  1. I don't make it a habit of pawing through my own emesis, btw, I just was surprised to find solids in the bag after 3+ weeks of nothing solid.
  2. Just as an update it has been about 6 weeks now since my surgery and a little over a month since I started feeling the sharp pains but I just wanted to report that it does get better. What I did was I purchaed a gaus from a drugstore and wrapped that around my waist where the port is to help with the pain and to keep it from moving and kept that on for over a month and now finally I no longer have the sharp pinches or pain anymore. I still have if I move around a lot a little achyness from time to time but its not bad. As a precaution I am going to keep my gaus on for another month just to make sure and my doctor thinks thats a good idea as well. Also I just got back from seeing my doctor and he said he can see nothing wrong that it doesnt even move so it could just be inflamation that can take months to heal with some people. So I just wanted to let u know that it does get better.

Could my first fill be enough?

My doc only flouroscopes if he is having difficulty or there is an emergency for that very reason. I have to agree with him. I've had two and he hit it right on both times. He also only gives fills if you stop losing and are eating to much. If you continue to lose 1 -2 pounds a week on one fill....then that's all you get. It would be a waste of time and money to do one you don't need. If the band is working, why "fix" it? It's not unheard of, but it's rare.

    need some support..

I really don't know if i will get my second fill. thought every month according to my book they gave me i should get a fill but my doctor said last month if i feel full then he wouldn't feel me so i don't know what to tell him this month cause i have been out of whack since last month , it like thru me for a loop. but i am suppose to go back to the doctor on the 28 th and don't know if he will do a fillor not i will need to gadge it closer and see what happens in the next 2 weeks and see if i need a fill. ucdep99
  5. I weigh every two weeks. But that's only because I am still 12# over the highest my PCP's scale goes! But even when I am able to weigh on a regular scale I do believe in only weighing once a week. I think you get too discouraged when you weigh every day-and some here even weigh more often than that.

    5 weeks post op

I'm almost 6 years post op and still remember the first bite of mashed potato when I progressed to "mushies". So feeling some restriction when you've started solids doesn't surprise me at all. It's a learning curve to say the least, chewing correctly. Not sure of your preop and postop "diets", but for me it had been quite a while since I'd had anything to "eat". You may find that whatever solids you are eating now, may cause no sensation in a week or so. Your surgeon may have left some saline in your band during surgery.... its not that uncommon. Just make sure you chew, chew, chew. Best wishes!
  7. Hi! I was just given my surg. date in 4 weeks. As part of the pre-op I had to have an endoscopy. I did not have any symptoms, this was done as part of the prelims for surg. I just received a call from my doc and was told that I have Barrett's esophogus and that I should not have the sleeve but opt for the bypass instead. Has anyone heard of this or dealt with a similar problem. I am reading alot about those of you that have the haital hernia, but haven't seen anything about Barrett's. Thanks for helping out!

    In the research process

Thanks Jamie, Susan and all: I feel very glad that I finally made a GOOD choice for myself, after making so many bad ones, especially concerning food. I went on the pre-op diet for almost 3 weeks, and, probably as a reflection of how much I was eating before, lost 21 lbs. Since the surgery on July 5th, I've neither lost nor gained. I sometimes fantasize about food ( hamburgers, steaks, guacomole) , but I'm not hungry. Mostly, I'm feeling nervous about getting back to eating again.I think I'm afraid I'll gain back the weight I've lost as soon as I start eating.
  9. If you're pushing yourself really hard at the gym, you're obviously going to need a few more calories to nourish the body. As long as you are eating healthy and within your ranges, you'll do great! Follow your NUTs advice. Currently on my full liquid diet, my NUT said any ranges my surgeon gave me I should be at the higher end (due to my structure), so for this phase it was listed 600-800 for me, so I'm trying to hit close to 800 calories a day. I found that hitting the gym everyday this week with 30 minutes of intense cardio actually slowed down my weight loss this week as I think I was pushing my body into starvation mode and i was getting those hunger pangs more in the evening this week then what I'm used too. As an example, I consumed 735 calories on Thursday, burned 630 from exercise in addition to what the body normally burns for the day and sets me up in a huge deficit. I'm going to reduce the intensity of the cardio for now until my calorie intake is back up to 1000-1200 and I think then I'll be okay. Everyone is different, so please don't use my numbers for yourself, as I'm just trying to explain whats been happening with me as it might shed some light on your own dilemma

    Plateau all ready?

If you are pbing a lot, you may have some swelling, which will cause you to continue to pb. It is a viscious cycle. It would be good for you to go on liquids for a couple of days. Perhaps do the 5 day pouch test. The first few days are liquids, then it moves to mushies. It helps you test your pouch and get you back into the program. It should also allow any swelling you have to subside. If you give your band time for swelling to go down and you start pbing again, you should probably check into getting a small unfill. If you are journaling, what kinds of foods are you eating. When I became too tight after my hysterectomy, I turned to slider foods, which stalled my weight loss. It wasn't ice cream and candy. I was eating Cereal (Special K), but it still stalled my weight loss. Do a little investigating and see what you can find out. Journaling will also help you figure out exactly how many calories you are consuming each day. I consume 1200-1500 per day and have been since surgery over a year ago.

    Plateau all ready?

Keep your head up. You're going to plateau here and there. It pretty much happens to everyone. I was banded at the end of March and just now got over a 6 WEEK plateau. It was the most frustrating thing ever. But the weight is starting to come back off now. Get your Water in and try to avoid foods that you're getting stuck on. Throwing up frequently is not normal, nor is it good for you. It also makes you revert back to slider foods, which go down easily but also tend to be not-so-great for you. You're doing just fine with your weight loss. If you get down about it, nothing is going to come off. A positive attitude goes miles with this.

    Plateau all ready?

Hi, I was banded 6/30/09 and have lost 28lbs so far. I had 3 fills. After my 3rd fill 3 weeks ago I lost 4lbs the following week and then the next week I lost nothing, I thought it was PMS, I weighed in this week and I am up 2lbs. I don't think it still is PMS. I don't think I need more of a fill since I am not eating much and I throw up quite a bit. Could it be a plateau all ready? Any suggestions or advice from anyone? I haven't been drinking much water, its so hard to fit in, but I am trying. I do exercise most days of the week. Thank you. Getting discouraged. I thought I would have lost more by now.

    WHAT? I gained weight!

hi fatblasting, My surgeon told me to eat no less than 900 calories, because anything less than that and your body eventually goes into starvation mode. I can attest that that's a real thing, because I was at 900 calories, and stopped losing weight for about a week and a half. My nutritionist told me I was starving myself, and increased my caloric intake to 1,000 calories. I get about 950 calories per day, all from good, healthy organic food, and the weight loss has kicked back into a normal range (normal for me, maybe not normal for anyone else). So, I'm not a doctor, and I didn't stay in a Holiday Express last night. But ... check with your nutritionist. You may simply have reached a metabolic plateau and need to increase your calories. It worked for me
  14. Nothing wrong with a round about, so they aren't shocked. Even if it's something vague like in December or January I'll be out for a week. It makes absolutely no difference to them and their ability to plan around you, but they'll feel better and be less outraged when you have an actual date.
  15. hi, my name is debby and i was banded on may 24th '04. since then as you all have experienced i have had ups and downs. It has been almost 6 weeks and i can really eat now, which is not good! I have not had a fill yet and can not wait!!! I need to know that my eating is normal @ this point and that it will get easier when i get my fill??? I mean i can eat whatever, granted it is smaller portions than i was used to but still bigger than what i have heard people can eat! Also my weight loss has slowed down. I lost @ 25lbs. the first 4 weeks including the liquids they have you on 5 days prior, and now it seems to be tapering since i have been gradually on regular food. Thanks deb.
  16. I am a year out and still don't have good restriction. Well when I get a fill I usually have good restriction for about a week and a half. I still have been losing weight, but it's because I am eating right and exercising. Don't wait on a good restriction like I did. Even with the band you still have to do the work.
  17. How long after surgery did it take you to get to good restriction and start really losing weight?? how many fills to get to that point? I am in bandster hell and can only get fills every 6 weeks and have had one fill and no restriction...I am scheduled for my 2nd fill Oct. 19th and havnt lost any weight in a month...want to know how it worked for others so I can calm my nerves about it:cursing:
  18. Hang in there...we CAN do it. I am feeling like a total failure at the moment..but telling myself I didn't go through all this to not have it work...and I know that the biggest part of this working is ME with the help of my band. I need the right positive mental attitude coz I really don't want to fail at weight loss...yet again. I have not seen the good weight loss some of you have at 3 weeks out like me..but I am trying to stay positive and let this be a life changing experience. Some days its easier than others. You can message me anytime...I think you are doing awesome.
  19. No fruits, really? Strange! I was having this weeks ago (I'm 7 weeks post-op). It really baffles me how different the requirements are across surgeons. I haven't had any raw vegetables yet, except spinach and leafy ones. I think mine requires cooking them all until 8-9 weeks out. But I'd suggest taking tiny bites, and chewing it up real well before swallowing. Then wait a minute or two, and try again. Ease into it.
  20. two weeks out and melba toast/crackers??? that sounds pretty advanced to me. My advice- don't drink! Get up walk around, take a hot shower (that always helps me). It will either go down or come up- but you will be miserable in the meantime. When it does, stick with liquids for 48 hours as your stoma is probably pretty swollen. If it does not resolve in a couple of hours you may need to contact your surgeon- or whatever they have you do at 1 in the morning. though I do not wish to contradict what your surgeon says, being more conservative could not hurt. My surgery center's protocol was liquids for 2 weeks, mushies 2 weeks, then regular foods as tolerated. And crackers were not on our mushies list. I will be online for a little while longer if you want to PM or ask anything else. Let us know how it goes!! Good luck.

    slow loser

You've lost 35 pounds at 7 weeks post-op? Or was some of that pre-op. That is at least average and actually above average. Keep the faith--if you stay at 5 lbs a week or even 2 or 3, it will go more quickly than you think...probably faster than it took you to put it on. Congratulations...that is great progress!
  22. I was in the same exact situation. On the borderline of the BMI so that Cigna would pay surgey, was also required to do a three month supervised diet. During the three months supervised diet I actually gained ten pounds due to having foot surgery and being laid up for over a month and then trying to compensate by not having enough calories. Cigna required me to do an additional three months basically saying that if I couldn't stick to a doctor's diet for three months then I wasn't serious enough about losing weight to have surgery. During those extra three months I lost the ten pounds and an additional seven pounds putting me right at a BMI of 50. I would think that your surgeons office has seen plenty of these scenarios and can guide you on the right path. Personally, I would take the supervised diet seriously and try to lose a few pounds so the insurance company can see how important this is to you but also be careful to not go gung ho. Good luck and I'm hoping all goes well.
  23. I think you should wait until Monday to see if your doctor gives you the go ahead. Can you have broth or Soups or something to change it up? Is that on your liquid diet? I'm not going to tell anyone to go against their surgeons orders. So if you're looking for justification, you aren't getting it from me. Sorry. A lot of us did liquids for 2, 3, 4 weeks or more. I think you need to just suck it up for a few more days.

    Whats your sweet spot?????

Hi there, I wish you all the best with your new band. I am also at 5.5 cc's in a 10 cc band and I have some restriction but not all the time. For example, in the mornings I can eat usually which is weird cause most people are tight in the morning then after that I can hardly eat. But today, it was the opposte. The band is tempermental. Anyway, I feel like if I just had maybe another cc it would do me good. Unfortunately, my doctor only gives fills every 8 weeks. I've had 3 fills to get me to 5.5 and my second one was given early because I called and asked to come in early. I was also gaining weight in the beginning and it was getting very frustrating. Hopefully, you will reach your "sweet spot" after your next fill. Regards, Alfie

    Should I Fill? Input please!

I am having the same problem, at times food feels like it is stuck and then other times I can eat quite a bit with no problems at all. I am scheduled for a fill on Friday, August 29th and I don't know if I should have one. I am almost 2 months out since surgery (June 27th) and I have lost 35 pounds, but only 5 in the last 3 weeks. I hope someone will have an answer for us!!!
