    September surgery buddies!!

Well, i had weakened moment, and paid for it , so Thursday 1 week onto my pre op diet of 2 protein shakes and a meal with at least 3 oz of protien, i was so hungry my job had subs and wraps, and of course i had a turkey wheat wrap, that was not a good idea i was serverly constipated, and excuse my language, was in labor 2 hrs, and finally had a 4lb poop baby that was the worst feeling in the world. I was so weak after and disoriented, tuesday was my final visit before my surgery on the 15th, i weighed 234.7 after the birth i went down to 230.3. But im now worried because ive been reading about what happens if you cheat will on your pre op diet, uuugh does anyone have advice or been through a weak moment. Ive talked to a couple of people who have had the bypass and said they did the pre op diet 3 days before surgery and was fine. But on a positive side i haven't cheated since and my hunger cravings have gone e away. But im still 😟 concerned

How much walking did you do?

I think the walking after surgery requirements (clot prevention) is only temporary for a couple of weeks. I was just told to not sit still for hours, 1 minute every 15 just seems weird and how are you suppose to relax and recover doing that. getting up getting a drink going to toilet and normal stuff you do around the house maybe a small walk every couple of hours ( around your house) would be enough. but dont stress about it.

Not eating, drinking or walking enough…

I had surgery 9 months ago and didnt hit my goals until at least 6 months along. I had so much nausea and vomiting that taking the extra vitamins and calcium was tough. So I rarely did. I never ever got enough water or protein. Then on the 6th month I saw the right person and got the help I needed. Two doses of the right PPi a day. My husband was so worried for me. Since then I have gained strength and can do loads more. My body tells me when its time to rest and sometimes take a day off. I rarely get more than 60 gms of protein a day and if I had not found protein yogurts that I could stomach, I would still struggle. My calorie count is about 650 to 1000 a day. I am lucky that I have no hunger. I dont count my liquid intake but its probably less than it should be but I am ok with that. Its not a biggy with my team either. I am not dehydrated I can walk anywhere I want to now as before I would need a walking stick to go the shortest distance and be puffing like an old train. I may have had a slow start but it has not affected my weight loss, other than having more stalls when I have not been able to eat enough. Every persons journey is different. Its hard not to compare yourself to others but it does no good in the long run. I didnt exercise until month 6 and I knew I didnt have enough strength to do more than keep my home clean and go shopping. Now most days I have too much energy This surgery makes your hormones go stratospheric. Even at my age I knew my hormones where out of whack. My poor hubby couldn't understand why I was so short with him. I was just like when I had PMT again. My team were never bothered about my progress, just helpful I hope you get through your period quickly and get the right amount of ppi for the nausea. You will then gallop along

    September surgery buddies!!

One day at time …glad to hear your feel a little better. if I may recommend what my doctor recommended drinking 2oz. Of protein shake ever hour on the hour and then every 15 minutes within the hour drink 2 oz of acceptable liquid, for3 weeks.

    August surgery buddies!

Hi! I had bypass on 8/17 and finally getting the hang of this! I was in ER one week after surgery for impacted bowel. Then had major pain in my incision site a few days later. This week I had my meds too quickly and proceeded to throw up 13 times! It’s been crazy. I’m still not in a good routine yet. Does anyone have a good schedule that is working for them?

    Stalls??

God, I hope so. I have actually googled: "Is it possible to lose only 20 pounds total after gastric sleeve", and I've read some of the stories from people with gastric sleeve "fails", but they're still mostly people who in the end regained what they lost. From what I've read, I do know that this stall has to do with water balance in the body, but it's still hard not to feel like a failure. People are starting to notice that I'm thinner - my cleaning lady came in the other day after more than a month, and the first thing she said when she came in the door was: "You are slim!". My stomach is a lot smaller and I see a difference in my face and neck. But it's still very frustrating to see a same or similar number on the scale every day. Especially since I'm hovering just over the 100 kilo mark and never dipping under it. I haven't been under 100 kilos in more than a decade, and I would so very much want to be.

    August surgery buddies!

4 weeks after sleeve surgery, had COVID 10 days into recovery which sent my body into a tailspin and landed me in hospital, thankfully no lasting damage and am starting to feel that boost in energy that people talk about. Progress wise, 2 stone exactly down since surgery, (28 lbs, 12kg) and now just onto soft food. Had smoked salmon, a teeny bit of avocado and an egg this morning, for example. I haven't worn this t shirt since 2018, had it at the back of my wardrobe in the vain hope it may fit one day. Truly never thought it would. Now I face the reality that I probably will have to send it to the charity shop (goodwill) in a few weeks, so I'm gonna enjoy wearing it for now.

So many updates, so little time...

Well, I'm on day 14 of my stall, and it's weird that I'm not stressing. I think I expect it to last a good 3 to 3 1/2 weeks since each stall lasts about a week longer than the previous one. My scope is next week, and I'll be glad to finally get it done. I seem to be doing ok with 40mg of Nexium twice a day, although I have to really watch what I eat still, and I have to take the GI cocktail when I start having bad problems again. I took it for a week before every meal. Now I take it as needed. The shedding from my hair is getting pretty heavy now. It's not worrying me because I knew it was coming, but it's really getting on my nerves!!! My hair is literally getting EVERYWHERE!!! I have to clean it a few times a day. If I run my fingers through my hair, I shed. If I brush my hair, I shed. If I wash my hair, I shed. When I get up in the morning, the movement on my pillow through the night caused me to MAJORLY shed. It's really aggravating. I'll be glad when it slows down. Now that I'm almost 4 1/2 months out from surgery, I noticed I'm able to eat larger portions of food. That's tripped me up a few times, so I have to be extra mindful of that. I really wish I had lost my hunger, and I really wish I had restriction. I didn't get any of the useful benefits or "extras" that most get with the surgery. BUT, I'm still working out and doing what I'm supposed to. I just wish it wasn't such an uphill battle everyday. I definitely wish I had gone with the bypass. But I didn't, so I'm going to do everything I can to make this work.

    Eating/Bite Timer

I splurged on this utensil set in the BariatricPal Store that alerts you if you eat too fast. I'm less than a week out since starting stage 3 (and with that, chewing), so I wanted to get some good habits in place. I'm happy to hear that Baritastic has a timer. I have the app and track there but haven't poked around enough apparently.

Stalled at only 2 weeks post-op

Yep. I've heard it's common. Almost exactly at the 2-week mark recently for me I was the same weight for 4-5 days, but I knew it was just a matter of time before I'd see it come off again so wasn't worried. Now I'm back to losing daily.

    Gastric Bypass as an Outpatient

Hi - I stayed overnight night and was released the following afternoon. A friend of mine had RNY a few weeks ago and was released the same day. I believe her surgery was early in the morning, and she was released late afternoon/early evening. My overnight bag included the following: phone, charger, air pods, lip balm, face towelettes, feminine wipes, and deodorant for after surgery. Hope this helps and wishing you well!
  13. I’m trying, I really am… but in the last 24 days I have had my period or pre-period symptoms (major cramping - nausea - fatigue) for 12 days and I have no idea how long this round will last. It started the day before my surgery & lasted 7 days and this week it came raging back. Between the surgery recovery, the pms and the heavy cycle I’ve been drained. I’ve been as active as I can, staying close to the house. I’m trying to drink as much as I can… I get close, but don’t always hit the goal and I never exceed it. Most food turns my stomach… so I’m doing my best but the last few days (when my period has been super heavy) I’m lucky to get 1/2 my Protein in. I’m worried about my follow up next week… being scolded for not doing better or more. My teams super nice so I don’t know why I’m stressing - but I am. I can see my clothes getting baggy, changed in my body and the scale is showing some loss. But I feel like my results should be better if I were walking more, drinking more and hitting my protein goals. Can anyone tell me if they fell short of their goals the first month and still did ok in the long run? How long did it take to get the hang of this? I’m not giving in to cravings… no junk. (Considering the raging pms - that’s a big win alone). I am trying to stay positive but with my hormones in overdrive I guess I’m just looking for some reassurance. Thanks in advance.

    Birth control and gastric bypass

I was just having this conversation with my sister the other day. I find it really interesting when it comes to ideas about bariatric surgery and birth control. I had the Paragard IUD when I had my RNY in September 2013. I started experiencing horrible hormonal acne three years later, and was prescribed Yaz. I had my IUD removed because the bleeding was terrible. I had never had heavy periods prior to the Paragard and when it was removed, the heavy bleeding stopped. Yaz has kept my skin blemish free for 6 years. Even as a RNY patient, it has been completely effective against pregnancy. So, for some women, there may be an increased risk of malabsorption of the BCP, but that has not been my experience. My GYN knows my surgical history and told me years ago it’s totally fine for me and my husband to continue using as our primary method of BC.

    July 2022 peeps!

Thanks - I didn't get to the store yesterday but I will this afternoon. The two "O" words are hard to tell apart and un-pronouncable (is that even a word?). The surgeon had given me a 30-day prescription for the esomeprazole (Nexium), and I told him at the 5 weeks post-op I didn't think it was bad enough to get another prescription. I probably should have taken him up on it. But, I would get something over the counter if it continued. I think I will try the Prilosec over the Nexium. I think I read that it might not last as long, but it might also work faster.

    September surgery buddies!!

Hey there. mine is sept 20 too. My doctor only gave me a 1 week pre op and he said to have a broth based soup and an egg. I started it two weeks out anyway because I wanted to get my body used to the diet since it’s similar post opp. It is definitely a struggle but it gets better. I have less headaches now than I did Monday, and I find myself less irritable. Wednesday was really bad I was so so hangry. I would encourage you to check with your doc or nutritionist to see if anything else can be added like a Greek yogurt or jello. Or even the soup broth. good luck. We’ve got this!
  17. Hello everyone I am new on here. I have my surgery September 20th. I’m not so much nervous anymore after reading some of the positive posts on here. I’m really struggling with the 2 weeks post opp and having to mainly drink only protein shakes majority of the week. Can anyone give me some advice please the day’s that I only can drink protein shakes I still be hungry. What else can I try any advice please?

3 years post VSG to RNY

Hi! I had a revision of my sleeve (VSG) to RNY on 8/29/22 for a hiatal hernia repair and severe acid reflux. Since then I feel like I’m doing okay and no longer have any acid reflux symptoms. My only concern is every time I drink something cold to room temperature my stomach hurts really bad. I can sip on warm bone broth and that doesn’t seem to bother me much. I know I’m just out of surgery and healing but should I still be feeling pain in my stomach almost two weeks out? Any insight as to why this is happening would be greatly appreciated! 😊

Stalled at only 2 weeks post-op

I hit my 3 week stall at 2 1/2 weeks. It's normal. It'll break and you'll lose weight again. Just stick to your plan and watch for the non scale victories. Those are a huge help.

    August surgery buddies!

I'm 4 days late, and feel miserable!! Besides I'm bloated, my feet are swelling. I've been in the famous 3rd week stall, for 10 days. I decided not weight myself until monday, that is my follow up appointment with my surgeon...counting the days for soft food.

    August surgery buddies!

I've always been a slow loser and the scale is my nemesis. I'm considering just monthly weigh-ins, so I can look at it like your cousin. It does keep adding up over time, we're all impatient! And I've said before, we read these forums at there's some statistical outlier who loses a bazillion lbs in 3 weeks and we hope maybe this time it will be us!

    August surgery buddies!

Thanks. I just started feeling like I turned the corner this week. I've also been stalled. A few days ago I called my younger cousin who had the sleeve 3 years ago and talked to her for a while. She let me vent and then told me that she felt like the weight loss was so slow and she was constantly worried she wasn't losing enough. Then one day she woke up and was 100 pounds down. She said not to stress and that the weight loss will happen. Everybody heals differently. I hope your stronger, more energetic self is right around the corner too!

    August surgery buddies!

That's great. Congrats! I'm 30 days past surgery and still feel kind of weak. I get winded from walking and I fall asleep most afternoons after work. I am getting closer to my protein goals, although my weight has stalled now for almost two weeks. I'm not sure I'm glad I had this surgery.

Stalled at only 2 weeks post-op

Yup - I lost the first week … then scales didn’t move week two. Then they moved a tiny bit (I’m 3 weeks and two days post op now) and today my period decided to show up - so I’ve had a bit of a gain. I’m wildly stressed for my first in person follow up next week - because I’m worried I won’t have made enough progress - but I’m sticking to my plan and doing my best to stay on track. It is what it is. As long as I follow my plan I know my weight will come off. My labs are showing improvement over my pre op numbers and my clothes are definitely getting loose. So I’m trying to focus on the signs that I’m headed in the right direction and not fixate on just the scales. Hang it there - your body is still recovering from the surgery … as you move forward you will see the progress.

Is this it? Is my body done?

Great ! For the last 4 weeks I was stuck at 171-170. This week, the scale started moving again, I am 167. I know I must not complain but it is disappointing. I went to a GYM for the summer since it is too hot to walk outside here, but I cancelled it now that the mornings and late evenings are getting cooler, I am walking the same amount of time but instead of going to the GYM I am walking by the park at 6 AM in the morning before I start working, maybe the stall was going to break anyway, maybe it was the change on the walking hours but this week I have lost 3 pound so far.🤷‍♂️
