurance company BS my PCP wants me to loose about 20 to 30 pounds before usury. I plan to rejoin Weight Watchers a month or two post opp when I am back to eating somewhat normal.

I am ok with the shaved ice and I do better with cold liquids vs room temp I was told i can have boost glucose control and carnation healthy start which are helping I keep forgetting the tea ... ..and have bouts of hangry because everybody else in the house must be fed. This zero yogurt i have Monday is going to be the best ever lol. Didn't realize how emotional I would be and how fast the weight would be coming off even before surgery i lost 7 lbs from Friday to Monday. I have a heightened sense of smell for food for some reason. I keep getting random painful hiccups and only two of my incisions hurt but the others itch like crazy which I know signifies healing but oddly enough where they injected my blood thinner days ago itches more than anything. But I'm trying to stay positive ..and not bite somebody lol

Liquid diet struggles
ronjsteele1 replied to TheAngryMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I start my pre-surgery diet in just over a week (one day before my 50th birthday). Blossom requires protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and a lean meat for dinner. My biggest fear is how to survive on that few calories for two weeks. First, I don’t sleep if my stomach is growling. Second, my blood sugar is going to tank which makes driving unsafe bc it makes me want to fall asleep at the wheel (I have reactive hypoglycemia). How on earth do people deal with these types of issues on so few calories?! If I could subsist on 600 calories a day I’d have been doing it a long time ago. 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ So I’m more worried about the peripherals then anything. Forging ahead no matter what but a bit concerned about the pre-diet. -
I’m paying out of pocket through Blossom Bariatric and it’s $9499 bc they are estimating they can get our insurance to pay the difference up to their $15k fee. The deal with Blossom is if your insurance doesn’t pay the difference then you only pay the amount they quoted you. If you’re 100% cash it’s $15k.

Yeah that happened to me too! It's bc we have to wait the 30 mins before and after we eat, so if you're eating frequent small portions, that time adds up! The window is just smaller Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk -
Pre Op
Slimmy-mommeee replied to junesbaby2016@gmail.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good luck! I also had to quit smoking for approval. I quit on 1/1/20 and still have cravings when I get stressed. I'm concerned that after the surgery i may struggle bc i can't smoke, stress eat or drink alchohol. So I've made appts to see two therapist and hopefully one of them will be a fit. I need new coping strategies since I can't take the old ones into my new life with me. I hope you get approved quickly. Keep us updated! When are they requesting the preapproval?
