  1. I am still in the beginning phase. My consultation is on Feb 24 but I have done lots of researching. More so on the gastric bypass and some sleeve research. I suffer from gastritis and have been scoped many times. My ENT tells me that in my case gastric bypass will be better for me because I currently suffer from gastritis and heartburn . I also run low in Iron but my primary doctor says it wasnt alarming enough for her to say when I do have surgery that I had to choose the sleeve or that the sleeve was the best choice. I also have a problem with maintaining my electrolytes. With the bypass I would have be on top of this along with the common deficiencies that may occur. So, far two of my doctors believe I will stay on top of it. Its very important to get your blood monitored. I have been on you tube viewing videos of people who decided on doing the bypass instead of the sleeve because they already were dealing with gastritis. I have viewed videos of those who have gastritis before the sleeve and had no problems after the surgery and or mediciation helped it so much that it wasnt a problem . So it seems like a wait and see. I read that some doctors have done revision on some sleeve patients when the gastritis got too bad that medication didnt help and it was so bad they could not eat so it had to be revised. It just depends. You may not have a problem and that could be the case. No one can predict if gastritis will be a big or small problem after a sleeve. I would just continue to do more research to prepare yourself and be informed of all of the possibilities. I am still researching on the bypass and when I come across information on the sleeve I read that too. I want the bypass but I still keep research open to what the sleeve offers too. So every surgery has its pro and cons. Either way get all the information you can get so you can feel confident in your choice. The research continues for me.
  2. Hello Everyone, So my surgery date is March 25th, starting to feel some anxiety towards the whole thing! I'm a revision from lap band to RNY had the band 7 months it has slipped I've lost nothing on it followed the diet been getting sick having acid relux and feeling terrible. So I'm happy to get the band out I'm just so nervous I'm doing the pre op diet once again having a really hard time with it this time the first time not to bad but this time I'm having the 2 Protein drinks a day then eating the one small meal at night I'm starving all the time. And all I'm thinking about is food.. I hate this. I'm also reading all over these forums and getting myself all worked up that it's not going to work for me that I am going to fail yet another procedure (yes I feel I am the one who failed not the band). I'm afraid that I'm not informed enough that some how I will end up failing this procedure I'm trying to wrap my head around everything it's all just so overwhelming. I've done my research didn't have to go through the 6 month thing because of my band but I'm kind of freaking out a bit. I think I really feel like I'm failing on the pre op diet so I will fail on the post op it;'s so hard my band in unfilled and I'm so hungry but then I still get sick sometimes depending on what I eat! Any words of wisdom PLEASE
  3. A quick background - I had a lapband slip diagnosed in June. EGD confirmation in July. Band removed in September. And last week my insurance denied my revision to a sleeve. I have a background in the insurance industry so I'm not completely at a loss, but... My surgeon had a wonderful lady who knew the revision process inside and out, who quit just a few weeks ago. Their new lady is, well... new... and I'm her first revision case. Uh oh. So I'm kind of having to be my own advocate, because she just doesn't know. The reasons for my denial were: Failure to submit proof of a mechanical failure Failure to document proof of adherence to the prescribed diet and exercise requirements. The revision is covered, otherwise. I don't have to worry about exclusions. But I need to figure out how to prove those two points. Mechanical failure - my insurance company (Cigna) does include a slip in their definition of mechanical failure, and both my x-ray and EGD report were provided. Does anyone have any other ideas how we can document or prove mechanical failure other than those two things? I'm not sure what else I can give them, unless I have the surgeon himself write a letter confirming it. First, lap-band doesn't have a prescribed diet. It's a restrictive procedure. I'm not sure I can prove compliance with a prescribed diet when there really isn't one. I have no way to document portion enforcement. The best I can think of is to gather medical records from doctor's visits (other than my surgeon's office), that demonstrate a steady loss or maintenance until when I had my daughter (I gained in my last trimester, then lost all but about 10, then gained about 20 - right around the time I started showing symptoms of what ended up being a slip). But even with a slipped band/lack of major restriction, I maintained for about 2 years. My surgeon's office wasn't sure these records would do the trick. I know I have OB records that will weigh me in at least 150 lbs down from when I first had the lapband put in. Anyone experienced denial on these same two provisions? Would you mind sharing what types of information & documentation you provided? Thanks all... I'm an instant gratification kind of girl, and this blows.
  4. I've had the band for five years - revising next month. Very similar experience. I lost about 20 lbs in the first 6 months then another 30 over another 2 - 3 year period. It took quite a bit of fill/unfill to get somewhat decent restriction but I never had great restriction. I found I had to really have more self control than anything else - which annoyed me as I thought that band would help more with that! The biggest things that helped me avoid being stuck were taking TINY bites. Chewing more than you ever think you need to, and taking more time between bites. I also had horrible time with chicken and scrambled eggs were always a no-go. I could eat an omelet though and would make 1 egg omelets. Dark meat chicken would be better, but white meat was just too dry.

How can you tell if the band slips

Hi again Lizalee, What do you mean "kinked tube'" and "port revision?" How does that happen and what procedures are involved in fixing these problems?

    Revision

I had my gastric sleeve done 2/13 and did really well, especially taking into consideration I have multiple sclerosis. A couple months into it my reflux had returned & I had a terrible time trying to swallow. Since my acid levels in my stomach were way too high the revision was recommended. I had the revision 6/15. The revision surg triggered the worst MS flare up I've had to deal with since my diagnosis. I struggle with eating do to excessive nausea and vomiting. It is better with the transdermal patch scopolamine. When I would eat, it would feel like I had a razor splicing my insides to shreds. Morphine I take for my back & the MS did not touch the pain in my abdomen. I ended up with an "internal hernia". Emergency surgery for "volvulus obstruction". twisted intestines. In less than 6 mths I've gone from a sz 14 to a sz 4. I will say.......finally.....I am feeling & doing much better. Now.... from everything I have found & read, the internal hernias are rare. This is not normal at all.

    Revision

I'm having the revision from sleeve to bypass because of severe GERDS and my weight loss wasn't significant at all i lost about 40lbs.... I go to see my new surgeon on Feb. 1st and I'll find out details then.
  8. Congratulations I agree 100% with you. I was banded for 6 years and almost 2 months before my revision on 12/31/2015. I feel so much better in just a week. And that's through the pain of healing.

    Lapband removal

Hey marly18, I'm having my gastric bypass March 26 and will also be saying goodbye to my band of 16 years. My procedure will all be done at the same time. May I ask why you are having to remove your band and then doing the RNY at a later date? When I first entertained the idea of having my revision I kind of figured it might be done at two separate times, but after my consultation with my surgeon he said he would do it all at one time. He is also repairing a hernia too.

    loving this

I have the same question as enjoythetime? But, don't take this personally, what you did is not recommended by any means. Some of us have very little swelling right after surgery. This means the stoma/band is wide open and the swelling in the stoma area doesn't interfere with food passing to the lower stomach. I too was one who had no swelling. But, we enter Bandster Hell so much sooner and some can't handle the hunger and break the rules. Most patients experience a lot of swelling and eating solid food so soon after surgery could compromise the integrity of the sutures and the position of the band. This could result in a quick return to the ER or hospital for a band revision. So, if you're a newbie, do not disregard the no solids rules till the Doctor clears you. You may not be as lucky as Enuf?

Eroded lapband to sleeve surgery anyone?

Ok then, well I'm glad to know you found out about your erosion! Those are so dangerous and so good of Dr. A to stop the process and let you heal first. I don't know of anyone who had erosion and revised to sleeve or I would lead you there - sorry. Good luck in your research! I hope some will reply.

    help I'm new to this

Welcome Sa'.., Well, I am also new to this whole thing. I initially went into my surgeons office back in February '13, determine to get the lap band. I felt like I did my research and I knew what I wanted. Lets just say that after 20 minutes with him, I changed my mind. Not only are doctors not recommending the sleeve, the percentages of people with a band getting a revision are insane. So I can totally understand what you are going through. At this point, I already did all of my pre op requirements. My surgeon's office submitted my paperwork yesterday, and all I am waiting right now is for the insurance's decision and for me to lose 5lbs (my surgeon wanted to me to lose 5% of my body weight, and I am 5lbs shy from the goal). I have BCBS MA, and as of a year ago, the sleeve wasn't even approved. Anyways, welcome to the journey. This is a great website with tons of information!!! Good luck!! ~A
  13. Thank you Sharpie for your response. I am going in on Wednesday. I am a bit nervous but this is my last resort to fix my stoma. I already had it surgically repaired in 2013 and it did not work so this will my 2nd revision. It is nice to hear you and your friends have done well with the band. band to sleeve (bcbs horizon?)

I had band to sleeve revision on 10/26/16. I could not be happier with my decision! It is true that because of the restriction of the band, you may not lose as fast. But you will definitely be able to tell the difference. Just remember, everyone's journey is different and what happens for them may not be the same for you. Follow the rules, eat right, exercise, keep your head up and keep your eyes on the prize. Best of luck

    Newbie Here

@@tonname, it is great that you are starting out by doing research. It is very important for you and your doctor to discuss what approach you will need based on your personal health issues. All 3 weight loss surgeries have different pros and cons and the best one needs to be chosen to help you so you don't have to revise down the road. I would only want to do this one time. I chose bypass in the end because I had reflux/Gerd. Some surgeries can make this situation much worse, bypass is supposed to cure it. Thank goodness it did for me. I should warn you about that sugar thing, some people do not have adverse reactions to sugar even after bypass. I am one of them. I can eat anything I want without getting sick with the exception of eggs. That means that the habits you build and stick to are critical. At first you won't want sugar at all but you will likely try it down the road. You have to be strong enough to refrain from too much of it. For me, if I eat too many carbs in a day, my weight loss stalls so there is incentive to stay away. I have learned the more I exercise, the more weight I lose in this surgery. Good luck on your journey! It is very exciting to go through this because you feel so much better after. I have psoriatic arthritis, my spine and knees hurt me so bad. Today I was actually jogging on my treadmill! No pain anymore in my knees at all!
  16. I would be inclined to go with the DS, as it's the more straightforward revision (at least to a DS surgeon, where it is basically completing the DS) and it offers the best shot at countering the metabolic damage that you have suffered. With the RNY, the caloric malabsorption dissipates after a couple of years, so it may help you get the weight back off in the short run, but in the longer run you will be back where you are now, trying to get by on 1100 calories. Another thing to consider is that with the VSG, the revision to the DS is straightforward, and something that most any qualified DS surgeon can handle. However, if the RNY doesn't work out and you ultimately need to revise that to the DS, that's something for which only a handful of surgeons in the US are really qualified (maybe a half dozen.) That assumes that the RNY doesn't permanently screw up the sleeved stomach in making the pouch - I know quite a few who have had the RNY/DS revision (and even a couple who started with a band, revised to RNY, revised to DS) but don't know any who have gone the VSG/RNY/DS route yet.
  17. Sorry you are having all of this trouble. Do you have a bulge that protrudes still ? I took a calcium chew without food today and it was awful !! I kept dry heaving and had to go lay down. I truly dislike this revision and new way ugh. Prayers for you.
  18. Jachut, what a great job, I wonder if I might get to the situation you are in. I originally set my goal to be a BMI of 24, which is the top end of healthy according to my Doc. I started at the same 35 as you. I since revised that to what I remember as my last weight where I felt good. Once I get there, I'll keep trying to get to 24, but 21, Wow.
  19. Hi there. Congrats on your upcoming surgery. I'm scheduled to have a revision 4/11 and share some of the same concerns. It's totally normal to be emotional and sorta freaking out. Dehydration is a concern but I'm sure your surgeon has and will provide post op instructions on ways to avoid it. Some of us will breeze right through while others will struggle and experience dehydration. Pain varies also person to person. What I will say to you is no matter the struggles or hurdles we have to over come in the beginning they all pass. Hang in there and try to find comfort in the wonderful way your life is about to change in the long run. Always know in the back of your mind if it gets bad it will eventually get better. Hang in there and wishing you the very best on your WLS journey.

    Question about the Sleeve

This is a long thread but it includes good information about the sleeve from a member who had revision surgery from the band to the sleeve. http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f17/wasabubblebutt-recovery-65353/
  21. hi all, looking for some advice. i had the band in 2008 and was revised to the sleeve in 2010. my lowest weight has been 145 lbs but i usually stayed between 145 and 149. i went on a cruise in september and even came home losing a lb, but since then my weight has crept up and today it was 152. i know its not a ton but dont want it to get out of control. what did everyone do when in this situation

    Revision Procedure By Dr. Aceves

Ohhh you will ALL love your sleeves!! I had my revision on Sept 15 2010 and so far I'm down 80 Lbs since then. Nearly 90 from my pre op diet and working on 140 Lbs total. Best thing I've ever done for myself!!! For ME the sleeve has been a far better surgery. I'm rarely hungry (VERY RARELY), the weight comes off much faster, the restriction is superb and no more of the monthly surgeon visits... can't beat that at all. All the best to all of you getting sleeved or revised! Keep us updated.
