  1. I’m 10 weeks post surgery and still have this problem. For me, it’s eating one bite too many. The foamies happen and it feels better to just to get rid of that bite. I’m still learning what I can and can’t eat. Things I heard were tough to eat, like chicken are not hard for me. I can’t eat any kind of pasta, bread, or cracker. It’s very painful, I sweat profusely when I eat a food my new stomach doesn’t like, and I literally have to lie down until that feeling subsides. I struggle with getting my water and protein in daily. It has gotten easier since I was six weeks post-op, and I feel like it will get better with time. I did learn my trigger when I’m full, my sinuses get stuffy and I sneeze over and over. Just eat slow. My trigger doesn’t happen until about five minutes after my last bite. I always put my food to the side and re-visit it in an hour or two. I’ve lost 35lbs so far! Patience and learning your new tummy is key.
  2. I only have about 80# I want to loose but I've been overweight for over 50 years and have yo-yo'd since 1971. I have enjoyed bicycling but that extra 80# is like riding with a bag of cement. I would also like to ditch my medications. Scheduled for 9/19.
  3. I'm going to try and keep this from being too long, but there's so much to say!!! First I'll start with my newest NSVs. I'm officially in a size 18 clothes (from my original size 30), size 10 shoes (from my original size 11), size 6 1/2 ring (from my original size 10), 18" chain on a necklace (from my original 24" chain), and 2x jacket (from my original 4-5x). I can now comfortably fit on a massage table without fear of it creaking or breaking. I can now ride a bike because I'm within the weight limit. I now am able to hit my favorite thrift stores and walk out with seriously cute clothes that look nice, sit well on me, and actually fit comfortably!! My asthma is almost completely gone (I only have it when I get super sick now instead of all the time). My blood work came back and my hormone levels are almost in the normal range (I have PCOS) and my cysts that completely COVERED both ovaries are totally gone (without having taken any meds or done any hormone therapies!!) I did a 6 mile hike this past weekend with my son. I am completely pain free and am able to go full on beast mode with my workouts again. I can go up 5 flights of stairs before I need to stop and rest. Now for my new chapter in life and old dreams becoming new again. So years ago, I wanted to become a nurse. I completed all of the academics with a 4.0, aced all the labs, but couldn't do any of the clinicals because I couldn't do all the walking, I was 400 pounds, and my health/joints/back were way too bad. So I gave up on it. Then about 2 years later, I thought "well, maybe I can be a medical assistant. Surely THAT'S not as hard" and once again, I couldn't do the externship because I couldn't do the physical stuff. So I went into other areas for work, ballooned up to 421 pounds, worked remotely, and made good money. I loved what i did, but there was always a part of me that regretted not being able to go into the medical field. That was my heart's desire. So fast forward to now. I'm between jobs and miserable. I had to stop working because of all my complications from my first surgery. Now that I've been cleared, I can't get hired anywhere. So I decided that now is a great time to go back to my dream of working in the medical field. So on Sept 5th, I start school to become a certified pediatric oncology medical assistant. Most of my previous credits transfer over, so I only have about 6 months of academics to do and then the externship. Then I sit for my certification exam and then I get to finally FINALLY do what I've always wanted to do. By my 46th birthday next June, I should be right where I want to be, doing what I want to do, and hopefully at my goal weight. I'm sitting here in tears as I type this, because I thought this was something I would never see happen. I resigned myself to being morbidly obese, extremely unhealthy, and needing a cane to get around. I may not be at my goal weight (the weight comes off a lot slower with a revision, and also as your bmi gets smaller and you get closer to your goal) but I believe eventually I'll get there. But the things this surgery is giving to me, the dreams I can live out, the health and wellness and years of my life I'm getting back..... it was all worth it. The complications, the uncertainty, the pain and healing and stalls.... all completely worth it. We all start this journey wanting the numbers on the scale to go down. But there's SO MUCH MORE this surgery gives you. I will never, ever regret my decision. Never.

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

That makes total sense to me. I am 19 days out, and I felt prepared before surgery. However, the restrictions, the effort to get in fluids, the different sensations, the lack of solid food, the changes in the internal plumbing... I could not have prepared for any of that. One must experience these things to really understand them. That's one reason that I am very grateful for this support forum! So many people can understand where you have been and where you are going. There are people here who are 10+ years out, and they are still very willing to share their wisdom and experiences for us newbies. I'm sending you internet hugs and so many well wishes for tomorrow! It is rough at first, but every single day does get a little bit better

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

Hello everyone, I had my surgery, the sleeve, on 8-10. I feel I have done well except for fatigue. Returned to work today. I will be able to move to soft foods on Thursday. I have been on full liquids since my surgery. I never want to see soup ever again!

    Surgery

I'm pretty concerned about saggy skin. I've lost 55 lbs and my arms and breast have become deflated. Not a pretty sight. I have a lot of weight to lose still. I figured I better join a gym once healed and at least I'm older and nobody is trying to date me these days...thankfully. If I stay on course and lose all the weight I intend to I think I'll have to get the skin reduction surgery. I'd rather not but lets face it, at my age nothing goes back. My face has slowly been sliding down for the past 10 years. I often wonder if it ever stops. LOL All kidding aside - at least we'll look great in clothes.
  10. While I'm a bargain shopper, I have a lot of really nice clothes, maybe not top designers, but from places like Macy's, Dillards, Kohls, Belk, Torrid, Venus, etc. Most are current and all are in excellent condition bc I've always taken great care of my clothes, hung everything to dry and such. I also know that to buy them again would be something I could NOT afford. I've realized I will have to do much less volume and be more creative about pairings and figuring out what flatters. I'm fortunate that I'm tall-ish (5'9") so a lot of my dresses and my cardigans can be worn for a long time before they're falling off I think. I wouldn't mind donating things but I'm also practical in my realization that much of this was bought when I was working and now that I'm retired, I don't have the disposable income I once had. I'm 56 so I've got a few years before I'm sitting on the sofa in sweatpants but not sure how to sell what I have and get back a little cash to re-buy some new duds. That idea sounds cool with reusing the fabrics but I don't see it being a viable day-to-day business bc it probably wouldn't be practical and while I can't speak for everyone, most of the things I've bought as my fat self were never sentimental or something I'd want to save, I can't wait to be in a size 8 or 10 and hope to never have to buy another piece of clothing with an X in the size! I want to shop at cute places in the non-plus section for Chico's, Boston Proper and Venus and have someone tell me how thin I am Vain I know but a girl's gotta dream p What part of Tn you in? I'm in Crossville, AL, about 45 min from TN/GA/AL junctions on I-59, just south of Ft. Payne myself. aL

    Snacks

I'm looking on the BariatricPal shopping site now and on Sam's and Amazon. Sweets have never been my thing much so a protein bar seems like a candy bar, which is awesome for some folks. I like savory snacks like Cheetos, Potato Chips and Popcorn, etc. (which is why my fat arse needed surgery to begin with) and was looking at the Protein Chips options and saw a big tub of cheetoh type cheese balls on Sams for around $20 and some things that look like Doritos from various companies. Obviously, I don't want to sit around eating chips and snacks all day bc even the healthy snacks add up pretty quick calorie wise but I'd like to find some snacks as well that are "light" versions but satisfying. I will say MsTeeTee that if you want a simple protein snack, I purchased a 10 pack of boneless, skinless pre-cooked, seasoned diced chicken breasts which was in 3.5 oz individual portion vacuum sealed packs. It was $14.99 which isn't a great bargain but for just one person, convenient. I'm retired but if I were working a regular job I think I'd buy some meats up, marinate/season them and cook them and freeze them up in Rubbermaid small containers. I've already done that with several varieties of beans (red beans, Lima beans, 15 bean soup mix and cream peas) and it makes it an easy lunch or dinner. I'm not sure when(if) we get to eat things like pork, burgers, steak, etc. but things like chicken, pork, steak fajita mix thrown in a small container with a low carb tortilla would make a quick snack. I saw a cute idea at a convenience store where they had taken hamburger meat and shaped it into the shape of a hot dog. I was thinking of doing that and tossing in the air fryer, again, using lc tortilla. If you wanted to make 10 or 20 of the hamburger dogs and toss them in zippy bags for a lunch bag when you leave home, it could make things very convenient later in the day. IF you aren't into cooking Tyson and Springer Mountain both make bags of 8 oz pre-cooked chicken you could buy already made. I'm looking forward to getting to the stage where I can eat something besides soft bc I'm not doing so well on it so far, I'm only tolerating eggs w/sausage gravy, some beans, cream of chicken soup, yogurt. Good luck with finding snacks!

    Pain after surgery?

I’m 9 months sleeve post op and if I remember correctly they sent me home with hydro morphine. I was getting such bad headaches daily and would last 12 hours. Finally read the side affects of the pain meds and headache or migraine is on the list. I stopped taking it right then and went back to Tylenol after maybe day 3. I think being dehydrated also contributed to headaches as getting enough fluids at the beginning is a challenge. I was also give the self injection shot to help prevent blood clots. I think headaches are also a side affect of that drug. I finish led the 10 day course of injections but so glad to be off it. I agree with another member the gas pain is the worst part of it coming out of surgery. It took a few days for it to finally leave my abdomen and was the most painful part. After that managing pain was very tolerable with Tylenol. Just remember it gets easier every day and take it one step at a time!
  16. I am pleased with the sleeve. 10 months out and a loss of 152lbs. I have severe acid reflux prior to surgery and a gi bleed. Was on ppi for at least 7 years. After surgery, no reflux at all and off all meds for it.

I had my surgery on August 17. I didn’t have to do a 10 day liquid pre-surgery diet, thankfully. However, I sure miss food. I’m hungry all the time.

    Pain after surgery?

I am averaging about 80g protein per day and I am as of today 19 weeks post-op. I still have a protein shake most days, but it's in the form of a Proffee. I will either use a Core Power or Nutrition Plan shake as my milk mixed with espresso or have a Chike iced protein coffee packet and mix with part water, part Fairlife skim milk. I also like to add a scoop of collagen. So it's 30g+ of protein to start the day. Midday there is usually some version of eggs and/or cheese somewhere in the 12g of protein range or an Oikos Triple Zero or Oikos Pro yogurt which is 15-20g. Lately I have been adding some blueberries and Catalina Crunch cereal in yogurt for texture which adds another few grams of protein. Dinner is almost always some form of protein and veggie. Grilled chicken, ground turkey/chicken/extra lean ground beef, tuna pouch, chicken burger. I like to make cottage cheese bowls, so maybe some turkey taco meat and mix w cottage cheese and some low fat mexican cheese blend, lettuce, tomatoes and some salsa. I even mix my tuna with cottage cheese and have it with sliced cucumber and tomatoes. The portion of meat can range depending on the way it's cooked and what else I'm mixing in, but I can manage 3.5 ozs or up to 4oz of a protein. I can't seem to manage 5 small meals so it usually lands around 3-4 small meals/snacks. Depending on the day my restriction doesn't leave me wanting to have a lot of solid food. If I'm coming up a little short and don't want to eat more, I will drink some Protein2O protein water. I do also love the Quest Protein Chips - my #1 is now the Spicy Sweet Chili flavor. I keep them around for days I either don't want to eat something heavier or when I'm with friends and they are having the regular chips. They pack 19g protein a bag.
  20. I’m approx 24 post surgery and the pain is intense. I’m in Norway - they don’t seem to believe in opiates or strong pain meds here so I’ve been getting infrequent doses of IV paracetamol and some sort of paracetamol suppository a few hours ago. The IV helped to sleep a bit, but the pain is way more intense than I was expecting. I’ve got a bad headache and feel dehydrated but drinking causes a lot of pain and discomfort. They gave me some sort of strawberry nutrition drink to go through before they discharge (no leak test planned) and it’s really rough. Hard to get down the tiniest sips, causing nausea and hiccuping which is painful on the incisions. I’m feeling awful and really regretful in this moment. My husband is a 3 hour drive away and is making his way here now for discharge and I am dreading the drive back home. I can barely sit up in the bed as it is without 7-8/10 pain.
  21. I am meeting with my surgeon in a week to hopefully talk about a surgery date. The surgeon wanted me to lose 10-15 pound prior to this appointment, and I haven't been able to! I have major anxiety about this and am worried he will choose to not move forward. Has anyone gone through something similar?

    August 2023 Surgery Buddies!

I had mine 8/1/23 and last food I had was 7/31 so 3 weeks today of clears, I asked about protein shakes and they said I could get the Ensure clear protein drink but no shakes! I can’t drink it because it’s so sweet it gags me so I’ve lived on broth and a lot of water and snowcones w/ sf syrup and popsicles. Three days ago I had cooked/frozen several large batches of Lima, Red beans, cream peas and bean soup. I had some of the bean broth bc it had a bit of substance and it seemed to be all that kept me going. I ran out and went back to broth with seasoning but finally started using 1 small can cream of chicken soup to a quart of chicken broth plus 2 cups water and cooked down with a bunch of Cajun spice. I go back to surgeon tomorrow and am supposed to be put on soft puréed food, eggs, mashed potatoes and yogurts per their instructions and I am certain that if I don’t gnaw my arm off by then I will come home and eat the best eggs and potatoes of my life 🤣 I have been starving for the last 10 days and I’m pretty sure my stomach has healed bc it growls and gives hunger pains about 90-120 post broth meals.

    Traveling overseas after VSG

Everyone's recovery is unique but based on averages, most people have regained the majority of their strength and beginning to settle into a new "normal" eating routine at 8 to 10 weeks. Remember to use caution when introducing new foods. Our tummies can often be disagreeable for the first 6 months.

Hey Congrats to you all for your losses. @CarolineLittle thank you for thoughts. Makes me feel hopeful that some day I can post : hey I lost 20# !! This past week I was pretty good, I was able to eat a lil bit of food. Doc cut my TPN intake to half, and added 2 rounds a week of just saline. its still a crazy about of calories, fat, carbs ect in these bags.. So my weight loss is at a standstill , then 2 days ago everything went down hill, I'm not sure what happen internally ,but my stomach decided it had enough, I started to violently throwing up, I had empty stomach so it was just bright yellow bile, after 10 mins of that , i noticed small blood clots ( insert panic here) , I called doc, explained to them my currant condition.. They are going to do another Endo to get a look at what's going on.. so now it just a wait, for appointment.. I sure it will end up to be nothing, and I will just get.. " give your stomach some time" or "the hormonal changes of the stomach should regulate soon" ugg!! anyway I just take it day by day, I still try and eat and drink a little.. the max intake i can get is around 2 ounces at a time. Then I have to wait about 6 hrs before I can think about trying again.. So here to another week.. and good luck to you all on another successful week.
