  1. What phase of food are you in, 10 weeks post-op, seems like you can have soft foods but not regular foods yet. My guess is that you didn't get enough protein in your day and eating cheese sauce and fries for dinner was the straw that broke the camel's back. Also, it could be that you aren't hydrated enough either. Those two things not hydrated enough and/or not eating enough protein can kick your body's butt! Find out your daily protein goal from your doctor or dietitian and also get at least 64 ozs of clear liquids daily (this can include protein shakes and milk, too). You have been losing weight really fast, 65 lbs post-op in 10 weeks? I know men lose faster, but that is pretty insane! My instincts are telling me that you haven't been getting enough nutrition for awhile now, protein is so super important! Also, remember we had bariatric surgery to improve our health and having some fries and cheese sauce can just tempt you to eat other less healthy, low protein stuff. Good work on your loss so far, but you gotta be alive to enjoy it! Pump up that protein and water!

    I cheated - now what?

    I'm not sure where you are weeks past surgery, but it sounds like maybe you've graduated past pureed foods and into the next phase where you can eat what my doctor calls "mashed foods". It sounds like you aren't in a phase where you can have something as solid & dry as a cracker. Please take care of yourself so you don't hurt your esophagus and tummy! That being said, sh*t happens and all we can do is admit we messed up and then move on and make better choices! You can do this, I can tell you want to do this, butternut squash for lunch and dinner, GO GIRL! Also, the fact that you had mashed potato and a ravioli means you added some carbs to your diet and your brain went WHOA! CARBS! LOVE THOSE! When, that happens, its harder to resist a craving for MORE carbs. Stick with things that are high protein and low carb and you'll feel so much better and have less cravings!
  3. Hey guys I'm 10 weeks post op gastric sleeve. I have times where i stand up and get really dizzy and last night was at a friends house and ended up getting really dizzy, then lost my eyesight and ended up fainting in his kitchen. and luckily he caught me before i hit my head. Im wondering if anybody else experienced this. Not gonna lie i kinda ate a little shitty for dinner and had some fries and cheese sauce from chick fil a. So im curious whether or not what I experienced was dumping syndrome. When i woke back up i was a little shaky in the legs for a half hour and just drank a lot of Water and ended up feeling fine within like 45 minutes. Was a scary experience honestly. Also i started out before surgery at 328 and im down 65 pounds already. Which seems like a lot of weight to lose in 10 weeks
  4. I drank chicken bone broth as a protein source when I was still on clear liquids, but if you can also have protein shakes you must be allowed "full liquids". My "meals" weren't my main source of protein at all, they were just to start getting my body used to 3 meals per day...the whole goal those first few weeks its staying hydrated because dehydration can get you off track for healing. My "full liquids" meals were 3 TBS of creamy tomato soup, 3 TBS of greek yogurt, or 3 TBS of cream of wheat. The rest of the day I was sipping water or Fairlife milk. As for homemade shakes, it matters what you put in them, if I had to guess those homemade shakes may have stuff in there (other than the protein powder/water/milk) that your stomach may not tolerate yet like raw veggies (spinach leaves), raw fruit (strawberries, bananas), etc. You can have protein shakes made with water, milk, protein powder and/or greek yogurt, but in your first couple weeks, there really isn't any other options. Check your recipes with your dietitian or doctor.

    Missed period

    Yep! I was 6 weeks before I figured out I was pregnant. We just had our first ultrasound today. I didn’t think it was possible to be honest but here I am, nauseated. I must say though, I did have late and irregular periods (no pcos) continue for 3-4 months post op before I finally had a regular cycle. It actually synchronized with my coworker and I knew that was a good sign. That was my last one…

    Stalls??

    They haven't really advised me about calorie amounts, and I have my first post surgery appointment in two weeks. I gained weight today, after 680 calories yesterday. Now my stall has lasted for ten days. How long was your longest stall?

    No cooking!!!

    I'm not single, but my husband & I now eat different foods, so for me, its like cooking for one. I keep some "convenience" go-to foods at home: canned chicken, refried beans, canned tuna, tuna pouches, canned green beans. I also take advantage of some of the things my husband cooks and eat my tiny serving of it like his marinara meat sauce for pasta (made from a jar, not homemade), and taco meat when he makes tacos. Then I take my size portion and mix in things like ricotta cheese, or top off with finely shredded cheese. I do the same with the convenience foods. So technically, I'm not cooking with those convenience foods....canned chicken and refried beans are definitely my two main go-to foods though. I'm in stage 3, which is soft foods, if you are still in the liquid stages I'd go for protein shakes, Fairlife milk, chicken broth, etc.....can't really get stuff like that at a restaurant. I have been to ONE restaurant so far, last week, (week 7 after surgery). I ordered an ahi tuna appetizer plate with everything except the wonton crisps. So I had 6 or 7 little pieces of ahi tuna with the spicy mayo and soy sauce drizzled over them, oh and a few little pieces of avocado, it was heavenly. I also ate a few pieces of roasted cauliflower from another table-shared appetizer and one piece of shrimp from a shared appetizer. It was parmesan crusted shrimp but I peeled off most of the crust. I think a good way to manage eating out is to share food with someone or expect to have leftovers. If I share with my husband he knows he gets like 90% of what's on the plate, so he doesn't care. Also, go to nice restaurants like what Arabesque was saying - they use better ingredients and more care in their cooking, PLUS they usually will cater to special requests (like no wonton crisps with my ahi tuna appetizer). When I asked the waitress about different food options I saw on the menu she literally told me "If you see it on the menu, we can make it any way you want", which is the bonus of the nicer restaurants.

    Same here! Am actually smack dab in the middle of those right now, and I just eat until satisfied as always. It just happens to be more than during the other three weeks, I’d say it’s a 25% increase. Hasn’t affected my weight loss goals in the slightest thank goodness!

    I'm 8 weeks post-op and I ate 4 water crackers with hummus on them, it filled me right up. (some people call them table water crackers).

    2 Months Post Op Food

    If you like tacos another idea is to make some taco meat, I use ground turkey and Ortega seasoning and/or warm up some refried beans. I do taco meat and/or beans in a serving that I know I can eat, (1/4 c right now, I'm also 8 weeks post op)...then I put some shredded Mexican blend cheese on top and some mild taco sauce (don't want to shock the new tummy with spicy stuff yet). I dump the refried beans into a storage container and pop it in the fridge so I can keep using it until its gone, same as with the taco meat. Then for the next few days I have taco meat or refried beans, or BOTH to add some cheese to, warm up in the microwave and then top with taco sauce! My foods are super repetitive, too...but that's okay, cause I like them Looking forward to next week when I am on "easy to chew" foods! Going to wrap lunch meat in a lettuce leaf instead of eating it straight! Like a sandwich!

    No cooking!!!

    I am not sure how easy it will be in the early stages. Takeout from a restaurant certainly, but dining out would be more difficult just because of how long it takes to eat and needing to measure things plus your actual restrictions of what you can eat. Plus if you do find something that doesn’t agree with you it’s better to be at home. Once you get used to what your portions should and are able to tolorate most things though you should be able to eat out without too much issue. I’m not sure you would want to eat out most meals though just because there are so few truly healthy options. Many people who don’t love to cook will cook a few meals one day a week or so and freeze portions though. Perhaps that’s something to consider. That would definitely be a healthier alternative to how most restaurants typically prepare their food. Or like arabesque suggested a home delivery service cuts out most of the prep work. Maybe that’s something you want to consider some days.

    Surgery the end of this month!

    This will be my 15th or 16th actual surgery, including open heart surgery in 2020. I'm always nervous about them and I think that's healthy. It's perfectly normal to wonder if you'll get the results you are hoping for, to be concerned about how much pain you'll have and how your life might change, and to be concerned about potential complications. The way I have always coped is to learn as much as I can about the surgery in question. Regarding my bariatric surgery, I know my specific risk factors and how to minimize those risks. I have detailed plans for every step of the recovery process, including how I'll eat, and how I'll deal with pain or complications. I know that stalls are a normal part of the process and that scales lie. I know that what really matters is how I feel. I know exactly why I want the surgery and how my life will improve as I lose weight. I have very specific goals related to % body fat loss and rewards planned as I progress. I short, I have done everything I can to mentally and physically prepare myself for this surgery. This preparation reassures me that this is the right choice and makes be feel in control, which goes a long way toward alleviating the fear.

    August surgery buddies!

    Good morning from scorching hot San Diego! 360.0 now! That's exactly 25 pounds from when I started the liver-shrinking diet 2 weeks pre-op. All seems to be going well, but I didn't quite hit my protein goal yesterday with 3 outings adding up to 6 hours of errands (note to self: grab a protein shake on the way out the door). Still learning. However, that was the only day, so I'm quite proud of hitting my protein and water goals every other day. My activity is really good as well, says my Apple Watch. It's largely thanks to all the work packing/culling/donating for the move as well as errands. Later this morning, the surgeon will call me for a follow-up. The nutritionist was supposed to call yesterday at 9:30 a.m., but she was a no-show with still no word, so I'll reach out to her by e-mail. I got an awesome shipment from BariatricPal store yesterday. They're going to come in really handy on my 5- to 6-day road trip. I don't know how I'll refreeze the ice pack though, but I can probably at least get it really cold in a motel bucket full of ice.

    September surgery buddies!!

    Today is only day 3 of my liquid diet but so far it's going well. These protein drinks are actually keeping me full and I'm not really hungry. I've now tried 6 different flavors of premier protein shakes and my favorite by far is the chocolate peanut butter one. I can't taste the protein and its like having a treat. This week I drink 2 shakes a day so I have one shake for breakfast and then I save my second one for an after dinner desert. I have broth for lunch but so far that has not been very enjoyable. I've tried 3 different broths and they are ok, but I don't like salt and they all seem salty to me and its a struggle to even drink one cup of it. I have a few more flavors to try so hopefully at least one of them will be ok. What I have tried is Millie's sipping broth the taco soup and Thai lemon grass flavors. Both have tons of flavor to them so no complaints there. The lemon grass was the better one but I still struggled with both and I think its because of the salt. Then I tried making and straining a can of vegetable beef soup and I added extra water to thin it out in hopes of less salt and that was ok, but still hard. So I guess I need to buy and try some low salt varieties or go through the effort to make my own. I also found out that I love the flavors of the cheap walmart jello cups (Winky Sugar Free Gelatin) but my favorite the black cherry flavor really upsets my stomach which makes me sad. Any suggestions for a low salt broth would be appreciated

    Surgery the end of this month!

    I don’t think any of us can say we didn’t have any fear pre op. In fact I would probably wonder why if you didn’t. I have been through three surgeries before this one and I still had some nerves a few days pre surgery. There is no shame in rescheduling if you are not ready. I have seen a few people on here who backed out and had the surgery a while down the road when they were truly ready. If it’s just the typical pre surgery jitters though, talk them out here. Write down WHY you are having this surgery and what your goals are. Also check out the “weirdest non scale victories” thread.

    Blood pressure

    I saw my PCP yesterday...Apparently this is common within 6 months post bypass. My body is trying to adjust as it is loosing weight so rapidly. It should pass on it's own but if it starts happening too much there are meds to help regulate it. I see my surgeon in a few weeks for my 6 month follow up and plan on confirming all of this with him also. In the meantime, increase my sodium levels. I am drinking so much water, and with such a low sodium intake my body is flushing the fluids. He even said maybe swap 1 water a day for a gatorade. I didn't even realize my sodium was so low because I never paid attention to that number but when I went back through my tracking APP I am under 800 mg most days, my worst day in the last month was 1100 mg. (those are salted peanut days, haha)

    Beware The Coffee Creamer Pipeline

    So I did try protein shake in my coffee when I was fresh off the OR table. Well, more like 2 weeks after. But yeah, it tasted so horrible. But I see now that I shouldn't use only a few table spoons of protein shake as if it was traditional creamer. I need to treat it like a latte. Mostly shake with the rest coffee. No wonders lol.

    Collagen and Biotin

    I took collagen powder & silica for about 5 or so months for the supposed benefits but didn’t see any difference. My hair didn’t grow faster than it’s usual cycle & wasn’t any thicker, my skin was much the same & my nails were the same too. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It does take time though to see any effects as it’ll only boost new growth but I should have seen some effects even for a time after I stopped. Then I started slathering on a collagen serum my beauty therapist recommended. Cost a fortune & 10 months later still no noticeable change. Gave it up & began using a vitamin C serum & within two weeks I was getting compliments about my clear & glowing skin & was being asked what I was doing from like everyone: friends, family, my former dysport lady & even my doctor. Actually had to order the vitamin C serum for my 82 year old mother she was so impressed - 😁. Maybe it works. Maybe genetics plays a role. Maybe your diet & how your body absorbs & uses nutrients contributes. Maybe hormones affects how successful it will be. Always worth giving it a go. PS - When I recently starting going to a cosmetic physician for my dysport I heard this crunchy sound as she injected my forehead (never heard it before). I asked what it was because it was weird. She said it was collagen & she loved hearing the sound. Still freaked me out.
  20. Best to have a chat with your dietician to work out portion sizes, caloric goals, nutritional needs that are right for you. We all have different needs. 6ozs is actually more than a recommended portion size for any adult. 4ozs is the recommended portion - I can barely eat that three years out. Certainly no where near that 2 months. As to whether you can eat steak or not is more of an issue of is it allowed on your plan or if you are able to. Many find steak hard to tolerate at first. I was eating steak pretty early on but then I only eat good quality tender cuts, cooked to medium rare & cut into very small bites. Remember, all because you can doesn’t mean you should.

    Ugly, boring, and weak

    I’m having it on my face next week again by the cosmetic physician (supposed to be yesterday but doctor had to take unexpected leave). She’s using dermapen which is supposedly more advanced & a deeper treatment than the roller used in micro needling. Having it for my open pores & the acne scaring (had cystic acne).   22. You could tried the Vital Peptides. It has 20 grams in protein, it’s unflavored. I only mix with room temp water and I add a propel mix to it. Or just mix it with propel water, or something. Talk to your nutritionist. My surgery is 10-4-22, but after surgery I am all liquids for first 2 weeks. So I am not sure what your drs is saying or wanting. My nutritionist advised me that All fluids (shakes etc) go towards my liquid intake.

    Did my weekly shopping- this time for the entire family. Came to $89US (not pictured is 2 12oz s of Gatorade zero and the 2 hidden boxes of cereal behind the first 2) after rebates. I practice buy ahead method for groceries. Also, the meal plan for the week along with tonight’s dinner (I ate it all.)

    Eating with bypass vs lapband

    To me, RNY feels completely natural compared to the lap band. Maybe it's because for me, Lap Band was more like a torture device than anything else. When I eat my portion, I feel completely satisfied, in a natural way, unlike Lap Band. I have to admit tho, I seem to have had an easier recovery than a lot do. No nausea, vomiting or intolerance of any foods that I've tried so far. I'm seven weeks post op Band to RNY.
  25. Thank you! Surgeon said it went beautifully. He said I must have followed his directions to the letter because the liver was perfect. I don’t understand why some have a two week liquid diet and others a two day diet. Anyway… The first ten hours or so of the gas pain was awful there was no way to turn for relief. It was in my shoulders and neck and truly unbearable. Then I started the walking and it very quickly started working its way out. I ended up staying in hospital until yesterday. The nausea has been brutal. It would come in huge waves. I was able to get up and walk fine and the pain was next to nothing except when you twist or use core muscles to try to sit up. That one large incision can cause a great deal of pain. It’s like a tearing feeling if you aren’t careful. I am doing fine with hydrating with water. Not so well with broth and protein. But…better today than yesterday. The nausea is much better today. I have slept a lot. I got up and showered on my own and overall feel much better. None of this is pleasant. There are some moments that you think will never end, but it’s doable and I am not sorry.
