  1. I see there are one or 2 other aussies on the forum. I am 34 and just got banded on the 27th of may. I used to work in the corporate world but was retrenched in a merger. Since i was making a lot of changes this year anyway i have gone back to uni to do a masters in social work. This kind of work is more my speed anyway. Had my first fill yesterday. So far so good. I seem to be loosing about 1.5 kilos a week but as i am a far too hefty 150 kilos i have a loooong way to go. I have joined this forum because i am not really a face to face support group kind of girl. But it is easier for me to share the mortifying personal details of my life (like just how fat i really am) online. I guess my story is pretty unremarkable. I have spent a lifetime fluctuating from normal to voluptuous to grotesque and tried a lot of insane fad diets. 2 years ago i went for a standard check up and kind of hoped for a wake up call but it turned out i was as fit and strong as an ox (go figure) but the doctor warned me that relative youth will fade and then i will probably be up the creek. Sure enough I got even fatter and over the last year have had horrible trouble sleeping and feel tired all the time. I also found normal walking around the shops made me tired and climbing a normal set of stairs made me puffed out for the first time in my life. As these horrifying changes were beginning to occur i met a woman at a party. She was not overweight. She took me aside and told me that she used to be. But she had surgery (the sleeve thing) and it changed her life. I kind of marvelled at her sheer nerve but afterward told the party hostess and she showed me a picture. This woman had been very big, bigger that i am. So i figured if she could do it then so could I. So i upgraded my private health, saw the doctor and started the countdown. Here i am a year and a bit later newly banded. I hope this works.
  2. While I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, your doctor has a lot to say about whether or not you are approved by your insurance. Your doctor will ask your insurance company if you are covered in the beginning, then you will start based on what they find out. So you have a six-month "medically-managed weight loss" requirement. This means that you must follow what your doctor sets forth for those six months, including any dietician/nutritionist appointments. From what I was told by my surgical team is the doctor will submit a report after the six months and request for an insurance review. The insurance company will review the policy requirements and compare that to the report the doctor sent. If you meet the requirements, you will be covered. Since the six-month "medically-managed weight loss" requirement was not told to you as a specific amount of weight necessary to lose to be approved, you may be good to go with only a few pounds lost. The big thing to get from this is any psychological eating issues taken care of and learn how to portion control and eat healthily. Your doctor will know if you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from losing a bunch of weight, and this will be specified in his report. One thing also to remember here - if your doctor does not think you are doing what you need to be doing to be approved, he will definitely tell you. I recommend asking as many questions as you have to your team and follow what they are saying you need to do. You can do this. It is not impossible or no one would ever go through with it. Many of us have had set-backs, stalls, gains, and frustrating conversations with doctors/insurance companies. It is all part of the process. Nothing you are doing, nor will do is a waste of time - especially if you are doing it for your health. Good luck!
  3. I had my second fill a few weeks ago. I think I have 2.3 cc's in a 10cc band. At first I was hungry all the time but got full quickly. Now I am noticing I am,never hungry and things are getting stuck pretty easily. Which of course I know I need to chew even more. But has anyone ecperienced this and would you say its delayed restriction? Or is something else going on? Thanks for your comments.

    My NUT said...

I jump with glee and throw a party if I lose a solid pound a week! Just saying....
  5. Hello! I am wondering how getting in and out of bed went for you after you got home from the hospital. Was it painful? Would a recliner be more comfortable for the first few weeks? Would it be worth it to look into renting one? What do you think?

    Restriction question

Hi all, I am going through some restriction bumps too! Last week I could barely get soup down and this week, I can eat everything in sight. I don't know if I should get another fill, or ride out this eating wave for a week and see if it mellows out!

    Restriction question

Are you getting enough protein. You will be hungry if you are not eating at least 70-80 grams of protein a day. I feel you are close to restriction because things get stuck and it is hard to eat some things. Maybe in a few weeks you need another fill. I am walking 2 hours a day and have just started doing some strength training and i hope this will help tighten up some areas. Protein is the key. Good luck.

Stomach Swelling! When Does It Go Down?

    Mine took about three weeks:)
  9. it varies for everyone - the more you walk and get the gas out, the faster that aspect of it will go down. The swelling from the trauma of the surgery is an individual thing. Mine took about 2 weeks really. Everyone's different though.

    Pre-op diet started today 1/1/15

I'm on day three and already trying to find recipe ideas for the 250 calories of low GI veggies a day. Anyone have any favourite recipes they would like to share?
  11. I'm new at this fill stuff so I need some help deciding about when to get my 2nd fill. I can get my next fill as early as May 25th. But I have a couple of long weekend vacations coming up back to back shortly after that and don't want to be having trouble. I only had my 1st fill a week ago. Right now I am averaging 1000-1200 cals/day, having no problems at all. I've lost 1# this week, but also started working with a trainer so the scale is probably not an accurate indicator. I do want to be pretty aggressive during these first 6 months but don't want to have problems during my vacations either....especially because they're group vacations with friends, none of which know I am banded. any advice?
  12. I had my surgery 4-24-12. Since then I did the week of clear liquids. Then last Monday I was told to start my protein shakes (3a day). That didnt work too well... Made me very nauseous. So I haven't really been drinking them. In addition my vitamins make me instantly nauseous so I haven't been so good with those. I am currently trying to find other options. My nut said I can hav some egg whites, cooked veggies, applesauce and some cheese. But the main reason I'm writing is because I feel scared and have some anxiety.... Am I ever going to feel "normal" again and not be afraid to eat food and get enough nutrients in I guess I'm looking for someone who is a few months out that went through a stage of doubt and fear after surgery... How long did that last? How do you feel now? Thank you

    Pre-op diet started today 1/1/15

I am a week into my pre op diet and I am surprised how well my head is cooperating. I have been keeping busy and drinking A LOT of tea and water. Stay focused and keep your eye on the prize. I have lost 10 lb and I find my jeans aren't as tight (and I can breathe easier ). Just keep positive. This is only the beginning and I am sure there will be a few more hiccups along the way.
  14. I'm 6 weeks post op. I was told never drink while eating. Is this forever? I just had my first 3 slices of sharp cheese. Now I was a drink. I don't want to wait 45 mins to an hour
  15. Hey guys..I know I know.. I posted on here about a week ago that I didn't think I needed a fill but this week no weight loss! Even with working out 5 times a week. I did have some slip ups this week such as sushi ( california roll) half of an avocado burger from Chili's and an egg, cheese, turkey meat on wheat toast even though I couldn't finish it all. This is the first time since surgery I was able to get these foods in. I feel like such a loser and am wondering is this an indicator I should get my first fill on my next visit which is Thursday. I will be 5 weeks post op by then.
  16. Nah, that sounds totally normal. You don't WANT to have problems to know it's working! Goofball! It's 3 weeks til your fill... just hold out. Are you going to Miss. for it, or getting it there? Besides, I'd want my port as healed as possible before I have some creep 'palpitating' it. How's it feeling, can YOU push on it comfortably? How many time have you heard us saying that the first 6 weeks are about healing, not losing? DON'T worry about it! You'll start losing soon. You wanna heal now. You don't have to have a fill to start losing, it happens sometimes too. You're still not going to be able to eat as much, fill-less, as you could have prior to banding. I couldn't at least. It was way more than now, but less than before, so.... I lost before my first fill. Not much though. Just get healed! (I'm just bein' tough on you cause I know you can take it )

Yup, had it. It showed up about a week or so after surgery. Yuck is right. Never had it before, don't want it again.

    Vitamins

I hated the chewables they made me want to throw up. I switched to regular vitamins after about two weeks. I take a men's multi-vitamin in Target's house brand 3x a day and vitamin b-12 one x a day, and Citrical petites Calcium Citrate 3x a day. I also just started taking fish oil for my cholesterol once a day, it is still a little high. All of my labs have come back normal, besides the cholesterol. I would call my doctor and see what he would suggest. Good luck.

    Restriction question

I just got my 2nd fill and boy do I feel the restriction, had my first bought with "sliming" a lot the other day, never will eat too fast or too much again. It's disgusting and painful. I feel a slight full and tight feeling then now I know to STOP EATING IMMEDIATELY, before I get the pain and slime. This is the first real restriction I have felt sice the first few weeks after banding. I have another appointment December 11th....to check and see how it's going. Would love another fill before Christmas.

    Introduction

Thank you for your suggestion. I have had a port-a-cath placement in the past for access since I have had a lifetime of renal lithiasis (kidney stones) and many surgeries. I drink a lot always. The port was removed because they were unable to keep it working, in fact, it really only worked for one procedure. The last time I had surgery (just a few weeks ago) the anesthesiologist was using the doppler and I am not joking here, it took him over an hour to get in (with the jugular the final outcome after lots of sticks). Of course, it was done with no sedation so was probably more traumatic than it needed to be but I am used to the sticks and they don't bother me much except I am not crazy about jugular and the length of the tubing they put in there was impressive I have to say. I do hope I can lose as much weight this time and keep it off for good. I also believe that the kidney stones were less frequent when I was thinner. The problem is I am now unable to take my stone inhibitor (potassium citrate) because my potassium level is too high. I do have palpitations and two leaking valves (aortic and tri-cuspid), though they are mild leaks. I pray this is the right thing for me and do worry. I also could kick myself because of all the weight I did lose and gained back. I know what I have to do to get there and wish I hadn't let that all go. Anyway, there is no sense crying over spilled milk so onward we go. Thanks again for taking the time to respond.

    Weight Loss

From a similar thread... 1. The first 6 weeks are for healing. You cannot expect to lose weight for the next 6 weeks, and if you do count yourself lucky. Stay off the scale. 2. The scale isn't your only measure of success. Take your body measurements. Are you feeling better about yourself? Those all count as well.

No bm since surg last thurday

Try a gentle stool softener. I use Senokot. S. It has worked quite well for me....Taking Iron pills can either make you bound up or be a laxative for you. most find it a bounder upper...lol. The first few weeks you are taking in less bulk and so your still thinking you need to go like you used to but you don't. But if you have that bloated feeling take this.
  23. I had my 2 week post op visit today. My scars are healing very nicely and my 2 week post op liquid diet was cut so this afternoon I started soft food. I am very happy with my progress so far.

    Acid Reflux Nightmares

I have been having some pretty bad acid reflux, which I did not suffer from to this extent prior to surgery. I have already gone for 2 unfills. (1 cc in total). I am at 4 in an 11 cc band and was up to 6 at one point. When I go to bed, even when I don't eat/drink for 3 hours before bed, I fall asleep only to be awoken by vomit/reflex coming up into my throat and a coughing fit ensues. I then vomit and am able to go back to sleep. (Which is propped up on 3 pillows.) During the day, I sometimes feel like a dragon. I feel heat or a sour stomach. I just want to know if this is happening to anyone else and how restricted they are. The trouble is that I can eat, so I don't think my band is over filled, but who knows. Is this just trial and error? I had my surgery in March and so in a couple of weeks, it will be 6 months. Any ideas/feedback would be great. (Should I be worried about esophageal cancer? Or am I just being paranoid.)
  25. I am post-op surgery October 12, 2012. I just had my second fluid remevol within 2 weeks today. I am not able to hold any fluid or food down. My doctor says I may possibly have a slippage and have to get a swallow test. I was also told possible surgery and have it put back into place. Does anyone know how the slippage is possible? I forgot to ask my doctor about this and what are my options. I also need to know how soon after the removal of fluid can I eat solid food. So far I have not eaten and I am afraid if I try I will vomit. Please help!
